Hyper Love II

Babylon X - "Hyper Love II" (7:55)
Asphalt DJ & Gzardin - "Sweaty Ride" (7:13)
Olsvanger - "Blue On Blue" (5:56)
MYKI & Matris - "Longest Night" (6:14)
Tantra Motion - "To U" (6:29)
Review: Tel-Aviv-based label Tofistock helped shape out their sound with the first volume of Hyper Love in 2021, and now they return with another round of fun and feisty club tracks which speak to the Israeli love affair with psy-trance while offering a modern context for the sound. Babylon X takes a richly melodic approach which fuses big synth pads and sweet 303 lines with a smart, pulsing drop for a proper gear shift when you want to lock a crowd in even deeper. Asphalt DJ & Gzardin have a whale of a time with the punchy, pumping pressure of 'Sweaty Ride' while MYKI & Matris keep it turned up to the peak time with a catchy, vocal-speckled workout. For our ears though you need to make sure you check Tantra Motion's dreamy 'To U', which tips over towards heady machine soul for the subtler corners of a set.

14vac
Sleeper
Duality
Divergence
Beat 992
Review: K209 are slowly making their way out of the shadows and in doing so more of their personality is revealed. Prior to this release you'd never hear hyped vocals say something like 'over here', but that's exactly what happens over the grungy bassline and drums that is "Sleeper". "14vac" sounds like a broken down service lift trying to regenerate itself, but it's the sound of "Duality" that will be most familiar with followers Henning Baer and Milton Bradley. This record, though, is all about the B-side thanks to the ripping gurgle of "Divergence" and "Beat 992" which sounds like an old school Do Not Resist The Beat 12" mixed with Milton Bradley Prologue. Big techno.

Kris Baha - "Something Something" (6:27)
Disrute - "Kabu" (4:39)
Nick Murray & Kris Baha - "House Fire" (5:27)
Mike Callander - "Gentle Brute" (7:02)
Review: Opening their doors every Saturday for mind-altering shock treatment, Power Station has been giving their raging punters a potent dose of megawatt reality. Their curatorial expertise has established an institution that will now extend the mythical energy generated with a record label in the form of annual limited 12"/digital compilations, grouping tracks that have already become the club's signature tunes. Resident, booker and co-founder Kris Baha finds himself on both sides of the inaugural disc, with the ball of confusion solo production 'Something Something, and again as Heavy Concern in collaboration with Otologic's Nick Murray, a name synonymous with the Melbourne club circuit being one quarter of the Animals Dancing massive. Young gun Disrute captures the optimum warm up set with the shape shifting slow burner 'Ka-Bu' while scene veteran and Haul Music boss Mike Callander discovers a new lab mutation of sci-fi soundtrack, damaged funk and cerebral house.

Bando - "Pivot To Fakie"
Bando - "Waitting For"
Mooz - "Gorgorito Guarda Tu Dinero" (Christian Varela mix)
Mooz - "Gorgorito Guarda Tu Dinero" (original mix)
Review: After a year break, La Influencia is back!! Mike Input EP (LI 004) was a hit and had a great support from many international DJs; with further proof, the record is licensed for 10 mix CDs and compilations around the world. To name a few, Francois Kevorkian included it in his mix CD "Frequencies" and in his 3x12" vinyl, DJ Lucca put it in his DVD "Hardhouse", it was taken for the compilation "South American Techno" in Chile and Argentina and for "Cherrymoon" compiled by News in Belgium. LI 005 is a four tracker EP. On A side Bando delivers fresh sound, 128 bpm electro tech track with a retro sound never seen before on the label. A2 is energy for the dance floor, it is the traditional Bando's groovy sound. On B side: Mooz, this artist known for releasing records in labels like Pornographic, Speaker Attack, Soul Access and has planned new releases for Black Codes and Donkey Head soon. His track (B2) is pumping and groovy techno. On B1 he is remixed by Mr Cristian Varela, well known for more than 100 releases and albums in labels like Intec or Primate, for owning Pornographic Recordings among others, and for his DJ gigs in Europe, America and Asia. The remix has a melodic synth lead and powerful break characteristic of Varela's tunes.

Teller (7:02)
Duration (8:12)
Review: Speicher 125 is the upcoming split EP by German producers and DJs Barnt and Michael Mayer, forming part of the Speicher series, one of Kompakt's many V/A serials. This is music for peaktime dancefloor servicing; 'Teller' and 'Duration' are minimal, intense hooverers, reminiscent of later DJ Koze tracks and/or film soundtrack techno. The B, too, comes in true Barnt style, throwing organic bells and knocks into a beguiling mix.

Review: Techno cognoscenti Mark Broom and Gary Beck team up for some serious jams on Beard Man. Sprawled across the A Side is a Broom remix of Beck's "Luxar", a driving bomb that will please fans of Frozen Border and Sandwell District immensely. Broom's own "Redial" appears on the flip, which brings a more bouncey swagger to proceedings, with a shuffling groove riding deep beneath some rather nice sonar bleeps. Top release.

Brizman - "As We Should" (feat Linn Stern) (8:46)
Hidden Sequence - "Dub Cycle" (7:52)
Martin Jarl - "02:37 AM" (6:00)
Review: 'OHM Series #11' presents a vibrant mix of techno with contributions from four talented producers, adding depth to the ongoing series. On Side-1, Christine Benz's 'Sunset' opens with warm, enveloping chords, creating a serene atmosphere that feels like a sunset on a tropical island. Following that, Brizman's 'As We Should', featuring Linn, shifts the tone with a lighter, dub-infused house sound, perfect for a more relaxed vibe. Side-2 kicks off with Hidden Sequence's 'Dub Cycle', a darker, more ominous track, weaving catchy dub techno rhythms that pull you in. Finally, Martin Jarl's '02_37 AM' brings a smooth, ambient dub feel with a traditional techno edge. This airy composition evokes the timeless sounds and reminds us of Model 500's Starlight. This edition of OHM Series showcases diverse approaches to dub techno, balancing the atmospheric with the rhythmic - and all delivered with precision.

Review: Holland's fearless Tape series returns with a hefty dose of electroid groove science from some of its most talented members. As per usual, the beats are murky and the melodies swamped, ingeniously blending shards of techno together with bursts of electro. The killers have to be Mark Du Mosch's "Soulsearch", a blistering clusterbomb of a track reminiscent of Gesloten Cirkel at his finest, and "1999" by Interstellar Funk. Don't miss this one; it'll go for bucks in the future. Hand-stamped.

Kaiserdisco - "Get On The Dancefloor" (6:51)
Review: The big room techno don that is Adam Beyer is back with more potent techno weaponry on his own Drumcode label, this time with part two of the 12th volume of his A-Sides series. His 'Take Me There' is first up in remix form and Carl Cox flips it into a surging peak time roller. Matt Guy's 'Give Me What I Want' is an emotive banger with big synth energy and reverberating vocals while ADHS's '2STEP' hits hard with its flaming drums and trance-y synths. Kaiserdisco then brings dark, stomping warehouse energy to their raved-ready 'Get On The Dancefloor.'

Review: Coeur De Glace on DKO Records (DKO 34) delivers four fantastic electro tracks, each with unique influences and directions. Side-1 kicks off with Binary Digit's 'U Want Dis,' an exuberant, high-energy track that pays homage to old-school rave with its lively vocal samples. Fasme's 'Morning' follows, blending smooth electro with soft keys and a whimsical AFX melody for a perfect combination. Side-2 features GGGG's 'La Cueillette,' a feel-good, fun and melodic electro tune. Bloody Mary - "Snatch" (4:29)
Millimetric - "Body Alert" (4:15)
Meshes - "Roleplay" (3:43)
Delectro - "Panic Rage" (6:52)
Review: After celebrating a decade of Dame last year via a handful of themed anniversary releases, Bloody Mary has decided to begin a new chapter in the label's history by launching a new series of multi-artist EPs. The Paradigm Shift aims to blur the boundaries between EBM, dark-wave and acid, with Bloody Mary setting the tone on this series-launching EP via the clattering machine drums, undulating EBM bass and dystopian vocal samples of 'Snatch'. Millimetric ratchets things up a notch on the throbbing EBM/acid house fusion of 'Body Alert', before Meshes doffs a cap to Nitzer Ebb on the surprisingly funky - if still militantly tough - 'Roleplay'. For those seeking armour-plated heaviness, the EBM/techno fusion of Delectro's nightmarish 'Panic Rage' should hit the spot.

Morphosis - "Too Far"
Signal - "Wismut"
FBK - "Nanomal"
Review: Shaggy haired Berghain don Marcel Dettmann will release a mix CD, entitled Conducted, via Music Man Records, and to whet appetites the Belgian imprint have compiled two vinyl sampler 12"s. The big track here for our money is "Night" by Bluemoon Productions; first released in 1990 on now defunct NY house imprint Code Blue, its breathy keys and rugged drums mark it out as one of the mix's standout moments. This shares the A-Side with Morphosis' bewitching "Too Far", arguably the finest moment on the Lebanese producer's recent album, while on the flip you'll find Signal's crackly subterranean anthem "Wismut" and FBK's paranoid steppah "Nanomal". Essential.

Bonne Nuit (5:35)
Review: Freshly-formed French trio BOA - aka Behzad, Ohes and Amarou - wrap themselves around the new decade and squeeze tightly. Joining forces with decorated French musician Mathieu Deranlot, they present four far-ranging deep electronic and ambient techno explorations that range from the dramatic-yet-beatless "Nitro" to the brooding, swampy slo-mo electrofunk of "Lumiere Electronique". Elsewhere "Merci Pierre" teases and squeezes even tighter with its trippy triplets and sudden dive into deep dream synths before "Bonne Nuit" closes on another ambient tip, this time switching the urgency for lullaby arpeggios. Sweet dreams.

The Alchemist (Marc Romboy remix) (7:09)
The Alchemist (7:01)
Review: Legends Stephan Bodzin and Marc Romboy come through for a surprise collab and rerub of their 2006 'vs' track 'The Alchemist'. Now apparently no longer at odds with one another - indeed, the rarely-used vs format implies a rivalry or playful opposition - we're now thrust into a more conventional mode of reinterpretation by way of the remix. In contrast to the original tech house tune's striking minimality and snappiness, Romboy's A-sided remix takes our familiarity with the original number as a given, eschewing the earlier feel for a much roomier, more cavernous and contemporarily "slick" sound. Luckily, we're also met with a remastered version of the OG version, with which we may compare and contrast the new iteration with the old's prodding 808 snares and cerebral, glottal 'yows'.

Review: DVS1's Mistress imprint acts as a side label to his main label Hush and is focused just as much on house as it is techno and everything in between. Upon first glance, it's pretty evident that these are some fairly austere techno tools for the second edition in his Mistress Special Release - why else rein in Madrid's master mentalist Oscar Mulero for the bleak, tunnel vision of "Drops". Border One (Form & Function/Invites Choice) appears with the chime-driven hypnotism of "Curve" which just so happened to appear on the label head honcho's recent Fabric mix, and Spaniard Maan (more commonly known as Psyk) serves up some rather Robert Hood sounding bleep minimalism on "Doubt".

Bodin - "A Walk In The Park" (6:15)
Review: Not On Earth's first release sold out in quick time - unsurprising given the reputation of Frankfurt based founders Bodin & Jacob. Their second is a various artists affair that shows off some of the talents they have unearthed, while Bodin also reappears with "A Walk In The Park." It's a brilliantly militant cut with clipped, marching beats and rasping bass squelches, and elsewhere Philipp Boss opens the EP with the slippery electro rhythms of "Lava". Griezman's "Decheterie" is an uptempo bit of proper first wave tech house a la Terry Francis. Closing out this more than handy EP is the hard edged electro-tech of "Zoober" from Martyne.

Miro SundayMusiq - "From Behind The Corner" (8:39)
Review: Following an excellent EP from Memphis, Animals On Psychedelics returns with more weird and wonderful party fare from the outer reaches. This time it's a various artists release that brings together all the producers involved in the label so far, while also introducing BPMF to the fold with the woozy, rubbery synth shapes of "Liza On Clouds." Jane Fitz and Dom Ahtuam's Invisible Menders project presents the rolling, psyched out melodics of "Three On Three," while Memphis pushes further into experimental territory with the wonderfully fractured "Altered States." That leaves it to Miro SundayMusiq to complete the EP with the wave-meets-Italo tones of "From Behind The Corner," a perfectly noirish flourish to finish a sterling record.

Review: Interdance is a new label tapping into the fruitful trancey tech house sound and its opening gambit features three artists doing great work within the sub-sub genre. Montevideo Electric main man Cabanelas is up first with the widescreen delights of 'Interdance', clearly an anthem of sorts for the label's direction. Then he links up with Soto for the more playful, acid-tickled workout 'Afilando La Faca' which could just as easily work at a warehouse rave as a conventional club. Mich takes over the B side with two contrasting cuts - the shimmering, transcendental '1937' and the synth-pop influenced 'Serotonina'. Along with the A-side tracks, they confirm Interdance as a new label to watch in this buoyant scene.

Review: The latest compilation album from COD3 QR is, as always, focused on eclecticism, open-mindedness, divergence and non-conformity, featuring the usual wide range of electronic music, all handpicked by Laurent Garnier and Scan X. The vinyl edition of this very latest edition of the compilation series - which was embarked upon in not long after the longstanding but mysterious label was revealed to be the fruits of the labours of this legendary duo, who had until then ran it incognito - comes as a condensed version of the digital, on which a terse seven tracks from the likes of Calibre, Seroplexx, Costello, Marcelus, Subground 3000, Lee Trax, Jim Rivers, Melatron and Ancient Artifact all appear. Though the label has set a high expectation with their admonition against "all expectations and all prejudices", they actually do extremely well to fulfil that aim. Most contributions here - from the steppy, sloppy 'Sump Dub to the just-plain-monstrous 'I Get My Kicks' - tend towards on the uncategorisable and unpigeonholeable, at least in terms of overtly boxed-in genre norms.

Exander makes a welcome return on the B-side with the moody "Odyssey", but there's also sparkling new dubwise immersions from Camelia and crafty micro-disco from Macarie to lose yourself in. Review: New label Rhythmic Science comes with a manifesto to release all shades of deep, spacey techno and this inaugural split artist release sets the tone nicely. The presence of Mark Archer should encourage many inquisitive techno minds to check this record out and those that do will feel right at home when they hear "Chuch" which is drawn from the same palette as his Nexus 21 material. However the other contributions also impress; Irish producer Derek Carr offers a meditative slice of classic Motor City Soul in "Centrepoint" that builds in sublime fashion, allowing him to show off his prowess for lush, glistening chords. Flip over and Scottish producer Black Jack presents his own homage to the Detroit techno sound with the wonderfully paced "Future Classic" whilst Mark Ambrose provides the 'slam it right into the mix' moment with his heavy pounder "Insane".

On the A-side (the bright one) you will find intergalactic jack groove represented by Contra Communem Opionem aka CCO (Zurich) and made acid trip together with the cosmic rider Andreas Gehm (Coln). the dark B-side accepts the challenge from imperfect planet's chastener Umwelt (Lyon) and a major black hole instigator Moralez (St. Petersburg). mastering is done on the international space station under the guidance of Alden Tyrell (Amsterdam). annals of the universe available only in the form of a physical plastic 12'' carrier in a limited edition of 300 copies...

Midi Drifter - "Old Beginning" (7:04)
Cee Breeze - "The Silent E" (5:40)
Review: As London In Transmission declare themselves - run by two geezers, both frequent ravers on the London underground scene - you should have some idea of what to expect from this record. It's the fourth drop on the label following releases from the likes of Christian AB, and the vibe is trippy, bleepy, ravey strains of old-skool outboard house music with a little of the minimal era's cheekiness etched into its bones. That's especially true of 'SSC (21 Edit)' by MIDI Drifter, while elsewhere you might hear the odd wigged-out ingredient that gels with the contemporary trance-house phenomenon. Either way, this is crafty, chunky gear to get dirty dancefloors greased up good n' proper.

Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Kerri Chandler - "Cobal"
Marcelus - "Y02"
Maan - "Jackin'"
Review: According to the PR blurb, Kern is Tresor's new mix series and focuses on "where old meets new, and house meets techno". The first mix comes from Parisian legend DJ Deep, from which these three exclusive, never-heard-before tracks are taken. There's plenty to get excited about, from the dubwise Detroit hypnotism of Marcelus' "YO2", to the techno-tempo deep, jackin' house of Maan's thrilling "Jackin". Best of all, though, is the contribution from the ever-impressive Kerri Chandler. His "Cobal" - a fusion of loose, swinging house beats, darting electronics and starburst synths - is arguably his strongest track for some time.

Lanzieri - "Vogue" (5:58)
Kvrk - "Haunted Illusions" (7:41)
Review: A compelling compilation that delves deep into the cosmos of techno, offering four tracks that each explore different atmospheric dimensions. On Side-1, Charlou's 'Hidefaces' sets a dark, spooky tone with its stomping beats, blending elements of techno, industrial and 90s rave sounds. It's a haunting journey that captures the raw, visceral energy of underground techno. Mar C follows with 'Wentron', a spacey breakbeat track characterised by its crisp production, which elevates the atmosphere with a futuristic edge. Side-2 opens with Lanzieri's 'Vogue', a track that brings a touch of goa-trance influence, combining ethereal melodies with powerful basslines, making it feel like a cosmic flight through sound. Kvrk's 'Haunted Illusions' closes the EP with a progressive house touch, providing a deep, entrancing groove that muystifies. Each track offers a unique exploration of techno's darker, more experimental side.

Review: Menacing EBM and dark synth billows from a Netherlands hinterland; our heralds speak of an esoteric encampment by the name of Espectro Oculto, said to be the remote incantators of an unstoppable curse in sound. Six shadowy emissaries have been sent to spread the pestilence; Trenton Chase, Martial Canterel, DJ Nephil, Exhausted Modern, Fragedis and Happy707. Clearly, the faction have recruited only the best, trusted and yet most nefarious of spies from as far-flung regions as Czechia and Argentina in the administering of such a sordid sonic plague. We're left most quivery at the centrifugal doom drones of Exhausted Modern's 'Fear Of Focus', across whose breakdown banshees are heard wailing and snarling, and Fragedis' 'Landing In Reality', a lo-fi techno freakout and sonochemical anomaly, channeling militant two-way radio samples and hellish FM synthesis.

Review: Monstrously glassy, yet heavy hard techno cuttage from the French RAW crew, who welcome four stunning audio fragments from various artists in their orbit. It's the seventh release in the Gemstones series, which is in turn inspired by different types of precious stones. Opener 'Neo Tokyo Vision' is an exciting and cutting tittilator, with massive rave stabs and a nigh-perfect balance of weight and highs, evoking the feeling of freely trawling the city at night with reckless abandon. Things grow grungier from thereon, with the likes of 'Black Mesa' and 'Burned Out' hearing the EP grow increasingly soily, subterranean.

First up on this 12" is Baby Ford's impeccable remix of Jin Choi, which adds extra layers of drama to Ford's trademark minimal clicks and pops. Sten's 'Circles' is a pristine, dubby tech house workout, while Mark Broom's 'Gira' sounds all the better for a modern remaster 25 years after its original release. Review: Adam Beyer's notable techno label Drumcode seems to be as busy as ever of late. The label here rolls out a fourth part of its ongoing A Sides series, which is now up to volume 12. Though the Swede himself doesn't feature, some of his trusty sidemen do starting with Chris Avantgarde who brings big room, hard techno energy to 'The Last Time'. Bry Ortega keeps it just as intense with the machine-gun like synth fire of 'Discover 9', Massano brings some brighter synth loops to the stomping 'Betraya' and Spektre shut down with a mix of hardcore, trance and techno potency on 'Too Far Gone.' Some great DJ weaponry here, for sure.

Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Review: Upstairs Asylum is kicking off the year in some style with a couple of killer new EPs. This one is the first in what is presumably a new series to showcase the talents of the Motor City. Mike Clark & Marcus Harris get things underway with 'Hey' which has a subtly uplifting feel thanks to the bright, sustained chords and cuddly drums. Santonio Echols's 'Piano In The Light' (DJ Emanuell Echols mix) is laidback, playful deep house with magical chord work and Brian Kage brings his classy depths to the smooth grooves of 'This Saturday Night.' Ryan Sadorus brings things to a close with the smoky 'Down Below.'

All We Have is Now is a Bristol-based label launched earlier this year by Will Clarke, having made big waves already via three successful singles and a collaboration with US house legend Marc Kinchen. Said singles are all included here on this special 12' vinyl sampler, with the tracks being quite a departure from the cheeky, bouncy and bass-driven tracks he first made his name with. From the powerful and uplifting Stateside house sound of 'U Take Me Higher', or the stomping heads-down basement jam 'Hallelujah' through to the roaring peak time banger 'Lord' with a ripping Reese bassline, steely rhythms and gospel vocals in the vein of Robert Hood's Floorplan project.

Paper Dollhouse - Space III (Joe Cocherell remix)
Paper Dollhouse - Drone I (Montalk remix)
Review: Material by London duo Astrud Steehouder and Nina Bosnic, aka Finders Keepers duo Paper Dollhouse, gets pulled into new rhythmic shapes by Joe Cocherell and Montalk on this compelling record for Resilience. Given his background as drummer in DVA Damas and propulsive techno output on Frozen Border, Cocherell is well placed to reinterpret "Space III" as eleven minutes of kraut addled techno that you could easily visualise James Holden closing out a Sonar performance with. Complementing this, Resilience's in-house mystery production unit Montalk take a more abstract approach to "Drone 1", submerging the vocals of Paper Dollhouse in all manner of spectral delay on a remix that forgoes rhythm in favour of all encompassing atmosphere.

Review: Furthur Electronix's first two Furthur Journeys Into compilations tune plenty of heads and shift plenty of copies. The third one keeps the quality levels high with more explorations around the periphery of underground electronics. Chris Coco opens with a soothing synth sound before Jake Slazenger brings crystalline synths and abstract modulations to the mid-tempo '168B.' There is more pace and twisted acid energy to Global Goon's untitled contribution and then old school jungle comes to the fore on the super stylish and atmospheric Gavin Masih cut. Monika Subrtova's 'Alata' is a serene and widescreen ambient synthscape that brings things to a suitably poignant close.

Review: Codex Empire's wingspan tech has been a glorious new entry into the techno sphere, as of late, and we have welcomed his output for aufnahme + wiedergabe with open arms. This week, he appears alongside Marmo with a heavy 12" for the sublime Khemia label, an imprint which has taken 2016 by storm with a series of magnetic releases from artists like In Aeternam Vale, Rrose, and Volte-Face, a Juno HQ favourite. The former's tune "Sevde" is a veritable steam-roller of a tune, banging its bumpy drums away helter-skelter, and accompanied by dark, brooding industrial sonics, while Marmo's "Alchimia" is more distorted, more deeply intertwined in its various percussive webs, but still of the same calibre as Codex Empire's tune. Two menacing techno killers with a simple yet effective vision.
