Review: The Groundhogs' debut album, Scratching The Surface, stands as a milestone in the British blues movement of the late 1960s. Released in 1968, this record captures the raw energy of the era, blending blues authenticity with a distinctive edge. Unlike their later works, such as Thank Christ for the Bomb and Split, this album sticks closely to the classic blues format, heavily influenced by the sounds of early Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown. Featuring the original lineupiTony McPhee, Peter Cruickshank, Ken Pustelnik, and harmonica player Steve Ryeithe album has both McPhee's original compositions and Rye's blistering contributions. Rye's 'Early in the Morning' and 'You Don't Love Me' are standout tracks, while the reworking of Muddy Waters' 'Still A Fool' is fierce and memorable. Newly remastered, this vinyl reissue restores the album's rootsy, moody blues sound with remarkable clarity.

Review: The Groundhogs' second album, Blues Obituary, released in 1969, marks a significant evolution in their sound, showing the band's ambition to transcend traditional blues. Tony McPhee and his band delve into a fusion of electric British blues and progressive psychedelic rock, resulting in a wonderful sonic journey. The opening track, 'B.D.D.', demonstrates their shift away from conventional blues structures with its refined guitar work and smoother melodies. Tracks like 'Daze of the Weak' highlight McPhee's extraordinary guitar work, propelling the music beyond mere blues variations. The album also features a diverse range of influences, from swamp rock in 'Mistreated' to the haunting 'Natchez Burning', reminiscent of classic southern rock bands. The experimental closing track, 'Light Was the Day' evokes their innovative spirit with freeform guitar and improvisational drumming. Blues Obituary is an essential listen that signals the Groundhogs' potential for greatness, as they chart their course into new musical territories. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of blues and psychedelia.

The interplay of Alejandro and Estevan Gutierrez's guitars evokes the nostalgic tones of 1950s Latin America infused with a modern flair. With 'Cosmic Sound' as a preview, the album promises a diverse range of influences, from cumbia to salsa, showcasing the duo's experimental yet focused approach to spiritual connection. Produced by Dan Auerbach, known for his work with The Black Keys, the album is poised to build on the success of their previous release. Review: Today! is Skip James' second album, originally released in 1966. Now reissued via Craft Recordings over half a century later, this 180-gram LP comes pressed onto heavyweight vinyl with proper retrospective care and attention. An almost entirely solo effort from the blues master, the likes of 'Hard Time Killing Floor Blues' and 'How Long' give atmospheric takes on hard times, amounting to a haunting account of cross-desert drives, driftings, and down-on-one's-luck limit-experiences. This 180-gram LP pressed at QRP includes an obi with notes by Scott Billington, a paper-wrapped jacket and (AAA) lacquers cut from the original master tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab.

Review: Recorded in 1968 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, California; Live Wire/Blues Power is a timeless live album by the great blues guitarist Albert King. Known as one of the "three Kings of blues" alongside BB King and Freddie King, this courtly rally, mic'ed up to pristine clarity, hears the wisest of these three wise men proclaim the universally apprehensible power of the blues. Alongside standards from Herbie Hancock ('Watermelon Man') and B.B. ('Please Love Me'), 'Blues Power' is the most salient track here, sticking out among the bunch as a song exclusively performed for this unassailable live show and this unassailable live show alone. "Everybody understands the blues... everybody from one day to another has the blues... you take the lil' baby that's laying in the cradle, he can't get that milk bottle fast enough, he go to kickin' and cryin' and going on tearin' up the little baby bed... he got the blues! Can you dig it?!" Nobody escapes the blues, and that is its power. Now, *that* is a message we can get behind.

Review: Two-piece band Hermanos Gutierrez, formed of brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutierrez, here continue to take influence from 1950s Latin American music and film, on their latest record El Camino De MI Alma. Recalling the barren landscapes stretching from the Midwest to the lower lacuna of the Gulf, this eight-track record is effortless in its ability to evoke boundlessness, the ineffability of the ever-extending horizon glimpsed while travelling, despite its ostensible sound remaining quite roomy, barely spring-reverbed if there is any treated sense of space. 'Hasta La Muerte' and its ilk are our highlights, bringing out the bare but lunar-luminescent feel of the vista; this is an album for guitar at arid dusk, not dewey dawn.

Review: In October 1999, the Black Crowes joined Led Zeppelin's legendary guitarist Jimmy Page for shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Worcester, and that resulted in the live album Live at the Greek on TVT Records. Due to contractual issues with Columbia, however, the album didn't include any Crowes songs performed with Page. This collaboration led to a summer 2000 tour with Page and The Who and on July 10, 2000, they performed at Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, New York, and served up what was considered one of the tour's standout shows. Featuring sixteen Led Zeppelin classics, Black Crowes tracks, and blues covers, this FM broadcast recording is a real must for fans of these rock icons.

Review: Light In The Attic brush dust off the crates once again, this time lifting Karen Dalton's 1971 classic yet mysterious country LP 'In My Own Time' out from the murk. The Oklahoma singer-songwriter's debut is technically a country-folk-blues covers album, but Dalton's signature vocal style and distinct manner of banjo playing renders each song unique. In time with its 50th Anniversary, this new and remastered LP version contains unseen photos, liner notes and other contributions from artists influenced by her such as Nick Cave and Devendra Banhart

Review: Karen Dalton is one of the most mysterious and enigmatic but also influential artists of her time. Her 1971 album In My Own Time is a real masterpiece that Light In The Attic now presented on newly mastered vinyl. It was originally recorded over a six month time frame at Bearsville and was crafted by producer and musician Harvey Brooks, a key figure in rock-jazz having worked on Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited and Miles' Bitches Brew. It's a wild and vivid record with walking basslines and manic melodies topped off with the expressive vocals.

Review: Gary Moore is the Irish guitarist best known for his prior involvement with Thin Lizzy, but the 1995 album Blues For Greeny netted comparatively little recognition for him. Needless to say, that's not what makes a great album, and this one's the opposite of a fame-seeking project anyway - amounting to a tribute album to his musical hero, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. All the tracks here adapt Green's originally written songs with finger-noodly flair, with the added help of Kinks bassist Andy Pyle to boot.

Born Under A Bad Sign was his first album for Stax, released in 1967. Variously famous pieces such as 'Crosscut Saw', 'The Hunter' and the title track all cemented his name, leading to its wide regard as a blues classic and later induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Craft now celebrates King's centennial year with special vinyl and hi-res digital reissues of this landmark album, mastered from the original stereo tapes.

Review: Junior Parker's Love Ain't Nothin' But A Business Goin' On reissue on Mr Bongo's Groove Merchant Records is a treasure trove of funk, soul, and blues that showcases Parker's undeniable talent and enduring legacy. Originally released in 1970 under the title The Outside Man and later reissued with the iconic car cover in 1971, this album captures Parker's buttery vocals and soulful grooves at their finest. From smokey blues to raw funk outings and orchestrated soul ballads, Parker effortlessly navigates through various musical styles with finesse. The album's standout feature is its three Beatles cover versions, including 'Taxman', 'Lady Madonna', and 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. Parker's reinterpretation of these classics breathes new life into them, infusing elements of New Orleans funk, psychedelic soul, and funky blues. The influence of Parker's music is undeniable, with his tracks being sampled by iconic artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, and De La Soul. His ability to blend genres and create timeless grooves solidifies his status as a Blues Hall of Fame inductee and a legend in the music industry.

Review: Sonido Cosmico finds the duo of Hermanos Gutierrez embark on a journey that eschews the traditional boundaries of instrumental music. Each track within this collection forms a rich tapestry that blends Latin rhythms with ethereal atmospheres to craft wordless narratives where the brothers' transcendent guitars speak their own eloquent language. The musicians each exhibit a subtle sophistication as they merge elemental and experimental elements that, while deeply rooted in their Latin heritage, showcase a contemporary execution that is both nuanced and expansive. As such the record shows the band's evolving artistry and bridges gaps of age and geography through music.

Review: It is fair to say that this Nina Simone live album really captures the legendary singer at her raw and most powerful best. Recorded during her 1969 European tour, this live recording showcases Simone's incredible ability to blend genres-jazz, blues, folk, and soul-while delivering deeply emotional performances. Songs like 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' and 'Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead)' reflect her lyrical prowess and elsewhere her activism and social consciousness shine through. Her haunting renditions of classics, combined with virtuosic piano playing, make for a magnetic listen that all these years on is a great record of Simone's enduring brilliance, charisma, and her role as a vital cultural and musical innovator.

Sounds For Saturday 1972 (Blu-ray)
Review: The Faces are ready to thrill fans with Shake, Shudder, Shiver, a comprehensive box set featuring all of the band's BBC concerts and studio sessions. This collection, which includes a wealth of previously unreleased material, has been meticulously remastered with the involvement of Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, and Kenney Jones. The Blu-ray showcases newly restored footage of the Faces' April 1972 performance on Sounds for Saturday. This concert captures the band at their best, exuding the infectious, exuberant energy of rock 'n' roll that has influenced generations. The hardback set contains a 48-page booklet with fresh insights from surviving members and archival quotes from Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and iconic BBC broadcaster John Peel. Filled with rare photos, the booklet chronicles every Faces BBC session, concert, and broadcast. BBC broadcaster Gary Crowley provides detailed liner notes, including a new interview with Jeff Griffin, who produced all of the Faces' BBC appearances. Many of the band's BBC recordings, once thought lost, have been recovered from archives and private collections. Rarities include a stereo mix of the May 13, 1971, Paris Cinema concert, and a February 1973 show that was never aired due to the band's lively interaction with the audience.John Peel's Christmas Carol Concert, originally broadcast on Boxing Day 1970, completes the collection but these is much much more!!!

Review: Last Night Blues is Texas blues guitarist and songwriter Lightnin' Hopkins' 1961 album, featuring avant-harmonicist Sonny Terry. The second of three album collaborations, this record flaunts Hopkins and Terry's different yet complementary styles, creating a well-rounded listening experience in pristine stereo. From the title track to the ending 'Conversation Blues', we're served vibes of a quiet recording space, in which Hopkins is provided ample room to muse on his various disappointments and dissatisfactions, both in romance and life. Though this is done in a manner that is convincingly purgatory, putting across the feel of Hopkins "getting on with it", despite the quibbles of life, in a manner that only the best blues music does. Terry's harmonica is like a vague but striking apparition, gliding it at just the right moments yet with just the right dose of when-to-play sensitivity.

Review: Carlos Santana's Shaman continues his rejuvenation trend, following the success of Supernatural. By collaborating with contemporary artists and seasoned musicians, Santana breathes new life into the album. The album's similarity to Supernatural is evident, but it doesn't detract from its quality. Santana's talent shines through, showcasing his continued creativity and musical prowess. Standout tracks include 'The Game Of Love' with Michelle Branch, 'You Are My Kind' featuring Seal, and 'One Of These Days' with Ozomatli. Santana gives his fans what they expect with Shaman. This edition comes on limited purple vinyl.

Backed by dynamic arrangements from Onzy Matthews, the album features well-known standards such as 'St. James Infirmary,' 'I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water,' 'Strange Fruit,' and 'Trouble in Mind,' among others. Each track really brings to the fore Rawls' deep, soulful delivery which is perfectly complemented by Matthews' masterful orchestration.

Review: Guns N' Roses' lead guitarist and vocalist Slash is an intermittent solo releaser, with his lone output beginning in 2019 with Living The Dream Tour. 2024's Orgy Of The Damned marks his fourth solo full-length, this time manifesting as a distinctly collaborative blues project, enlisting the help of a variety of legends in the style - and legends on Slash's speed dial - including Gary Clark Jr., Iggy Pop, Dorothy, Demi Lovato and Beth Hart. Recalling Guns 'N' Roses' early experimentations in the blues genre, albeit with an up-to-date, contemporary polish, this album of covers of the likes of Robert Johnson and Chester Burnett is sure to delight the diehards.

Review: Ecuadorian-Swiss brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutierrez, known as Hermanos Gutierrez, have long blended their multicultural heritage into a unique fusion of Latin American 'desert' sounds and surf rock on two guitars. After releasing four records independently, they joined forces with Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at Nashville's Easy Eye Sound. Their 2022 debut with the label, El Bueno y El Malo, brought their hypnotic instrumental guitar music to a wider audience, earning them slots opening for Jason Isbell, a viral NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and performances at major festivals including Bonnaroo and Coachella. The album was even nominated for Album of the Year at the 2023 Americana Honors and Awards. Returning to Nashville to record new material with Auerbach, the brothers expanded their sound further with Sonido Cosmico. Building on their established trust with Auerbach, they explored new sonic territory, aiming for a "cosmic sound" inspired by the film Dune. Sonido Cosmico showcases Hermanos Gutierrez's continual evolution and ambitious musical vision.
