Review: Helena is a record label based in Porto run by Goncalo (808). Limited vinyl only releases thus far have come courtesy of Module Werk, Aleks and Ephemeral and it is now over to one Altitude who, to those that know: is none other than Torontonian legend Matt Thibideau, who since the late '90s has been expertly executing dub techno experiments via his Blue Recordings imprint in addition to appearances on Daniel Bell's 7th City and more recently the promising Assemble Music: also from Portugal. A side cut "Transforming" has razor sharp precision in everything from the bass to those super tight dub chords and rhythms: shows the man is still as on-point as ever. Glacial aesthetics prevail well into the B side, with the deep and cavernous journey "Touch Sensor" and its immersive tones which gently scream 'welcome to the North' much in the same vein of Rod Modell or Brian Kage.

Review: Rawax drop another stunner of a reissue and it's by none other than Uwe Schmidt aka Atom Heart! The Milagro EP was originally released in 1994 on Our Choice as a CD and on London's Rough Trade as a 12". However, the German imprint has done us the favour of saving a L100 price tag on the black market, and have even remastered the tracks from the original tapes. Gorgeous, deep house swelters from start to finish, each track sounding as fresh today as it did over twenty years ago in a sweaty basement club. We're particularly fond of "Opcaity" and its cavernous bassline - a truly cutting-edge affair!

  4. Forgiveness (Cab Drivers remix) (6:41)
Review: After five years spent drifting between labels, James Barnsley finally found a regular home in 2015. Ever since, he's periodically released EPs on Vessel, with each successive EP being more impressive than the last. Predictably, his latest EP for the label is another winner. There are two Barnsley originals to choose from: "Time", where spacey but dubbed-out synth motifs cluster around a nagging bassline and gently pulsating peak-time tech-house groove, and the jazzy and more expansive deep house warmth of "Forgiveness". Cab Drivers turns in a delicious dub house rework of the latter, while tech-house veteran D'Julz serves up a far more driving and mind-altering take on "Time".

Review: Max Cooper has long been known as a DJ and producer whose immense technical skills are matched by an open-minded desire to try different things. Bearing in this in mind, you'd expect his two-disc contribution to the long-running Balance series to be rather special. Happily, it is, with the Nottingham-raised artist doing his best to balance (sorry) his desire to do things differently with the need to entertain. That makes for a fluid, slowly shifting and hugely entertaining affair where drifting experimental ambience, dewy-eyed deep house, acid-fired electro, melodious techno and weighty rhythm tracks rub shoulders with hazy tech-house, loved-up leftfield pop, crunchy IDM and the kind of clanking, industrial-influenced compositions that defy easy categorization.

  2. Moths In Wallets (feat Mr Mensah) (5:06)
  3. Backchat For Toprock (5:12)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

Review: Following fine outings from Bigneric and Dark Matrix last year, Childhood Intelligence sets out its stall for 2018 via a fine, compilation style EP. Fernando the Lobster steps up first, wrapping rich deep house keys and starry electronics around a deep electro groove, before Bigneric's "Ukrel" delivers a dose of deep tech-house goodness. Over on side B, Derek Carr unfurls spacey chords and analogue sounding drums on the quietly hypnotic "Ceres Station", while Cozmic Jazzz Futurist pitches down the beats on a deep, jazzy and almost horizontal late night soundscape. A strong start to the year, all told.

  4. Fornix (7:13)
Review: The latest tidy deep house 12" from West Australia's consistent Red Ember Records is the work of producer Pablo Arrangoiz. It's his debut release and as first attempts go, it's pretty tidy. Rich in analogue hardware manipulation and jaunty, jammed-out musical elements, there's more than a little jazz influence amongst the undulating synthesizer basslines and fluid machine percussion. In terms of highlights, we're particularly enjoying the deep, dreamy and bass-heavy electro/deep house fusion of "Formix" and "3MV", though the skewed analogue jazz-house of "Tortilla Flat" and "Sifting" is also tickling our tummies, too.

Review: The latest release from Seekers offshoot Twig showcases a quartet of cuts by new recruits to the label's growing roster of artists. Jacopo kicks things off via the surging but squeezy synth bass and classic tech-house tropes of "Biloxi", before Chris Geschwinder joins the dots between Brown-era Orbital and jacking 21st century tech-house on acid-fired workout "Marie Pose". The B-side opens with out pick of the bunch, a jazz-dance friendly futurist house odyssey from Modex propelled by squiggly acid lines and rubbery jazz-funk bass, before Lapucci rounds things off with the deep space techno bounce of "Clouds On Mars".

Review: These days, we're all familiar with Jan Jelinek's trademark brand of dusty, dubbed-out, jazz-sampling downtempo explorations. That wasn't the case when Loop Finding Jazz Records, his acclaimed debut album, first appeared back in 2001. It has since become an in-demand item, making this reissue more than handy. It remains a fine album; a blazed shuffle through a sonic world where dub techno, ambient, minimal house, jazz and downtempo grooves and seductive vinyl crackle merge into one intoxicating hybrid sound. It's not showy and over-the-top, but rather becalmed and subtly seductive. In other words, it's still a brilliant album and if you don't own already own a copy, you should add this to your cart sharpish.

Review: Omar S' FXHE stable has become synonymous with trend-setting house and techno over the last ten years. Moreover, each time Alex O Smith brings about a new name to the FXHE dynasty it's always exciting news - last time around OB Ignitt was introduced to us in fine style through his Star Wars-themed brand of raw-schooled house. John FM's "Where My Roots Lie" is similarly spacey and freaked out, synth-heavy and filled to the brim with intricate Roland percussion. On the B-side, "White Churches Be Like" is the ticket, where a broken beat arrangement is diced and shredded by ice-cold snares; but "Solace" is the unexpected track on here, a slow and funked-out r&b monster in true FXHE style. Another solid missile.

Review: Reno Ka first appeared alongside the Prince of Chicago house, Terrence Parker, on the mighty Planet E back in 2013 and, although we only heard her vocal talents on the particular EP, we knew that we'd somehow see her soon again. Here she is on the sixth outing from Music and Power with "Where Is The Love?", a smooth and silky house warmer that hangs in the balance between soulful and classic Chicago beatdown; it's one of those for the lovers, and a track that can be appreciated by both DJs and straight-up Saturday evening dancers. There's a dub version on the flipside where, of course, the vocals are stripped back to give more room to the sonics, a gentle sway of cooling synths and echoing flurries of harmonics. A wonderful EP that sits just right with us.

Review: Next on Rhythm Section International is newcomer Mallard. Discovered by label boss Bradley Zero after being a dedicated regular at 'almost every RS dance since 2016', the South London based multi-instrumentalist makes a serious first impression with this debut EP. Mallard's productions demonstrate, in the words of the label itself 'a keen ear for groove with a level of musicality rarely heard in electronic productions.' The 20 year old has already developed a unique sound palette and prodigious production style set to make him a name we will be sure to hear more of. This EP, at once varied in tone and tempo is held together by a strong sonic identity and an overarching artistic vision. Mallard's first offering to the world via Rhythm Section is one to remember.

Review: Having set out their stall via a fine first collaborative release on Bordello a Parigi a couple of months back, Mytron and Ofofo pitch up on Multi-Culti. As you'd expect from a label with such a strong track record of multi-cultural musical fusion, much of the EP defies easy categorization. Sure, you'll find a chunk of Italo-influenced electro ("Non-Binary Joys on the Venus Holodeck") and a couple of slabs of madcap disco-funk fusion ("Si Jambo" and "2Tac Onana"), but also a heavyweight slab of low-slung punk-funk/post disco ("Czary Mary"). Oh, and the skewed electro-funk-meets-intergalactic synth pop insanity of "Something for Your Mind", which also boasts some notably brain-melting vocoder action. More, please!

Review: Neik's debut came only a few months back, when the minimal-minded producer stepped onto our charts with a quirky little 12" for the fledgling Fun Records. A quick follow-up to cement his name was essential, and that's exactly what he's gone and done with this new EP for the Vara label's fifth outing. "Hacia Ningun Lado" and "Dresdener Strasse" proudly dominate the A-side as if it were a shooting ground, pushing forwards with two solid, tech-minded grooves that spew cerebral harmonics from all corners. On the flip, TC80 has the entire span of the vinyl to offer his version of the latter, and the results are one mean minimal punch with a subtle taste of Chicago house funk. Solid.

  2. Uppercut (7:00)
  3. Lux (7:29)
  4. Avoid (6:59)
Review: More deep and slinky tech house grooves for the late night here, courtesy of rising Romanian duo NTFO - this time for Leipzig based Bondage Music. This release follows up some great releases of late by the likes of Mihai Popoviciu, Sascha Dive and Tuccillo. On the Esperanza EP, there is the rolling and hypnotic bounce of the title track, the druggy and minimal groove of "Uppercut" (that's more suited to afterhours shenanigans) while the sexy deepness of flipside cut "Lux" shows a more sensitive and charming side to the Timisoara based duo's ever developing sound.

Olo
Cat: OLO 2. Rel: 08 Nov 17
  1. Track 1 (10:30)
  2. Track 2 (7:26)
  3. Track 3 (8:38)
Review: We'd like to say that Italy's mysterious Olo series launched in a blaze of publicity earlier this year, but the label actually took exactly the opposite approach. Happily (for the people behind Olo, at least), their first 12" found its way into the hands of many top tech-house selectors. Predictably, they've said nothing about the identity of those behind this follow-up. On the A-side you'll find a gently trippy, hugely hypnotic excursion that justifies its near 11-minute length thanks to some neatly timed percussive shifts. Flip to the B-side for the acid-fired micro-house chug of "Track 2" and the darker, alien-sounding tech-house funk of "Track 3". While the A-side is probably the best bet for bigger rooms, we're actually enjoying the B-side cuts far more.

  4. Nelson County
Review: Despite having already released a 16 track album this year, Detroit's finest, Omar S, proves that there is quite simply nothing stopping him as he issues the four track Nelson County. "Don't Let Dis Be HapNin! Comes on like the classic "Psychotic Photosynthesis" at witnessed through a haze of smoked glass, while "U Heard What Da Man Said Muthafukka!!" is something much more driving, like taking a spin on Detroit's streets after dark in a souped up Dodge Charger, before "Nelson County" sees the tough house-focused denouement take place in a dingy backstreet club. As always with Omar S, this stuff doesn't mess about....
