Shimmy Shimmy Ya
Cat: COMBO 003. Rel: 21 Dec 20
  1. Shimmy Shimmy Ya (Big Mac edit) (3:48)
  2. Brooklyn Zoo (Big Mac edit) (3:57)
Review: While this may have the look of a bootleg release, we're reliably informed that DJ/producer Big Mac reworked these two 1990s Ol' Dirty Bastard classics from the original stems. You can hear that on the excellent A-side version of 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya', which boasts fatter drums, a more DJ-friendly intro for mixing and - more surprisingly - a fresh second verse lifted from a completely different record. The version of 'Brooklyn Zoo' has some additional percussion, too, giving the jam even more weight than it had first time around. Given that the original was bass-heavy but relatively percussively light, beefing up the beats was definitely a smart move from Big Mac.

The Choice Is Yours
Cat: MRB 7193. Rel: 08 Dec 20
  1. The Choice Is Yours (Revisited) (4:03)
  2. The Choice Is Yours (3:27)
Review: Mr Bongo is back with more stone cold hip hop. This one comes from 1991 and is a reissue of a UK only 7" from Black Sheep. The single was always a curio and remained in the shadows of the more catchy and commercially successful 'The Choice is Yours' but it does have a great hook and tumble-down charm to the production. Dres is the MC bringing the character and plenty of carefully dug out samples make this one standout above many of its peers. An original copy of this will set you back a fancy few quid so when you also add in the break fuelled remix on the flip you have an essential little pick up.

Peas In An Alternate Universe
Cat: JB45 001. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. Jorun Bombay & The Espressolites - "Peas In An Alternate Universe" (4:22)
  2. Jorun Bombay - "Mister Magic" (A Jorun Bombay edit - alternate version) (3:19)
Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

Cat: BS 017. Rel: 16 Nov 20
  1. Merry Christmas (3:37)
  2. Santa's Coming (3:24)
Review: What could be more exciting for the funk lover in your life (whether that's you or someone else) than an insanely limited-edition, festively themed "45" from famously reliable party-starter DJ Tron and his regular vocalist Luana? If that sets your bells jingling (sorry), we'd suggest diving straight into A-side 'Merry Christmas', a veritable yuletide feast of boisterous drum-breaks, gravelly guitar riffs, rising horns and sleigh bells, all topped off by a few choice samples and another superb lead vocal from Luana. The pair continue on a similar tip on flipside 'Santa's Coming', a funk-breaks masterclass dedicated to the jolly, chimney-bothering present delivery guy. Only 95 of these hand-numbered sevens were ever pressed, so act fast if you want to grab a copy.

Review: This exclusive Record Store Day 2020 7" pairs two hit singles from Detroit rapper Eminem's highly acclaimed Slim Shady LP in limited quantities. The a-side offers up one of his most iconic singles, one that truly helped establish his confrontational lyrics and loose lipped 8-mile style. It first came in 1999 and garnered Eminem his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Mixing up comedy, horror and hardcore rap, it was produced by Dr Dre and is utterly attention grabbing. Flip it over for another Dre produced join in 'Bad Guys Always Die' (From Wild Wild West Soundtrack).

Cat: MRB 7163CLEAR. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. I Ain't No Joke (3:55)
  2. Eric B Is On The Cut (3:44)
Review: Mr Bongo are in the midst of a series of Eric B & Rakim reissues and next up on a limited 7" is 'I Ain't No Joke' backed with 'Eric B Is On The Cut.' The a-side was a first single from the legendary pair's debut studio album Paid In Full and was always one of its most monumental moments. Rakim's rhymes grab you from the off and don't let you go, with the man himself saying it took four days to get this one right. Samples of Dexter Wansel and The J.B's really make it pop. Going down a deeper path, with big DJ scratches, reversed stabs and an even more old school flavour, 'Eric B Is On The Cut' is another vital jam.

Review: Eric B & Rakim's Paid in Full album from 1987 was jam packed with heat. It's still a landmark album all these years later and Mr Bongo know that, so serve up a special 7" with one of its most well known tunes, 'I Know You Got Soul.' It's got all that old school flavour - the scratches, cut up vocals, singing break beats and super cool vocal delivery. Of course, Bobby Byrd samples feature heavily and helped make this one an artistic and commercial success, with everyone from Rolling Stone to NME counting it in their respective Greatest Songs Ever lists.

  1. Aretha Franklin & Black Star - "Young, Gifted & Black" (4:50)
  2. Aretha Franklin & Gucci Mane - "My Chain Of Fools" (2:48)
Review: Over the past few years, American producer Amerigo Gazaway has delivered some of the most inspired mash ups and bootleg remixes around, including a number that breathe new life into recordings by genuine soul and hip-hop greats. He's at it again here, crafting two killer cuts featuring the late, great Aretha Franklin. He first offers up a head-nodding take on 'Young, Gifted and Black' that cleverly combines his own beats, extended raps from Tallib Kewli and Mos Def as Black Star, and snippets of Aretha at her powerful best. Flip the disc for 'Chain of Fools', a stomping fusion of hip-hop and Detroit soul which sees him flit between Gucci Mane raps and more Aretha goodness.

  1. The High & Mighty - "Dirty Decibels" (3:57)

Review: Another 5 Boroughs Breaks release means another gold standard hip-hop banger. This one is from
The High & Mighty duo who hailed from Phillie and were active in the nineties. Their 'Dirty Decibels' is a sleazy joint with prying bass and sliding drums that get under your skin. The rhymes flow smooth and the samples are sweet. Flip it over and you'll find where they come from - a rare library music tune by Simon Haseley called 'Hammerhead.' It's a 60s gem with harps, horns and serene strings that make for a luxuriant sound.

Review: The lead track from their evergreen album of the same name, Libretto & Buscrates's 2019 vibe 'Eternal Ridin'' takes us cruising around Watts on extra-pumped tyres as XL Middleton gets in the remix. Flipping it from a woozy, Faze-O sampling day dream into a full-on nocturnal block party, XL lives up to his name again. Meanwhile on the B, C Scott provides the same uplift to '(When The) Music Is On' giving it a crisp swing and organ hook that's not dissimilar to Ugly Duckling. Keep on ridin'.

Review: Drop 6 is the latest in an ongoing mix series that finds British rapper Little Simz flexing her skills over an extended release. It's a fine work that puts her lucid vocal flow front and centre. She muses on meditation, self-reliance and occasionally stores a moment to big up herself. It has an alluring vibe, gloomy in places, empowering in others, and often feels as lonely as lockdown will have been for many. The artist has said before she pushed through something of a crisis to get the record finished and that always shines through, but only to the betterment of the results.

When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

But before that, the pair actually self-released their debut on Actual Records, and it went on to become a hard to find, much in demand 12". The greatness that was to come was hinted at on the music with superbly concise raps and tight production that made for two faultless singles. Review: Fresh from the release of his tribute to hip-hop culture's dancefloor roots, the essential "Disco Rap" single, DJ Moar returns to familiar territory with a guest-packed album of boom-bap beats, blink-and-you-miss-them skits, and deliciously deep rap songs. Moar's backing tracks ripple with warm and woozy instrumental flourishes and jazzy samples, while the accompanying raps, from MCs including Napoleon Da Legend, Dirt Platoon, Sadat X and LS Brigandes, are on-point and entertaining. Such is the all-round quality, in fact, that it sounds like a long-lost set from hip-hop's golden age.

A fan favourite packed with guests like Aceyalone, AWOL One, Busdriver, and Gel Roc, and production by Canada's heavyweight Factor Chandelier, it's a slept on classic. Review: DJ P and the Breakbeat Junkie have been working together as Second Hand Audio for well over a decade, though this contribution to the Toxic Funk series - the fourth in total, fact fans - marks their first joint appearance on Breakbeat Paradise. In keeping with the series' party-starting ethos, A-side 'Dance to the Beat' sees them cannily combine chunky funk breaks with old school hip-hop snippets, vintage soul vocal lifts and jangly instrumental samples from what sounds like a breezy cover version of the Jacksons' 'ABC' (but probably isn't). The smile-inducing fun continues on flipside jam 'Treacherous Love', a slower, hip-hop-tempo number that peppers a head-nodding beat and funk-rock guitars with vocals from an all-star rap number.

Review: Over the last decade, Hideo Sasaki has gained a reputation for being one of Japan's premier turntablists and beat-makers, consistently offering up now hard-to-find seven-inch singles that combine "golden era"-influenced backing tracks with raps from some seriously good - and in some cases well-known - MCs. The Far East Quality EP acts as a showcase for the producer's work, gathering together previously seven-inch only tracks and unheard remixes. It's universally excellent, though our highlights include the bustling, string-drenched excellence of 'No Love Lost' featuring Diamond D, the boom-bap brilliance of Large Professor hook-up 'Jewel of the Day', and both versions of 'Laced With Tragedy', Sasaki's collaboration with Tragedy Khadafi.

Review: We might be nearing the end of 2020 but this year's endless Record Store Day keeps on serving up more new wax. This special 12" from Island is limited in numbers and features ouse big remixes of tunes by R&B sensation The Weeknd. First up is the pitch shifted vocal work and late night neons of a 'Heartless' remix, then Chromatics subtly tweak 'Blinding Lights' in a longing pop anthem. 'Save Your Tears' (OPN remix) is a more upbeat and feelgood tune that gets you swaying and then a Vapour Wave version of 'Heartless' skews those synths and layers up cold trap beats. A Saturday Night Live version of 'Scared to Live' and far sighted and reflective remix of 'After Horus' rounds out the EP.

Review: New York City based hip-hop MC/producer Angel Aguilar is 8 Off, and his 1995 debut album Wrap Your Lips Around This remains his most well known. It's a mix of scene-setting skits and various hip hop styles: there is the celebratory pomp of 'Ghetto Girl' with its big horns and sweet rhymes and the deep cut and observational 'Neighbourhood Hoe' as well as classic boom bap joints like the excellent 'Life Aint Easy.' It serves as a reminder of hip hop's heyday and is a welcome time machine back to a simpler time.

Review: Amongst those more qualified to comment on the contemporary New York hip-hop scene, Al Doe is something of a rising star. He's been bubbling away for a while now, learning from mentor and fellow Latino MC Fat Joe. The Dona Blanca Trilogy is, somewhat surprisingly, his first project to ever appear on wax. It was quite clearly inspired by New York hip-hop of the late '90s and early 2000s, with his hard-hitting, often conscious lyrics about poverty, crime and ghetto life working in perfect unison with RocNation A&R and renowned beat-maker Spanish Ran's intricate, boom-bap inspired backing tracks. It has the feel of a future classic, but don't take our word for it: check out the clips now!

Review: Time has been kinder on the Beastie Boys' first and most explosive hip-hop album than many would have thought at the time. Their combination of snotty nosed brat rapping and Rick Rubin's trademark production, combining raw, meaty breaks and metal riffs, was assumed to be a flash in the pan back then, but rather a fad it would turn out to be the inaugural offering in a stream of classic albums that would delight heads and also recruit millions of new fans over to the genre's side. Massive breakthrough hit '(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)' is here , of course, but the tracks that sound the freshest now are the mean and lean 'No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn', 'Hold It Now, Hit It' and opening track 'Rhymin & Stealin', powered by beats originated by Led Zep's John Bonham. A laugh, yes, but seriously good at the same time.
