Going To The Party
Cat: FJAL 366. Rel: 13 Jan 22
  1. Going To The Party (feat Lyrics Born - extended 45 mix) (3:56)
  2. Utility Man (feat Andy Cooper) (3:27)
Review: UK beatmakers The Allergies are absolute Jalapeno mainstays who always serve up suitably sizzling and funky sounds. Following on form their last album Promised Land here back in September 2021, two of the singles from it now get pressed up to 7". The a-side is an extended version of 'Going To The Party' (feat Lyrics Born) with big drum breaks, live vocals and an atmospheric back and forth with super sized horns. 'Utility Man' (feat Andy Cooper) is a deeper, smoother cut with some mega slick vocal rhythms and lovely double bass sounds to get you bumping.

Situation Hot
  1. Situation Hot (6:03)
  2. Situation Hot (Intrumental) (6:25)
  3. Situation Hot (radio edit) (4:41)
Review: The Arabian Prince & The Sheiks is actually Kim Naze. He debuted on this label back in July with a reissue of an EP that dates back originally to 1985 on Rapsur Records. Now he is back with more of his rugged, proudly analogue electro goodness in the form of this scintillant and throwback single 'Situation Hot.' It first came in 1986 so bares all the loveable production hallmarks you would expect from that era - icy cowbells, jacked-up drums, serene chords and a beat to make you move your body in funky fashion. The original comes with an edit and instrumental.

Ebonics
Ebonics (7")
Cat: 45K 06. Rel: 14 Jan 22
  1. Ebonics (3:27)
  2. Size Em Up (3:38)
Review: Lamont Coleman, aka Big L, was one of the brightest talents in the New York hip hop scene through the mid 90s, both as a solo artist and as part of the D.I.T.C. crew. Sadly he lost his life in 1999 at the age of 24, stopping him short of what should by rights have been a much longer and fruitful career in music. Here 45 Kings dig out one of his strongest moments, the 'Ebonics' / 'Size 'Em Up' single from 1998. It's tough, street level rap of the highest caliber with Rondell Turner on the buttons, and it sounds as vital now as it did nearly a quarter of a century ago.

The Big Bonus Beats
Cat: SRW 023. Rel: 02 Dec 21
  1. The Big Bonus Beats (A Jorun Bombay edit) (2:26)
  2. Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit) (4:40)
Review: Jorun Bombay is back once again with more of his masterful beat mash ups and beat juggling 7"s. This is his second this week - well, it's a black wax version of the same EP where the other is bright pink, both on Soundweight. He opens up with 'The Big Bonus Beats' (A Jorun Bombay edit) which has crashing drum hits and an iconic vocal mashed together with some funky guitar riffs and plenty of big, oversized and splashing cymbals. 'Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit)' is a super sweet jam with a plunging synth bassline and more classic vocal samples that lend it a neo-soul feel.

A New Day (Is Here At Last)
  1. JC Davis - "A New Day (Is Here At Last)" (3:10)
  2. Hell Razah - "Project Jazz" (feat Talib Kweli & MF Doom) (3:47)
Review: The Originals label always does a grand job of pairing the sweetest source material with its famous sampling counterpart, and most importantly they put the originators up front on the A side. This time around they're celebrating the ascendant jazz funk masterpiece 'A New Day (Is Here At Least)' by legendary saxophonist JC Davis, originally released in 1969 and sounding fresh to this day. On the flip comes an open-hearted approach to the iconic brass licks courtesy of Hell Razah, with none other than Talib Kweli and MF Doom in full flow over the top for the impeccable 'Project Jazz' from 2007. Two absolutely golden sides on a perfect little 45, what's not to love?

Eu Bebo Sim
Eu Bebo Sim (green vinyl 7" limited to 100 copies)
Cat: BH 120GREEN. Rel: 25 Jan 22
  1. Eu Bebo Sim (4:06)
  2. Marraio (4:31)
Review: The fresh new tropical green 45rpm from Djar One is a trip to warmer and sunnier climates in Latin America. Strictly limited to just 100 copies it opens with 'Eu Bebo Sim,' an upbeat and funky tune riddled with infectious keys and tumbling drums, bird calls and bendy basslines to make you shift. The comes 'Marraio,' an even more lively jam this time define by its infectious horn sections and suffering samba rhythms, with spaced out synth work adding a trippy vibe under the Portuguese vocal raps.

Eu Bebo Sim (7'' limited to 200 copies)
Cat: BH 120BLACK. Rel: 25 Jan 22
  1. Eu Bebo Sim (4:05)
  2. Marraio (4:31)
Review: It may be cold and dark outside, but Djar One - a producer renowned for the party-starting quality of his sneaky re-edits, remixes and mash-ups - is determined to heat things up on the dancefloor and get us daydreaming about sunnier times and warmer climes. It's for that reason that his latest cheeky 45 delivers beefed-up, club-ready revisions of two classic Brazilian cuts. A-side 'Eu Bobo Slim' sees him add rolling, disco-style drums to an electric piano and acoustic guitar-sporting samba singalong, while flipside 'Mariano' is a tooled-up, breakbeat-driven take on what sounds like a vintage MPB number. Serious heat!

Different Roads EP
Cat: NQ 029. Rel: 05 Jan 22
  1. Great Height (feat Verbz) (1:57)
  2. Different Roads (feat Verbz) (4:10)
  3. Different Roads (instrumental) (4:10)
  4. From The Concrete (feat Sleazy F Baby) (1:21)
  5. Product Of The Streets (feat Sleazy F Baby) (4:10)
  6. Product Of The Streets (instrumental) (4:10)
Review: The dream team Dogger & Mindstate return to TNQ wax with this hearty package of soulful, hip-hop-influenced D&B flavours that was originally unleashed digitally last summer. Representing both their pathways into this music, from north to south, the duo recruit the likes of London's Verbz and Manchester's Sleazy F Baby to vocal and narrate their delicate, subtle but ultimately heavyweight rhythms. From the deep jazz of 'Different Roads' to the symphonic dynamics of 'From The Concrete', this is one of the hardest hitting and emotional records Dogger and Mindstate have made so far.

It's My Thing (reissue)
Cat: MRB 7196. Rel: 03 Dec 21
  1. It's My Thing (5:43)
  2. You're A Customer (5:22)
Review: Mr Bongo has already reissued a swathe of classic albums and singles from legendary hip-hop duo EPMD, whose place in the pantheon of rap greats has long been assured. Here they continue to mine the duo's catalogue, delivering a new edition of the pair's 1987 debut single (which, it should be noted, has long been hard to find on "45"). 'It's My Thing' remains a classic hip-hop club cut, with flowing rhymes rising above a backing track rich in raw drum machine hits, aquatic p-funk bass and sampled snatches of a smooth, disco-era soul number. Flipside 'You're a Customer' is a more sparse and stripped back affair, with slightly faster-paced raps riding stuttering beats and a squelchy synth bassline.

You Gots To Chill
Cat: MRB 7198. Rel: 14 Jan 22
  1. You Gots To Chill (4:14)
  2. Let The Funk Flow (4:19)
Review: Mr Bongo's EPMD reissue series continues with a fresh pressing of one of the NYC duo's most significant and best-loved singles, 1988's 'You Gots To Chill'. Predating much of the West Coast G-funk material that later covered similar sonic ground, it sees the duo delivering some of their rap verses over a beat crafted from samples of Zapp's P-funk classic 'More Bounce To The Ounce' and Kool & The Gang party classic 'Jungle Boogie'. This time round, it comes backed by another EPMD classic from the same period: the mid-tempo, JB's-sampling head-nodder that is 'Let The Funk Flow'. That's never appeared on a single before, making this "45" even more desirable.

The Big Payback
Cat: MRB 7197. Rel: 14 Jan 22
  1. The Big Payback (4:50)
  2. So Wat Cha Sayin’ (4:57)
Review: A 7" is all about having a perfect nugget of music on the most compact of wax, and here Mr Bongo pick out two of the best cuts from one of the greatest crews to touch the mic. EPMD were on their finest form when they dropped Unfinished Business in 1989, doubling down on the runaway success of their debut Strictly Business, and here we get two of the album's hottest joints for your instant gratification. 'The Big Payback' piles the funk on heavy, keeping it moody in the low end for EPMD to do their thing over the top, while original opening track 'So Wat Cha Sayin' nestles on the B side with one of the wildest rub downs Erick and Parrish ever committed to record. Truly essential hip hop from the golden era.

Strictly Business
Cat: MRB 7199. Rel: 14 Jan 22
  1. Strictly Business (radio mix) (3:30)
  2. Strictly Business (instrumental mix) (5:25)
Review: EPMD arrived as an almost unbelievably well-formed hip hop group in the 1980s. Right from the moment they dropped their 1989 debut - 'Strictly Business' - they soared, immediately backed it up with 'Unfinished Business' in 1989 then came more big hitters like 'The Big Payback.' But 'Strictly Business' remains one of the NYC duo's most significant and best-loved singles and it is pressed up here to its own 7" courtesy of hardcore fans Mr Bongo. It's a track with tons of samples, scratching, smooth bars and churning beats. Flip it over for an instrumental.

Cat: MRB 7195. Rel: 03 Dec 21
  1. I'm Housin (4:00)
  2. I'm Housin (instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Although it was originally released at the height of hip-house mania (1988 to be exact), EPMD's 'I'm Housin' is not a rap-sporting house record. It is, though, a bona-fide club classic, with E Double E and PMD trading verses atop a rolling, dancefloor-friendly groove built from elements of Aretha Franklin's 1971 soul classic 'Rock Steady'. All these years on, it still sounds fresh - as this Mr Bongo reissue of the rare 1989 UK seven-inch version proves. In a word: essential.

I Sell Rhymes Like Dimes (remastered)
  1. I Sell Rhymes Like Dimes (vocal) (3:51)
  2. I Sell Rhymes Like Dimes (instrumental 2) (4:22)
Review: Greedy Fingers is the hip-hop production team made up of Howard Stevens, Smimooz and Wim Verbrugghe and they have been turning out plenty of albums and 12"s since the turn of the millennium. This new 7" is a reissue of a track from right back then: it was the first cut on the b-side of the Shady Sirens / Greedy Fingers LP produced by DJ Grazzhoppa and Greedy Boy in 1999 for DC Recordings. It's an erie one, with some distant and trippy sonics and an ice cold beat that still sounds future to this day. The menacing bass sings low while the bars come with a sweet sense of flow.

Cat: THROW 701. Rel: 10 Dec 21
  1. It Was A Good Day (4:25)
  2. You Can Do It (feat Mack 10 & Ms Toi) (4:24)
Review: The first missive from the reissue-focused Throwdown imprint takes a deep dive into the bulging back catalogue of West Coast hip-hop legend Ice Cube. Side A offers us another chance to own 1992 hit "It Was A Good Day" a languid, sun-kissed Golden Era jam crafted from elements of a familiar slab of laidback jazz-funk. Over on side B you'll find 1999's "You Can Do It", another once high-profile single featuring additional verses and vocal contributions from Mack 10 and Ms Toi. For those who've forgotten it, the track is a punchier and heavy club cut that utilizes all three rappers' distinctive flows to ratchet up the intensity throughout.

Sound Of Da Police
Cat: ES 765001. Rel: 30 Nov 21
  1. Sound Of Da Police (LP version) (4:14)
  2. Hip Hop Vs Rap (4:42)
Review: Taking the reigns for a repress, Jive Records have taken the important step of revisiting KRS One's rap classic 'Sound Of Da Police'. Besides the popularity of its uniquely catchy 'woop woop' refrain, this early 90s gem was the second and final single from KRS One's debut album Return Of The Boom Bap, and importantly criticizes the hypocrisies of the American justice system, as well as the horrors of racial profiling and police brutality. Besides the events of 2021 making this year the most appropriate time yet in which to re-release such a song, the funk heads at Juno will be keen to spot this classic's sampling of several greats, including licks by Grand Funk Railroad and Sly And The Family Stone.

Review: Cover versions don't come much sweeter (or respectful) than this epic two part homage to the Babe Ruth classic. Part 1 sees the Japanese funk band laying down the foundations, paying deference to the original with their own upbeat twist. Part 2, however, is where they really let loose with each instrumentalist taking lead on the solos. With Hammond-hammering and screaming horns galore, QASB have delivered something very special here.

Review: This new 45 features tasty reworks of both Chaka Khan single 'Like Sugar' - a 2018 jam co-produced by Switch and Sarah Ruba best-known for featuring on a high-profile TV advertisement - and the track it's based on, Ruba and the Fatback Band's 2016 version of 'Do The Bustop', a take on the much-loved funk classic recorded for the soundtrack to Netflix series The Get Down, with fresh lyrics and vocals. Since neither track is easy to find on vinyl, these relatively light-touch buy undeniably floor-filling interpretations are borderline essential. As the lyrics state, they're so sweet and good enough to eat!

It emcees in many different forms but thermion mix is a hard hitting bit of throwback boom bap. Its raw hip hop with big horns and elastic bass beneath those neck-snapping hits. The verses deliver extra attitude and edge while musing on street life. The rocked-out b-boy vibes continue through a Scratchapella, instrumental and combination of both that is finely called a 'Scratchapella.'

Review: Yvette Michele was a breakout star in the glory days of mid 90s RnB, and her My Dream album still shines as a true gem from the era. Produced by, amongst others, Funkmaster Flex and Full Force, Michele's moment in the sun was brief but brilliant, but now you can enjoy two of her best on this perfect nugget of a 7". 'I'm Not Feeling You' is a funked up blast of empowerment, while 'Everyday & Everynight' takes things in a slinkier direction for those lights down moments. It's pure soulful perfection, from Michele's smoky vocals through to the bass-loaded production.

Review: Just over a quarter of a century after it first hit record stores, Aaliyah's second studio album, One in a Million, returns in deluxe form. Presented in a box alongside a stencil and celebratory T-shirt, the heart of this remastered edition remains the original album. It was one of the R&B sets of the 1990s and features a cast-list of contributors (think Timbaaland, Missy Elliot, Kay-Gee, Lightly, Jerkins, Dupri and Slick Rick) that reads like a veritable who's who of hip-hop and soul heavyweights of the period. Highlights include the head-nodding headiness of 'Hot Like Fire', the gorgeously warm and woozy 'A Girl Like You', the Isley Brothers-sampling slow jam 'Choosey Lover (Old School/New School)' and the Marvin Gaye-biting Slick Rick hook-up 'Got To Give It Up'.

Review: Chicago's MC Abdominal - in his own words - comes through with a phenomenal reissue of his very first cassette tape as Ab Flex, which was first released in 1998 and sold out of his knapsack. This might just be one of the few legitemately solid examples of "lyrical spiritual" conscious rap, melding clean retroised boom bap beats with laugh-out-loud rhymes brimming with confidence and audacit, from the cryptic Quasimoto-esque free associations of 'While You Sleep' to the two-part maverick's theme song, 'Head Games'. With the aid of Belgium's Hip-Hop Enterprise, he's even secured an expanded edition with a whopping 6 extra bonus bits - all new tracks.
