4625 002
4625 002 (12")
Cat: 4625 002. Rel: 15 May 19
  1. Sedition (6:32)
  2. Crown Of Nails (6:26)
Review: One year later, UVB-76's shadowy collective 4 6 2 5 strike again with two more unique startling schematics. Flexing across the tempo axis, "Sedition" leads with a fast 170 twist as hard pneumatic kicks cut through the dense foggy atmospherics before doubling up the momentum and taking unpredictable twists midway. "Crown Of Nails" maintains the hunchback pressure and that heavy foreboding sense synonymous with each member of the collective, but does so at a cool 105BPM pace giving space for each percussive element to ricochet around your purdy little pranged-out soul.

  1. No Era (7:09)
  2. No Era (Alex Jann Planet Transmit mix) (5:36)
  3. No Era (Secret Universe Biosphere mix) (5:58)
Review: Adam Shelton returns to his breaks/electro alias A-Future once again with "No Era". Taking off where the launch release "Cybernetic" left us, it's another tense rolling jam that nods back to the very foundations but with added 2020 production punch. Think Tim Wright jamming with Ed DMX and you're on the right path. Remix-wise Alex Jann lays down a pacier, more layered set of rhythm logistics while mysterious alias Secret Universe closes with an authentic jungle reversion, imagine Tim Reaper in a chilled mode and you're on the right star-path.

Tremor EP
Tremor EP (12")
Cat: SUBB 012. Rel: 02 Jun 21
  1. Tremor (5:56)
  2. Reflector Dub (5:46)
  3. Intercept (6:02)
  4. Hold Water (5:15)
Review: Longstanding Finnish pair Aeon Four serve up never less than crucial drum & bass weaponry on the always vital Finnish label Straight Up Breakbeat. As plays the pair explore a range of different moods and grooves within a contemporary drum & bass framework. Opener 'Tremor' is a floaty light groove that is filled with airy hi hats to start, then dark and heavy bass arrives later on. There is a real raw heart-of-the-rave intensity to 'Reflector Dub' and its hardcore breaks, then 'Intercept' manages to pair celestial keys and lush chords with another drilling riddim that pins you to planet earth. Closer 'Hold Water' is a fun closer with a hefty low end wobble.

Sub Terrain One
Sub Terrain One (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: SUBTERRAIN VINYLONE. Rel: 06 Sep 19
  1. Affliktion - "Malcom's Break" (4:44)
  2. Affliktion - "Nite Rithym" (5:06)
  3. Affliktion - "Sunday Atmosphere" (4:29)
  4. Dreamlogicc - "March Liquid" (6:12)
  5. Dreamlogicc - "Clique On" (6:47)
Review: Sub Terrain One is the first in a series of split EPs featuring high tempo bass music by ffliktion & dreamlogicc. Three cuts from ffliktion on the A side pair classic jungle breaks with hazy atmospherics and weighty basslines. Two cuts from dreamlogicc on the B side touch on hypnotic trance progressions with deep spacey textures.

Azarca
Azarca (12")
Cat: AM 014. Rel: 25 Aug 21
  1. Azarca (7:15)
  2. Azarca (Synkro remix) (6:10)
Review: Pioneer Dev Paradox dons his Alaska furs for another blustery, ice-cold adventure - 'Azacar'. A journey powered by beautiful, spacious jazzy breaks, a sustained chord and marbled washes of human and synthetic textures, it's the type of transcendental track that can flip the hardest of jungle sets into an oasis of restraint. If that's not quite enough, the one and only Synkro is on hand with a fantastic remix that swaps out the breaks for lithe autonomic drums but retains every ounce of the original's mysticism and otherworldliness. Stunning.

In Ether (12")
Cat: WRX 22. Rel: 26 Oct 21
  1. Money's Worth (4:37)
  2. Worp (6:20)
  3. Haa (4:22)
  4. Digital Fluid (5:52)
  5. In Ether (4:41)
Review: Decentralise this! The mysterious, anonymous, clearly hardcore till they die All Trades comes correct on Warehouse Rave with five slabs of grimy rave mischief. Instantly giving bang for buck, 'Money's Worth' goes all in on the reversed and stretched out mentasms before a whole cavalcade of chaos ensues... 'Worp' is all about those bubbly rounded basses the likes of which Nookie perfected, 'Haa' is pure hardcore adrenaline, 'Digital Fluid' takes us further into the future with a mid-90s d&b schematic while 'In Ether' finishes the EP off on a deeper, spaced out one. Bosh your bitcoins.

Monster Killer EP
Monster Killer EP (red vinyl 12")
Cat: AKOB 023. Rel: 29 Jun 21
  1. Monster Killer (6:18)
  2. Crystal Ball (5:33)
  3. 95 Sciences (5:33)
  4. Look Into My Eyez (7:51)
Review: Having taken us to the ninth level last year with his bulldozer return LP, Nubian Mind Alpha Omega returns to Stretch's AKO Beatz with more monstrous material. Literally; 'Monster Killer' sets the parameters with its industrial strength breaks and subtle 4x4s kicking away in the apocalyptic mix. In classic jungle style 'Crystal Ball' flips the vibe entirely for a much smoother, jazzier look into the future. Flip to the B for more killers as the deeply woven '95 Sciences' tips its hat to the type of dense outer planetary trips of Klute while 'Look Into My Eyes' is a salute to the early Headz razor's edge. Do the monster mash.

Re:align EP
  1. Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
  2. Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
  3. LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
  4. Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Cat: APH 66. Rel: 01 Oct 21
  1. Big Booya (6:15)
  2. Control Yourself (6:27)
  3. Lovely Feeling (6:18)
  4. Deep In The Jungle (7:15)
Review: Strap in for the latest transmissions from Amazon II, aka a collaboration between Tony B and Gavin King (aka Aphrodite) that has its roots playing on classic 90s hardcore station Pulse FM. This EP pulls together four of their best originals and each one brims with old school brilliance. 'Big Booya' opens at blistering speed, with wild spin backs and diva vocal cries. 'Control Yourself' will nail you to the floor with its precision drums and silky basslines, while 'Lovely Feeling' is more of a deep roller with killer soulful vox. There's an air of new age melody and heavily bliss to closer 'Deep In The Jungle' that leaves you feeling high.

Ruthless In Purpose: Insidious In Design
Ruthless In Purpose: Insidious In Design (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: ODY 012. Rel: 25 Aug 21
  1. Ruthless In Purpose: Insidious In Design (6:48)
  2. Provocateur (6:20)
  3. Status Anxiety (5:56)
Review: 'Ruthless In Purpose: Insidious In Design'... Just in the title alone you know the Odysee captain means business with these three tracks. Lavish is their cinematic feel and brazen organic drum tones and textures; each cut gets darker as we creep around in the jazzy 3am shadows of the title track, we're pranged out by the minimalism and stark spikes of 'Provocateur' before doing the running man all the way home to the heavier, more curmudgeonly design and purpose of 'Status Anxiety'. Ruthless, insidious and seriously authentic jungle.

Blueprint (12")
Cat: ODY 011. Rel: 16 Dec 20
  1. Blueprint (10:01)
  2. Broken Image (5:57)
  3. Low-Tech (5:33)
Review: Original 90s drum & bass label Odyse keeps on showing the others how to do it with a second solo EP from label partner Andy Odysee. His sound remains true to the roots of the imprint and to the music from Source Direct and Mirage which helped establish it in the first place. Opener 'Blueprint' has crisp, steel plated and militant drums and a groaning, paranoid bassline down low that keeps you on edge. 'Broken Image' cuts more loose, with far sighted pads disappearing off the horizon as silkier drum loops get you locked. The most dark and involved of the lot is 'Low-Tech', but an achingly gorgeous female vocal sounds keeps things getting all too macho.

  3. Dance Like Dolphin (5:18)
  4. Dance Like Dolphin (Jay remix) (5:56)
Review: Fresh from her debut on Super Drama, Angel D'Lite returns with her Banoffee Pie debut 'Dolphins Have Sex For Pleasure'. Great title, beautiful sounds as Angel runs the hardcore gauntlet on 2020 blades... Within seconds of the breakbeat kicking in, 'Crystals' will realign your chakras while Diamante gets all floatation tank on you with a subversive downbeat remix. Flip for 'Dance Like A Dolphin', an equally ravey piece of hi-NRG dynamite laced with breaks and surging synths and occasional forays in juicy jungle techno 4x4s before Jay strips everything back to reveal a stern and dubby slice of deep house. Go bananas.

  3. Machine Learning (4:03)
  4. Makedonski Oro (3:38)
Review: Inspired by her free party roots, Sydney's Anomie laments this year's Corona-related rave restrictions with the powerful SOS collection on Inna Riddim. Running the full gully gamut, we kick off with the gnarled and steppy 'Car Park RDM' where the two-step does all the negotiations. It's back by a full range of flavours: the Fracture-like bashy ravey monster 'What You Gonna Do About It', the big jazz swing and theatre of 'Machine Learning' and the blissful downbeat finale 'Makedonski'. All bass bases covered, Anomie's message is loud and clear.

  1. Shui (7:14)
  2. Escapism (6:52)
Review: Samurai slice into 2020 with all the precision and energy their name promises. This time the man holding the blade is Manchester's Antagonist who follows up his appearance on the label's 10th anniversary album in 2018 with this deadly debut 12". Title track "Shui" is a militant beast with thundering drums doing all the negotiating while "Escapism" is more of a layered affair with heavy atmospheres and lighting breakbeat flurries. Both hit the spot in the best way possible. Welcome to a new decade.

Cat: RNO 025. Rel: 05 May 20
  1. Gate 9 (6:56)
  2. Duat (6:37)
Review: Developing a pristine name with their digital output, Ronin Ordinance come correct with their first ever vinyl release. It comes courtesy of old friend and ally Antagonist. Every bit as dark and tense as his recent output on Samurai and his own co-run label Discipline, "Gate 9" is an ocean of heavy pressure pads and glacial chords around bone-snapping (but sparingly placed) breaks while "Duat" tells a tale of Egyptian mythology over a tribal, percussive halftime arrangement. Tense sounds for tense times, Antagonist's on the money here.

Cat: NHS 325T. Rel: 18 Apr 18
  1. Apex - "Echoes" (5:16)
  2. Unknown Error - "The Yearning" (Super VIP mix) (9:24)
Review: It's been seven months now since the death of Rob Dickeson AKA Apex stunned the drum and bass community. "Echoes" is the last known track that Dickeson completed and is being released by Hospital Records in order to raise funds for Help Musicians UK's Music Minds Matter campaign. It's rather good, too, with poignant pianos, stirring strings and melancholic chords floating over a snappy, liquid funk beat. It's accompanied on the flipside by a fantastic, floor-friendly "Super VIP" mix of "Yearning", a soaring 2006 cut Dickeson produced alongside Jim Gash as Unknown Error. Top tracks and a worthy cause: this should be an essential purchase for D&B heads everywhere.

Review: Wake up and smell the breakbeat! Transmute return with another absurdly good collection of tracks from friends old and new. The mysterious Army Of Ghosts set the scene with the breezy, deep and beautifully Good Looking-esque 'Dreaming'. Greenleaf and Ornette Hawkins follow with some of the wildest drums you'll hear this season. Cosmic jazz right down to the twinkling keys, this will fry minds! Finally Latent Notion closes on a deep space stepper vibe with 'Lapse'. Timeless time travelling... Sleeping is for winners.

The Series: Season 1
Cat: INTLP 003S1. Rel: 12 Sep 18
  1. Degrees Of Separation (4:54)
  2. Missing Piece (4:29)
  3. Tannan (4:34)
  4. Street Scenes (3:47)
Review: According to Integral head honchos Artificial Intelligence, their latest EP "comprises four exhilarating episodes that will take you on an exhilarating journey". It is, then, a box set of sorts: a short season of all-action cuts designed to entertain from start to finish. They fittingly begin with something suitably filmic - the sweeping cinematic movements, head-in-the-clouds atmospherics, punchy beats and sumptuous vocals of "Degrees of Separation", before fusing elements of soul and neo-classic on superb liquid roller "Missing Piece". The experienced duo cleverly ratchet up the tension on the creepy, heavy and intense B-side opener "Tannan", before reaching a triumphant conclusion via the smooth and life-affirming brilliance of "Street Scense".

Review: Still riding high off the success of their album with Charlotte Haining back in May, BCEE now come back strong with a powerful EP on Dutch label Fokuz Recordings. It's 'Crystal' that opens in thoughtful fashion with bold bass notes and a crisp breakbeat that meanders as you get lost in a day dream. There's a more raw energy to 'Poodle Dub', while playful horns bring some colour. You head will be amongst the clouds as the lush chords of 'Love Drunk' are draped over a rolling break and airy vocals soar up top. 'Stitched Up' closes out with more crisp beats, and this time tumbling melodies that fall like rain.

Review: Grenoble's Binary Digit (Dream Ticket/Opal Tapes) appears on a split EP here with Belgian debutant Victor Ziegler, to inaugurate new imprint Postal Code Records on From Berriat To Pitteurs (PCR001). On the A side, Binary Digit is in fine form on the wacky acid-jungle hybrid of '4020 Pitteurs FM' followed by the lo-fi chiptune electro of 'Ob_Break'. On the flip, Ziegler takes the rolling breakbeats of the '90s UK underground and merges them with the aesthetic of dreamy electronica of the time - namely on Warp or Rephlex - with the glassy-eyed and bittersweet epic 'Nostalgic Aerobic' which was easily the standout tune on this stellar EP. Keep your eye on Postal Code Records in 2021.

Review: Linking up for the first time since 'Thoroughbred', kindred spirits Sam Binga and Hyroglifics collide to create their biggest collaborative body of work to date; 'Wicked & Bad'. Not just a kooky title, it truly is loaded to the lips with naughty... The opening system shaker 'Wicked' with long-time compadre Redders, the ice cold electro thrills of 'Wits End', the Riko Dan-front bubbler 'Bad' and the trippy instrumental grime finale 'No Dice' are all primed with the wickedness, and indeed badness, one needs to survive in these nonviable times. Critical in more ways than one.

A new stable for the unclassifiable and experimental, the label launches with two D&B jams from label co-boss Bike TM. "Trust The Process" takes a technoid stance on the genre with Kid Drama style simplicity and unhurried breezy pads. "Real Highs" flips for a deeper jam that nods to more of a Goodlooking rooting. Watch out for those jazzy little flurries. Tasty.
