Buddha Machine Blue (buddha machine)
Cat: 635937 Rel: 06 Feb 17

Small plastic box that plays meditative music composed by Philip Glass - blue
Notes: More than a decade ago the Beijing-based duo of Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian released their first "Buddha Machine" loop box, a quirky pocket sound system that propelled sound art into the consumer mainstream. For their newest release, Virant and Zhang team up with Philip Glass for a special-edition Buddha Machine to commemorate the legendary American composer's 80th birthday on January 31, 2017. This new unit comes in two soft-tone colours, and offers seven long-playing loops of distinctive and hypnotic Glass works, featuring piano, organ and voice. Requires 2 AA batteries (not included).

  4. North West Plaza (3:27)
Review: Nicolas Motte, Raphael Top Secret, and Antinote's head honcho Zaltan debut their 18 Rays project with this sublime little album and, although this might sound like we're heading into hyperboles, it is probably the best example of modern cold wave that we've heard over the last five years. "I Feel Rain" is a wonderful piece of music with a subtle hint of Joy Division's melancholic drone at the core of its vocals, while "The Empty Stairs" encapsulates everything that we love about downtempo. "Long Time Ago" meanders into open seas thanks to the outfit's solemn vocals and electric use of sparse and explorative guitars, which leaves the fluttering harmonics of "North West Plaza" to linger beautifully in their own ambient swing. Warmly recommended.

Review: French producer 1977 aka Matsa, delivers a bold and subtle blending of ambient textures, deep pads and raw rhythms perfectly mixed with some minimal sequences. In Brief, a fine and complete piece of electronic music, made with constant attention to detail. Starting out with the hauntingly emotive ambience of "Tkg" where sub bass pulsations lurk between the crackling of surface noise, pitch shifted vocals and transcendental chilling pads, then the dusty and emotive deep house of "Soso" which is informed equally by Fred P as it is by the likes of Lawrence. On the flip, there's the rather Fred P sounding "Mondat" which is the highlight a smoothly emotive deep house number while "Toine" gets dubbier and subterranean in a way that UntilMyHeartStops fans will appreciate.

Review: New label Tell Zero Records hits the ground running with a 10" ambient white label that really impresses. There is some lush, slow motion tribalism on the A side that dives deep into the exotic. On the flip, the second beatless journey features some sombre and evocative Olafur Arnalds style piano playing over some haunting field recordings assembled into a captivating collage.

Review: Clean Slate is the first release from Addremove on Swiss label Threnes. Addremove is an electronic music project with a unique approach. The sound of this production is lush, minimal and dark, echoing influences as diverse as ambient music, experimental electronica and darkwave. The EP features six tracks with eerie and industrial overtones, including opening number "Letter From Police" with its drones and industrial percussion backed by mesmerising textures. "Lurk" is certainly one of the most striking tracks on this release, where the bass synth creates an all-embracing sonic landscape, while a sudden burst of glitchy beats breaks the pattern unexpectedly. The remixed version of "Crie" is pitch black and austere, with the legendary Justin Broaderick adding jackhammer beats and grindcore guitars and 'going for a powerful and uncompromising tone.'

The group has been likened to the early work of Front 242 and sing in English and Swedish. The band was founded in 2004. but have made music since 1986. Dutch label Enfant Terrible have championed their works over two EPs in the early noughties. This being their first outing in several years! Review: While Detroit is usually associated to either house or techno, history tells us that there have been a few key bands to stem out of its industrial landscape. ADULT is one such outfit, made up of Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller, a duo whose tunes began to emanate back in the late 90s under the Artificial Material moniker. Admittedly, the techno element is contained here, but their rough, molecular experimentations are rich with aggressive electronic fervor, making them a natural part of the city's heritage. Jack White's legendary Third Man Records presents their Live At Third Man LP, a wild-eyed collection of some of their best tunes from recent and past years, all of them offering us something unexpected and, ultimately, absolutely raucous. Forget that designer shit, this is the real deal when it comes to noisy post-punk with an electronic edge.

Review: Thankfully, Richard D. James has decided to finally release at least some of the output that he's been banging on about since mid-2000s. In a number of interviews, the might Aphex Twin hinted that he has vast artilleries of tracks stacked up and unreleased, probably more on purpose than out of laziness...or maybe not. What we do know is that AFX is reborn after the string of acid 12"s released about 10 years ago on Rephlex, that saw the alias become one of the most popular of James' alter egos. Orphaned Deejay Selek is a collection of tunes that contain all of the Twin's magic and unpredictably, but that also cut straight to the point and head to the middle of the dance floor. This is banging brain dynamite coated in the man's iconic style and flair. Welcome back AFX, and many hats off to Warp for making it happen.

Fans of Becker's recent works will really appreciate these extreme and at times challenging sonic workouts on both sides, approximately 15 minutes each. Both extended pieces are reductionist electronic sound art at its finest. Very intrigued as to what this imprint is up to next.

Review: Arc Light Editions are steadily becoming the masters of outsider reissues. In the last few years, the productive label has resurfaced valuable material by Arthur Russell, among others, and this summer they have turned their attention to Finnish electronic pioneer, Pekka Airaksinen. The original edition of Buddhas Of Golden Delight has never received a proper re-edition until now, and it has remained rather expensive on the second-hand market. This is no surprise, however, as Airaksinen's use of drum machines and electronics still sounds as fresh as ever, and the LP sits perfectly with the current state of affairs in the experimental music scene. From the grainy, watery beats of "Sakiri", to the oddball drones of "Kandrasuryapradipa", this is pure sonic drifting at its most daring. Lovers of modular electronics, please go ahead and indulge. This is warmly recommended.

Review: Indigo and Synkro return for Houndstooth duty under the Akkord guise, with HTH020 their first material for the fabric-affiliated label since last year's roundly praised debut album. That long player was perhaps the most confident display of the sound design-heavy production style the Mancunian pair had been narrowing in on since their cultish white label bow, but this new 12" finds them adding whole new levels of darkness to the mix. Moody low end sits deep in the channels; given the space to breath by Akkord who seem careful to restrict their drum samples to the barest of appearances at times (see "Gravure") whilst those out there that enjoyed the Millie + Andrea album for Modern Love will probably gravitate towards "Continuum" which showcases a murky, raw take on breakbeat-led jungle.

Review: This 12" sees the welcome vinyl edition of remixes of Akkord's "Gravure/Continuum" from Fis and Regis which originally appeared on a CD issued through Fabric's Houndstooth label earlier this year. With the Mancunian duo possessing such a clinical take on rhythmic construction; it's always interesting to see how artists commissioned to remix Akkord choose to approach the task. Sometime Tri Angle artist Fis is on impeccable form twisting the track into paganistic string-laden ambience on his self-styled 'Hayfield To New Mills' version which brings to mind "Hashshashin Chant" era Demdike Stare. Downwards boss Regis goes for gravelly broken techno on his 'Whip Hand' mix though he channels similar levels of spectral foreboding to Fis in the underlying human groans set deep in the mix.

Review: The most famous whistler in cinema (so arguably the most famous whistler in the world), Alessandro Alessandroni has contributed to cinema, TV and music with as much influence as his old friend and collaborator Ennio Morricone. He was also making some incredibly innovative electronic compositions on the side, it would seem... These four variations were found in an old archive in his African home and have never, before now, been heard before. From the densely-layered spaghetti-flavoured "Afro Voodoo" to the soft sultry swoons of "Afro Sentiment" by way of the sheer dancefloor pump of "Afro Discoteca", this is a truly remarkable find for Four Flies. Made all the more poignant due to his recent passing, too. You know what to do.

"Civil Defense" by Danny Alias first emerged in 1984, a strange proto-everything-that-has-come-since track which was spun by the great Ron Hardy and has been a long term favourite of Smagghe and his KTDJ cohorts. It gets another lease of life thanks to Smagghe and Leon Oakey's always entertaining Les Disques De La Mort label with no less than five different versions to choose from, including a re-edit from the aforementioned Ron Hardy.

Review: Earlier this year Minimal Wave offshoot provided one of this year's most visceral dancefloor weapons in Kino-I, the debut from Doug Lee's new An-I project. Taking inspiration from techno, jack, industrial and punk, An-I successfully drew a line under some of the Berlin-based artist's previous disco-flavoured endeavours. And then some! If you like the Kino-I 12" you will love the new triplet of An-I productions housed on this appropriately titled Gutz 12". The title track alone should come with a health warning; such is the furious onslaught of machine funk it contains, whilst the unnerving "Rut" is the most schizophrenic production you will hear this year. Best of all id closing track "Save Us" sounds like a cross between in Aeternam Vale and Silent Servant. Pressed on a rather thick and dashing slab of magenta orange vinyl!

Review: Berlin's Michael Wollenhaupt returns with yet more potent darkwave techno: a signature sound he has honed over the years in the Ancient Methods project which he has helmed since the departure of Conrad Protzmann a few years ago. Appearing here for London based Candela Rising, which has previously presented works by other dwellers of the industrial fringes such as Violet Poison, Eomac and Manni Dee. Starting off with the epic war anthem "Swallow The Screw" (featuring New York City's Azar Swan on vocals), its then onto the pounding jackhammer rhythms of "The Standards Will Come & Go" featuring the legendary Dave Foster aka Huren who howls hysterically through layers of distortion throughout. On the flip is the EP's most seductive moment on the slow burning and atmospheric EBM groove of "It Won't Take Me". This one features Tropic Of Cancer's Camella Lobo on vocal duties.

Review: Greek experimental techno producer in Berlin ANFS is a staple of the Inner Surface Music collective and presents another excursion in difficult greyscale listening. Starting out with the ultraviolence of "Blood Trophy" with its body bashing bass assault and overdriven drones washing over you with blatant fury, there's then the broken beat industrial techno onslaught of "VPA" which will appeal to fans of Talker or Simon Shreeve. By the way Repitch man D. Carbone aka Honzo steps up to deliver a seething and slow burning remix. Finally, strap yourself in for the abrasive soundscape of modular abuse on "Zevra".

  5. No One's There (dub)
  6. Yang Yang (dub)
Review: The deadpan tones of Berlin based singer songwriter Anika see a welcome return on this eponymously title EP for the Stones Throw label. This six track collection is dominated by the towering cover version of the Chromatics classic "In The City" which has been a long term staple of Anika's live show's with backing band Beak>. Whereas the Italians Do It Better was all sultry Italo disco and delicate vocals from Ruth Radelet, Anika's cover is one take rattling punk funk at it's finest and her own distinctive vocal delivery lends the track a sense of palpable desperation. Dub versions of album favourites "Ying Yang" and "No One's There" features alongside further cover's of tracks by The Kinks, Shocking Blue and The Crystals.

  2. Systems Breaking Down (Dance remix) (6:56)
Review: Reissue specialists Be With have a reputation for unearthing slept-on or hard-to-find gems. Their latest 'find' is Anna's Systems Breaking Down, a fairly obscure, left-of-centre synth-pop cut that's long been a favourite with Italo-disco DJs. This 12" reissue includes both versions from the 1982 RCA 7". The A-side boasts the skewed original, where Anna O'Malley's stylish vocal and frustrated screams intermingle with sustained chords, chiming melodies and fuzzy, downtempo drum machine beats. The real killer, though, is the stripped-back flipside "Dance Remix". Boasting less vocal, delay-laden drum hits and woozier chords, it's this version that has long been a favourite amongst collectors.
