Review: Coyote / Buzzard Country A bird shrieks. This is Buzzard Country after all. Two wise old balearic owls rub the sandman from their peelers, and cast their gaze upon a new day. Stretching to greet the Sun, giving thanks, and remembering all those lucky years that went before. All the long journeys into night, days of altered states, and morning-afters staring out to sea. Veterans at this game, fixed on the horizon. Cosmic synths purr over a sleepy Rave baseline. Sparse, spare piano, and woodwinds pick out a path, to help you wind your way home. Around the houses, down forgotten roads. A Spanish guitar plays in the harbour, and the memory of yesterdays parties' 4 / 4 boom sparks a slow, easy Acid flashback. Echoes of 90s IDM, Intelligent Dance Music, clever beats for stoners, mixing with the faded, but not jaded, vision of an introspective White Isle sunrise. There's the spectre of a spine-tingling rush. The keys kick it off. Percussion rattling, a breakbeat shuffling, as you recall the dancers. Flamenco's shout, stamp and clap, the songs of passion, songs for heroes, while lives less ordinary screen inside your head. Movies of your own making muddling up the photo-album snapshots, and the make-believe. Tabla touches, marimba tones, and Eastern drone adorn an oasis of Dub. Conjuring a psychedelic North Africa. A mirage where Tuareg nomads cross the Sahara, accompanied by tasikisikit and prayer. Then the backing track's spinning in reverse, to score a coastal drive. Wayfarers on, as clouds caught in time-lapse charge against the blue

  5. Culture Rescue Service (5:09)
Review: Emotional Rescue is proud to reissue a collection of global music band, International Noise Orchestra, presented across 4 special EPs.

Founded when Berlin based musician Ulrich Hornberg mixed a newly acquired Commodore 64 with visiting Algerian drummer Jol Allouche's tablas "old culture meets new technology" the fundamentals were laid. Simple, maybe naive, with a curiosity to combine and inspire. 'The means of production must belong to the workers', investing in a studio, label and publishing house allowed INO the adventure to record what they wanted, a project via 'gastes', taking their influences and culture, in a melting pot of eastern melodies, african percussion, jazz, soul, dub, and pop an orchestra not of size, but of different playing styles and idiosyncratic interpretations.

Old meets new starts with their cover of Gimme Your Lovin, taking Winwood's classic and molding a white funk, pop, rock, dance hybrid, with enigmatic actor / singer Richard Strange's distinctive poetic delivery. Following Dr. Sarmaz, released under INO's alias - Internationales Gerauschorchester - the global dance vibrations begin.

Feel It Flow is pure 80's dance pop, with Glynnis Thomas (Savage Progress) distinctive tones leading to the jazz fusion of Atai, before closing with the guitar / synth / tabla rhythms of Culture Rescue Service.

Hey! (7")
Cat: ERC 096.
  1. Hey!
  2. Can We Rebuilt Our City?
Review: Sometimes a record comes along that is a wonderful anomaly that really is all about the music. Silver Leaf recently appeared on the radar via obscuro diggers on both sides of the Atlantic and landed with a Hey!
What is known about Silver Leaf, beyond that it was a short-lived mid-80s project out of Cincinnati, Ohio, is that it features ex-Zephyr keyboardist John Faris, working alongside the mysterious vocalist Silvia Leaf.
The difference between the blues and occasional psychedelic rock of early 70s Boulder, Colorado's Zephyr and the lo-fi recordings of Silver Leaf are striking, but in Hey! and Can We Rebuild Our City?, the power of the ballad and strong playing of John, is wrapped in mid-80s, mid-States lo fi heaven.
Whether a non-de-plume, Ms Leaf's searing, innocent vocals fly above John's keys and programming. Hey!'s repetitive exhalations act like a mantra to a party, while tom's chime in accompaniment. Here it comes!
Can We Rebuild Our City? starts with Faris' forlorn intro before crashing percussion heads to some kind of wonderful, as Leaf questions a calls to hearts.
Releasing just 3 singles, Silver Leaf's music is unique and essential, an experience and a delight to present.

Review: Fabrizio Esposito was born in Naples / Italy into a family of passionate musicians and vinyl collectors. His father played guitar in Tony Esposito's band who was responsible for some classic Italo tracks from the early 80's. He spent his early childhood immersed in his grandparnent's extensive vinyl collection which he has since inherited, this collection heavily influenced Fabrizio and made him a fan of Italian Wave, Italo Disco, Neapolitan Funk, Soul and Disco. After all these years working in clubs and with artists Fabrizio decided it was time to realise his other dream and become a DJ and producer himself fusing together his rich musical heritage combined with his clear vision for the future, creating his own unique sound. Fabrizio explains that since he was 14 he had always been behind the scenes of parties, from a PR to a promoter, always watching the djs and producers working to create the party around them. Since this time he has always been an obsessive vinyl collector, its in his blood, so now it's time for Fabrizio to share his own passion for music with the world.

Fast forward to summer 2019, Fabrizio made his Ibiza debut DJ'ing alongside DJ Harvey and Pete Gooding at La Torre and soon after Fabrizio finished his debut track 'This Way' which was premiered by Harvey at his now 'Mercury Rising' party at Pikes.

Review: 19 years ago, Ulrich Schnauss became one of the most celebrated new artists in electronic music when he released debut album "Far Away Trains Passing By", a gorgeous and life-affirming set that cheerily joined the dots between IDM, picturesque electronica and shuffling downtempo grooves. As part of his current reissue project (five albums have been given the re-master treatment), Schnauss has decided to reissue it. The main set sounds as alluring and life-affirming as ever, but the real bonus for fans is the inclusion of no less than nine previously unreleased cuts recorded in the same period. These aren't cast-offs or throwaways, either, but rather tracks every bit as good as those that were originally releases.

  5. Listen To The Earthbeat/The Driving Force
Review: Emotional Rescue presents the 2nd EP (of 4) highlighting the music of International Noise Orchestra. Centered around Ulrich Hornberg and Wolfgang Sperner, aka producers Gemini Brothers, this world "supergroup" released 5 LPs and 2 EPs in just 4 years.

Again showcasing their rhythm, calm and power, a metaphysical, real sensitivity and intellectualism, all wrapped around the groove. Starting with their own instrumental remix of Gimme Move Lovin', this little known 12" B side has long been a play for "heads" and allows the band's Pop Balearic, esoteric meets electronics to shine, layering Fairlight samples over a funky bass 4/4 around some '88 Amnesia pool dive.

Next the anthem, Yeh Naina Yaad Hai, as Asha Bhosle's beautiful vocals from the Manzil Manzil soundtrack, are mixed with drum machines to create a dream Bollywood meeting.

Again side two features 3 songs and starts like EP 1 with Glynnis Thomas (Savage Progress) vocals, now atop a sax laden Synth Pop brain, mind and body dance. Alias, Internationales Gerauschorchester offer wonderful jazz leanings for A Lulu A Bobe Danz, where the "bop" takes a leftfield embrace. To close then, Mr Richard Strange returns, invoking The Driving Force, returning to the idiosyncratic, percussive Earthbeat. Listen!

Review: Carl Weingarten and Multiphase Records return to Emotional Rescue with a collection of the music of Delay Tactics and their live, reel-to-reel and collaborative experimentation, that spawned two remarkable albums.

After meeting guitarist Reed Nesbit from the St. Louis new wave scene , Weingarten joined forces for a series of concerts, performing with guitars running through tape looping delay systems similar to Robert Fripp's 'Frippertronics' ideals.

Producer and engineer Walter Whitney joined to record the debut album, Out-Pop Options (1982), when it became clear his skills were a perfect addition. Recording to 4-track analog tape, the sound developed from drone based to proto-techno pop. Digital technology, drum machines, guitar pedals and digital effects offered creative freedom that resulted in rhythmic, kraut inspired pieces.

These Kosmiche leanings retain a unique US aesthetic and continued after Nesbit's departure. When guitarist David Udell joined for Any Questions? (1984), greater explorations - now recorded to 8 track - pushed the envelope to a wider sound.

In an age of endless holy grails, the work of Delay Tactics has a resonance, spanning Eno to Ashra but with a place and sense beyond Europe and towards to new age and fourth world leanings of Laraaji, Hassel and Karma.

A Strangely Isolated Place (reissue)

Review: On its initial release in 2003, Ulrich Schnauss' second album "A Strangely Isolated Place" caused something of a stir, with many critics naming it amongst their highlights of the year. Listening back to this freshly remastered edition, it's easy to see why. It was the first time that Schnauss really nailed his now trademark sound, mixing ultra-bright, life-affirming electronic melodies with stirring ambient chords, gentle (but often distorted) beats, jangling guitars, audible nods towards shoegaze and warm basslines that drive the tracks forward. To our ears "A Strangely Isolated Place" remains his strongest album and thanks to Schnauss' smart re-mastering work, it has never sounded better.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Ever the educators, Emotional Rescue are now turning their attention to the 90s "Afro-cosmic" scene - a sound that spread through Europe following the influence of Daniele Baldelli and his pioneering DJing in Italy in the late '70s. Munich's The New Morning were amongst the many crews inspired by what Baldelli was championing, and they created incredible, unusual dance music that easily stands up to modern standards for its inventive fusions of global influences and electronic technology. From the heady house throw down "In Japan" to the cosmic dancehall flex of "Jay's Rhama", there's so much to vibe off here, all of it highly compatible with the adventurous sounds creeping into DJ sets in the current era.

  5. Veena Via Video
Review: The 3rd part (of 4) collating the music of International Noise Orchestra, Marching In Time 3 again highlights the breath of music this mainly studio project presented between 1987 and 1991.

Starting with The Atlantic Swimmer, Richard Strange leads with his ubiquitous punk poet delivery across pure late 80s Balearics. Out on his own, sport or ambition, all atop strident guitar, one drop; funk drum and bass interplay.

The global music anthem Far Away is the first of 3 tracks by alias Internationales Gerauschorchester. Flowing like street soul remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as Rama Mani's vocals envelop and rise above the syncopation meets world love.

On the flip, the band shows their rock roots of Gimme More Lovin'. The vocal sees Strange in tandem with founders the Gemini Brothers behind the desk, as Ulrich on keys and Wolfgang on guitar let it all swing.

Finally, when you have a floating ensemble featuring master percussionists from the Indian sub-continent in Ramesh Shotham, R. A. Rajagopal, T. A. S. Man and T. N. Shashikumar then I Speak Your Body Electric with it's hazy, cosmic mid-tempo lure and the closing instrumental of eastern melodics of Veena Via Video, all ends in perfection.

  6. All Will Be Changed
Review: Emotional Rescue completes the reissues of International Noise Orchestra with a final 6 track EP celebrating this true multi cultural project that takes elements of Afro, Balearic, Dub, Indian, Jazz, Soul and a touch of Pop in a global fusion.

The switch between pop and heavy drum jamming is showcased on opener, as the band take Lennon & McCartney's Come Together and create a club meets Arabic mix. Pre-dating the post-Acid House "World Dance" years, Richard Strange returns with his unique delivery over a percussion meets rock guitar love in.

Returning to the band's earlier Internationales Gerauschorchester incarnation, the soft piano opening of Vit Quai Non from their 1983 debut, gives way to Wolgang's climbing solo acoustics alongside Joel Allouche's masterful tabla.

Savage Progress's Glynnis Thomas returns with her distinctive vocals over one-drop drumming for the encompassing title track, Marching In Time, before returning to their debut and the overlapping drum solos of Bum Bum Krach.

To close, the band revisit their signature shuffle, a now languid Groovin Up Slowly is delivered as some leftfield Japanese Gagaku solo. All Will Be Changed sees Richard Strange close with a fitting mantra to this 80s MIDI pop meets avant-garde artistry finale. Listen!!"

On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.

This third round of tripped-out dancefloor delights draws on a global panoply of sounds once again, starting in a mystical mood with "Kongo Bina" before firing up the party stove with "Roots & Culture" and slapping down a heavyweight chug on the fierce n' slow "Flatline". Review: Ulrich Schnauss' re-mastered reissue series continues with a fresh edition of 2007 set "Goodbye", an album that saw him incorporate guitars and vocals for the very first time. Of course, these aren't standard guitars, and the 12 tracks stretched out across the CD draw more influence from the Cocteau Twins and Seefeel than they do rock or indie-pop records. By combining these glistening guitar sounds with his usual gorgeous synthesizers, ambient chords and gentle electronic beats, Schnauss delivered an album that was notably different from its lauded predecessors while still remaining in the same sonic ballpark. While it received mixed reviews at the time, "Goodbye" remains a gorgeous and largely life-affirming set that's well worth further investigation (especially now it sounds better than ever due to some fine re-mastering work).

No Further Ahead Than Tomorrow (reissue)
Review: For the final part of his epic reissue series, Ulrich Schnauss has taken the chance to re-master and refresh 2016 set "No Further Ahead Than Today", which is now known as "No Further Ahead Than Tomorrow". As with its predecessors, the freshly polished set sounds gorgeous, with Schnauss adding extra sparkle to such positive and life-affirming downtempo gems as "Melts Into Air", the wall-of-sound shuffle of "The Magic In You", the undulating, morning-fresh ambient techno bliss of "New Day Starts At Dawn" and "Negative Sunrise", where Steve Reich style melodic refrains and Pat Metheny guitars vie for sound space alongside chiming melodies, crunchy beats and grandiose, enveloping synthesizer motifs. Even by Schnauss' standards, it's a big-sounding album, but that's certainly no bad thing.

Review: Ulrich Schnauss spent much of last year re-mastering his catalogue for re-release. On "A Long Way To Fall: Rebound", he's gone one step further, re-building, re-recording and reworking 2013 album "A Long Way To Fall" in order to finally get it sounding the way he's always wanted it to. It was always a fine album of course - a beautiful mix of sparkling, unusual instrumentation, bubbly electronic beats, grandiose themes and sumptious ambient soundscapes - but this 2020 edition sounds and flows even better than the original. This in part due to the crystal-clear clarity and surround sound style mixing, but also down to some of the subtle melodic and instrumental changes employed by Schnauss. If you're a fan, you need this in your life.

Review: Sam Eastgate might have made his name via Late of the Pier, but he proved solo abilities and then some with 'Inju', his own debut. He's now back with 'GENE', which sees him take individuality to greater heights by way of inventing, creating and playing his own unique instrument, which lends its name to the album. Throwing guitar licks, soft pads and compressed keys into the mix, the result is a psychedelic electronic explosion of colour and texture, along the lines of Neon Indian. Low slung glitch and piercing falsetto vocals build into a delicate but definite funk grooves, 'Open My Eyes' has an almost operatic quality to its chorus, underpinned with a techno-esque growling low end, and 'Rubber Sky' could almost be another David Byrne and X-Press 2 collaboration. Strutting, sparkling, rolling and crunching its way through three acts of innocence increasingly lost, this is electronic pop at its most impressive.

Review: Ju/Na is a collaborative project between Juri Corrado and Nathan Dawidowicz and was borne in Berlin where both of them live. It's a conjunction of free verse and analog soundscapes - which could be described as 'analog poetry'

This debut album 'Haiku' is an exploration of contemporary narcisism which unfolds against a backdrop of different facets of contemporary life in imaginary/imagined or concrete urban spaces. Each side of the record contains three tracks - reflecting the three phrases of Japanese Haiku poetry. With a surreal language and quotes from mythology, the opus potrays the dreamy delirium of the Ego, from Love to disenchantment.
