Can't Stop Dancin'
  1. Can't Stop Dancin'
  2. Can't Stop Dancin' (instrumental)
Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

Review: Shuya Okino is a DJ, club owner, writer and producer as well as being a part of the Kyoto Jazz Massive. He is a vital figure in the Japanese club scene and has been for over three decades now. He is involved in a wide range of projects from Cosmic Village to Root Soul to Mondo Grosso but his work with brother Yoshihiro as Kyoto Jazz Massive might be his best. This new album is another standout fusion of synth, broken beat and nu-jazz styles. Some of the tunes are pure dance floor heaters such as the prickly vibes of 'Get Up Featuring Roy Ayers' while others gaze off to a cosmic future such as the gorgeous synths of 'Visions Of Tomorrow.' Essential.

Review: The world has changed a lot since Junko Ohashi put out her 1984 compilation Magical. And never is that more clear than when looking at the album's front cover which depicts the twin towers still in situ in New York. Musically, though, the album is still on point for lovers of city pop, synth funk and 80s soul. It is one of the most recognised albums of the city pop genre with its sentimental chords, clean drum machine grooves and glowing synths all perfectly fitting in with the pure and innocent city pop aesthetic. The vocals are of course key tot hat - whatever Junko is singing about, she does it with the tones of an angel.

John Morales presents Teddy Pendergrass: The Voice: Remixed With Philly Love
Review: Teddy Pendergrass is one of soul's all time greats, and his voice practically defines the Philadelphia sound across too many hits to count. There might not be many stones left unturned in reflecting on this titan of Black American music, but venerated New York producer and remix pioneer John Morales is one of the few who was able to take Pendergrass' music to new heights in the disco era. This collection, carefully assembled through Morales' trusted collaborators at BBE, presents some all time classics as they should be heard, mixed to perfection by someone truly bedded into the music.

Review: This is a super limited 7" that has been pressed only 200 times on black vinyl. It finds Scottish production team Capitol 1212 serve up a super good reinterpretation of Joy Division's most iconic and enduring hit, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart.' The re-sung vocal comes in a rasta style thanks to the featured artists and acclaimed Studio One and Dreadzone singer Earl Sixteen. His devastating verses pair nicely with the deep dub beats and distance piano keys. The b-side features an exclusive dub versions that has never been heard before.

Gypsy Woman

  1. Gypsy Woman (2022 original)
  2. Gypsy Woman (DJ Koco remix)
Review: We don't know much about Cat Boys, other than that they're a Japanese trio that has delivered a string of surprising, jazz-funk flavoured cover versions over the last seven years. They first tackled Crystal Waters' house classic 'Gypsy Woman' with vocalist Asuka Ando back in 2018, delivering a lightly jazz-funk-flecked live organ-house take. On this brand-new 2022 version, they've dialled up the spacey jazz-funk synth solos and bongo-rich percussion, while also giving greater prominence to Ando's new Japanese lyrics. Over on the flip, DJ Koko reaches for some classic disco vocal samples on an organ-rich take that sticks closer to the 1990s organ-house vibe while utilising the band's organic instrumentation.

Review: Lemuria is one of the most admired funk bands to have come from Hawai'i. They were active in the late 70s and put out only one album and a couple of singles but they were so good that's enough for their legacy to endure. Their self-titled debut album from 1978 is a funk and soul fusion work imbued with plenty of sunshine and Hawaiian culture. The golden grooves are airy and musical with a quartet of vocalists laying down the super sweet vibes. It has been repressed a number of times but always sells out so don't sleep this latest chance.

Review: Makoto Matsushita's solo debut studio album landed on Air Records in 1981 and a year later got remastered and reissued on Moon Records. All of the ensuing CD copies used the second version which had remixed tracks and an English version of 'September Rain.' Now it has been remastered and reissued again, but this time it is the original 1981 version that we're treated to, albeit with the English version of 'September Rain' included as a bonus. It's a real high watermark for AOR, fusion and jazz-rock from the Japanese multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, lyricist and vocalist.

Magic Source do a great job of musical transportation here particularly with 'Genius of Love' which is a riff on the Tam Tam girls classic. Review: Kaoru Akimoto's Cologne is 1986 classic from Japan. Electronic funk and soul, textbook city-pop synth and ballad all define the 10 glorious tunes. There are camp upbeat bangers like the NRG disco pomp of 'Narcissist' with its acrobatic vocals, but also more deep cut and boogie tinged joints like 'Dress Down' which will light up any dance floor. There is real theatrical drama in the swopping strings and staccato bass of 'Nageki No Puzzle' epic rock licks on 'Love Letter' that veer towards cheese but never quite end up fully submerged in musical cheddar. Review: Lady Wray is one of the brightest talents in the field of neo-soul, and now she's back with her second album. There's something ultimately classic about her sound on this new record, tapping into the deep heritage of US soul as you might expect to hear from Gloria Ann Taylor or Minnie Ripperton, with bombastc songwriting and a gutsy, 70s-indebted production that sounds like honey in your ears. Throw in a tough boom-bap slant on the drums - not least on 'Games People Play' - which should have old-skool hip-hoppers nodding with approval, and you've got a new essential from the ever-strong Big Crown stable.

Review: Americans Hank Jacobs and Don Malone cooked up a bona fide political soul anthem when they crafted 'The World Needs Changin' back in 1970. It is now hard to find so naturally these days it fetches a very handsome fee on second hand markets so has rightly been reissued here by BGP. The a-side is a tune that cuts deep, with pained vocals over a simple but devastating soul rhythm. On the flip is another gem in the form of 'Getting On Down' making this a crucial cut.

Review: Sylvester has too many hits to count, but 'Over And Over' has to be up there. Originally released in 1977, the timeless slice of uptempo disco funk was a mighty meeting of minds - any track penned by Ashford & Simpson is set for iconic status, and with Sylvester up front it's even more of a sure thing. Quite simply eternal. Of course, Sylvester's most famous collaborator was Patrick Cowley, whose magic touch is all over the wriggling, brooding synth boogie of 'I Need Somebody To Love Tonight', presented here as a compact 7" edit for a short sharp blast of perfection.

Edits By Mr K: Prophecy
Cat: MXMRK 2044. Rel: 31 Jan 22
  1. Prophecy (edit By Mr K)
  2. I'm Just Being Myself (edit By Mr K)
Review: For this entry in the ever-expanding series from the master Danny Krivit, we turn to two productions from the legendary Lamont Dozier. Both songs are artfully rearranged by Mr. K and appear here on 12-inch vinyl for the first time. Margie Joseph was a powerful soul singer from the deep South who in her younger days was compared favorably to Aretha Franklin. But by the time of this recording in 1976, Joseph had moved on from the Southern soul sound and was looking for something new. She found it in collaboration with Lamont Dozier (who would actually go on to produce Aretha the following year). Dozier's song "Prophecy" was recorded at least three times, with Betty Everett doing it in '77 and Dozier himself using it as the title track for a planned 1975 solo album that was unfortunately never released. It's Margie Joseph's energetic version that made the song a proto-disco dance floor classic however, getting heavy spins on the U.K. modern soul scene and at the Houston St. incarnation of Nicky Siano's infamous 'Gallery'. "Prophecy" has also long been a Danny Krivit favorite, appearing on his 2001 compilation Grassroots. Mr. K turns in a new, definitive mix of the song, complete with a never heard before acapella intro and outro section. The writing on the wall says this one is still a winner! Going back just a couple years prior to "Prophecy" is our flip side, "I'm Just Being Myself." This time we have an even more high profile female singer who again was looking for a new sound. In the case of Dionne Warwick, she and her longtime collaborators Hal David and Burt Bacharach had split acrimoniously not long before, and her new label Warner Brothers, seeking a fresh twist for her voice, teamed her with the celebrated Holland-Dozier-Holland team. Lamont Dozier and the Holland brothers were of course responsible for numerous Motown smashes, but by the early '70s Berry Gordy had moved operations west to L.A. and H-D-H struck out on their own, choosing to remain in Detroit. "I'm Just Being Myself" was recorded at the team's studio there, with a cast of Motown veterans fleshing out the magnificent Holland-Dozier composition. Mr. K's edit squeezes the most out of the underlying groove, avoiding the chorus in favor of prominent percussion, dramatic strings, and soaring flute. Warwick herself doesn't make an entrance until five minutes into this epic rearrangement, cooly riding the building instrumental tension. A long-time standard in Krivit's bag, this edit makes its full length appearance on wax for the first time.

Review: This 7" reissue, thanks to Deep Soul Entertainment, sheds due light on a hip-hop collab that perhaps didn't see the praise it deserved back in the day. The New York native duo Skratch, aka. Big Ill and Al Skratch, this time taking on their individual names, scored their biggest hit in 1994 with 'I'll Take Her', a sexually-charged g-funk track arousing sultry thoughts of cruising around Harlem or Brooklyn, scouring the streets for the honies. For those less inclined towards the song's (perhaps questionable) lyrics, there's also a new dub mix on the B-side, allowing the enjoyably weighty instrumental to shine and breathe.

Review: Along with other reissues for The Ultimates, The Topics and Ricardo Marrero, P-VINE has been steadily reissuing the hard-to-find funk and soul gems on the short-lived 70s label TSG, and this latest reissue for Spice's 1976 record Let There Be Spice is of no exception and is packed with seasoned heat. It's a record that complements and blurs the lines of soul, funk and disco, and was once so rare that not even the band knew of its existence. Only in recent times have we been able to put together a picture of a group growing up in The Bronx with the burning desire to perform and light up the stage.

Review: Whether or not you can separate art from the artist is an enteral debate with no clear end point. Hiroshi Fujiwara & KUDO obviously think you can as they big on this selection of dubs of music by the sometime King of Pop. There are tunes from the early days with the Jackson 5 right through his solo years, all beefed up with dubby bottom ends, organ leads and wispy hi hats. Technically it is a fine piece of work that takes the source material in a whole new direction. These tracks sure sound good, but morally, well, it's up to you.

Review: To single out a release in catalogue of the 70s famed 'tax scam' label TSG is a hard ask the level of quality remained both consistently and inexplicably high during its two years of operation. Thus calling 1619 Bad Ass Band's 1976 self-titled album a stand-out release doesn't honour the spirit of the catalogue, and yet, by all accounts, everything about this monolithic funk and soul unit is striking.

Prices on the second-hand market for the original LP and 1978 Graham International reissue have priced out virtually everyone for decades. P-Vive is thrilled to be reissuing the album on vinyl fitted with an iconic Japanese obi strip.

Rhythm Of Life/Good Thing (7" limited to 400 copies)

Review: James Mason's 'Rhythm of Life' - one of the long overlooked but now celebrated musician's most popular cuts - has never appeared on a seven-inch single before, in part because its' six-minute length made it more suitable for 12" singles and LPs (it first appeared as the title track of Mason's 1977 debut album). Dynamite Cuts have decided to address this by preparing their own (fully licensed) seven-inch edit, which successfully chops down the high-octane, spiritually inspired jazz-funk gem without losing any of its energy or soul. This time round it comes backed by another classic cut from the Rhythm of Life LP, the more laidback, spacey synth solo-sporting jazz-funk warmth of 'Good Thing'.

Review: Mamiya Takako cut her teeth in late-'70s Japanese girl group Pao before striking out on her own with 1982 debut album Love Trip. Full of sweet, sugary, synth-laden pop songs that drew on then contemporaneous jazz-funk and soul sounds, the album sold relatively poorly at the time but is now considered something of a classic. It has been proceeded by a seven-inch single offering up two of the record's more sought-after cuts, but now this full album reissue offers the ultimate collector's piece. It's packed with undeniably loved-up gems, FM synth sounds, soft focus sax solos and bubbly jazz-funk bottom-ends.

Review: Vocalist and jazz and soul pianist Andy Bey worked with a range of celebrated talents such as Horace Silver and Gary Bartz but his debut solo album in 1974 takes some beating. It is an otherworldly offering of cosmic jazz and soul that is truly unique. The tone of Bey's voice always conveys a certain sense of pain, while the instrumentals around them range from deep and pensive to funky and playful. It is an album that takes a long time to parse and understand if you ever really do, and it has a superb cover, too. Do not sleep on this reissue.

Review: Tim Maia is one of Rio's most enduring soul-funk legends. Part of the reason for that is the vast amount of music he put out - there are something like 30 odd full-lengths in his back catalogue, many of them with very similar if not exactly identical names. His seventh album, the self-titled Tim Maia, was released 1976 and is one of his most popular. Original pressings have gone for huge sums in the past and it's no wonder as this is the sound of a man who was really getting into his groove and own singular sound.

Get Down Cause Ain't Funky (reissue)

Review: Theo Bijlhout is a Surinamese gospel singer from Paramaribo. It is there that he owns his own record shop in the centre of town and there where he recorded his small but well-formed discography in the late 1970s. This is one of the standout tunes from it and was his first-ever release in 1977. A good quality original copy is hard to find and relatively pricey but this reissue helps you out there. 'Get Down Cause Ain't Funky' is the real gem with its afro drumming, smooth grooves and lively vocals next to the big horns. 'It's Gonna Be Different Now' is a slower, more sentimental sound with a tender vocal and deeper sense of remorse.

Review: Standby for a monster rhythm & blues tune here, and one that transports you to another world courtesy of Diane Ward and Kevin Finigier's sublime collaboration. Ward is an American singer who came up singing gospel in church, which is not a surprise when you hear her raw and visceral delivery here. She spent time living in Argentina which is where she saw Kevin perform and insisted they work together. 'Why Don't You Go Hom' is dripping with emotion, attitude and empowering sounds. On the flip side is 'Cocktail De Medianoche,' a busy mix of bongo, flute, boogaloo sounds, Northern Soul grooves and Latin flair.

Review: Adam Gibbons produced this mini-masterpiece in his own home in 2007. It was a stunning debut that melded funk, jazz, samples, breaks and beats into a lovable and danceable collection packed with heat. At the time, the producer was working for Sky TV in London and after a long 12-hour shift would sketch out ideas on the train home then finish them off in his bedroom studio. It took about eight months of doing that to finish the record and we're glad he did: it is a well-crafted work with nods to vintage funk, storytelling samples and real soul that bristles and busters with charm from front to back.

Review: John Fitch & Associates were a one-shot curio from the tail end of the 60s who, on the strength of this record, should have ridden their wave of heavy, funky blues long into the 70s. What they did on their sole single was as strong as any of the more established and successful groups of the era, but of course the dusty archives of music history are littered with such mysteries and near-misses. Either way it's a treat to see this one get a fresh pressing, with the laid back but beautifully overdriven soul of 'Romantic Attitude' facing off with the hopped-up fuzz of 'Stoned Out Of It'.

Review: Who knew an entertainment career spanning the likes of comic sci-fi series like Red Dwarf and kitsch game shows vis-a-vis Robot Wars could result in a side stint curating soul compilations? Well, it's exactly what happened to Craig Charles, who also happens to have been manning BBC6 Music's soul and funk corner for almost 20 years now, not to mention regularly touring the world as a DJ. This isn't his first 'Trunk of Funk'. The first was overwhelmingly well-received by a "funk hungry public", and now, our national treasure Craigy-boy has ensured said public doesn't starve a second time round. Backboned by Charles' introductory yells to imaginary screaming crowds - "are you ready!?" - we cycle through funk bits both old and new, exclusive and widely-available, from Cha Wa to Luther Ingram to Joel Culpepper. Craig says: "Give your ears and feet enough mellifluous musical fodder to last you until Volume 3 - Awooga!"

  1. Step On
  2. Meanwhile On The 15th Floor
Review: Original Gravity label maestro Neil Anderson loves to cover a broad array of sounds and has recently turned his hand to tunes by Oasis and Stereophonics. He here focusses on Madchester legends Happy Mondays and their superb 'Step On' under his Junior Dell & The D-Lites alias, while a Jamaican singer provides backing. It still has all the melon-twisting magic of the original but with some hefty reggae rhythms down low. On the reverse is 'Meanwhile On The 15th Floor' which is a fat-bottomed reggae instrumental original that rides on a nice 60s Kingston rocksteady vibe with a twelve-bar blues melody.

  1. K15, Lex Amor & Karun - "Hold On"
  2. Sola & Labdi - "Nanae"
Review: American music obsessive and archivist Jerome Derradji's Past Due Records label has got a fine compilation on its hands here. It gathers upside of the very best sounds that San Antonio-based funk band Horizon ever put out. They had a hardcore and devoted local following in the early 89s and secured a number of big radio hits. They were all released on 7"s that you will struggle to ever track down. Thankfully, each one gets assembled here across four fantastic sides of vinyl. What's more, no fewer than ten previously unreleased tracks also make the cut. These are authentic lo-fi funk gems with powerful rhythm sections and seductive vocal sounds.

Got To Be Something Here

Review: The Lewis Connection was a Soul / Funk band from Minneapolis who may have looked like your average local band save for one exception - the guest member addition of Prince. These tracks are lifted from the self-titled album and "Got To Be Something Here" with Prince on background vocals and guitar marks the first time he appeared on a release by another artist on a track he did not write. In addition, it's also considered an early record of what would become the signature Minneapolis funk sound. This fine historically rich tune will be available in 45 rpm format for the first time.

Bless My Soul
  1. Bless My Soul
  2. Souvenir
Review: Shawn Lee and his Angels of Libra bring that sweet, blue-eyed soulful sound to Legere Recordings with a heart-warming 7" single to keep you cosy through the winter months. 'Bless My Soul' has a subtly dubby tone in the rhythm section, but as it hits its stride it becomes something more like a Curtis Mayfield-style Motown joint that'll put a spring in your step, no doubt about it. 'Souvenir' is no slouch either, packed full of resplendent brass and breezy Rhodes played with the smoothest of touches.
