Inside EP (12")
Cat: TEC 105. Rel: 06 Feb 19
  1. Bullet 2 (4:44)
  2. Inside (5:11)
  3. More Cowbell (4:56)
  4. Gunshot Clap (5:01)
Review: Busting open a brand new bottle of 2019 with his bare Mancunian hands, Walton returns to Pinch's Tectonic with his first fresh dispatch since his sophomore album Black Lotus. As always, it's a full-bodied assault as "Bullet 2" licks shots with technoid venom. "Inside" follows with a similar spirit but with even less layers of armour and a bouncier bassline, while "More Cowbell" does that toxic Pulse X style alien bass thing, gets all trippy with the percussion and seriously stampy with the kicks. Finally, we close with a bruked up G swagger on the spacious, foreboding "Gunshot Clap". Shots fired.

  1. Gravity (5:03)
  2. First Kind (4:44)
Review: Kromie the homie brings the heat we've been hoping for since he previewed it in 2013; the sizzling, screaming, 1.21 gigawatt voltage bassline monster "Gravity". Every bit as heavy as its name suggests, it's Kromestar at his most venomous (and arguably very best). Flip for his ever satisfying game of contrast as "First Kind" switches to Ricky's equally satisfying deep side. All smouldering subs and cavernous space. An absolutely outstanding piece of 140 wax right here, Isaac Newton ya dun know!

The Redders EP
The Redders EP (red vinyl 12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: CRITSYS 005. Rel: 15 Jul 16
  1. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "No Go" (3:14)
  2. Redders & Gorgon Sound - "96 In One" (4:20)
  3. Redders & Sam Binga - "Dem Ones" (2:15)
  4. Redders & Moresounds - "Sexy Or Sweet" (2:43)
  5. Ruffhouse & Clarity - "Aphasia" (Redders & Sam Binga remix) (4:47)
  6. Redders & Sam Binga & Hyroglifics - "Vintage" (feat MC DRS) (4:50)
Review: MC-focused EPs aren't particularly common in D&B. They're even less common on Critical. In fact this is the first. And it's a delight from the off as Redders teams up with mates old and new for a body of work that's more album than EP. "No Go" is all space-funk oddness with barely a bar in sight, "96 In One" is rapid fire storytelling over a dancehall version, "Dem Ones" is Redders' take on a dry-humping love song while "Sexy Or Sweet" sits somewhere between Toddla T and Barry White. Winding up "Aphasia" sees Redders and Sam flip Ruffhouse's dark tribal stamps into a carnival killer and "Vintage" sees the Bristol-based MC go toe-to-toe with the best MC in the game. One of a kind.

Dust March
Dust March (12")
Cat: HES 021. Rel: 19 Jun 12
  1. Dust March
  2. Rise 'Em
  3. Metzger
  4. Dog Sweater
Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

  1. Freakshow (feat Danny Brown & Kiki Hitomi)
  2. Louder (feat Flowdan)
  3. Dirty (feat Flowdan)
  4. Kill Them (feat Daddy Freddy)
Review: Dropping a searing double pack of 10" badness ahead of the forthcoming Angels & Devils album, The Bug is back in business with some apocalyptic gutter bass of the highest order. "Freakshow" matches the leering delivery of Danny Brown with the sinister croon of King Midas Sound's Kiki Hitomi over a horn-laden trap swagger to devastating effect. "Louder" pits Flowdan in the depths of a nauseating half-step march, while "Dirty" takes the London MC into a barrage of equally nerve-jangling drum rattles and alarm-clanging stabs. Long-time Bug collaborator Daddy Freddy rolls up his sleeves for "Kill Them", anchoring the dread stomp with a fearsome growl as anthemic as it is nihilistic.

  4. Iceman (instrumental) (3:28)
Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Review: Brentford's finest pirate radio crew turned BBC sitcom stars have finally made it onto CD. For those familiar with the ebb and flow of their acclaimed People Just Do Nothing series, The Lost Tape is something of a treat. Presented as a non-step Korupt FM broadcast complete with Chabuddy G intro, skewed Steves mixing and rhymes from Grindah and DJ Beats, it's a memorable romp through the history of British garage and grime with a few exclusives and never-before-heard tracks thrown in. Stylistically, it's eerily reminiscent of many pirate radio mixtapes from back-in-the-day - which, of course, is the idea - but with the added bonus of laugh-out-loud moments amongst the scene anthems from Sunship, Wookie, DJ Zinc, Youngstar, Wiley, Dizzee and the boys themselves.

Review: Rustie's long-awaited follow-up to Glass Swords has landed. And it's every bit as beautiful as you'd expect. Delivered with more narrative consistency than his first, it's the sound of a producer who's found his palette and knows how to create the most perfect colours. Ranging from the somnambulant euphoria of "Paradise Stone" to the rainbow grime of the D Double E-fronted "Up Down" via the concentrated over-layered guitar psychedelia of "Tempest", and complete with cameos from the likes of Danny Brown, Redinho and Gorgeous Children, Rustie has created the consummate sophomore that goes way beyond any expectations.

Review: The techno deity that is Anthony Child, aka Surgeon, compiles the 53rd instalment of the vaulted fabric mix series and my, isn't it something. Fusing tough, raw techno and dubstep, Child takes us on a relentless journey that unites the work of Scuba, Ital Tek and Instra:mental with Mark Broom, James Ruskin and a healthy slew of his own productions. The pounding, bone shattering drop into the Al Tourettes & Appleblim remix of Planetary Assault Systems "X Speaks To X" sums up what Surgeon is all about on this mix - the interbreeding of two genres into one serious workout. Indeed, his chosen moniker has never appeared so apt, cutting and slicing seemingly disparate beats into one flowing narrative. This mix is easily as essential as any of its predecessors, and that's saying something.

  28. Kode9 & The Spaceape - "Ghost Town"
Review: The 90th installment of the long-running FabricLive series comes from Kahn & Neek, AKA Young Echno members Joe McGann and Sam Barrett. The 28-track mix-up is naturally heavy on material from friends and collaborators (Jabu, Pinch, Ishan Sound, Gemmy etc.), plus a swathe of their own productions and remixes. It offers a whirlwind tour of the Bristol duo's influences and inspirations, taking in paranoid, dubbed-out ambience, stoned trip-hop, sub-bothering grime, post-dubstep intensity, hard-to-define madness (Gantz's brilliant "Temple Meads"), dancefloor-burning ragga revisions, and mutant, wide-eyed post-R&B (the fantastic "Dial Ton" by VMOS and Boofy). In other words, it perfectly encapsulates the duo's club-rocking DJ sets, not to mention where Bristol's bass scene is right now.

Review: Since donning the SBTRKT mask, one time broken beat producer Aaron Jerome has become far more famous for the booming intensity and restless rhythms of his productions than the sweet soul he was previously most famous for. It's something of a pleasant surprise, then, to see Jerome returning to his musical roots on this SBTRKT debut LP. While the trademark shuffling dubstep rhythms, future garage grooves and hurried broken beats remain, they're underpinned by a thick vein of sassy soulfulness - thanks in no small part to the fragile vocals of Sampha - and an overriding atmosphere of melodic beauty. It's a wise move on Jerome's part, because SBTRKT is a far better album than many would have expected; in fact, it's a bit of a belter.

  1. Landscapes (feat Simbad)
  2. It's Serious (feat Karizma)
Review: The promise of Cooly G's releases for Hyperdub et al turns into maddening anticipation as the first taste of her forthcoming album sneaks out months ahead of the game! First up it's "Landscapes", co-produced with Simbad, and utterly devastating in its use of simple elements for maximum effect. A broken beat ticks steadily away under glossy, undulating streams of pads while Cooly herself enchants with her Neneh Cherry style vocal delivery. "It's Serious" on the flipside sees Cooly linking up with certified house legend Karizma for a more chunky, beat-driven offering that will slay floors in the same way that Altered Natives' "Rass Out" did some years back.

Review: Both an intriguing and very cool release on Hyperdub, Philly producer King Britt surfaces after a long absence with this new project that goes beyond his traditionally lush and funky nu-jazz and broken beat releases into a darker and chillier place. The Gary Numan-meets-Prince spank of "Chasing Rainbows" is a great starter, while the off-the-wall drum programming of "The Chase" and the filmic swathe of "Lilloo's Seduction" show a breadth of talent that can only come from being in the game for 15 years plus.

Darkstar in 2010 are an upgraded model of the Darkstar which released the much loved single 'Aidy's Girl Is A Computer' at the end of 2009. That song, and previous singles 'Need You' and 'Squeeze My Lime' hinted at a nascent songwriting talent and mastery of oozing synth drones that has burst into life on their debut album, 'North'. The band have adjusted their focus, adding lead singer James Buttery to the production and writing team of James Young and Aiden Whalley, and the result as heard on 'North' is a brave, low-key pop masterpiece, which discards the cheap thrills and treadmill ideas that many deploy to access success. Instead, 'North' will creep up on you with each listen, seducing with its' achingly gorgeous, synthesized songwriting. From the intro track 'In The Wings', right through to the closing song, a lush new version of 'Squeeze My Lime' now called 'When It's Gone', the album blends their crunchy, citric synths, baroque strings, piano and tender guitar with vocal harmonies, gently laced with glitches and noise. Here, Darkstar have subtly found the beauty in distortion. The first single from the album, the catchy 'Gold', is a cover of a little known Human League song 'You Remind Me Of Gold', inspired by hearing the original slowed to 33rpm. Insectoid drum machine rhythms carry the song along accompanied by a chilly piano. 'Deadness', 'Dear Heartbeat', 'Two Chords' and 'North' impress with their icy radiance, the rich, wafting strings, dreamy guitar and keys bury the otherwise snowy-white sonics, the crunch of the drums and the translucent vocals sounding as if they're sung by a hologram. Some tracks, like 'Ostkreuz' and aspects of 'Under One Roof' conjure up a soundtrack to Twin Peaks if it was set in the North of England. Mini-anthem of 2009, 'Aidy's Girl Is A Computer' also earns a slot among the new material. With their first long player, Darkstar have produced an album many bands with far more experience and many more releases and under their belt can only dream of. Downbeat, breezy, sometimes melancholy, sometimes just plain sad, at others optimistic and affirming, and always gracefully elegant, 'North' will surprise many, a classic record for short days and long nights.

Review: Zomby returns to Hyperdub with his first album in three years, trailed in high profile fashion by that Burial collaboration "Sweetz." That particular tune is one of Ultra's headline attractions, alongside eyebrow-raising collaborations with Darkstar, Banshee and Rezzett. What really impresses, though, is the skewed, left-of-centre nature of the mask-wearing producer's heavy, post-grime rhythms, sparse but sparkling synth work, and the breathlessly cut-up R&B vocals dotted throughout the set. Interestingly, there are subtle nods towards new wave synth-pop, ghetto-tech, spacey ambient and alien IDM, making Ultra Zomby's most intriguing and consistently on-point album to date.

MMM & Old Apparatus Meet Tshetsha Boys & Shangaan Electro
  1. MMM - "MMM Meets Tshetsha Boys" (7:08)
  2. Old Apparatus - "Old Apparatus Meets Shangaan Electro" (4:00)
Review: Honest Jon's present the last twelve inch instalment of their impossibly varied Shangaan Shake remix project with the perma excellent MMM and Old Apparatus at the helm. Fiedel and Wiegand's take on the Tshetsha Boys is notable for two things: firstly it continues the duo's recent fascination with rhythms of a decidedly UK Funky nature (as executed with devastating effect on their recent Dex/Rio 12") and it further strengthens the impression Honest Jon's have given the commissioned artists a blank canvas to retain or toss as many elements of the source material as they deem fit. Thus recognisable snippets of the vocals remain alongside a brilliantly twisted treatment of the tinny melodics wrapped infinitely around butt slapping drum textures. Completely different in tone and execution, the elusive Old Apparatus invoke the spirit of Scratch Perry at his most intoxicatingly brilliant with a rusted, half stepping arrangement caked in all manner of feedback which serves to demonstrate how far reaching the project has been over the course of the 12" releases.

Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.

Review: Two massive Pinch classics taken on by the mighty Kromestar; need we say more? Pinch's 2010 speaker shredder "The Boxer" gets an absolute fouling with epic distortion on the bass and swaggering drums. It's so heavy it's been on dub for at least two years. Flip for Kromestar's take on Pinch's 2011 Deep Medi murker "Swish" as it's given a bullet proof suit of armour ready for any militant war scenario. Both absolutely destroy the dance.

Don't expect many big sing-alongs, don't come crying for big pop cameos, Dizzee has returned to his outpost in 'da corner' and honed some of the most provocative tracks of his career. Highlights include the orchestral theatrics of "I Ain't Gonna Lie", the flute-snapping "Ghost" and the pure venom of "Sick A Dis". The futuristic, bass-heavy beats carved by the likes of Valentino Khan, Cardo and Paul Salva ensure Dizzee rides in style.

Review: Flying Lotus' expanding Brainfeeder imprint takes a big step and expands its crew beyond the Los Angeles area that is proving such a fertile ground for leftfield beats. Illinois-based producer Lorn's debut album Nothing Else is littered with hip-hop inspired beats and heavily atmospheric, exploring the murky side of electronica whilst never straying too far into heavily experimental tones. Broody at times, Nothing Else explores a wide range of moods and showcases this 23-year-old's production prowess - top picks include the rolling crunch of "Bretagne" and the ominous growl of "Tomorrow".

Rough funk, distorted and tailored strictly to kick the living peanuts out of the crowd, each cut is Distance doing what he does best.
