Review: Long-time turntablist, erstwhile Christine band member and recent 45 Live crew member, North French Aeon Seven delivers his first ever 45. A loose-swinging, wah wah-rattling, organ-blasting feel good b-boy bomb with all the cheeky chops and cuts you'd expect from a deck wizard of his calibre, "Seven Breaks" is primed for party and battling devastation. Complete with a creative DJ acapella scratch cut, this 45 is alive.

  4. 22:22 (5:54)
Review: Italy's Andrea is now a trusted member of the Ilian Tape collective, having only released for the German label thus far. But, why would he go elsewhere? These guys are on fire, and releasing some of the most interesting shades of industrial 4/4 these days. This is his fourth EP for the throng, and "Floating" starts off with a beatless, wide-eyed landscape of soft pads to introduce the twisted, shifting, break-driven tech of "Timed". "Queue A", on the flip of the disc, is a driving pile of rusty kick drums and oceanic pads that head into the deeper end of the techno sphere, while "22:22" goes all-out on the jungle patterns with its broken groove that recalls the likes of LTJ Bukem or Dego at their more pacy moods. A killer of an EP!

Review: Robin Ball has been on a roll of late, flaunting his wares on the Memory Box label amongst others. He makes a second outing on Groovepressure with four tracks of dynamic, inventive machine jams touching on synthwave influences and a healthy dose of electro. There's atmosphere loaded into each of these forthright, roughly hewn workouts, not least on the eerie, trancey synth strings on "Mr Mumble". The B side features the steadiest material in the shape of two versions of "Satin" that tap into the housier end of Ball's output.

Review: Emerging German funksters CMC & Silenta bag themselves a team of iron-lipped vocalists for their most accomplished single to date. Both "The Night Is Mine" and "Big Up Booty" bounce with a distinct Freestylers or Deekline & Solo twang - unashamed big room beats coated in chants and sing-along potential. The remixes aren't too shabby either: DJ AKA chunks and chops it while Funkanomics flops his slap bass out. Serious party starters.

  4. Push (feat Tanaya Harper) (5:51)
Review: Irish tape throb enthusiast The Cyclist adds Bristol house bastions Hypercolour to his discography with this fine four-track 12", Pressing Matters, which features a remix from Pampa and Kompakt legend Robag Wruhme! The title track is a fine example of The Cyclist's warped charm, conjuring bendy bass lines, faltering breakbeats and wavy synth lines over seven delightfully heat-treated minutes. The Robag Wruhme is just as epic, sounding like a lost breakbeat artefact dug up for gleeful 21st century consumption. "Born In '92" adds plenty of pirate radio chatter into it's deep and spectral house bump, whilst Tanaya Harper's vocals lend a palpable edge to the brittle garage swing of closer "Push."

  1. High Hill (7:36)
  2. The Spirit (7:24)
Review: Elusive producer Disk has been busy of late, delivering two low-key - but also highly regarded - EPs in the last few months. This latest 12", which also appears via his Whiteloops imprint, boasts another two tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. First up is "High Hill", a bustling chunk of rolling dancefloor voodoo built around chunky deep house drums, flash-fried samples and fluttering tech-house flourishes. He takes a totally different approach on the B-side, paying tribute to the dreamy chords, loved-up breadowns and skittering breakbeats of early British hardcore productions. It sounds like 808 State's "Pacific" was a major influence, though the breaks on Disk's production boast a much funkier swagger.

Review: Dr Rubberfunk: what he lacks in legit medical credentials, he makes up for in absolute funk plaudits. Tongue-in-cheek, clever and sprung with a groove so slinky you might just lose your trousers, "Disco Scene" marks its 16th anniversary since its debut in 2001 with this updated edit on a cheeky blink-and-miss 45. Backed up with the equally bubblesome (if a little heavier) Breaks Of Wrath blend, this stands the test of time impeccably.

Review: Four furiously funky floor-busters from Aussie nu-funkateer Tom Drummond, each of these well-executed hip-hop-minded bootlegs guarantees a raucous reaction. "Thick Shake" takes the Nate Dogg vocals from Eminem's "Shake That" and fuses them with classic Zapp & Rogers funk flavour while "Work It" takes UNK's "Walk It Out" and introduces it to a bouncy soft-skank riddim with horns galore. Elsewhere we find Marlena Shaw getting a big beat style facelift on "Ghetto Blaster" while "Satisfaction" smelts Benny Benassi with Rolling Stones and plenty more.

Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

Review: Canadian techno expert Ryan James Ford appeared seemingly out of nowhere with a debut release on powerhouse MDR back in 2015. Since then, the Berlin based artist has released a genre defying album for Answer Code Request ,as well as launching his Shut imprint: devoted entirely to his own productions. Like its title may suggest: Discipline 78-96 could well refer to his musical education back in his old hometown of Calgary, and these retro leaning techno cuts definitely allude to it too. A side cut "Deer Run" is a functional big room techno cut that wouldn't have sounded out of place on F Comms back in the day, while the epic pitched-down rave monster "Beltine" or modern junglist reinterpretation "Ken's Defekt" would make even Shed and Special Request stand up and notice.

UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

Review: True Toronto history; Strobe's first ever release from the decorated bossman Ron Allen and psyentific lab partner Hayden Andre. All versions are present in their 1991 glory; Hayden's bleep funk tech and Ron's housier takes on "Metamorphosis", the sci-fi synth feels and finger clicking funk of "Spectre" take over the B while two era-defining takes on "Falling From The Light" and cascading acid house classicality of "Calibrate This" hold up on the b. Dark, Detroitian and devilishly simple, this still sounds future after 26 years...

  2. Sweetness & Light (For Life remix) (4:48)
Review: In what might be something of an unexpected reissue move, early rave belter "Sweetness & Light" from Australian duo Itch-E & Scratch-E gets a fresh airing for the 21st century no less than 25 years after it first landed in a hailstorm of bright melodic lines and raucous tempo. In its original form "Sweetness & Light" is everything you could possibly want from an early trance stormer, all plush layers of harmony reaching an emotional crescendo over an irrepressibly bouncy beat. The "For Life" remix meanwhile flips the script with a blissed out, chord-heavy version that slows the pace right down, possibly for the original fans of the tune who need things a little slower now.

  4. U-202 - "Whistler (Edit X)" (3:41)
Review: "Rends L'argent" ("give the money back") became the Clarion call of anti-corruption protesters during the 2017 French general election campaign. It would be slightly misleading to say that this split 12" from the consistent Brothers From Different Mothers is a politically-charged affair, but there's certainly anger to be detected amongst the four fantastic tracks on show. Check, for example, the long and foreboding build-up, poignant electronics and booming hardcore/jungle revivalism of J-Zbel's opener "Nik Molina" and similarly inclined "Selecta". Or, for that matter, the disenchantment fuelling Low Jack's "Ice Formula Riddim", where melancholic chords wrap around tumbling melody lines and occasional bouts of post-dancehall drums. As for U-202's bleak and distrorted techno closer, "Whistler (Edit X)", it feels like the producer has already lost all hope.

Review: Strange happenings are going on down at Scrutton Street, EC1. With release after release
cementing the names of those based or working out of the studio bunker, a desire for
pushing the boundaries of electronic music is primary with little concern for what's hip.
So if anyone can Tim can and here with his newly birthed pseudonym comes Junior Fairplay.
With a one-sided release and remix to his name on Crimes Of The Future a glimpse has been
offered of what's in store, but How Do You Like Me Now? gives it straight.
Pioneering and back to the British techno of early Black Dog, Reload, Stasis and of course,
the seminal "Selected Works" clearly inspires, but so too does one of those musical moments
where genres clash, tear and stretch as something new is being born.
It all starts with the uplifting House anthem of Classic Version, eschewing the oft-tasted
horror stylings and aims direct for that 4am MDMA airfild rush, before the EP drops, locks
and spins on it's axis, with 3 pure breaks cuts to overload the senses and say, now is the time!
A voyage to another side to the mythical lost chord via a moment in time where open filds,
abandoned warehouses, the kick of 4/4 house, hip hop breaks and the dub of sound system
culture merged but for a short while. Not house, not rave or jungle. A proto sound born of
blood, sweat and Rage.
