Review: Credo boss Alex Bau returns with some deep dub techno excursions on the fittingly titled Echo Echo imprint - a new Echocord sublabel. With previous releases on top labels like CLR, Kombination Research and Cocoon - you can trust this veteran A.M. specialist. From the glacial and cavernous "Clouds" and the introspective dub of "Contour" nailing that Basic Channel vibe of old. On the flip, we get two versions of "Zenstory". The first (prelude) being a chilling ambient version while the second is a stripped back epic that builds full of tension and suspense throughout.

Oba Enka (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MNQ 124. Rel: 06 Sep 18
  1. DEF (7:39)
  2. Ham (9:07)
  3. Oba Enka (7:20)
Review: Given he's previously released some seriously creepy, atmospheric techno on Berceuse Heroique and Pinkman, you'd expect Black Merlin's Mannequin Records debut to be similarly unsettling. That's certainly the case with A-side "DEF", a hypnotic and feverish affair where raw and restless, industrial-inspired riffs rise above paranoid, held-note chords and a locked-in drum track. You'll find more brain-melting, razor-sharp modular motifs on the arguably even more intense and wayward "Oba Enka", while closer "Ham" wraps undulating, acid-style electronic motifs around an altogether fuzzier, looser groove. It sounds like it would be capable of inducing vivid hallucinations in early morning dancers, which in our book is no bad thing.

  1. Abuse Your Freedom (6:21)
  2. Weak People (6:42)
  3. Live In Fear Of Conflict (6:08)
  4. Denial Will Prevail (6:34)
Review: Joey Blush's releases under the Blush Response alias are getting increasingly dystopian. Abuse Your Freedom, his latest missive for longtime home Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, contains a quartet of tracks that wouldn't sound out of place sound-tracking the end of civilization. Check, for example, the thumping techno drums, restless acid lines, foreboding spoken word vocals and punchy EBM percussion hits of "Abuse Your Freedom", the fizzing lo-fi gloom of "Weak People" and the funk-fuelled Nitzer Ebb intensity of "Live in Fear of Conflict", which is so stylistically accurate that you half expect it to come with a shouty vocal from Douglas McCarthy. The excellent "Denial Will Prevail" inhibits similar sonic territory, albeit in a wilder and heavier vein.

  1. Forewarned Is Forearmed (6:07)
  2. Common Ancestor (6:45)
  3. Doublethink (6:51)
  4. Atlas (6:28)
Review: Romanian producer Borusiade finally hits Ostgut Ton's Unterton sub-label, placing the artist on a clear platform on which to showcase his devious blend of techno sounds to a less minimally-minded dance crowd. This is tough dance-floor material that should be churned out at peak time. His strain of industrialism is loud and audible on "Forewarned Is Forearmed", a steely, broken techno rhythm that gathers more and more pace as its deathly sonics cave in, while "Common Ancestor" pounces on fluidly without the help of any kick drums. "Doublethink" is an ode to 1984 dystopia, a wide soundscape of liquid drums and eerie melodies swirling over head, leaving "Atlas" to ponder in a dark, intricate whirlpool of sludgy melodies and broken percussion shots. Techno-approved and fully recommended.

Review: Cold Beat is a San Francisco-based quartet fronted by Hannah Lew (synths, vocals) with Kyle King (synths, guitar), Luciano Talpini Aita (synths) and Sean Monaghan (guitar). Formed in 2013 the band has released three albums and two EPs. 'A Simple Reflection' is a 7-song collection of Eurythmics covers, yet feels just as personal as any of their original material. While digging through a collection of 12?s for her record shop Contact Records, Lew stumbled across the earliest Eurythmics B-sides and was floored. This lead to the discovery of their debut album 'In The Garden'. Annie Lennox's abstract and poetic lyrics really struck a chord with Hannah. What had started out as a single cover quickly snowballed into a full blown obsession. The synth and drum programming resonated with her songwriting process, so reimagining them was very creatively fulfilling. The covers on this EP are simultaneously dynamic and atmospheric post-punk that plays to Lew's ethereal vocals and King's crystalline guitar. All songs have been mixed by Mikey Young (Total Control) and mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. The record is housed in a jacket designed by Eloise Leigh, which features pink and purple clouds that evoke a dreamy softness and DIY playfulness and photos Lew in her best Lennox-inspired drag. Each copy includes a postcard with photos and notes. "Sometimes a song seems to sing just for you, as if someone knows your most inner thoughts and feelings and has found a way to describe them effortlessly" - Hannah Lew

The A side features the spooky mood lighting of "Eyes On Ceiling" awash in sombre and celestial FM synth tones, while on the flip we have smooth saxophone-led ambient of "Husk". This fine record follows up releases by the pair on Vancouver's Total Stasis and The Hague's Wichelroede (R.I.P.)

Review: More seductive electro-noir from New Yorker in Berlin Luca Venezia aka Curses, on Jennifer Cardini and Noura Labbani's Dischi Autunno. Offering up some lo-slung punk-funk (with some sultry German vocals) on the lovely "Gold & Silber" here, which also receives a series of terrific reworks. Italian underground hero Fango's remix delivers his twisted take on the track, while not deviating too much from its original format. The Live At Robert Johnson affiliated Chinaski delivers two trademark neon-lit perspectives - the dark romanticism of the Painkiller bonus mix and the sexy Tech Noir remix going for more of an electro-pop vibe. Finally on the flip, we have Giallo Disco's Antoni Maiovvi with a majestic Italo derived reduction.

  1. Club Version (6:44)
  2. Jettison II (6:50)
  3. NUN-1 (4:13)
Review: After the success of his latest album, Inna Babalon, and the first BTEC Version EP, we are pleased to see the second installment of the latter drop on our shelves so quickly. What is special about John T Gast's music, apart from its creativity and an uncanny ability to avoid categorization, is that it sounds so damn relevant today. In a social sphere that's constantly preoccupied with elements of dystopia, the producer's music alleviates some of those tensions by making them a physical reality. The opening "Club Version" is, on first appearance, a placid house tune, but it quickly transforms into its own style of sci-fi thanks to all sort sof subtle sonic infusions at the periphery of the leading sounds. On the flipside, "Jettison II" heads into a spiral of hypnotics thanks to the track's circular use of sounds and what seem to be helicopter recordings, whereas "NUN-1" portrays its own sort of mysticism with shattered percussion and an inherent feeling of gloom and doom... which we are totally bought into. Sick.

Review: Grim Lusk is a brand new alias of producer and experimentalist Murray Collier, who first came to our attention as one half of Optimo Music act Pussy Mothers. As you'd perhaps expect, this debut mini-album is devilishly difficult to pin down, with Collier fusing elements borrowed from a myriad of styles - dub, industrial funk, ambient, instrumental hip-hop, dark post-punk disco, experimental electronica and lo-fi techno included - to create entertaining and ear-pleasing workouts overflowing with interesting ideas. At times, the resultant cuts sound a little like Golden Teacher after a few too many sherberts, at others L.I.E.S style cuts peppered with inspired instrumentation. Throughout, you get the impression that Collier could be a name to watch in the months and years ahead.

Review: Female duo Group A return to our charts after that wicked 12" for Mannequin, and this time it's courtesy of one of our favourite boutique labels, the unstoppable Kashual Plastik, from the heart of Berlin's Kottbusser Tor. Much like the rest of their material, and much like the rest of the label's catalogue, this is taking wacky electronics to their very limits, tearing them down and rebuilding them with a distinctive air of industrial know-how. In fact, this is bold-faced techno, built and shaped by a plethora of instruments that goe way beyond the normal confines of a standard studio. You can hear Group A in each one of these tracks; they are like representations of themselves. We love it. TIP!!!

Review: LA Club Resource's Innsyter helps carry Contort Yourself into this new realm of dedicated solo releases from contemporary artists (their previous form was to split releases between archival and new tracks). The snarling, industrial palette is much the same, and the years of origin are as ambiguous here as they've ever been on the label, making Innsyter the perfect addition to the catalogue. From acid-dipped synth pop to nightmarish wave contortions, this record is certainly not for the faint of heart, but if you already love the dark and deadly world of Contort Yourself then this brilliantly-realised, consistently inventive record can't fail to hit the spot.

Review: The Berlin-based artist occasionally known as Opal Sunn makes his debut on Utopia with this alluring six track EP. Laced with a touching, restrained and emotional feel throughout "Olson Waters" sets the tone with its beatless framework and gently cascading arrangements while "Hidden Tropics" adds a little momentum with soft rolling beats, drifting pipes and rising chords that sound reminiscent of Reduction era Art Of Noise. "Bells Of Ukyo", "Birds Of Bahia" and "Quiet Dawn" build on the ambient thread with Foly sound and deep meditative textures while a beatless take on "Hidden Tropics" closes the show with poignancy. Stunning.

He's a crucial member of the Tokyo's Chopstick Killahz: a self-described 'post tribal DJ unit' lurking on the fringes of the city's grime scene, in addition to being a Noods Radio resident. He presents some more of his contorted UK bass and gqom derivatives from the far east on the End Of The Death EP. Influences of Jersey club, dancehall and grime are evident throughout, from the reverberated rapid-fire toms of "Run To Mall" or the industrial edged beats of "Random Coherence" or "Throbbing Pain" to even more desolate soundscapes as heard on the chilling "Visitor From The Ocean".

Band members JS Aurelius and Nick Nappa were joined on the evening by Drew McDowall, Varg and Silent Servant - where the collective executed a confronting performance. Employing Coil influenced industrial soundscapes, drone, dark ambient and even some moments of slow-burning techno - they take you on a powerful journey on each side of the record. Aurelius and Nappa run the underground cassette imprint Ascetic House, between Phoenix, Los Angeles and New York City.

Review: Mohammad Reza Mortazavi was properly introduced to us alongside Burnt Friedman, on a Nonplace 12" that came out last year. The only memory we have of that was that it was the dog's bollocks, bringing through Reza's immersive 'Tombak' drum style together with Friedman's own love for percussion. The Iranian artist returns with a new EP for Padre Himalaya, a young imprint with a clear vision, and it's all about his minimalistic drum flex across these five tracks. Much like Friedman's music, Reza has a knack for turning something so simple into something dangerously hypnotic, and this EP has a propensity to lift you away onto a different planet thanks to the awesome power of the drum. Magnificent.

Both tracks doff a cap to the new wave era, offering authentically early '80s sounding chunks of coldwave pop built around throbbing synthesizer arpeggio lines, ice-cold electronic melodies and just about the right amount of late night, eyeliner-clad sleaze. Our pick of the pair is A-side "Ich Verliebe Mich Nie", where half-whispered vocals rise above a throbbing backing track, though there's something adorable about the chugging, reggae-influenced cheeriness of oddball B-side "Pfleg' Mich".
