'Let The Power Flow' (Horny remix) is driven by dusty breaks and florid trumpet leads, plenty of mean bars and slick funk lines. On the flip is an instrumental that's just as compelling.

It's a classy hip-hop record with a very real narrative and superb production that is most often deep and steeped in a dark sense of soul.

Review: Cult German beat maker Bluestaeb is a core member of the Jakarta label family. He has produced with and for others, as well s serving up some hugely seductive solo albums. Here comes another of those with a range of contemporary guests including JuJu Rogers, Miles Singleton, Ric Wilson and Louis VI. The short tracks mean the album moves along swiftly and freely, with plenty of romantic, chord laced numbers as well as more stripped back and late night jams. Soul and jazz are defining overtones here but the whole thing feels fresh and forward's looking rather than too heavily reliant on the classic hip hop tropes.

Review: Jorun Bombay is back once again with more of his masterful beat mash ups and beat juggling 7"s. This is his second this week - well, it's a black wax version of the same EP where the other is bright pink, both on Soundweight. He opens up with 'The Big Bonus Beats' (A Jorun Bombay edit) which has crashing drum hits and an iconic vocal mashed together with some funky guitar riffs and plenty of big, oversized and splashing cymbals. 'Jamaican Funk (A Jorun Bombay edit)' is a super sweet jam with a plunging synth bassline and more classic vocal samples that lend it a neo-soul feel.

Review: East Coast hip-hop group Brand Nubian has a sound that is industrial and heavy on the low-end boom. They have just dropped a 30th-anniversary edition of their seminal In God We Trust album and now the members Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar are back with another 7". First up is 'To The Right' from 1990 and then comes 'Slow Down' from the same year and album, One For All. Both are fine examples of the rap sounds of the era and have very much stood the test of time. Well worth having.

Review: Danny Brown has long been an underground hip hop superstar. Now up to his fifth studio album he has pretty much achieved it all so decides to drill down and make a supremely focussed record that says a lot in just 11 tracks. His flow is reined in and superbly controlled throughout, it's hip hop laced with a sense of psychedelia but also strongly informed by classic, golden era boom-bap - no doubt thanks to the legendary producer behind it all, namely Mr Q-Tip. Featuring raw energy, spiritual thoughtfulness, guest spots from Run The Jewels and Blood Orange, this is an accomplished record from an accomplished artist.

One of the cuts, 'Oooh' got the group a Source Award nomination while the album itself was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo or Group. It should have won, if you ask us.

Their work in the 80s and 90s very much defined the sound as they fused jazz, funk, soul and dance into an all new form that had people all over getting up to get down. Their latest album, Into You, is as good as any of those earlier works that led to several top ten hits and is dead once again by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick who has been with them since their formation in 1979. Across 16 tracks the group showcase their lush sounds and great musicianship with a perfect blend of the old and the new.
