Notes: When the classic MS-20 analog synthesizer appeared in 1978, it had a trusted partner in the SQ-10 step sequencer. Now, after thirty years, the MS-20 has been reborn as the MS-20 mini, and the SQ-10 has evolved into the more modern SQ-1.

The SQ-1 is a compact step sequencer with 2 x 8 steps. It's wealth of connection jacks allows it to be connected to the MS-20 and a variety of other synthesizers. Vintage analog synths or the latest compact synths can be controlled from this single unit. You can also switch between a variety of synthesizer modes and use the step buttons to create performances overflowing with spontaneity, just as when using a volca unit.

Rather than the commonly used V/Oct standard, the CV design of the MS-20 always used the Hz/V standard that provides excellent pitch stability limiting the step sequencers that are able to correctly control the MS-20. As a descendant of the SQ-10, the SQ-1 supports the Hz/V standard, enabling it to perfectly control the MS-20 or MS-20 mini. It goes without saying the V/Oct standard is also supported, and the voltage level of the CV output and polarity of the GATE output can be specified as appropriate for the device you've connected. This versatility will enable you to control a wide variety of other synthesizers as well.

As a connector, the SQ-1 provides two CV/GATE OUT channels, the standard MIDI OUT and USB MIDI, littleBits out (to connect to the littleBits synth kit by littleBits Electronics Inc.), plus the SYNC IN/OUT channel that allows you to connect to the volca series and monotribe. Compact and complete with all the functions you need, the SQ-1 is the ideal hardware sequencer.

The SQ-1 provides two channels (A and B) of 8-step sequencer that can operate consecutively, or be used in a variety of other modes. For example, you can run A and B following each other to function as a 16-step sequencer, ignore the order and make the steps play randomly, or use A and B to control different parameters as they run in parallel. From simple sequences to complex changes, you can choose from a variety of modes to suit your needs.

The 2 x 8 step buttons can be used in the usual way to turn notes on/off, but you can also use the MODE button to switch their function, opening up powerful possibilities such as letting you "perform" the sequence itself, as on a volca unit.

"Active Step" lets you skip steps mid-way through a sequence, and "Step Jump" lets you instantly play just the step that you press, producing irregular rhythms or effects that are reminiscent of short loops. "Slide" produces an effect in which steps are connected smoothly; using this to control a synth bass is an easy way for anyone to generate an acid sound.

Packed with carefully selected functionality, the SQ-1 features a compact and very sturdy sheet-metal body. Placed beside the MS-20 series, you'll notice a sense of solidity that gives the impression they were manufactured in the same era. The unit can operate on two AA batteries or on USB bus power.

Sequence step resolution is selectable as quarter notes, eighth notes, or 16th notes.

You can specify the way in which the step knobs control the pitch. The knob values can specify the pitch directly, or they can specify the closest note in a major, minor, or chromatic scale.

Let's talk about Metropolix

Performance Controls

Metropolix is an interactive sequencer optimized for live performance, jamming, and improvisation i with configurable, hands-on control of all the most essential performance parameters. Sequences transform and mutate with just the twist of a knob; a flick of a switch; a nudge of a slider; or an injection of CV. With Metropolix, your music is as dynamic and evolving as your imagination.

Two Tracks, Interconnected

Two tracks (TRK 1 and TRK 2) are variants of a main pitch/gate sequencer, which is programmed via the PITCH sliders, PULSE COUNT and GATE TYPE switches. Each track interprets the main sequence in a variety of ways i creating complementary variations that enable you to generate counterpoint, polyrhythms, and all manner of sonic movement (both subtle and extreme).

Each of these tracks has its own playback ORDER, sequence LENgth, clock DIVision, SWING amount, SLIDE time, and track GATE lengths. Other track-based sequence variables are accessible from the TRACK MENU, and include Pitch Slider inversion; sequence note range; track transposition; and more. In addition, both tracks have multiple lanes of per-stage playback parameters, including: GATE override; PITCH override; RATCHet count; PROBability of playback; ACCUMulating transposition, and a dedicated CV/CC lane. Each stage also has a SKIP feature, and a pitch SLIDE option.

The Accumulator

Automate pitch movements on a per-track or per-stage basis. Use various trigger types and increments to control variation on your tracks.

Eight Modulation Lanes

Eight Separate modulation lanes are accessed via the MOD button. Each MOD lane has 8-stages of modulation values and its own playback ORDER, LENgth, and clock DIVision; and each lane is routable to one of Metropolix' two assignable outputs, MIDI CC, and dozens of internal destinations, allowing for sophisticated and powerful self-modulation.

Three AUX Inputs and Two CTRL Knobs

A trio of AUX inputs allows for external modulation of user-assignable sequencer parameters for even greater variation, while two assignable CTRL knobs give you direct access to the parameters you want to adjust most frequently during a performance. With dedicated Pitch/Gate outputs for both Track 1 and Track 2; two totally user-assignable outputs (A and B); and internal MOD routing, Metropolix features a wealth of patching opportunities.

100 User Defined Scales

Design and modulate between your own custom scales and root note.

Modulate BPM

Use the CTRL Knobs, AUX Inputs, or Mod Lanes to modulate the BPM of your track and the clock outputs of the Metropolix.

Loopy - Performance Looping

Metropolix also features a Loopy mode, allowing you to instantly play back short sub-sequences, or even "play" the stage buttons directly (like a 'keyboard').

64 Total Recall Presets & Preset Chaining

Metropolix stores up to 64 preset configurations (in 8 banks of 8 presets), and all live settings are stored on the module, ensuring that your Metropolix will always power up exactly as you left it i even if you haven't saved them to a preset. By default presets can change all the structural (menu-based) elements of your sequencer without overwriting the front panel controls, but full recall is also available.

Chain Presets to go hands free while you twiddle other knobs on your synth.

Notes: A typically weird and wonderful approach to sequencing from Soma Labs with this 'organismic sequencer', which generates Eurorack-friendly CV and gate signals based on 'dynamic equilibrium'.

ORNAMENT-8 is an organismic sequencer, or in a broader sense, a synthesizer of behaviour. A unique feature of ORNAMENT is its fully horizontal modular structure that consists of eight equal and independent cells which are special delay lines. It's in fact an analog computer with a temporal dimension, the behaviour of which is determined by patching and adjusting the temporal properties of each cell involved in the generation of the behaviour.

ORNAMENT can be controlled via Eurorack-compatible Control Voltage. The output of ORNAMENT is also standard CV signals that can control LYRA-8, PULSAR-23, Eurorack systems and any equipment that can receive CV, including non-audio ones such as lighting setups or electromechanical installations. For controlling LYRA-8 we developed a special adapter for easy connection to the LYRA sensors while also preserving the ability to play it normally with your fingers.

The adapter attaches to LYRA's surface using magnets which make installation easy and safe. ORNAMENT, as an organismic sequencer, complements LYRA's organismic synthesis nature, making them a perfect pair.

ORNAMENT-8 is based on a completely new principle of synthesis of behaviour. Instead of a vertical structure with a tempo generator on top and some memory for storing sequenced events, Soma Laboratory have have a dynamic equilibrium inside a horizontal structure without any memory, just an infinite "now" that generates the next moment of behaviour. In certain key aspects, it resembles a neural network where there is no difference between "processor" and "memory", where functions are blurred and all structures are very flexible. Because the ORNAMENT is fully modular, you can connect any number of ORNAMENTs into a single network, creating very complex multi-dimensional structures with the same complex behaviour. For those with philosophical inclinations, ORNAMENT is a playground the size of a box of chocolates where you can study fundamental laws of life and society, going beyond linear logical thinking.

ORNAMENT-8 was designed by Vadim Minkin, the new creative mind who recently joined SOMA laboratory. ORNAMENT is intended to be the first in a line of SOMA sequencers developing new principles of behaviour generation and control.

PlayFader has a protective lid that doubles as a stand and feels great in your hand if you want to hold it and play- this is the PlayCase.

When you're travelling, all the controls are safely protected by the lid, held in place with a handy wristband which supports LGBTQ+ equality around the world.

The lid can then be flipped onto the back of PlayFader when you're ready, giving you some grip and a bit more height, making it perfect to play all day!

Each channel has two recording buffers which you can jump, swap and copy between.

PlayFader also has 7 FUN FX modes... for now.

Based on the TE pocket operator punchFX, there is a dedicated FUN button. The idea is that the FUN modes modulate and influence your recorded pattern contents while using the faders to change relevant parameters for the mode you're in.

All FUN modes will be addressable by the built-in accelerometer in future firmware (coming soon), which should be bonkers amounts of fun.

PlayFader has a protective lid that doubles as a stand and feels great in your hand if you want to hold it and play- this is the PlayCase.

When you're travelling, all the controls are safely protected by the lid, held in place with a handy wristband which supports LGBTQ+ equality around the world.

The lid can then be flipped onto the back of PlayFader when you're ready, giving you some grip and a bit more height, making it perfect to play all day!

What's so special about this sequencer?

AS500 is formatted differently and operates differently than other step sequencer.

Traditionally step sequencers run horizontally from left to right then loop back to step one. You can make the pattern shorter, but generally that's it.

AS500 patterns run vertically downwards in columns. As the end of each column is played, the next to the right is played.

AS500 has a unique Jump system. When a Jump switch is on, the rest of the column's steps are bypassed and the sequencer jumps straight to the start of the next column

These two features in particular as familiar enough ways of working to be intuitive, but different enough to force you to work and think in a slightly different way. The end result is you will get sequences and patterns that you might not have created otherwise.

More Variation

Many step sequencers can start to sound repetitive since it's usually the same single pattern looping endlessly.

AS500 allows you to split the sequencer in half and use the right half as a Fill-In pattern to add variation, much like vintage drum machines.

These Fills are activated via a Push Button, or via a trigger pulse from an external modular.

AS500's format and Jump switches, combined with excellent features like Fill-In, Split sequencers and other features makes AS500 a great sequencer package.

Use

If you are familiar with analogue sequencers in general, then most features of AS500 should be fairly self-explanatory, but it would still be worth having a read through the manual.

The sequencer is laid out in vertical columns, eight in total.

The sequencer runs from top to bottom, and left to right.

The Difference Between Reset and Jump

If a Reset is initiated the sequencer returns to step one, the first step of the sequencer.

Use Reset to shorten the sequence.

If a Jump is initiated the sequencer will advance (jump) to step one of the next column to the right.

Notes: NGEN is a unique 16-track MIDI sequencer designed in Sao Paulo / Brazil that lets you combine multiple algorithmic / generative generators and MIDI FXs to sequence multiple hardware or software MIDI instruments.

It offers a completely new way of creating and performing music by abstracting the composition process. Instead of writing sequences from scratch, NGEN lets you quickly generate a new sequence for your drums, basslines, melodies, and chord progressions with a push of a button.
