Multitrack Reworks Vol 1
Multitrack Reworks Vol 1 (hand-stamped 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: MT 001. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Clouds (7:11)
  2. Slave (6:08)
Review: Multitrack Reworks is a new label that will be putting out limited edition, hand-stamped white label 12"s that are made from reworked tunes that have been constructed from the original multitracks. Kicking off the first one is the queen of soul that is Chaka Khan and a version of 'Clouds' with nice loose drums, big string builds and a silky vocal. Flip it over and you will find a brilliantly dynamic and funky new take on the most classic Grace Jones jam, 'Slave To The Rhythm.' It's packed with plenty of rich instrumental licks, a flamboyant sense of melody and of course Grace's own seductive voice.

Cat: NANN 002. Rel: 23 Nov 21
  1. Love Issues (7:33)
  2. Burning Hot (8:20)
  3. Patron (4:57)
Review: A warm welcome back to the shadowy NANN imprint, whose debut release -the brilliant 'Cog in the Wheel' - sold out in record time earlier in the year. There was a good reason for that, of course: it brilliantly turned a dusty chunk of modern soul into a driving, ear-catching deep house delight. The three tracks here are similar cut-and-paste, sample-heavy affairs, each utterly inspired. 'Love Issues' is a bubbly, rolling acid jam rich in TB-303 lines, wild electrofunk synth flourishes, chunky drum machine beats and elements lifted from an old French boogie jam, while 'Burning Hot' is a rolling number rich in chunky, hip-house style beats, toasty organ chords and undulating acid bass. 'Patron', meanwhile, adds weighty, bass-heavy house bounce to the Godfather of Soul with predictably impressive results.

Cruise Music Vinyl Jams Vol 4
  1. Angelo Ferreri - "You Can Do" (6:38)
  2. Mark Funk & Danny Cruz - "Little Bit Of Love" (5:34)
  3. Patrick Wayne, DJ ThreeJay - "Saturday Vibes" (6:45)
  4. Super Drug - "Jump" (5:04)
Review: As if you needed to be told, Cruise Music likes to keep the grooves smooth and sunny, and here they come with volume four. Leading the charge on this VA 12", Angelo Ferreri gets into a proper funky house mode with the snappy, subtly pumping 'You Can Do', while Mark Funk and Danny Cruz have fun with some Latin piano chops and a catchy vocal. Patrick Wayne and DJ Threejay aren't holding back on the samples as they whip up a surefire party starter with the weekend in mind - 'Saturday Vibes' is going to get all manner of dancefloors peaking hard. Super Drug finishes the record off with 'Jump', which leans in on a snappy dabke string hook over a perfect house lick.

Review: Clive From Accounts's tunes are as good as his artist alias. For his latest meeting he serve sup a knowing blend of soul, house and disco from across the ages. The relative newcomer impresses from the off with 'Tell Me' which is a steamy vocal over a fulsome house beat. 'Without Your Love' cuts loose on a more heady and cosmic house groove with some gorgeously seductive trumpet lines drifting in and out of ear shot and 'Strictly Business' is fun, cuddly basement grooves for intimate parties. 'Yukon' is a nice fresh breakbeat to up the energy.

Push The Feeling On (reissue)

  2. Push The Feeling On (MK dub Revisited) (8:40)
  3. Push The Feeling On (MK mix 95) (7:07)
Review: The Nightcrawlers' tune 'Push The Feeling On' is one of US garages most iconic. It was a hit on dance floors and in the charts all over the western world and was also what lay the foundations for MK's whole career. The dub version he served up became a signature sound for the producer throughout the 90s and beyond. That original 95 mix is included here and has the yearning vocals pacing about the mix, the snappy hits and warm, fat drums rolling down low. A Revisited version tweaks things only slightly and the Dub of Doom version is the most chunky and paired back of the lot with a slightly dark sense of menace pervading the whole affair.

  1. For My People (5:04)
  2. Let's Dance (6:38)
  3. Abstract Jazz (4:53)
  4. The Detroit Track (5:04)
Review: The assumption of quality that comes with Patrice Scott records is never let down, and so it goes on this latest refined transmission from his Sistrum label. 'For My People' is a sharp and snappy jam with some of the warmest bass you're likely to hear all year, but it's also smoothed out by mellow keys that provide the starry-eyed magic so intrinsic to Scott's sound. 'Let's Dance' is equally chill, albeit with a nagging swing you won't be able to resist bopping to, whether on the floor or elsewhere in your world. 'Abstract Jazz' offers up something a little more playful as Scott lets the beats come in a little crooked and the keys go darting off into intriguing harmonic configurations, but it's still sophisticated and elegant at its core. 'The Detroit Track' rounds the EP off with another sweet bumper which speaks to Scott's legacy as much as the city he hails from.

  4. Let It Go (Dom Dolla remix) (6:15)
Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. A TMBLV mix is more pumping, Honey Dijon cuts loose on elastic bass and rugged rhythms and Dom Dolla offers a more energetic and main room version.

  4. See Line Woman (Karizma Last 1ne dubstrumental) (6:04)
Review: There's currently a vogue for modern artists reworking the work of soul legends. One of our favourites from said crop has to be this 12" by nu-jazz and broken beat mainstay Atjazz, whose latest efforts come in the form Nina Simone cover, 'See-Line Woman'. Working with Dominique Fils-Aime - a Montreal singer-songwriter noted for taking inspiration from soul icons from the 40s and 60s like Simone and Billie Holiday - the result is a smooth, subdued take on the original Simone B-side. Happier light is shed on a song that originated as a 19th-Century African American folk song for sailors and sex workers.

  1. Workin Scrubs (2:59)
  2. Gold Diggin (2:57)
Review: Casual Connection (real name Lukasz Ru-Kasu) has been in the edit game for a while, with his first digital-only collection of disco and boogie revisions appearing on Alpaca Edits seven years ago. Here he returns with a third 12" single of his own, which also marks his first release of 2021. A-side 'Working Scrubs' is a clever revision of a '90s R&B classic that places the now iconic group vocals atop a rubbery, synth-heavy backing track that sits somewhere between nu-disco and '80s synth-funk. 'Gold Diggin' is another mash-up of sorts, with a much-loved hip-hop vocal sitting atop a heavy, bustling, all action rhythm-track full of stuttering drum hits and cut-up, hip-house style vocal stabs. Proper party-starting music.

Sacred Rhythm Music got an early preview of the project and were keen to support it from the off and now it comes to fruition with this stunning new EP of jazz tinged and cosmic house. The lead insult his 'Wisdom' with an epic vocal performed by the global jazz singing sensation Gregory Porter along with some perfectly sunny synth designs and timeles house drums. A staple of DJ sets by everyone from Derrick May and Laurent Garnier to James Murphy, this Harvey Fuqua and Patrick Cowley production from 1979 is a truly timeless classic whose spirit still lives to this day on modern dancefloors. Review: Two long-time dance music mainstays come together here for a lovely new house single. In one corner is deep house don and Freerange boss Jimpster, in the other is American hip-hop DJ and spoken word artist Rich Medina. 'This Thing' is a nice warm house cut with a thoughtful monologue from Medina adding intimacy, while an instrumental mix strips that back to just the musical house beats. Turbojazz & Sean McCabe link up for a remix on the flip that is a little more lively and upbeat but no less smooth and seductive, while Sean & Tommy's Old Skool dub beefs up the bass and layers in some nice late night chords. A tasteful package for sure.

Review: Dope Jams record store founder and lifelong house music obsessive Anthony Nicholson always serve sup sounds that back up his big talk. The American is well schooled din the classics but never relies on that and instead always brings something fresh. Here he does so in the form of a lush new vocal house single featuring Lailah Reich on Clairaudience. The opening Miquifaye vocal mix is a timeless tune with slick kick-clap combos and rubbery bass. The balmy chords add soul and the vocal is of course the icing on the cake. Flip it over for the instrumental dub, but for our money its the vocal that makes this one.

Highlights abound right across the EP, from the uplifting, summery brilliance of 'Cape Verdean Blues' and the bumpin', synth-heavy US deep house style shuffle of 'Sensitive Soul', to the classic, Bugz In The Attic style broken beat brilliance of 'Frequency Range' and the subtly soulful house warmth of 'Pickin' and Choosin'. Dreamy broken beat closing cut 'Strollin' and the aural summer breeze that is 'Find Another Way' are also superb.

First up is a Soul Power mix of 'In A Better Way' that pumps a warm house vibe, with spiritual vocals and expressive jazz keys. Review: Malik Alston presents Painted Pictures: Air is a collection of long lost tracks. They were all crafted by Malik and his band Painted Pictures and take in jazz, soul and gospel as well as classic Motor City house sounds. There are tunes that dance on nimble keys, are accented with funky sax playing, riddled with lush keys and topped off with jazz vocalists that ooze style. Malik himself describes the album as "a combination of freedom, self awareness, and doing something different and new." He's not wrong, because these tunes are thrilling inventive and rewarding. To hear something as special as 'Almost On The One' on a dance floor can only be an unforgettable experience.

The six-minute 'Nobody Else,' is built on a knotted bassline that never lets up. The silky drums call to mind Kings of Tomorrow and the timeless diva vocal up top is never going to age. Review: House music veterans don't come more seasoned than David Morales, and he's still pressing on with an urgency that puts artists half his age to shame. He's back on his Didrim label with this varied pack of collaborations with vocalists, leading in with the show-stopping, simmering power of 'Everyday Of My Life' featuring Mr V. By way of contrast, there's a sentimental pop tint to 'Come The Moment' with Blakkat and Babygirl, while 'No Boundaries' finds Tilly piling on the contemporary diva stylings. 'Never Give Up' has a classic 90s big room flavour, with a soulful turn from Michelle Perera inciting boundless positivity, and isn't that what house music's meant to be about?

Review: You might think that you could cop a copy of New Order's seminal hit 'Blue Monday' fairly easily and cheaply given its ubiquity over the years. But no, copies in good condition still fetch around 50 quid, so this remastered reissue is well worth a cop. The single's iconic bassline and twitchy synth modulations very much soundtrack a generation, if not an entire youth revolution, but still enliven any dance floor many years later. What's more, the de-humanised vocals will always provide real singalong joy. On the flip is a 'The Beach', which is drenched in echo and reverb and general sonic filth.

Review: "Dream, dream on... your dream will come alive," goes the mantra of 'Dreams', the melancholic 4-chord lead single by eurodance supergroup 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor. We should hope so too. Or, at least, we should hope your dream to own this gold-coloured, 180g audiophile gatefold repress of their 'Very Best Of' album should come true. Forming in 1990 when brothers Martin and Bobby Boer started making bedroom pop in their parent's flat on the 4th floor of their apartment block, this band-cum-techno act have never shied from the lilting emotions of disparate genres, from indie folk to happy hardcore. Assisted by rapper Da Smooth Baron MC and singer Peggy "The Duchess", this album compiles almost every 'hit' from this ambitious studio project's lengthy career, from the beachside naff-trance of 'Never Alone' to the future-dystopian vocoder tones of 'Living In Cyberspace'. Cheese fanatics will love this one.

Review: The art of the remix is no doubt indebted to NYC legends such as Shep Pettibone and Arthur Baker. It's quite fitting then that the latter should curate some of the greatest moments of the former on part two of The Classic 12 Inch Master Mixes Volume One. Pettibone's innovative approach to remixing throughout the '80s and early '90s has had a lasting impact on dance music. Featured on here are his renditions of B B & Q's '(I'm A) Dreamer' where he gets that perfect late night boogie-down vibe in effect, as well as Lionel Richie's classic 'Love Will Conquer All', perfectly streamlining the groove of The Salsoul Orchestra's 'Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)' and lending his deft hand to First Choice's anthemic 'Let No Man Put Asunder' among many others.

Review: Arthur Baker is the perfect host for this new series from Demon Music which focuses on the famous extended remixes of the 80s. Each series will be a multi-disc, various artist collection that is united by one remixer, and there can be few better to kick it off than the legend that is Shep Pettibone. He was a hugely in demand studio hand who reworked multiple genres and everyone from Pet Shop Boys to Duran Duran, New Order to Level 42, George Michael to Erasure. This ambitious, widescreen collection takes in all manner of golden remixes from the world of soul, pop, synth and more.

Where Love Lives (30th Anniversary Edition) (remastered) (Record Store Day 2020)
  1. Where Love Lives (Classic mix) (6:55)
  2. Where Love Lives (Mo' Knuckles mix) (5:57)
  3. Where Love Lives (cut To The Bone mix) (5:05)
Review: Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' is the sound of a generation, a reminder of one of the most vital cultural movements of the last 100 years. It is a perma-hit that unites all ages, colours and creeds, even now, 30 years after it first got hands in the air and tears in the eyes on dance floors of cult clubs around the world. To mark the occasion it gets a special remaster treatment and 12" release for Record Store Day. The Classic Mix - which is still the best - kicks off, followed by a big piano version from Mo Knuckles and a darker, more stripped back Cut To The Bone mix.

Review: In 1991 the UK is in a very different place to the one it occupies today. One thing that hasn't changed in the 30 years between then and now, though, is how incredibly, unbelievably good Primal Scream's Screamadelica was. And still is.

It might have been the studio mastery brought to the mix by the late, great Andrew Weatherall. Perhaps it hit the nail on the head of a year when the country's rock and dance scenes finally met somewhere on the outskirts of Blackburn, or along the M25. Maybe, just maybe, it's because the tracks themselves are just great. Whatever your personal take, this album should be on everyone's shelves. From the hedonism of 'Loaded' to the pseudo-rave euphoria of 'Come Together', and the self love of 'Movin' On Up' always inspires, the record is of its time but resonates through the ages.

Review: For the next installment of Argentinian label Music Broker's tribute series, they have selected some of seminal Parisian duo Daft Punk's finest works and remixes, spanning the last two decades, along with some of the music that inspired them. The Many Faces Of Daft Punk: A Journey Through The Inner World Of Daft Punk features disco royalty such as Niles Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone, while more contemporary producers from the house music spectrum feature also, such as Detroit's Scott Grooves (featuring Parliament/Funkadelic), The Micronauts and Versatile's I:Cube receive de Homem-Christo and Bangalter's midas touch. the latter's 'Disco Cubizm" from '96 being a particular highlight on the remix side of things. Not to mention their roaring rework of indie-pop darlings Franz Ferdinand's classic 'Take Me Out'.

Review: Daje Funk Records is back with four new tracks on the Slam Dunk Vol. 2 EP. It features contributions from Jisco Dazz who serves up the low slung and rubbery groove of 'Change', BPlan continues on with more slo-mo kind tackle on the ultra deep 'Hey Boy', while the ever reliable G. Markus gets down to the disco inferno of 'Pocket Rocket'. For something a bit more streamlined to the dancefloor, Frank Virgilio also makes an appearance and he contributes the evocative deep house of 'What's In My Mind'.

  1. 3000 Dope Spots (5:22)
  2. Call Erykah (4:43)
Review: It's always hard to second-guess Snips, a New York producer, beat-maker and remixer whose Barbershop label is as eclectic as they come. In recent times he's treated us to an epic, hip-hop style instrumental mixtape, modern jazz reworks and a massive soulful house number on Classic. So, what has he got for us this time round? Two fine revisions of noughties neo-soul nuggets, that's what. First up he has his way with a Prince-esque number, adding weighty sub-bass and house-not-house beats to the original's acoustic guitars and punchy brass. He's in smooth, soulful deep house mode on the flip, delivering a tidy and tasteful tweak of an old Erykah Badu gem.

Review: This bumper collection of 12" singles features nine replicas of the singles from the original campaign around the Screamadelica album. It is now 30 years old and stands proud as one of the finest moments in the emergent acid hose scene, not in small part thanks to the late great and legendary producer Andrew Weatherall. The box set comes with prints by the album original cover artist Paul Cannell and some previous unheard mixes (and accompanying instrumental) of 'Shine Like Stars' by the aforementioned Lord Sabre as well as plenty of other great versions by fellow Boy's Own man Terry Farley and others.

Review: French label Wagram keep on documenting the history of electric music with their on going Anthology series. Now up to Volume 6 and still turning out plenty of essential tuned across four sides of wax, this one features the most diverse selection yet. There are blissed out stoner beats like DJ Cam's 'Birds Also Sing For Anamaria', electric house tracks from Martin Solveig in the form of 'Heartbeat' and shuffling, Latin tinged soulful house jams like 'Queixume' which is a superb Masters At Work mix edit. Also on the remix tip is the classic Daft Punk rework of I:cube's 'Disco Cubism' which is clipped, funky, brightly coloured filter house par excellence.

Review: Stand by for a big reissue of a classic 1990 single from a couple of bona fide legends here: Junior Sanchez and Dajae combined to beautiful effect on 'Be With U' for the Club Sweat label and now offer a new 2.0 take. It's got the sort of huge diva vocal that you just don't get so often the days with simple but effective house production bolstering the good time feels. The original is included and next to version 2.0 sounds of its time, but then Yolanda Be Cool goes for the main room with more twisted synth work and sweaty, tech tinged drums. The final Dance System remix is pure fun.
