Review: Marie Davidson's latest single 'Y.A.A.M.' is a poignant critique of power dynamics in the music industry - favouring authenticity and passion in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships - out of which the Canadian artist finds fuel to fan the driving flames of existential industrial electro-techno. The track opens with a juddering, in-between-4x4-and-2-step electro beat, which lasts for over a minute before Davidson takes up the mic: "do you follow me?". What ensues is an imperfect list of music industry quibbles, which flow over the monstrously huge backing - "entrepreneurs, influencers, producers, managers / nothing for you and me" - in stark but gallows-comedic contrast to the plea to relocate our arses to the dancefloor. In Davidson's own words, the track was inspired by a haughty, lecturing email from a music industry insider: "I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words," she recalls, "and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun."

Funeral Fashion (Sarin remix) (3:56)
Review: QUAL is the solo project of William Maybelline from Lebanon Hanover, and one known for its "meaner, darker, and nastier" persona. The name qual means pain in German and since the 2015 debut Sable, the moniker has delved into dark, minimal synth, old-school EBM, and industrial electronics using analogue equipment. Following the 2021 LP Tenebris in Lux and the 2022 remix album Re-Animate, he now returns with Techsick featuring three new tracks and a Sarin remix. Highlights include the metal-influenced 'Dancing in Hell,' the familiar minimalist 'Techsick,' and the dual-sided 'Funeral Fashion,' blending classic EBM with a techno remix. The first 12" vinyl edition is limited to 500 copies so move fast.

Sanktion Libido - "Dream On You" (4:56)
Fakk - "Naturalenza?" (5:33)
PO - "Fuzschal" (6:28)
AMQN - "Persecuta" (4:35)
Review: Shift Records debuts with a potent collection of four techno tracks on their first release, bringing a dystopian future to life through sound. Set in the year 3666, the label's narrative is one of a world where humanity has lost hope, and a clandestine operation, SHIFT, emerges to breathe life back into a darkened Earth. On Side-1, it opens with Sanktion Libido's 'Dream on You,' a haunting track that pulses with deep, hypnotic rhythms, that blend EBM and techno. A2 follows with Fakk's 'Naturalenza,' blending organic elements with mechanical precision for an intense, driving groove. but also, a nostalgic trip. On the flip side, B1's 'Fuzschal' by P.O. is a sonic weapon, its relentless beats and dark atmosphere pushing the listener further into the dystopia. B2 closes with AMQN's 'Persecuta,' a track that combines futuristic soundscapes with a raw, industrial edge. Shift Records #1 delivers top-tier techno that captures the essence of a future in need of sonic salvation.

Review: Chicago mainstay and Disctechno label head Mark Grusane reunites with Detroit's Eric Schwab for the second instalment of the Midwest Rhythms series. It's a real quality EP that takes you to the heart of the Motor City with 'Easy Strider' blending low-slung, skittering drum patterns with a classic FM bass line and hints of 303. 'Acid Hole' offers an acidic pulse that builds tension over a jacking 707 beat that is brought to life with spacey effects and on the B-side, 'You're In Danger' merges dissonant pads, plucky synths, rich bass and warped verbal warnings. The record closes with Eric's reimagined version of 'A House of My Own' which brings fresh textures to a modern Chicago house classic.

Quarter 25 (SIRS remix) (6:03)
Review: XXX is back with a steamy 16th EP and it features two original tracks by Anastasia Zems & Radial Gaze on the A-side, with remixes from Chinaski & S.I.R.S. on the B-side. The originals are characterised by dark industrial vibes, sharp kicks, and throbbing yet playful basslines that will persuade any dance floor to get throwing shapes. On the flip side, Chinaski's remix takes an unexpected turn as a trance-like trip that climbs higher and faster with each beat. S.I.R.S. offers a contrasting disco remix with an irresistibly groovy bassline, and just as irresistible is the playful artwork by Gees Voorhees that perfectly captures the eclectic nature of this EP.

Review: CyberindustrialEBMwavepost-punkIDMmutantelectro. No commas, no punctuation, just one throbbing, convulsing, dystopian mass informed by the bleakest visions of a sci-fi future we deserve but definitely don't want. Originally hailing from Australia, but long-since relocating to Berlin's eastern ends, Kristian Bahoudian, AKA Kris Baha, has clearly absorbed his surrounds, grown through them, and learnt how to channel that brutalism into something truly potent. It's also narratively driven, with the titular spirits in the system a reference to humans in the age of advanced artificial intelligence - beholden to dictatorial codes that rob us of our essence, vitality and individuality. An awakening among a select few means a small number of people become self-aware, again, and can begin pushing back. And this point of tension, between human and machine, plays out sonically. Talk about painting a vivid picture.

Ach Golgotha (Maldoror Is Dead) (18:46)
The Mystical Body Of Christ In Chorazaim (The Great In The Small) (19:49)
Review: The reissue of Current 93's Nature Unveiled brings back an iconic album that first captivated listeners with its avant-garde sound. This album features two striking tracks: 'Ach Golgotha (Maldoror Is Dead)' and 'The Mystical Body Of Christ In Chorazaim (The Great In The Small).' 'Ach Golgotha (Maldoror Is Dead)' stands out as an irreverent celebration of orthodox liturgical rites, inspired by the demon Maldoror, a creation of French poet Lautreamont. This track, with its dark and mystical aura, reflects the early influences on Tibet, including the magician Aleister Crowley. Fans appreciate the eerie and otherworldly appeal of this piece, which retains its power and impact decades later. 'The Mystical Body Of Christ In Chorazaim (The Great In The Small)' complements the first track with its own haunting soundscapes. The album's ability to transport listeners to a realm of fantastic nightmares underscores Current 93's lasting influence in the experimental music scene. Pressed on picture disc, this version is extra special for collectors who look for unique music and packaging.

St Peter's Keys All Bloody (11:17)
Review: Embarking on a series of new Current 93 reissues via his own label Cashen's Gap, David Tibet here reminisces on the very second LP to be released under the moniker, Dogs Blood Rising. Said to have been "reeling in the weeks - which felt like years - after my first Current 93 album, I had started on the difficult second album" (Dogs Blood Rising) after "having been asked to appear on both Top Of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test 93 times in the same week". Cult mythologising aside, this five-track sonic gorgonesquerie is a fantastic primer in early occult industrial music, leading on the iconoclastic canto 'Christus Christus' and ending on the chamber-effected monologue 'St. Peters Keys All Bloody'. The songs cast implicit scorn on the popular imaginaria that insist that heaven and hell are divided; Tibet is keen to collapse them into one, devising a new sonic eschatology all unto his own.

Review: Gesaffelstein's fourth album, GAMMA, marks a departure from his previous work, embracing camp over cool. With influences ranging from seventies electro-punk to synth-pop, the album is a riot of overdriven synth-pop and vintage rock'n'roll. Singer Yan Wagner's oily baritone adds depth, channeling Dave Gahan's toughness with a humorous twist. The album's eccentricity shines through in Wagner's deranged lyrics and unpredictable delivery, injecting humor and unpredictability into the mix. Tracks like 'The Urge' and 'Hysteria' showcase Gesaffelstein's knack for crafting sharp hooks and infectious grooves. Clocking in at concise lengths, each track contributes to the album's charm, focusing on thrusting hips and sharpened hooks rather than lofty concepts. GAMMA is a refreshing departure from Gesaffelstein's previous sound and a exciting new direction.

Review: IDM powerhouse and still-fresh Brainfeeder signee Hakushi Hasegawa returns with Mahogakko, the latest mindmelter to paint the perpetually morphogenic work of art that is their... ahem... music. Once again, this is a broad set of bad-apple, black MIDI-influenced compositions, all of which push the sonic limit to the floating point of timeline-breaking cacophony, verging on sugar-rushing ideasthetic noise. Imagine an alternate universe of techno-faeries all aflutter in some forest grotto out of conscious sight; despite meaning well and maintaining a vivid glee, this pixie-hive's demeanour defaults to a wild, puckish, erratic and swarming fever, to the point of grave danger for the human visitant. We hold this image firmly in mind, as it concurs with the news of Hasegawa's recent grand gestural face reveal, after which interpretations of their music will never be the same. A thoroughly dynamic record, Hasegawa is unafraid of the contrast between loud and quiet, in a totally singular fashion that bucks the expectation usually laid at the feet of electronica artists. Every sound here, from 'Boy's Texture' to 'Forbidden Thing (Kimmotsu)', is as machine-elven, fidgeting and hyperrealistic as would be expected, yet also unexpected, of today's zeitgeist, that of TikTok-dancing phantasmagorias and disgust-threshold broaching cute slime aesthetics. Everything is so crisp and glossy that the sonic metal deployed in its making sound to have far surpassed their liquidus points, not long before having been strained into a kind of magick philtrum set aside for the braving of fatal fairy realms and fatal fairy realms alone.

Review: Some 40 years ago, Hunting Lodge was nearing the peak of its fertile "Tribal" period. In celebration of this anniversary, Nomad Souls is now released. All of the included tracks have been lovingly remastered from the original reels and cassettes, restored and mastered by Grant Richardson, with further vinyl mastering by Sion Orgon. Hunting Lodge was an American industrial/experimental band formed by Lon C. Diehl, Richard Skott and Carla Nordstrom (then known as Karl Nordstrom) in Port Huron, Michigan in 1982. Their first live appearance took place in September 1982 at the Harrington Ballroom inside the Harrington Hotel. The band was far ahead of it's time and perhaps would have seen an ongoing growth of interest if the band lived in Europe. Inspired by the sounds of Throbbing Gristle and others, the act would probably be most compared to the likes of Einsturzende Neubauten. This compilation becomes the most complete release that the band would put out. Industrial, rhythmic noise and avante garde electronic fans will rejoice in discovering this.

Review: IAMX is Chris Corner's solo project, which can be traced back to 2004, around the time his former band, Sneaker Pimps, went on hiatus. Spanning multiple genres, from burlesque-hued dark cabaret to electronic rock and unbridled dance music, there have now been eight studio albums, two remix records, two live albums and two experimental albums released under the moniker. Fault Lines² is among the finest in that oeuvre, and the most recent. Fresh for 2024, this collection of work paints a vivid picture of the artist - at times unsettling and slightly eerie, in other moments melancholic-yet-euphoric, it's dramatic, theatrical, innovative and strangely teetering on the brink of traditional and more explorative schools of sound. Probably not something you'll hear much like again this month.

Review: If this is your first encounter with Geneva Jacuzzi clearly you need to spend more time in the Los Angeles underground art-music scene. The artist has been building a huge reputation for herself through eccentric and often unhinged shows that border on performance pieces, often using masks, mind-blowing costumes, large scale art installations and confrontational design to leave a lasting impression. The fact her music sounds like contemporary pop stepped into a time machine, hit the 1980s button, and then realised travelling back through the ages renders things raw and lo-fi, also helps with the impact. Here were are then, album number three and her first for the exceptional Dais. It's mechanical, it's groovy, it's human, it's plastic, it's big, it's accessible, it's weird, and it's enough to make you remember pop music can and should be high art.

Review: Italian-born, Berlin-based. These details alone are enough to mark Velvet May out as a product of location. Italy has long-been obsessed with a distorted futurism, musically at least, with a slew of hugely respected noise pioneers calling the country home, particularly in northern areas around Torino. Meanwhile, Germany's capital is all about those dystopian aesthetics and technophile attitude. Fusing together industrial, rock, and electronic in a visceral, mechanical, human-trapped-in-machine amalgamation of sound, the grit of production lines meets the unbridled raw energy of punk, the sex droid seduction of electroclash steaming headfirst into the forward momentum of techno. It's angry, frustrated, perhaps even desperate, voices calling out from behind wires and controllers. Yet, in other moments ('Haven of Thrill', for example) it's positively life-affirming and, dare it be said, owes something to the euphoria of rave.

Review: Masami Akita, known as Merzbow, continues his sonic exploration with 'Circular Reference,' his latest release and debut on No Holiday. Renowned as a pioneer of extreme noise, Akita unleashes a torrent of synthesised tones intermingled with layers of feedback and midrange noise, creating an intense listening experience. Despite the relentless intensity, the album also offers moments of lurching rhythms and uneasy calm, characteristic of Merzbow's distinctive style. With over 500 recordings since 1980, Merzbow remains a seminal figure in noise music, drawing inspiration from diverse influences including progressive rock, heavy metal, and dadaism. The name 'Merzbow' itself pays homage to Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, reflecting Akita's fascination with found objects and avant-garde aesthetics. Circular Reference promising to impress long time fans while making some new ones along the way. Amplify the experience by playing it loud, and experience Akita's latest impact on experimental music.

Review: Recorded early 1984, by this point Carlos Peron was already something of a household name within the electronic music world thanks to efforts with seminal outfit Yello. If you're familiar, you'll know the group make a lot of energetic, danceable yet experimental stuff, which at times borders on club but is really synth music in the truest sense. Nothing Is True Everything Is Permitted takes us to a very different place indeed. Frequently described as a dark soundtrack without a film, this record has gone down in cult electronica history for its refusal to be anything specific, other than something resolutely itself. The tunes here are dramatic, sometimes even intimidating and certainly frequently unnerving. At other moments, they are at the vanguard of field and found sound recordings, or lost in the ether haze of lush ambient.

Review: Dark Entries picks up Severed Heads yet again for Ear Bitten, a double LP reissue of some of the band's earliest material. Pegged as early pushers of the Australian underground industrial scene, Severed Heads emerged in the wake of a former project also shared between three members, Tom Ellard, Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright: Mr. And Mrs. No Smoking Sign. The edgier name Severed Heads was also, conveniently, snappier, and the sonic result of this resignal act would soon prove it a good decision. Though they say they aimed simply to take after forebears like Throbbing Gristle or Suicide, Ear Bitten proves much more than the simple fact of stylogeny. The 22-track record was born of an anarchic assemblage of found domestic and street-larked objects (as well as specialist musical instruments) blurring the lines between the two: using every sound-making tool from cassette deck, to rare Korg or Kawai synth, to proverbial pots and pans, to open-reel (and thus implicatively fuckable-with) dictaphones, Ear Bitten offers a diabolical vision of the sheer, wordless length of the post-punk deserts parched by their 70s, New York precursors.

Review: Ungod, the inaugural album by industrial rock band Stabbing Westward, debuted in 1994, merging intense guitar riffs with moody, dark electronic elements and encapsulated the angst and energy of the early 90s alternative music scene. Produced by John Fryer, renowned for his work with Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode, Ungod includes standout tracks like 'Violent Mood Swings', 'Control', and 'Nothing', all raw, emotive vocals and the band's gritty, atmospheric sound. While it didn't achieve mainstream commercial success, Ungod developed a cult following, solidifying Stabbing Westward's position as a significant influence in the industrial rock genre. The album's dark, introspective themes and innovative production techniques continue to resonate within the industrial rock landscape, offering a dynamic and compelling mix of electronic music and rock. During a time when Nine Inch Nails dominated the scene, Stabbing Westward was equally impactful within the underground music community. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Ungod is being reissued for the first time since its original release, this time in translucent red and black marbled vinyl.
