Think Twice
Cat: MK 65006. Rel: 25 Jul 25
Review: A flummoxing fusion of jazz, soul and funk from 1972, Donald Byrd's Think Twice is ironically one of few jazz records that we don't really have to think twice about. Taken from the bokeh-grained, 1974 impressionistic prog-jazz opus Stepping Into Tomorrow - on which a whirlwind cast of performers including Mayuto Correa, Larry Mizell, Gary Bartz and Harvey Mason also appear - Byrd's unmistakable trumpet is heard whinnying across this LP-fronter, which rides serious thermals of flugelhorn, soprano and alto sax, ARP synth and backing choir. The vocals by Kay Haith are duly cautionary, insisting but seemingly also tantalising our worst impulses: "Maybe we oughta think twice... Before we start something nice / No need to sacrifice the spice in our lives, ooh ooh / our love's like fire and ice, pretty baby / That's why we oughta think twice..." A rare anti-YOLO anthem!

I Love The Girl
Review: Originally released in 1974 and now reissued on vinyl, this album transformed the legendary Byrd's career direction. After years as a hard bop heavyweight and collaborator with the likes of Art Blakey, Coltrane and Herbie Hancock, Byrd found commercial and creative renewal through his partnership with producers Larry and Fonce Mizell. The third album in their five-record run on Blue Note, this pushed their progressive sound to deeper, darker territory, riding a funkier, more introspective current than his previous albums. The title track remains a defining work, its hypnotic groove and haunting optimism making it a favorite of future hip-hop artists like J Dilla and A Tribe Called Quest. Byrd's trumpet glides with elegant restraint, weaving through Chuck Rainey's basslines and Gary Bartz's saxophone work. Mizell's signature synthesiser textures add a lush and cosmic layer. Tracks like 'Think Twice' and 'Design A Nation' are grounded in sophisticated funk minimalism, blending subtle vocal refrains with intricate instrumentation. The gentler moments like 'Rock and Roll Again' and 'I Love The Girl', explore a softer, more soulful style without losing their sense of forward motion. Though often dismissed at the time by jazz traditionalists, 'Stepping Into Tomorrow' is now rightly seen as a cornerstone of 70s fusion and rare groove.

Aquarius
Review: Rare groove fans, take note of yet another gem from the good folks at P-VINE as they reissue Les DeMerle's iconic cover of 'A Day In The Life,' famously sampled in O.C.'s hip-hop classic 'Time's Up.' It's a laidback and jazzed up sound with deep cut rhythms, big horns and conversational sax leads that hit different. Alongside the jazz-funk gem comes 'Aquarius' with DeMerle's sharp drum breaks (which in the past have been sampled by Jurassic 5, De La Soul and DJ Shadow) ride beneath funky keys work and joyous horns that persuade you to get up and move. Pressed in very limited quantities, it's a vital addition to any hip-hop or rare groove set.

Mixing first-time-on-wax rarities with unreleased edits and live recordings, only 400 copies are available, and notably three cuts are vinyl-only due to licensing hell. There's a storming live take on Deodato's 'Super Strut' from Finnish psych-fusion crew Saimaa, a gospel-choir-led 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' from Mike LeDonne's Groover Quartet, and Quasimode's jazzed-up spin on 'Hi Tech Jazz' - originally by Galaxy 2 Galaxy - edited by Murphy himself. Other highlights include a dubbed-out 'Riot In Lagos', Underworld via Budapest jazz trio 3io, and Chip Wickham's flute-heavy flip on Santana's 'Jungle Strut'.

Review: Kyoto Jazz Sextet mark their tenth anniversary with a pressing 12" pressing, a fresh singular take on 'Dosojin No Uta', a traditional folk song from Nagano's Nozawa Onsen Village, now reimagined as a soul jazz piece. The track first surfaced in 2022 as a demo for the Dosojin Festival video and gained quiet buzz before finalisation in 2025 with new drums and bass. On the B-side is heard 'Extra Freedom', the Sextet's erstwhile most-streamed hit (now newly pressed to vinyl) plus a jazz reinterpretation of Shuya Okino's 'Still In Love', with Navasha Daya and Tomoki Sanders. This release is the first from KJCC, a creative collective founded by Okino flaunting key Kyoto jazz figures.

Meditations On Integration
Review: After a one-off 45 turned up on Paul Murphy's desk, it didn't take long for Jazz Room to come calling. The result: a scorching double-header due for the end of June 2025, with Jungle Fire members at the controls. On the A-side, Sun Ra's 'Watusa' is reimagined as a driving Latin Afrosound workout, all percussion and propulsion, already picking up airplay on Gilles Peterson's BBC 6 Music show. Flip it and you'll find a deep-grooving take on Charles Mingus' 'Meditations On Integration', funked-up but still meditative, a bold recut of a classic.

Panama
Review: This is a single taken from UK jazz-funk outfit Funkshone's debut album which features a cover of the classic free-soul anthem 'I Believe In Miracles' by the Jackson Sisters. It's a raw and direct funk-soul sound that has been increasingly popular in recent years with champions like Floating Points often weaving it into his sets. On the B-side, they offer a freshly recorded take on 'Panama' by Roy Porter Sound Machine, which was previously only found on select CD editions. It is powered by an explosive drum break that hits with near-manic intensity from the very first beat and is a nice driving counter to the soulful A-side.

As Long As I Can Hold My Breath (By Night)
Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.

Sleeping Beauty
Review: Originally released in 1979, 'Sleeping Beauty' catches Sun Ra and the Arkestra at their most seductive - gliding between slow, funk-laced grooves and spaced-out jazz ritual. 'Springtime Again' floats on dreamy Rhodes chords and soft percussion, with ghostly vocals murmuring just out of reach. 'Door of the Cosmos' follows, folding in chant-like singing and funk-laced bass, equal parts devotional and dancefloor. Then there's the title track: a slow, luxurious sprawl of keys, horns and mood, glowing with after-hours warmth. A key figure in experimental jazz, Sun Ra led his ever-evolving Arkestra from the mid-1950s onwards, blending free jazz, doo-wop, electronics, poetry and science fiction into a visionary body of work. This reissue on Strut gives 'Sleeping Beauty' the shine it deserves - one of Ra's most intimate and accessible transmissions.

Review: New Zealand ensemble The Circling Sun follow up their debut with seven new compositions that blend mid-70s spiritual jazz with modular synth work and Afro-Cuban rhythmic structures. 'Constellation' opens with choral motifs and analogue pulses, setting the tone for a set that shifts easily between acoustic and electronic palettes. 'Mizu' and 'Seki' both lean into syncopated hand percussion, with upright piano and saxophone sitting high in the mix. 'Amina' introduces layered vocals over a looser, groove-driven rhythm, while 'Flying' stretches further into ambient territory, guided by slow synth arpeggios and minimal melodic phrasing. 'Teeth' cuts back to more percussive material, cycling through drum and modular interplay without reaching for climax. Closer 'Evening' softens the pace, drawing on warm textures and sustained chords to round out the set. The sequencing keeps the energy in motion without pushing too far into repetition. It's a subtle but deliberate shift in direction - less revivalist than their previous work and more focused on tone and movement.

Titled Rituals, this first volume is a birds-eye blend of jazz, soul and house of an international retinue, spotlighting lesser-known names together with a few more familiar underground figures. This first volume in a series offers a wide-angle snapshot of a scene in motion, built from the same crate-digging instincts and personal selection rituals that drive Josh's own work.

Love In Memory
Bluebell
Review: London-based producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson) teams up with Melbourne pianist Finn Rees for two collaborative pieces recorded in a short session at SFJ Studios. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were laid down over consecutive days using analogue equipment, including mellotron, Wurlitzer and ribbon mics and mixed through a 70s Studer desk. The result is a measured blend of jazz-inflected composition and cinematic texture, leaning into the soft-focus feel of Italian film scores and 70s library music. 'Love In Memory' is the more stripped-back of the two, built around glissando keys and lightly arranged strings while 'Bluebell' adds bass from Matthew Hayes and develops in longer arcs, with warmer low-end and more defined structure. Both tracks avoid excess, favouring tone and pacing over virtuosity. String parts from Clementine Brown further the record's focus on texture rather than drama. The collaboration doesn't aim to be definitive but lands confidently as a quiet, well-formed experiment between two artists working with a shared vocabulary.

Review: Born in New York and raised in San Francisco, Eddie Henderson came up in rarefied company, his parents having been friends with Miles Davis; nothing felt accidental about the fact that he would go on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory, even though he was able to juggle this with a life outside of music too, near concurrently earning medical degree from Howard. But it was in Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band that his singular path through jazz really gun-started: by '76, Henderson had emerged as a sharp jazz-funk infused voice, cutting Heritage, his is second album as leader for Blue Note, with producer Skip Drinkwater and a band stacked with heavy improvisers. As heard better than ever on this signature Blue Note via Kevin Gray remaster, the driven stutters of 'Acuphuncture' and the murky slakes of 'Dark Shadow' sure do lock in a grand sense of cosmic unease.

Review: Cal Tjader's 1975 session sees the legendary vibraphonist deep in conversation with Brazilian jazz, pulling rhythmic cues from Rio and translating them through a sun-dazed Californian lens. With Airto Moreira producing, George Duke arranging, and Hermeto Pascoal, Raul De Souza and David Amaro lending their colour, it's a record built on expert interplay and breezy complexity. 'Amazonas' opens with percussive shimmer and modal drift, while 'Xibaba' and 'Mindoro' balance groove with melodic looseness. On the flip, 'Tamanco No Samba' leans into funkier syncopation, contrasting the hazy melancholy of 'Corine' and the closing slink of 'Cahuenga'. There's clarity in how each part moves-airy but assured-and the new AAA cut from the original tapes gives it warmth without excess polish. It's a joy to hear fusion this fluid, with just enough weirdness from Hermeto to keep it from coasting.

54-46 Was My Number
Review: Miami trio Fat Produce continue their mission to rewire soul-jazz with two deep-grooving interpretations that balance reverence with flair. On the A-side, 'No Way' channels Boogaloo Joe Jones via clean guitar licks and crisp, swaggering drums, nodding to the original's funky lilt while bringing a thicker low-end and a slower, sunkissed pulse. '54-46 Was My Number' strips Toots & The Maytals' vocal swagger down to a taut, instrumental shape; guitarist Addison Rifkind picks out the melody with lyrical patience, letting the phrasing dance over a tight, rootsy rhythm section. Tracked live to tape with upright bass and mixed analogue in LA, both pieces glow with warmth and grit, landing squarely between homage and refresh. It's feel-good music with a knowing touch-cool, unforced, and ready for the floor or the afters.

Review: Released without a hint of fanfare first time round in 2021, this deeply intimate collaboration between Ukrainian vocalist Yana Pavlova and Berlin-based producer Pavel Milyakov continues to command attention, almost of its own accord. Built out of minimal guitar patterns, submerged dub-influenced bass and spectral saxophone contributions from Alex Zhang Hungtai, the LP unfolds through a mix of improv and aleatory algo-synthesis, where rather than smoothing over imperfections, the artists lean into them; mic rustle, background clicks and ambient irregularities all inform on its dark jazzy, trancelike post-humanoid atmos.

Willow
Review: Olympia jazz collective Obridor, active from 1976 to 2006, spent three decades shifting through line-ups under the steady direction of keyboardist Michael Moore. With contributions from drummer Steven Bentley, saxophonists Vincent Soluna and Tom Russell, and multi-instrumentalist Walter Thomas Russell, the group produced a rich, often overlooked catalogue. Two standouts from their archive now land on vinyl for the first time: 'Blink Samba' and 'Willow'. The forme, recorded in 1983 at Russian Hill Studios, San Francisco, is a high-velocity percussive burner with a sharp Latin curve, pulled from a full album session that didn't see digital release until 2023. On the flip, 'Willow' throws you straighter-up into a jagged bassline and restless pulse.

Review: New Zealand's The Circling Sun return with another richly textured outing, shifting their spiritual jazz foundation into deeper, mid-70s territory. Where their debut nodded to the 60s, this follow-up lands closer to the cosmic funk of Azymuth and Airto Moreira, with flashes of Yusef Lateef's Atlantic-era lyricism. Tracks like 'Constellation' and 'Flying' balance analogue synthwork with hand-played percussion and vintage drum kits, while 'Mizu' and 'Teeth' swirl with ambient warmth and dubby low-end. The acoustic instruments-upright piano, saxophone, congas-are woven into modular electronics with remarkable sensitivity, letting the music glide between locked Afro-Cuban rhythms and free-floating jazz impressions. There's a choral quality, too-vocals appear more texturally than lyrically, adding a devotional atmosphere to pieces like 'Amina' and 'Evening'. It's meditative without losing momentum, retro-futurist without pastiche, and quietly expansive.

A Night In Tunisia

Leeway
Review: A reissue that brings renewed attention to one of British jazz's most enigmatic figures, pianist and composers. Originally released in 1965, the album features Taylor alongside drummer Jon Hiseman, bassist Ron Rubin, and soprano saxophonist Dave Tomlin. Despite its historical obscurity, Pendulum is a remarkable early example of modern British jazz. The exploratory spirit of the era is recorded here with clarity and emotional depth. Taylor approaches the piano with a rhythmic and harmonic freedom that recalls hints of Andrew Hill, constantly shifting the ground beneath his collaborators. The interpretations of standards like 'But Not For Me' and 'A Night in Tunisia' are radical in their reconstruction, with Taylor deconstructing and reshaping their core elements into something both alien and familiar. His original compositions on the second half further reveal a singular voice that was both lyrical and fractured, full of promise and haunted by volatility. The album's raw, immediate recording quality adds to its intimate, almost volatile energy. Taylor's mental struggles would sadly cut short his life and output. Whether you are a seasoned jazz listener or new to the genre, this album can be enjoyed by all who listen.

Review: First out in 1975 on Nippon Columbia, Funky Stuff stamped the seal on Jiro Inagaki's jazz rock period - and what a finale. With pianist Hiromasa Suzuki handling writing and arrangement, the album leans hard into punchy psych, fuzzwacked guitar, rubbery bass, brass stabs and whip-tight drums; Suzuki conducts things sharply and melodically, steering Soul Media into tighter territory. Inagaki, who'd previously led The Soul Mates and His Black Rhythm Machine, praised Suzuki's knack for bold ideas and memorable phrasing, a quality clearly running through this set. The sound is tight and bright; less freeform jam, more focused funk workout, catching 70s Japanese jazz as it shimmies in Cuban motion toward the dancefloor.

Review: Shelved for a decade, then issued as a double LP in 1975, Jacknife restores two sessions recorded by Jackie McLean at Van Gelder Studio, one in 1965, the other in 1966. The earlier set (tracks 1-5) hears McLean in volatile form, flanked by Charles Tolliver, Lee Morgan, and a young Jack DeJohnette. The follow-ups (6-10), unreleased on their own to this day, pare the sounds back to a quartet, with pianist Larry Willis the claviered constant. Rooted in post-bop but leaning modal, Jacknife is sharp, searching, and on occasions as raw as a rusted cleaver. Originally planned as separate Blue Note titles, both volumes were mothballed before surfacing together as one.

Review: Leeds-based group The Sorcerers expand their palette with eight new compositions that draw on spiritual jazz, minimalism and vintage electronics. The material continues their dialogue with the Ethiopique sound, though here it acts more as foundation than frame. 'Echoes of Earth' opens with slow, circular phrasing and a loosened rhythmic centre, setting a subdued tone. 'Ancestral Machines' and 'Abandoned Satellites' layer Mellotron, Jen 73 and Farfisa textures over sparse percussion, edging closer to early synthesiser music without abandoning their core ensemble dynamic. The Great Bell' and 'Beneath the Dunes' both sit lower in tempo, the former driven by low brass and negative space, while the latter hints at ambient structure. 'The Ghosts of the Black Drift' and 'The Infinite' stretch the harmonic language slightly further, with electronics used atmospherically rather than melodically. 'The Last Transmission' closes the set on a more resolved note i slightly brighter, but still understated. The group's refusal to lean into retro stylisation keeps the project grounded, and it's not a radical departure but a carefully measured step into expanded terrain.

Review: Swedish composer Sven Wunder sets sail into gentle waters on his fifth full-length, continuing his vision of orchestrated jazz-pop with a breezy, maritime palette. From the bright, flute-led optimism of 'Setting Off' to the melancholy stillness of 'Still Moorings' and the hazy shimmer of 'Warmer Air', the record unfolds like a slow morning tide, shaped by finely tuned arrangements for brass, strings and percussion. Tracks like 'Scenic Byway' and 'Windward' move with soft momentum, drawing on modal jazz and cinematic soul, while 'Deep Sea' and 'Turning Tides' dip into darker, eddying territory without disrupting the gentle drift. Wunder's rhythm section is quietly confident, anchoring these arrangements without overstatement. With each release, he expands a soundworld that sits somewhere between 70s library music and sun-dappled exotica, but here it's rendered with even greater poise-mature, painterly and quietly transportive.

Review: We Release Jazz proudly purr-loins Hiroshi Suzuki's jazz-fusion-funk gem Cat, first recorded in 1975 and released in 76. With liner notes by Edo jazz critic Teruo Isono, the scene is painted in vivid detail: after moving to LV in 1971 to record with Buddy Rich, Suzuki returned to Japan for a two-day session at Nippon Columbia. What he'd learned from Rich stuck to him like sticky viscidia, resulting in a smooth cross-pollination, spotlighting Suzuki's trombone and Takeru Muraoka's saxophone: this tomcat's territory had been assuredly marked. A prized find among jazz collectors and lofi beat remakers alike, Cat sits alongside Ryo Fukui's Scenery as a supernovaic classic of Japanese jazz.

Double Standards
Review: Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustav Horneij, operating solo as Organic Pulse Ensemble, channels the raw urgency of spiritual jazz into a tight, groove-led six-tracker that's both politically charged and rhythmically compelling. From the searing opener 'Oppression Is Nine Tenths Of The Law' to the rolling cadences of 'Have Nots And Have Lots', Horneij leans into the genre's activist roots-balancing meditative phrasing with sharp, insistent energy. Tracks like 'Peace As A Political Statement' and 'Double Standards' bristle with a tension that never boils over, maintaining hypnotic repetition without monotony. 'Skulder Och Skuldror', the record's sole nod to Horneij's native tongue, is all loping bass and simmering cymbals, while 'Balancing The Scales' swings with understated resolve. It's jazz as resistance: stripped-back but never hollow, sincere without being heavy-handed. In fusing past and present, Horneij contributes something fresh to the canon-one man, many instruments, and a message delivered with purpose.

Review: Recorded in November 1959, this classic American hard bop session finds the young artist already forging a distinctive voice on the tenor. Backed by an all-star cast with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the album captures a moment of transition for Shorter, just as he was beginning his tenure with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The tenor saxophonist's first session as a leader, stands as a confident and engaging debut that hints at the genius to come. The six-track set is dominated by Shorter's originals, five in total, with the lone standard being a spirited and swinging take on 'Mack the Knife'. 'Down in the Depths' is the longest cut and is known for its moody development and dynamic solos, while Cobb's drumming is tasteful, commanding and endlessly musical. The rhythm section, then part of Miles Davis' working group, provides a locked-in yet supple foundation for the fiery frontline. A compelling portrait of a rising saxophonist surrounded by top-tier talent, delivering spirited and technically assured hard bop and a formative chapter in one of jazz's most iconic careers.

Review: South London's Randy Valentine links with Walshy Fire and CHLLNGR - aka Copenhagen's Steven Jess Borth II - on Be The Good People, a seven-track patchwork of roots wisdom, warm-blooded instrumentation and cosmopolitan intent. Pulled together across three continents, the record stirs in horns, tape fuzz and soul harmonies, with a rotating crew including Morten McCoy, Jonathan Bremer, Rumpistol, Mikkel Hess and others from Denmark's deep jazz bench. Valentine, raised in Clarendon and known for sharp lyrical clarity and rich phrasing, stretches out here, less frontman than co-conspirator. Borth and Fire steer things loosely, with the mood swinging from meditative to open-armed. "Be the good people," as Valentine puts it, "before you be the great."

You Got It In Your Soulness
The Generation Gap
Review: One of soul jazz's most electrifying live recordings and a spontaneous triumph born from an unrehearsed, last-minute collaboration at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. Pianist and vocalist Les McCann, alongside tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Baileyiwho had never played together beforeideliver an exuberant, groove-heavy set that captures the raw energy of the moment. Despite the lack of preparation, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable and the resulting performance remains one of the most talked-about live jazz recordings. The set opens with 'Compared to What', McCann's politically charged anthem railing against Nixon and the Vietnam War, propelled by a relentless groove and impassioned vocals. The band locks into a deep pocket, with Harris and Bailey trading fiery, blues-inflected solos. 'Cold Duck Time' follows with an irresistible bounce, its bluesy vamp providing the perfect backdrop for extended improvisation. The mood shifts with 'Kathleen's Theme', where Harris takes center stage, exploring the melody with fluid grace before 'You Got It in Your Soulness' brings the session back to its gospel-infused roots, McCann's percussive piano stabs and Donald Dean's driving beat igniting the crowd. Decades later, Swiss Movement still exudes an infectious, unfiltered joyiproof that great jazz can thrive in the most unplanned circumstances. It's a high-spirited, deeply soulful document of musicians seizing the moment with dazzling results.

Review: Evergreen selector Gilles Peterson's long-running connection with Chicago's International Anthem is given a proper retrospective on this cracking compilation. Pulling from a decade of releases and handpicked via his BBC 6 Music and Worldwide FM broadcasts, the compilation echoes Peterson's curatorial instinct while celebrating the label's fiercely independent, genre-blurring spirit. Spiritual jazz, beat science, spoken word and ambient textures are all woven together with an effortless flow. An unreleased live cut from Worldwide FM adds a little intrigue, grounding the release in the global community Peterson has done much to champion. As part of the label's 'IA11' series, it's a nod to where International Anthem has come from and a signpost of what's still to come. Another reminder that man like Gilles is still listening closer than most.

Review: Compiled by expert knob twiddler and dedicated Parisian crate digger Maxime dB, the AirFunk Lounge Series Vol. 1 brings together 18 tracks from a broad cast of producers working between jazz-tinted electronics, laid-back house and slow-burn funk. The mood stays low-lit throughout, but the range is wide - from the off-kilter shuffle of Sweely's 'AirFrance' and Hostom's dubbed-out 'Beyond The Apex' to Greg Paulus' twilight reverie 'Sometimes It's About Us'. Contributions come from artists scattered across Europe and the Americas, including Parisian keyboardist Paul Cut, Buenos Aires-born Barem, Berlin's Markus Sommer and LA mainstay Adam Collins.

Five From '65: The Quintet Summer Sessions (180 gram vinyl 5xLP box set)
Cat: NEWLANDX 006. Rel: 12 Sep 25
Review: Cut over a single week in 1965, these five studio albums capture Chet Baker on the cusp of transformationinewly returned from Europe, his tone darker, his phrasing looser, yet unmistakably his. With George Coleman on sax and a fierce NYC rhythm section of Kirk Lightsey, Herman Wright and Roy Brooks, the sessions pulse with hard bop urgency. Tracks across Cool Burnin', Smokin' and Comin' On show Baker stripping back the polish of his West Coast period in favour of something more raw, human and soulfully fractured. Now remastered directly from the original mono tapes by Kevin Gray, the sound feels crisp and honestihighlighting both Baker's fragility and fire. An essential reissue that balances archival care with emotional immediacy and documents one of jazz's most mythic figures mid-unravelling.

Easy Evil
In The Name Of Love
Review: Tramp are one of Germany's smallest yet temerarious reissues imprints, balancing music by fresh acts with reissues over funk, soul, jazz, folk and Afrobeat. An instant wheelup from the label's recent tenth volume release of the Praise Poems series - which panned for 16 rare groove nuggets from 1970 to 1984 - comes in the form of 'Easy Evil', Kwartet Frits Kaatee's original recording from 1977. Frits Kaatee, the Dutch brass known for his clarinet and sax roles in the Dutch Swing College Band in the late 70s and early 80s, is perhaps best known for his North Sea Jazz appearances alongside vocalist Jeannette Cordee in 1988, who's heard with a pristine, boomily deep clarity here. The track and its counterpart 'In The Name Of Love' work well as salivary odes to temptation, licence and sin.

Safira
Review: Brazilian pianist and composer Dom Salvador returns with seven new tracks produced by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, continuing his long-standing dialogue between Brazilian rhythms and US soul-jazz traditions. The instrumentation stays rooted in acoustic textures, with arrangements that favour clarity and space over density. 'Os Ancestrais' opens with subtle rhythmic shifts and melodic restraint, while 'Nao Podemos O Amor Parar' and 'Debaixo da Ponte' lean more heavily into samba-inflected grooves. 'As Estacoes' slows the tempo, foregrounding piano against light percussion. 'Musica Faz Parte de Mim' and 'Minha Melanina' follow with slightly fuller arrangements, adding layered vocals and more defined harmonic movement. Closer 'Safira' finishes with a looping melodic figure, understated and tightly resolved. The production remains transparent throughout i clean without sounding polished, allowing Salvador's phrasing and compositional style to remain front and centre. It's a concise set that doesn't aim to update or reframe his legacy but simply to continue it on his own terms.

Italian Love Triangle
Review: Emerging from Reno, Nevada in 2009, Whatitdo Archive Group has quietly built a niche among collectors of rare soundtracks and obscure grooves. The trio - Alexander Korostinsky, Mark Sexton and Aaron Chiazza - combine their passions as composers, engineers and record enthusiasts to dig deep into forgotten musical corners. After 2023's Palace Of A Thousand Sounds now comes Exotique, again an Amazonian amazement of mid-Century library repros and Near East orchestral funk fusions, filtered through the asperous Nevadan temperament shared between them.

You're A Good Sport Charlie Brown (Soundtrack) (50th Anniversary Edition)

Review: LMFP celebrates the 50th anniversary of You're A Good Sport, Charlie Brown with the first-ever release of Vince Guaraldi's complete soundtrack, set uniquely to 12" 45rpm zoetrope vinyl - the zoetrope extends up from the disc's circumference, animating a scene from the TV special, thus uniting sound and vision in full stroboscopic effect. Originally scored for the 1975 Emmy-winning Peanuts special by Charles Schulz, the record offers 14 soundtrack pieces plus unheard Peanuts cutting floor material, freshly mixed from the original 2" session tapes and mastered in high-bit, pristine sound. Guaraldi's iconic piano patters are heard accompanied by Seward McCain on electric contrabass, Mark Rosengarden on drums, and conducting by John Scott Trotter. Bonus tracks are also included, with unused opening cues and selections from Guaraldi's 1974 film Bicycles Are Beautiful.

On The Beach
Motherhood
Review: Self-released in the early 1970s and now back in circulation, On The Beach finds Chicago-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, and former Sun Ra Arkestra member Philip Cohran expand the spiritual jazz blueprint he helped form as part of his fellow Afrofuturist dust giant's inner-ringed orbit. By now in the thick of his own solo endeavours, Cohran had brought the electric kalimba or "space harp" to Ra's Angels And Demons At Play, and it resurfaces here as the textural and melodic anchor of his Artistic Heritage Ensemble. The album's slow-burning grooves and modal spirals nod to Ra's Tiny Pyramids, though On The Beach moves with its own ceremonial stillness. Cohran was architect-engineer of Afrocentric jazz in the Midwest underground, and this is also a timeless mantelpiece of the Black Power movement, owing to the parallel fact of Cohran having helped found the Association For The Advancement Of Creative Musicians the very same year it was released.

Review: First we had Lola Young with 'Messy', and now we've Laufey with 'Silver Lining'. It seems that, in 2025, relationships gone sour are the main source of inspiration! Here the Icelandic singer-songwriter leans back into music hall jazz, swerving and dodging bullets through "go to hells" and other gotcha moments in the lyrics. But vindictiveness isn't the main meal, as Laufey also considers this moment paramount for self-reflection, contrasting her otherwise ruelessly resplendent Vingolf full-length, A Night At The Symphony: "this time, I was interested in seeing how I could draw out the most flawed parts of myself and look at them directly in the mirror."

Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Tanchame"
Review: This vinyl-only survey refracts Okinawan folk traditions through vivid jazz-funk and big band arrangements, creating a prismatic, highly listenable archive of Japan's southern soul. Kiyoshi Yamaya's influence runs deep, his arrangements glowing with cinematic elegance on 'Ryukyu Miyabi 2' through to the festival-like drive of 'Ryukyu No Matsuri 1'. The percussive triptych 'Nishinjo-bushi/Asadoya Yunta/Tanchame' shifts with deft energy, while his solo pieces like 'Ryukyu No Sora' feel airier, almost impressionistic. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys stir big band verve into 'Tanchame-bushi' and 'Hatoma-bushi', while Minoru Murayama's 'Asadoya Yunta' leans more contemplative. Kifu Mitsuhashi's takes on 'Tanchame' and 'Asadoya Yunta' feel grounded in breath and space, balancing the brassier moments with shakuhachi-led intimacy. The sequencing cleverly blurs the line between groove-heavy reimagination and respectful homage, shaping a dialogue that's rhythmic, emotive and alive. A treasure trove for collectors of Wamono, Asian jazz and crossover rarities and a striking monument to the genreless fluidity of folk, when placed in the right hands.

Path Of Man
Review: New York-based producer Leroi Conroy returns after an eight-year gap with a jazz-laced two-tracker steeped in deep boom bap heritage. 'No Return' opens with crisp, dusty drums that nod to mid-90s East Coast styles, but it's the instrumentation that elevates things-Michael Sarason (of Say She She) weaves a soulful flute line across the beat, while Cincinnati harpist Rachel Miller adds a glistening edge that recalls Dorothy Ashby at her most cosmic. On the flip, 'Path Of Man' slows the pace slightly, stretching out into a more meditative head-nod zone, full of subtly layered textures and introspective mood. Both tracks are short, sharp, and packed with character-tight enough for DJs, rich enough for headphone repeat listens. A strong return from a slept-on name.
