  8. Wir (6:22)
Review: It would be fair to say that "On A Different Note", the debut album from long-serving German producer Andreas Werner, has been a long time coming. Astonishingly, it's been 15 years since he first started exploring the deeper side of techno and tech-house under the Audio Werner alias, making the album a genuine 'event' release. Happily, it more than lives up to the hype, with Werner offering up a fine selection of melodious and atmospheric, club-ready cuts and occasional forays into intoxicating, otherworldly, beat-free territory (see the weird and spaced out "Es". Highlights include life-affirming opener "Ohne", the 13-minute deep tribal techno jam "Vogel" and the inspired ambient techno outing "Alter", which has echoes of Biosphere's 1993 cut "Baby Satellite".

Review: Benjamin Brunn and Dave Wheels are old studio buddies, having worked together on and off since 2006. "2000", though, is their most ambitious joint project yet: a collaborative album for Sushitech that offers up breezy, melodious and cheery fusions of heady dub techno, gentle electronica, chugging sofa-friendly haziness and glitchy late night hypnotism. It's an interesting blend but one that certainly hits the spot. Highlights include the horizontal pulse of "Orainge", the wonderfully hypnotic after-hours throb of "Iratamoto (Version)", the bold and sun-kissed undulations of "In The Club" and the pie-eyed warmth of "Waldeck".

Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere II
Cat: SUSH 52. Rel: 14 Dec 20
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Jin Choi - "High Quality Schal" (Baby Ford remix)
  2. Sten - "Circles"
  3. Mark Broom - "Gira"
  4. Edward - "Sender"
Review: The second instalment in Yossi Amoyal's Fluere compilation run brings further leftfield house and techno delights into one place, in honour of Sushitech's 15th anniversary. First up on this 12" is Baby Ford's impeccable remix of Jin Choi, which adds extra layers of drama to Ford's trademark minimal clicks and pops. Sten's 'Circles' is a pristine, dubby tech house workout, while Mark Broom's 'Gira' sounds all the better for a modern remaster 25 years after its original release. Edward's 'Sender' finishes the record off on a nervy, unsettled note where lingering off-key tones hover over a dense and twitchy minimal beat.

Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere I
Cat: SUSH 51. Rel: 14 Dec 20
Minimal/Tech House
  1. GES - "Helmut Schmidt Plays Bach" (dub)
  2. Mathew Jonson - "Freedom Engine"
  3. Brawther - "Serpent"
  4. Benjamin Brunn - "A Rivulet In Paradise"
  5. GES - "Helmut Schmidt Plays Darius Milhaud"
Review: Sushitech's anniversary celebrations are centring around label boss Yossi Amoyal's impeccably curated compilation Fluere. Across a series of 12"s, Amoyal taps up big hitters and deep cover reaches alike to present something of a summation of the inspiration behind his fantastic label's sound. On here you get Jan Jelinek's experimental excursions as GES, Mathew Jonson's evergreen 'Freedom Engine', dynamic tech house from Brawther and shimmering beatless pulses from Benjamin Brunn. It's a unique approach that juxtaposes club tracks and experimental fare in an interesting way, and the quality remains infallibly high throughout.

Baseline 87 (Sushitech 15th Anniversary reissue)
Cat: SUSH 04.5. Rel: 26 Oct 20
Deep House
  1. Baseline 87' (6:46)
  2. Musik For The Dancefloor (6:24)
Review: The Sushitech festivities continue unabated with this bittersweet repress of an all-time classic from the much-missed Detroit figurehead Mike Huckaby. 'Baseline '87' ranks amongst his most fabled works, riding as it does around an irresistibly catchy square wave bass hook and one of those no-nonsense beats that the legendary producer did so well. For the sound of Huckaby in full flight though, 'Musik For The Dancefloor' on the flip soars thanks to the interplay between the pads and chords while retaining that steadfast focus. In memory of a true dance music hero, why not revisit a classic that should be comfortably sat in every record bag?

Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere Fatum
  1. Killer Loop - "Someone" (Juan Atkins remix)
  2. Terry Brookes - "Breaking Cycles"
  3. MSL - "Limits Of Likeness"
Review: The Sushitech label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi Amoyal has put together the Fluere compilation across four discs, plus this extended fifth part, titled Fatum. Juan Atkins' remix of 'Someone' by Killer Loop takes up residence on the A-side of this three tracker, all swirling, warm pads and spiralling filters, the percussion almost leaning towards disco with its syncopated handclaps, although the overall effect is as shiny and futuristic as you would expect from this Detroit legend. Flip it over for Terry Brookes' 'Breaking Cycles', a calm spoken word narration providing a meditational mantra to accompany the chugging house foundations, full of gentle tease. 'Limits of Likeness' by MSL completes the package with restless electro machinations and shifting clouds of synth floating across its horizon. Sheer bliss all round.

  7. Interference (feat Christopher Ledger) (6:52)
  8. Closer (feat Ricardo Villalobos) (7:45)
Review: Steve O'Sullivan has been a prolific collaborator around the deep techno and minimal scene for a long time now, and he really hammers that point home with this expansive new project on Sushitech. Across eight tracks, the Mosaic maestro teams up with artists ranging from premier league titans like Ricardo Villalobos and Brawther through to emergent talents such as Soela and Ben Buitendijk. Each guest artist brings their particular slant to their track, but O'Sullivan's overarching deepness is the glue that binds the release together in a swirl of dubby pads. The results are consistently classy, but you knew that already right?

  8. Home Alone (feat Soela) (4:19)
Review: Ever the enthusiastic collaborator, Steve O'Sullivan follows up the first volume of his Dimensions series on Sushitech with another eight stunning partnerships which read like a who's who of contemporary techno. The artists invited span a fair range, from established legends like Mark Broom and Steve Rachmad to inspiring newer artists including Exos and Soela. The whole release hangs together naturally as O'Sullivan's signature dub techno touch slips in amongst the approaches of his chosen sparring partners. From nervy immersion heaters to starry-eyed reveries, this is sophisticated modern techno at its finest, with every track precision engineered to work in the club and take the crowd somewhere very special indeed.

  2. The Shadow (feat Thomas Melchior) (10:50)
  3. Beneath The Surface (feat Dana Ruh) (11:45)
  4. Healing Spirals (feat Soela) (9:20)
Review: As if the first two volumes of the Dimensions series weren't enough, Steve O'Sullivan is back on Sushitech with a final Parallels addendum to the collaborative series. On this occasion, the double vinyl set is reserved for four special longform mixes which let the ideas roll out in a truly hypnotic style. Of course, that's exactly how Ricardo Villalobos likes it and 'Short Circuit' tangles up beautifully in a mesh of interlocking rhythmic hiccups and immersive pads. Thomas Melchior holds down a sweet sustained groove for O'Sullivan's illustrious melodics on 'The Shadow' before Dana Ruh helps strip things down even further on the murmuring 'Beneath The Surface'. Soela pops up once again on 'Healing Spirals', lending a delicate and intricate touch which rounds the release off in beautiful, understated style.

Review: SIT, short for Sideways Invisibility Theory, is the collaborative project of Vlad Caia and Cristi Cons. As two scene leaders of the Romanian minimal phenomenon, both artists have proven over many years to have a unique vision for creativity and fresh approaches in what can be a homogenised scene. Of their many achievements, on their Amphia label as much as elsewhere, this album on Sushitech stands as one of their finest moments. As with all the best Romanian minimal, it's also still hotly in demand, making it a welcome addition to Sushitech's 15th anniversary pressing marathon. From dub tech laced rollers to gossamer-light trippers, this is the classiest end of the minimal tech house game from two artists with the vision to push things a little bit further.

Review: REPRESS ALERT LIMITED 180 GRAM VINYL!: Sushitech toast 15 years with a plush new edition of one of the label's classic albums. Delano Smith hit a high watermark with An Odyssey when he first dropped it in 2012, and it still sounds utterly flawless as a shining example of Detroit house. From the slinky funk of 'Survival' to the minimalist dub inflections of 'Trust In Someone', this is the positively classy end of the club music spectrum. At all times a sturdy rhythm section carries the tune, whether it be the shuffling hats of 'Midnight Hours' or the shimmering jack of 'No Turning Back', but the real prize here is the seductive mood Smith weaves throughout all 11 tracks. Looped up and hypnotic, but with each piece telling its own unique story, this is a masterclass in deepest house music.

Review: Delano Smith is one of the absolute OGs of Detroit techno, active in the scene since the 80s but always half a step to the side of the spotlight. His sound has reached many different moods and intensities over the years, but this Detroit Lost Tapes collection on Sushitech has to rank amongst the finest things he's done. As you'd expect for Sushitech, who are re-releasing this album to help toast 15 years as a label, the mood is subtle and hypnotic, balanced somewhere between techno and house without going anywhere near tech house. Sleek, refined, hypnotic and soulful, this is Smith at his very best.

  1. Delano Smith - "Constellation"
  2. Norm Talley - "Detroit 2-Step"
Review: Sushitech continue to celebrate the depth and breadth of their catalogue with another 15th anniversary reissue in the form of this surefooted two-tracker from Delano Smith and Norm Talley. This is the sweet spot where Detroit house and Detroit techno intertwine, leading in with the dreamy haze and steady trucking groove of 'Constellation'. 'Detroit 2-Step' has a spicier demeanour which artfully merges sultry sax with an ear-snagging riff which sounds organic and metallic all at once. Again, the groove is locked down and impossible to shake off course, making this heady club tackle for those who want to season their set with some of the finest rollers in the game.
