The Final Frontier
Entering Quadrant Five
Base Camp Alpha 808
Review: Underground Resistance reissue 'The Final Frontier', one of many lesser-spotted records to emerge from the many subterranean bore-holes they'd dug under Detroit, pre-1995. Produced under the UR namesake by the momentarily errant Mad Mike Banks, 'The Final Frontier' opens with a titular acid skipper, not long before a mathematically-minded ascender *avant la lettre*, 'Entering Quadrant Five', hears blooping, arpy, archic counterpoints arise, layer on layer, as if we'd taken flight aboard a starship, and now find ourselves accelerating against the flow of a cosmic cataract. The B offers a vision of meanwhile, beaming us down to 'Base Camp Alpha 808', which hears a comparatively Promethean fusion of hand drum and drum machine.

Review: Roll out the linoleum for breakdancin' in the streets to Soul Jazz's expertly curated Electro Throwdown: Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack on Planet Earth 1982-89. The compilation documents a distinct period of prolific creativity and sonic futurism, delivering thirteen body-rockin' classics, obscurities, and deep cuts from the '80s. Leading the charge is Professor X's 'Professor X (Saga)', outlining his self-referential bodypopping beat manifesto in sound, while certain other emblematic come procured by originators like The Rickie Clark Company, Jonzun Crew, Mo-Jo, The Troids and Jazaq. Harking to a time when the only prerequisite for rocking a crowd was a TR-808 and a sense of groove, we're more than happy to be beamed back.

Review: Some records just keep on selling out no matter how many times they appear. This is one of them. It is getting another run this year because second-hand copies are now worth well over 150 quid, and it still sounds as good as ever. Carl Finlow is an electro wizard who never fails to cook up captivating sonic spells and that's what he does here across two cuts - the frosty and turbulent 'Conduit' and the more lithe and silky 'Hashtag'. Volsoc's Orange Problem remix and a rework from the one and only Radioactive Man close out this brilliant 12".

Review: Marco Lazovic shows his jazzy electro side with this new outing on Scruniversal. It's a sixth EP from this label and another one you need to cop. The A-side tune is 'Amour Translanatique' and is one doused in romantic pad work, reverential moods and gentle drums that soothe the mind, body and soul. 'Uslada' is more upbeat but no less deft and silky. This one has lush cosmic chords and wispy melodies peeling off the busy beats which have a whiff of liquid jungle goodness to them. Two high-class cuts for tender dancefloors.

Review: DJ Stingray 313's 'INDUSTRY 4.0' is a contemporary dazzler from the enigmatic techno artist. Seemingly at once a lament of - and an embrace of - the modern manufacturing concepts that impact and even construct humanity's contemporary self-concept, this techniciously high-octane new EP wrenches our modern psyches by the collective ear and abrades it like an existential rasp. 'Large Language Model' pummels our sono-somas with jagged electrobass hellpits and the occasional robotic voice interjection - "machine learning" - while the second act, 'Multi Functional Robotics' and 'Sensor Data', moves even less predictably, exuding aneurysms of wonky mindmelt toplines turned assembly lines gone maliciously sentient turned rogue. The music plays back like a forbidden dossier of infohazards; terrifying AI trade secrets you weren't meant to see or hear.

Review: Finnish electro duo Morphology - comprised of Matti Turunen and Michael Diekmann - release 'Made Up Reality' on Deeptrax Records. Deeptrack quest to deliver high-quality, groundbreaking electronic music, focusing on the deeper side of electronica and eclectic leftfield. And what with a name like Morphology, you're bound to know what you're in for, before the letter: mathematic, abstracted dance sound, as of a pure topological hypospace; not that of the actual world of content and meaning in which we live. Four polyhedral calculations and cross-sectional computations come in various mutable forms, metamorphing from form to form to form with a relentless verve: the coldest of which is 'Particle Swarm', a sonic semblance of pixy qubits and shifty, latticed shapes.

Bluer Than Ever
Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Review: Fresh from AirFunk comes their fourth V/A sensationalism. Exuding an irresistible mixture of acid jam, funky electro and galactic grit, and punctuated throughout with a sophisticated pop sensibility, this is a dance record whose ambit is worthily tempered by fine nuances. 'Kitt' glistens thereabouts with its squeezy and detuned string hits, while 'Met U In Miami' offers an overdriven phono-fantasy of a Miami-born liaison. Paul Cut's 'Down' is the most riveting, with its spacious dynamics and rambo staccatos, while the closing SNR remix of 'Aztech' synthesises an ancient modern technology, one that encompasses time travel and beatcraft in one fell swoop.

Review: Unsettling dark-lectro by young Uruguayan producer Molen, debuting for the label Forma Y Contenido. Like that ineffable set of spooky microscopic actions which are only observable at a distance, opener 'Temblor' lands us in an expository state of in-betweeny uncertainty; we really aren't sure where we find ourselves on receiving this opener, with its laconic but commanding vocals and slamming snares. 'Presagio' divines the future with juddering sixteenths and teased melodies, while 'Primer Aviso' slows the pace to a chug, continually unnerving the listener with its swirly tops. Finally, 'A Duras Penas' disturbs the dream even more so, through swirling kickless portions and Reesey scoop-outs.

As is often the way with music as quality and neat as this, they keep a generally low profile but their edits are deft and crispier-than-crisp, with their instrumentals - here titled simple 'Boogie A' and 'Boogie B' - sounding production-sharp enough to cut glass. Bordering on freestyle and funk, these are short slices of beat dazzlement, and also function as perfect songwriter fuel too.

Review: French producer Lingo launches their imprint Lingo Tools with a decisive helmer, 'Lingo Tools 001'. Landing somewhere squarely between breakbeat, hip house and jam-out acid propulsions, we're first met with 'Push Da' System' - which brings a finger-on-the-button, Beastie Boys-styled vocal line to a stabbing rave blow-cutter - while 'Never Say Never' moves straighter and buzzier. B-sider 'The New Sound' finds confidence in transitory quadruple claps and injunctions to usher in the new sonic world order; finally, 'Moonwalk Like Me' prostrates itself on an astral geyser of sound, with a central arp-ing, melodic tessellation showering off the tune like meteoric detritus.

Review: Both we and Gosub are the beneficiaries of this loving reissue of 'Low Volume Lovers', a classic electro EP released on the Frustrated Funk label in 2005. With updated artwork and remastered audio, this one's a nimble and tricksy electrifier, working in many a high-voltage drum snap and alternating-current impact, around quirky melodies and flighty beats. We kick off on the Zyklonic 'Earth Recompile', which unfurls about a central sixteenth window-washer synth - which occasionally self-destructs, desponding itself of its rhythmic integrity at points - whilst the ensuing 'Low Volume Lovers' moves more melodic; then, B-siders provide obversive contrast, with 'Lost In Our Ways' continuing the uptempo plod, and 'Waking Up' offering a spaced-out downtempo beats coda, with sci-fi motifs.

Each track here explores strong visions of classic sounding bands - 'Plama 1' is pure electro post-punk that infuses a bit of EBM and techno while 'Plama 2' has echoes of New Order's Confusion. We especially like 'Plama 3' with the slower electro funk that sounds like a mix of Severed Heads, Chris & Cosey and Throbbing Gristle and 'Plama 4' sounds like some kind of YMO outtake. If these are any sign of what's to come, than Shades Of Blur will be a label to look out for.

Review: Craigie Knowes has solidified its standing as a label synonymous with quality electro and techno releases. Known for its consistent ability to unearth and champion fresh talent, the label's latest addition, Obergman's Pentaquark EP, continues this tradition with commendable flair. This new offering, marked by its distinctive blend of classic electro and modern dance floor sensibilities, is a testament to Craigie Knowes' keen ear for cutting-edge sounds. The EP opens with "Quasiparticle," where a melodic hook resonates with echoes of "Blue Monday." Its crisp, metallic quality and syncopated rhythm create a hypnotic effect that is both captivating and rhythmically engaging. Following this, "Omega Centuri" delivers a satisfying dose of acid-infused, chugging beats that cater to the needs of any club environment. On Side B, the title track "Pentaquark" presents a dark, spooky acid bassline, showcasing Obergman's skill in blending eerie atmospheres with classic acid sounds. Finally, "Cuspy Halo Problem" rounds off the EP with its crunchy drums and a similarly dark, acid-tinged vibe. The Pentaquark EP is a fine addition to Craigie Knowes' roster, reinforcing the label's reputation for releasing high-quality, innovative electronic music. Obergman's latest work is a prime example of the label's commitment to pushing the boundaries of the genre while maintaining a solid connection to its roots.

With six direct, subcutaneous, isotopic injections of the same alkaline sonic formula by the artist, 'Binary Pair', we hear 0s and 1s filter themselves into our bloodstreams and brains, overriding any possibility of probabilism, compatibility or free will. Nay, sheer metallic, plastoskeletal objectivity whiles away enough on the OG tune, while even sturdier and more menacing highlights take form especially in Code Rising and DVS's remixes.

Review: The first record in a new series of VA releases, 'Constellations Vol. 1', features Zeta Reticula, LUZ1E, Serge Geyzel, Aura Nox, Vertical67 and Ufaze. 'Dial That Number' opens with vanguard skirmishes of buckshot FM bass and sonic warmongery, a robo-voice superegoically charging the listener with a command to "dial that number" amid bloopy sonic ratiocinations and momentary forgoings of bass. Luz1e's 'Data Motions' recalls the scope and intensity of the recent DJ Stingray 313 release, with its titular musings on data fungibility and capture proving apt to the track's metallic snares and full-bodied gnarls. Geyzel's track moves more electric and playful, record scratches and synth piques-and-jerks galore. The B-siders move more barren and ruinous, with planetarily stacked cairns of bass layering, girding and trussing the mixes of 'Non Stop Overstimulation' (a tautology if you think about it) and 'Tear Down Those Walls'. Finally 'I Should Have Known' sounds more conclusive, its sense of finality and solubility helped along by snares and kick transients that, rather than merely contrasting them, seep into the track's overall dystopian smog.

Review: ile Flottante is Mr. Beatnick's fith album, following 2023's Joy In Variation (including the notorious cover of 'Love On A Real Train'), and his well-received, off-beat collaboration with London-based avant-garde agitator Richard Greenan: Coasty. This is his first contribution to the International Feel trademark; the record draws its name from the national French staple pudding enjoyed on Mr. Beatnick's childhood holidays, also being a jeux de mot (pun) for "floating island". With fantasy visions of self-suspensory lands held firmly in mind, we launch ourselves into a bristling eight-track record, breezily nodding along to the rhythmic snowfall detailed on 'Crystal Snowflakes' and the impossible aerial beaches of 'Low Tide'. A truly fantastical sonic landscape; in a realm of floating landmasses, do dolphins still dance? Mr. Beatnick seems to say yes.

Review: Georgian producer Toke follows up his Batter Down debut 'Calm Before The Storm' with a second dance musical rabbit-holer on 12", 'Sacral Dance'. Toke cleverly uses his titular words to cognise the link between the sacred and the pelvic; indeed, booty-shaking is a ritual, transcendent act: the title track throws us headfirst into the cult-space, with its short electro bursts and middy FM hooks dancing jankily across a comical beat; such is the hypnotic formula that ensues on 'Light' and 'Therapy', which move more trancey and bombastic respectively. Finally, 'Jazz' ends on an ironic note, recalling not jazz but funk with its descendant lasershots and auto-licking synth bass.

Review: Aline Umber burst onto the scene in 2022 with a feelgood brand of deep house which takes its cues from all the best bits of the 90s, and their form remains strong on this latest drop. 'Down To Earth' has a hip-house flavour which will have you rapping along in no time at all, while 'Tell A Vision' leans on sentimental keys for a seriously emotive dose pitched at peak time. Maxime DB guests on the punch, acid-tinged 'Emergency', while Joachim Baumerder lends a hand on the instructive 'Doin' Acid'. If you need some upfront flavours to get the party juiced up good and proper, this is a must-check.

Review: With his nom de plume, producer Anoesis - returning to Cyphon Records - posits an age-old philosophical question. Are there forms of knowledge that we can access independently of consciousness? Besides perception of phenomena, and by the use of reason, how else can we know things? One answer is "anoesis", which is the reception of impressions or sensations - sensory input, pure qualia - by the brain, prior to any intellectual (aka. noetic) work being done. As a form of 'Metacognition', anoesis is innate, paralogical, and before reason; such motor inputs are exactly the kind that electro and its adjacent styles hope to simulate and stimulate. 'Vision Off' and 'Do Don't Don't Do' seem to reflect something of this latent potentiation of thought, with patterned, helical beats, and bouncy neuronal noises, seeming to represent the ludicrousness of the unconscious and somatic mind. 'New Style Of Life' just as oxymoronic - irrationally rational - proving that the dancing body also follows its own, paralinguistic form of reason; sci-fi, Forbidden Planet-style, billowing synth note ascensions blend with clacky hats and snares, representing the forward-facing yet untempered drives of such a precognitive, subjective mental state.

Review: 2TRCKRS offers their latest V/A, 'Pain', centring on the productive efforts of one Nulek. If anything, it's not just pain that's on offer here, rather than, at the very least, a masochistic kind of enjoyment that revels in the sonically dry and empty. 'Come Out At Night' brings up a cuspate post-punk/techno exercise, with risibly knowing, deep vocals delivering a kind of evil soliloquy in the between moments, one as unintelligible as it is maniacal. 'An Empty Life' and 'Dystopian World' follow, continually amping up the darkwave and spaceout elements with cavernous pedal verbs and lolling riffs, giving rise to another conclusively toothy denouement.

Review: Sicilian electro-contemporary Monica Venturella steps up for Sex Tapes From Mars' seventh outing, serving four acid-bleeding, delirious cuts. A1 'Talk Dirty 2 Me' is a masterclass in rhythmic finesse, navigating the delicate balance between the syncopated shuffle of two-step drumwork and the subterranean swell of an early 00s growlbass. Then 'Don't Think About It' forays through bouncy, playful energies underscored by a distinctively corrupt acid line, not long before 'Oh Shie' flaunts a deranged, bumpy groove on the flip. Layers soon unfold with intricate detail, bespeaking the record's jilted finale, 'Espionage', which begins with a filmic, detuned set of vintage synth swells before dropping into no less than a seminal standout joyride in greezy waft. Verberating bleeps, clever pitch play and raunchy vocal stabs join in on the trip.

Go Off Break
Review: Snappy breakdance come electro from Kid Ginseng, 'I Go Off', the third in a series of samply 12"s retrograding the inimitable sound of the diskette floppy disc, and its timely usage throughout the 80s and 90s in cities like Detroit, LA and New York. Channelling an 8-16 bit sound - and influenced by DJs Di'jital, Arabian Prince, and the LA X-Men - the centring of these influences is undeniably the instrumental Techno Hop label; Ginseng truly does go off on one in response to their legacy, with the title track forcing us to spit out the teabag with an abrupt "ptooey", in light of its spicy choral samples and bitty acid line. The runner-ups 'Romancing The Droid' and 'Konstrukt' also offer variable takes on the Techno Hop sound, the former especially bringing a downtempo proto-industrial hip-hop jaunt to an already totalised, militarised sonic zone.

Review: While most party DJs lament their wedding gigs while lauding their fun cool jobs, Wedding Acid Group - the openers of this latest V/A by Undersound Recordings - marks a point of going beyond mere cultural Stockholm syndrome, not just making light of our matrimonial masters, but redirecting those cheugy energies into a killer beatific-corrosive intro.AThen come three more riveting uplifts of a blissful and bouncey variety, from 'Do As I Say' by Albert Ess to 'Singlestranded' by Systelman to 'Love2' by J. Mono, seguing from industrial anvil clankage to a nightbus-bound house closer.

Inter27wined (Cottage mix)
Review: Dischi Nottetempo, based in Milan, welcomes a new artist to their roster, Caramel Chameleon (Francesco Pio Nitti), for a label-debut EP with which our ears may tussle and tarry for some time: 'Compact Demons'. Nitti will be known already to many, his fluid brand of braindance having already graced imprints like 030303 and Undersound's NOUN sublabel. This five-tracker continues the charge of heady braindance abstraction and hardboiled beats, proving unafraid of the contradicton of ludic depth, slaphappy apprehension, silly seriousness. In characteristic braindance fashion, 'd-_-b Future Is Blind' makes use of the briefest of ASCII art in the title, and sonically indulges lowriding bass and slickly rolling, generative woodblocks, a tributary use of breaks and digitalia to the tutelage of IDM if we've ever heard one. Shorter and snappier drivers like 'Inter27wined (Cottage mix)' provide similar degrees of mirth mixed in with ironic mendacity, the paradox of the music lying in its sense of sardonic sprightliness.

Review: Cruz returns to Griffe with the new EP 'La Pasion Paga', delivering a wicked set of five elements in the form of neon-drenched electro and wearable wetware Italo. The title track throws us into an extrasensory fervour, serving visions of streaklit motorbikes burning phosphenic light trails onto our retinas, be this due to the various LED filter-cutoff stabs, flash-photo gated snares or two-tone melodic glow discharges heard thereupon. 'Music Addicted' furthers this sense of lubricious but psychotic drive, as we're continually bewitched and bedazzled by murderous murmurations and piquant flicks and guttural saws, glued by the clever working of police sirens into the mix's distance. B-sider 'Always My Illusion' finds a moment of brief respite, deploying a detuned synth xerogel that glues each otherwise sparse, janky electro element into a well-soldered prosthetic. 'Los Atajos Del Delirio' builds on similar themes of futural disillusion, yet ramps things up to yet another accelerative exponent, ending on a juddering but bittersweet note of finality.

Review: According to musician Calagad 13, we have reached an advanced stage of development where the manifestation of growth of all life is under the control and management of artificial intelligence. Whether this is factually correct or merely a cultural amusement is irrelevant; its very uncertainty is what lends its use a definite gravitas. It's also the kind of statement that helps desirously package wicked dystopian electro EPs, such as 'Inner Revolution' here. Calagad 13 lays down his most explicitly personal work to date; six electro coups land shocking respective psychic blows, 'Moksha' to 'Chaos' growing increasingly vocoded and bellicose in their electro judders and dry sorties, amounting to not just an outer, but inner, war.
