Ultraviolet Freqs EP
  1. Doors Of Perception
  2. Ultraviolet Freqs
  3. Look Into The Mind
  4. The First Anura Ever Known
Review: Guy Contact is up next on Craigie Knowes with more of that, plush, trance-licked party clobber he's been slipping out on Butter Sessions and the like. After the resounding success of his debut LP and another two EPs to boot, it's already been a busy year for the Perth-based producer, but he's sounding as inspired as ever on these four solid club constructions. The acid lines wriggle their way through 'Ultraviolet Freqs' and 'Look Into The Mind' but they're rounded off in the smoothest of fashion, making this a surefire all-rounder of a 12" for all manner of party situations.

Review: Two decades ago, Drexciya's Gerald Donald released his sole album as Japanese Telecom, Virtual Geisha, on the electroclash-flavoured International Deejay Gigolos label. Like much of Donald's work, which of course is inherently futuristic and otherworldly in tone, the set has aged well. It's full of punchy electro beats, bold Kraftwerkian melodies, fuzzy bass and starry electronics, offering a more stripped-back and occasionally funky take on the more layered and thematically complex Drexciya sound. Our picks of a very strong bunch include 'Mounting Yoko', the bubbly and picturesque Far East electro of 'Virtual Geisha She Interacts' and the cheery, lo-fi gorgeousness of 'Pagoda of Sin'.

Review: Paul Hammock has been prolific over the past couple of years as his brand of lush, heady electro catches the ears of every label worth mentioning. Furthur Electronix, Unknown To The Unknown, Lunar Disko, 20:20 Vision - there aren't many of the key electro labels of the day who haven't carried his work recently, and now Craigie Knowes are doing the right thing and offering up another four pristine jams from the studio. There's mellow melancholy hovering in each of these tracks, but never at the expense of the crisp 808-esque machine funk. Mixing danceability with emotional heft, Hammock proves he can do no wrong when he dons his Cignol cap and gets busy with his gear.

  4. Robotic Lusien
Review: After the recent first drop on Orbital Frequencies, Keith Farrugia is back with more of his Maltese Sound Synthesis to round out 2021 in style. This is dark and sinewy electro from a dystopian future, dealing in low-blowing bass synths and creepy vocoders aplenty. 'Biological System' has more than a whiff of early Dopplereffekt about it, and that's no bad thing, while 'Primary Functions' sounds like it could comfortably land in a set alongside some of the moodier gear from Breakin' Records. 'I See You Looking At Me' has a tasty dose of acid tipped into its eerie space soup, and 'Robotic Lusien' finishes the record off with an uneasy creeper that even teases the tiniest slither of breaks into the mix.

  1. Phantom

  3. Screw Driver
  4. Young Street
Review: With a name like Sleep D one might mistakenly assume that this Australian duo produces mid tempo sounds to drift away on. Greasy Beats and Blobs Vol. 1 proves otherwise. For their inaugrual appearance on Cocktail d’Amore we find a selection of warped and slippery sounds mounted onto a skeleton of body shaking rhythm. Phantom opens the record without hesitation launching into sci fi soundscapes and electro inspired beats. Airbags feels like anything but a safe landing as it shape shifts during its runtime without ever losing its sense of urgency to dance. On the B-side we are offered up two very different pieces of electronic bliss. Screw Drive does exactly as the name implies as the incessant bass line digs deeper into your mind and drives you out into the middle of nowhere as lush pads evolve Into burst of cosmic radiation. Young Street perfectly closes the selection with a meditative embrace filled with micro sounds floating in and out of the stereo field urging you to come back down to earth.

Review: Periodica International marks a brilliant debut here with a collaborative EP that pairs Daniel Monaco with MC Matsui. Between them the duo cook up some nicely esoteric, tropical and exotic ocean-side Balearic disco grooves. Playful and funky, filled with library references, neat bass riffs and hook vocals. 'Swimming With Turtles' is a spaced out disco groove that takes you to the Mediterranean coast on a fusion of elector and hip hop beats. 'Swimming With Dolphins' is ever more upbeat and funky and sure to be a big hit with all manner of Balearic DJs. A vital 7" for sure.

Review: Lloyd Stellar X The Droid - Rise of the Machines is an exciting debut collaboration between Erik Griffioen & Ben Evans. An impressive EP, loaded with cutting edge electro brimming with musicality, sound design and expert production.

Kicking off the release comes the title track 'Rise Of The Machines', this quirky yet nuanced excursion sets the pace, allowing it's nifty ricocheting sequences, slick 808s, and tripped out ear candy to hit the clubs. 'Prisoners features a wiggly bass led jam, plastered with synths and finished with a dash of vocoded vocals.

Onto the flip side - 'Room And Pillar' grabs the bull by the horns with a tough and aggressive bass line driven banger. Shrieking, twisted synth lines and FX are shattered across the track, keeping tension levels peaking, while TR808 rhythms cut through with military precision. Contrasting 'The Neutral Zone' sucks us into a deep atmospheric orbit of blissful yet inquisitive FM synthesis, distant emotive pads, fortified by warm stately bass tones.

Review: The Exit Planet Earth series continues with the first ever collaboration between two undisputed electro-funk heavyweights Egyptian Lover & Soul Clap. Egypt knows how to rock the TR 808 like no other and has been a true player on the LA electro scene since 1984. While Soul Clap have forged their unique E-Funk sound coming out of New York City as part of the Crew Love collective. The resulting track 'Hai Karate' is a slice of superbly produced classic electro designed to rattle bass bins from Miami to Mars.
Following form in classic electro directions, Futurenauts present their debut track 'We are the Futurenauts' that brings a slower based groove reminiscent of 'A Love from Outer Space' into the cosmos and delivers a powerful message to humanity. The flip sees a welcome return to 20/20 Vision from the Maltese magician Sound Synthesis who continues the vocoded vocals but adds a state-of-the-art assault on the senses with a slamming track aimed firmly at the discerning dancefloor. EPE 08 is finished off in fine style by Mick Wilson & August Artier with 'Akira's Cry', which fuses a deep house bassline and chords with tight break beat programming and powerful lead strings.

Review: Thanks to a swathe of superb EPs over the last few years for the likes of 2020 Vision, Lunar Disko, Further Electronix, Altered Sense and Unknown to the Unknown, long-serving electro producer Cignol is enjoying something of a career renaissance. As a result, some of his earliest releases have become in-demand and hard-to-find - hence this reissue of his long-overlooked, but utterly brilliant, 2010 debut album, Switching For a Living. Offering an attractive mixture of sci-fi seeped, far-sighted tracks informed by 1990s IDM, deep electro, downtempo, ambient and acid, it's a coherent but varied affair that has well and trily lasted the test and time - thanks, in part, to Cignol's intention to make it a genuine "listening album". Recommended.

Review: Since debuting on Echovolt Records back in 2016, Gennadiy Manzhos AKA Low Tape has released some exceptional material via labels such as X-Kalay, Eudemonia and Further Electronix. This outing on Bristol-based We're Going Deep may well be his best yet. A journey through properly deep electro territory, it's packed to the rafters with deep space pads, drifting electronic motifs, bubbly basslines and snappy machine drums. Choose between the hypnotic, Snivilisation-era Orbital style brilliance of 'Analog Electro' and 'Romancelectro' (very 'Semi-Detatched', and that's a compliment), the swirling, starfall melancholia of '13th Floor' and the acid-laced aural snowstorm that is 'Arctic Orbital Station'. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Nobody's Business re-release Kittin's first album, 'First Album', harkening to way back when the electroclash queen (Caroline Herve) formed one part of the duo Miss Kittin & The Hacker with Michael Amato. Perhaps it's time for an electroclash comeback, as we're no less keen on this album as we were back then. We're happily reminded of the hit popcorning single '1982', while between-the-beats coldness prevails on lesser-known cuts like 'Nurse' and 'L'Homme Dans L'Ombre', showing off the pair's near-sociopathically calculated sound. Also of note: this album's original release year, 2001, is to 2022 what 1982 was to it.

Review: Carl Finlow has produced an astonishing catalogue of music over a career spanning three decades, with his discography including hundreds of releases and remixes under a variety of monikers. 'Desequence' is the latest edition to Finlow's expansive productions and a masterclass in electronic music.

'Desequence' kicks off the record with a heavy dose of integalactic funk with interstellar beats rockin' over squelchy bass lines and razor sharp glitches. While 'Downstream' delivers a warped groove wrapped up in Finlow's intricate programming.

'Guttural' is an overwhelming assault of rapid fire elements, forming complex off kilter breaks littered with robotic licks and served over deep, low end bass. 'Wavefront' closes yet another impeccable addition to Finlow's highly accomplished works, with an off planet adventure through extraterrestrial soundscapes.

Review: Two years on from the release of his fine debut album, the electro-breaks and braindance flavoured Lucid Intervals on VOITRAX, Cyan85 delivers a more funk-fuelled, intergalactic electro sequel. Taking cues from a mixture of Drexciya's Gerald Donald, Egyptian Lover, DMX Krew and Jenson Interceptor, 0341 Gate offers an attractive mix of bouncy, club-ready beats, bustling bass, twisted riffs, heady spoken word snippets, alien-sounding melodies, throbbing synthesizer riffs, sharp Fairlight stabs and far-sighted, sci-fi seeped retro-futurist intent. Review: "Way back in the 1990s, Mark Hand, Neil Iceton & Jez Nicholl channelled their love of sci-fi-fired Motor City techno into a string of inspired releases under the alias Cubic Space Collective.

After reuniting for a memorable machine jam at Freerotation festival in 2016, Hand & Iceton headed back into the studio for a one-off session and recorded 'Holiday in Beta Centauri', a musical love letter to Mad Mike and the rest of Detroit's most militant futurist techno crew.

Sending us surging skywards via 'Binary System', where lilting lead lines, fizzing electronics and enveloping chords dance atop a snappy, cymbal-heavy drum machine rhythm, before 'Arps in Hyperspace' sees them step things up a notch via layered waves of synths, sparkling melodies and a driving, hyper-speed groove.

The North-East-based twosome then attempt to warm us to the core in the shape of 'Rigil': restless organ stabs, undulating Michigan bass, alien electronics, psychedelic acid lines and Galaxy 2 Galaxy style chords catching the ear. Bringing us gently back down to earth, they complete their deep space mission with 'Beyond The Nebula (Holiday in Beta Centauri)', a bustling electro number full of stabbing analogue bass, star-burst electronics, meditative ambient chords that shimmer full of night-sky melodies.

A fine return to action for this Teesside UR-loving techno twosome... 3,167 miles away in Detroit, their achievement will be noted."

On the 'LDN TWN' EP, they deliver two high-pressure wax cuts flipping grime on its angsty head. 'WCM 2 LDN' hears a glitzy nu-electro (or is it breakstep?) flip of Flowdan's 'Welcome To London', miring the rapstar's low-reg vocals in washy verbs and licking acid, while 'Won Sek' repurposes Mumdance & Novelist's eponymous hit '1 Sec' into a much-needed 2-step techers.

False prophets - Relpek A.K.A. Kepler is a DJ/producer who hails from the North of England. His offering is a crisp electro track that generates a calculated bass, analogue stabs and phrases with sweeping synths.

Thibo - Bronxy and ETRE from the Ukraine collaborate on this deep house affair, with soulful grooves, smooth deep bassline and "spacey vibe" pads create a cool hypnotic flow.

Inverted - Hydra Machine's music is influenced by 1980's electro. Deep 808 inspired beats meets an "Electro Funk" bassline, 80's style pads and acid bleeps combine together perfectly.

  3. Relinquish (John Shima remix)
  4. Close To Zero
Review: Mihail P brings us a 4 tracker, including a special John Shima remix. We start with the title track "Relinquish", a nice journey through deep space at a modest tempo. It features electro breaks rhythm patterns and harmonics to send you in to orbit. Following is "Shifting", a more acid tech vibe and straight 4/4 chugger, in line with proper Detroit / UK lushness from the 90's and forward. Flip to the B side for "Reliquish John Shima remix". It's hard to say which track is the peak, but this one's a contender. John Shima is known for his signature bleepy, but danceable sound. He adds layers of synth programming intelligence and great basslines as usual. Finally the B2 "Close to Zero" is the closing tune. Similar to the opener, we find more electro breaks, synth basses and a cool pad to complete the perfect journey.

Review: Always hot on the steel-hard plates and murky subterranean atmospheres, Public System turns in a haunted double package from the crypt. Spanning hi-octane indus bullets, half-baked mutant salvos and shadow-clad juicers from a host of reputed names and rabid underdogs, this new comp collates ruff’n’tuff joints from gritty techno don Container, genre-unbound explorer E-Saggila, Berlin’s electro arsonist Privacy, acid-spitting hydra DJ Loser x Penelopes Fiance, basement guerillero Yabboq Penuel alias Le Syndicat Electronique, neo-punk beat thrasher Crave, Yves Tumor collaborator and sine-wave crusher Anthem, expert circuit dissector Beau Wanzer, Liquid G as remixed by Mick Wills, Night Gaunt’s Lower Tar, occult machine funk preacher Maenad Veyl, DJ Chupacabras under new guise 110, soundwaves cross-pollinator DJ Richard, vibrant mood-scapist Gavilán Rayna Russom, as well as label boss Myn going ubiquitous with studio fellows Kluentah as Myntha, and R Gamble as Fade Accompli. A much desirable feast of raw, unhinged, all-round spine-tingling jams for the club and not.

Review: Some six years after debuting via a deliciously angular and energetic EP from Jaquarius and Mono-Enzyme 307, the Acid Avengers imprint notches up release number 20. Like most of the label's EPs, it's a multi-artist affair. Sometime Balkan Vinyl and Bass Assault artist Acidulant handles side A, bouncing between rushing, piano-sporting 1992 hardcore revivalism ('Super Rave'), sub-heavy deep electro haziness ('Save The Last Rave') and throbbing, arpeggio driven trance/breakbeat techno fusion ('Hauz Trax'). Voiron, who last graced the label back in 2016, takes over on the flip. The Paris-based producer first fuses glistening, spacey melodies, twisted acid lines, post-electro beats and dirty bass on 'Bon Kick Voiron', before opting for deep acid house on 'Digital Voiron Workstation' and atmospheric, Orbital-meets-'90s tech-house on 'Sugar Voiron'.

Review: Originally from France and now based in Berlin Isolated Material has dropped a steady run of heavy hitting releases on labels including; Brokntoys, Haws, Ukonx, 909 Connection and Mind Controlled Rectifier before joining us for his debut EP on 20/20 Vision.

'Hidden Node' kicks off the wax with a jarring excursion of futuristic breaks and abrasive sound design firing on all cylinders with complex drum patterns, bleeps and glitches. 'Asynchronous Funk' sees Isolated Material serve up an abstract slice of electro funk with a solid broken beat groove peppered with unexpected moments of off-kilter magic.

On the flip side - title track 'Hidden Node' offers up a dose of Drexciyan inspired funk primed for a set on the dark side of the moon with; high octane breaks, quick fire drum programming, intricate synth patterns and ominous undertones. Wrapping up the EP 'Unmarked Sequence' is an equally potent chaser for the wide eyed deep space traveller in need of body jerking breaks.

Review: Fools Gold serve up a mega limited 7" here that is pure dynamite for the club. It's a single from Small-town DJs featuring some big vocal work from the legendary Bootsy Collins. The bass is impossibly elastic and rubbery, bouncing about the mix with goey goodness. Add in slapping hits and big broken beat drums, withering sci-fi effects and some party-amping raps and you have a real crowd pleaser. The Adam Doubleyou & Nick Bike remix smooth things out and is a little bit more of a low slung funk sound.

Review: In 2018, unknown artist James Infiltrate dropped an album of smart electro tunes that get everyone talking. It turned out to be an alias of James Burnham aka Burnski aka the Constant Sound boss aka Instinct, who is one of the most visible and prolific artists of recent years. Now some of the cuts from that album get choice remixes - AlexJann flips 'Flash' into a caustic electro banger with bright synths and twisted bass. Stojche goes for a lurching, loopy, scintillating and loopy remix of 'Isolate' that takes you to the stars and the flip offers up an acid laced electro cruiser from Sound Synthesis and Relpek mix of 'Reconnect' that is melodic and mysterious.

Review: LDI Records welcomes a debutant for its fourth EP, and he comes all the way from Texas, which is not a state that crops up in many conversations about electro. But maybe it will now because the man clearly knows what he's doing as he proves across this sublime and varied collection. Right from the first moments of 'Voltage Anagnorisis' there is no doubting Terrestrial AccessNetwork's class: it's a cinematic and deeply emotive slice of icy electro before other cuts get more edgy and funky, deep and melancholic and fierce and twisted. Dutch electro technician Versalife even steps up for a remix full of crunchy machine textures, too. Superb stuff.

A milestone in any musician’s career, the LP illustrates the breadth of Rob’s tastes and influences, exploring the rugged terrain of planet electronica. Ranging from breaks and electro to house and techno, Battle of The Planets was made during lockdown, a period of creativity and isolation for many artists around the world. Across 10 skillfully produced cuts Rob takes us on an intrepid adventure into the cosmos, where mysterious atmospheres and uplifting melodies sit side by side with captivating dance floor rhythms. Many shades of his personality come through on this album, all tied together by his unique sonic identity; informed by his years spent on the dance floor, behind the decks and in the studio. On Battle of The Planets Robert James presents a distillation of his extensive knowledge and experience into one succinct, highly engaging body of work.
