Saving My Love
Cat: KM 058. Rel: 18 Oct 21
  1. Saving My Love (4:18)
Review: Adam Port, &ME and Rampa at team up with Little Dragon are quite the collaboration here on 'Saving My Love', a one track 12' where the deep house sound of Berlin collides with Swedish pop sensibilities. Proper mood music for late night basement parties, the Keinemusik trio's idiosyncratic style of bold, emotive and futuristic groove is the perfect backdrop to Yukumi Nagano's breathtaking vocals. Tip!

Intergalactic Friends EP
Intergalactic Friends EP (180 gram vinyl 12")

  1. The Science Of Happiness (7:33)
  2. Phone Sex (5:37)
  3. Sarah Tonin (8:35)
  4. I Got It (5:47)
Review: Following releases from Aladdin!, Mathijs Smit and more, Beeyou sublabel Subee comes back once again like the proverbial renegade master with some seriously pumped up tech house that very nearly teeters towards outright funky house, brought to you by Aerofunk. But don't be fooled, there's plenty of techy crunch in the drums on 'The Science Of Happiness' to balance out the slinky bass. 'Phone Sex' keeps things saucy and sleazy, with some bright chord stabs and a tough beat behind the heavy breathing, pillow talking samples. 'Sarah Tonin' is another sprightly, playful jam and 'I Got It' whips up a storm of broken beat drums that teases from the intro to the outro.

Now Darts The Spirit EP
Cat: HUDD 066. Rel: 22 Nov 21
  1. Poudre Aux Bleus (5:18)
  2. Pas Une Cacahuete (6:14)
  3. Reverse Shikata (5:29)
  4. Common Dissectors (6:55)
Review: Swiss producer Agnes has been a stalwart of the minimal sound since the mid noughties, although he's kept a fairly low profile in recent years. You can imagine how stoked we were to see a new release from him this week which is out on UK label Hudd Trax. He's no stranger to the label, and the Now Darts The Spirit EP is another worthy addition to the discography. From the stuttered micro house of 'Poudre Aux Bleus", to the evocative late night mood music of "Pas Une Cacahuete" and the sensuous slo-mo deepness of "Common Dissectors" on the flip - its classic Agnes all the way.

Robot Romance
Robot Romance (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AGR 002. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. Electric Nostalgia (7:17)
  2. Robot Romance (7:11)
  3. Fallin' (Transition mix) (7:09)
Review: David Agrella returns on his newly-minted Agrellomatica Records with three fresh interpretations of Robot Romance. Agrella is a DJ, producer and recording artist with a growing reputation as a versatile selector. Showcasing his musical inspirations across genres via his Agrellomatica slot on London radio station Bloop, the first release on his recently launched eponymous imprint gained support from artists including Moxie, Korea Town Acid and Jane Fitz, alongside high praise from the likes of Ransom Note, Vinyl Factory and Bolting Bits. Electric Nostalgia is an utterly addictive track that draws you in right from the start, as swirling synths and subby pads float above crisp breaks. Robot Romance slowly intensifies with fluttering chords that feel weightless, as the even kick drums meet an elastic bassline - providing a propulsive gem. Agrella's Transition Mix of Fallin', which closes the E.P comes with pummeling drums and muscular acidic melodies.

X17 (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: EG 01. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. X17 (8:56)
  2. X17 (Rhythm dub) (5:57)
  3. X17 (Viiibe) (6:14)
Review: Los Angeles-based DJ, producer and live-act Dave Aju has been turning out under the radar house sounds on labels like Circus Company and Mule Musiq for years. Now he has decided to go it alone with his own new imprint, Elbow Grease, which he has said will aim to be "genre-defiant." It launches with 'X17', which is said to have been recorded at G-Son Studios, the Beastie Boys' now-defunct studio, and features an array of electro, house and techno sounds. The original is a nice cosmic workout with crunchy hits, the dub is a bit fatter, deeper, more atmospheric, and the Viiibe mix is filled with lush keys.

Preamble EP
Cat: RWAY 001. Rel: 29 Nov 21
  1. The Arising Of The Phoenix (In Memory Of Mark Bartissol) (6:38)
  2. Running Out Of Thyme (6:34)
  3. Hey, Rube! (7:02)
  4. Pickled Beets (6:47)
Review: When cult Canadian Akufen (which is, fact fans, a phonetic spelling of acouphene, the French word for tinnitus) releases music, it doesn't hang around long. And it has been that way for decades now. This new one on Ourway will surely keep up that long tradition, offering as it does more timeless house minimalists and studio trickery. 'The Arising Of The Phoenix (In Memory Of Mark Bartissol)' is a deep house groove with heavenly melodic loops that cast your mind free from this world. 'Running Out Of Thyme' offers a wonky, jerking beat to make you move your feet and the pixelated pads of 'Hey, Rube!' bring scintillating texture, while 'Picked Beats' is a darker, dubbier closer.

  7. David Swatten - "Wave Energy" (6:37)
  8. David Swatten - "Wave Energy" (John Beltran remix) (5:32)
Review: Since launching in 2018, Aaron Andrew's Chubby label has become a trusted - if frustratingly irregular - source of high-quality deep house. Their latest missive, the Aussie imprint's first release since the autumn, is their most expansive yet, with four fresh cuts (each with an accompanying remix) stretched across two slabs of wax. Aleqs Notal goes ultra-deep on immersive and hypnotic opener 'Planetary Insanity', which is subsequently given an equally spacey revision courtesy of Life Recorder. Cheerier and breezier deep house warmth comes courtesy of Jose Rico's 'Agonias' and Leonids slightly darker revision, while Nail's squelchy, early morning take on Ewan Jansen's bubbly 'Basillica' is one of the EP's standout moments. Arguably best of all though is John Beltran's gorgeous revision of David Swatten's brilliantly bittersweet 'Wave Energy'.

  2. Promise Me Love (feat LaRonn Dolley - Just One remix) (7:22)
  3. In A Better Way (Change) (6:15)
Review: Detroit's Malik Alston has many different talents that include everything from singing and producing to DJing and performing poetry, He has serve dup many classic sounds before now and here finds himself on Mother Tongue with more of his raw and impassioned house grooves. First up is a Soul Power mix of 'In A Better Way' that pumps a warm house vibe, with spiritual vocals and expressive jazz keys. 'Promise Me Love' is another fine vocal performance that casts even more free of a house framework in favour of flowing jazz licks, and last of all is the achingly beautiful downtempo original version of 'In A Better Way.'

The Witness EP
The Witness EP (white vinyl 12" in spot-varnished sleeve)
Cat: IV 100. Rel: 08 Dec 21
  1. The Witness (6:54)
  2. And End (8:12)
  3. What The Hell (6:43)
  4. Pink Elephant (5:49)
Review: Eight years after their last single release 'Tatischeff, Innervisions co-heads Ame explore a more Detroit techno oriented sound on their latest release (the 100th in fact) for the Berlin-based label and The Witness is quite the milestone. The title track's style of hypnotic stomp on the A side takes its cues from Jeff Mills' seminal Purposemaker sound with its chiming melody, while the blip, blurp and bleep of B side cuts 'What The Hell' and 'Pink Elephant' are more indebted to the minimal sounds of Daniel Bell. Despite their prominence within house music, IV100 noticeably combines the unique sounds of Wiedemann and Beyer's solo performances - as live act and DJ respectively.

  1. Timbales (6:18)
  2. MDF (5:38)
  3. Bodja (6:10)
  4. Park Life (5:56)
Review: Rotterdam-based Ukrainian duo Antenna has got a super discography that includes outings on all the finest labels out there from Pinkman to Guidance to their own Antenna International US. Here they return to Clone Royal Oak for four tracks of deeply atmospheric house music. There is a big and tribal feel to 'Timbales' which is defined by thunderous hits of the eponymous drum as well as some spooky vocals. 'MDF' is more shadowy and paired back. The drum designs are so fresh it's a killer groove before things get all aggy and in your face with the off-balance stop and twitchiness of 'Bodja.' 'Park Life' closes out in reflective fashion with lush harmonies swirling around a big open space.

  3. Spacetime (7:35)
  4. Final Show (7:43)
Review: London's Blind Vision Dubs always deliver the best in current minimal/tech house and this one's no exception. It's by newcomer Areon with his first release titled Communicate. The title track is a hypnotic and ethereal dose of swing that will appeal to fans of the Rominimal sound, followed by the tripped-out microhouse of 'Visoneer'. Over on the flip, the after party continues, well into Monday morning, on the lean and subtle deepness of 'Final Show'. An impressive debut by this rising Greek producer.

All Night Brotherhood

  1. Brotherhood (6:56)
  2. All Night (5:54)
  3. All Night (Scruscru remix) (6:08)
Review: After spending much of the last few years hopping between various high-profile, much-loved imprints (Local Talk, Lazy Days and Apparel included), Ludovic Lllorca AKA Art of Tones has decided to launch his own label, PALP. His debut release on the freshly minted imprint is as good as you'd expect. A-side 'Brotherhood' is a low-slung, peak-time-tempo disco-house chugger, with simmering strings and heady disco loops rising above rock-solid beats and a sleazy, punk-funk style bassline. 'All Night' is a more up-beat and fizzing chunk of disco-house goodness full of jazzy, loose-fingered bass guitar and funky electric guitar licks, while Scruscru's accompanying remix is a looser, jazzier and more organic-sounding interpretation full of mazy organ motifs and Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synths.

  4. See Line Woman (Karizma Last 1ne dubstrumental) (6:04)
Review: There's currently a vogue for modern artists reworking the work of soul legends. One of our favourites from said crop has to be this 12" by nu-jazz and broken beat mainstay Atjazz, whose latest efforts come in the form Nina Simone cover, 'See-Line Woman'. Working with Dominique Fils-Aime - a Montreal singer-songwriter noted for taking inspiration from soul icons from the 40s and 60s like Simone and Billie Holiday - the result is a smooth, subdued take on the original Simone B-side. Happier light is shed on a song that originated as a 19th-Century African American folk song for sailors and sex workers.

  1. Istanbul (4:36)

  3. Stateless (8:22)
  4. Do/Don't (4:05)
Review: London's Mysticisms imprint reissues a 1993 release by enigmatic Manchester quartet B:dum B:dum Sound. Merging their backgrounds in post-punk through dub and their city's vibrant dance scene, their sole 12" (originally funded by the Bolton Art Council) incorporates samples, sound design and middle eastern influences on what is now a cherished item among diggers and earning exorbitant amounts on the secondhand market. From the bass-driven exotic enchantment of 'Istanbul', they take a slow-mo version of bleep and mix it with dub techno on the mesmerising groove of 'Stateless' (which was well ahead of its time) as well as the deep dub of 'Do Don'ts' providing perfect armchair riddims.

Similar to his last foray on MotorCity Wine Recordings Beltran has assembled an all-star cast of characters including John Arnold, Jeremy Ellis, James Simonson, and Kiko Navarro to deliver a slice of bright jazzy deep house heaven. Kiko Navarro's "Motor City Jazz Remix" starts the release with driving live drums and percussion for discerning dance floors. 4. You Are Overdriving (6:44)
Review: Ascendant DJ/producer in the Amsterdam underground Pascal Benjamin has built up a decent profile over the last few years, with releases on SlapFunk, Botanic Minds and Constant Black. He now adds the ever reliable Eastenderz to the list who present his latest EP. Endz048 features four cuts: the intoxicating, bass driven swing of opener 'Triggered Feet', but it's his focus on the afterhours sound where this youngster really impresses. This can be heard on the druggy microhouse of 'Autopilot' or the wacky shuffle funk of 'You Are Overdriving'

  3. Heatmap - "Arklight" (Blackdown remix) (4:03)
  4. Burial - "Space Cadet" (9:21)
Review: This surprise new EP finds celebrated music writer and producer Blackdown on the same EP as Burial for the first time since the latter remixed the former 15 years ago. There is a heavy Detroit influence in the far-sighted synths of 'This Journey' (VIP), with angsty vocal samples stitched into the bristling, swinging rhythm. Burial's 'Dark Gethsemane' bares all the producer's usual hallmarks - pitched up vocals, deft samples and a catchy 2-step shuffle. Blackdown then offers up a remix filled with chattery claps and UK funky rhythms to open the B-side, while Burial's 'Space Cadet' is another 2-step classic with its heady way up in the heavens.

  1. Bubble Up (5:20)
  2. Go With The Flow (7:05)

  4. Straight To The Back (6:18)
Review: The Lempuyang label gets off to a strong start by inviting one of the dons of dubby minimal techno to lay down some peerless material. Steve O'Sullivan's Bluetrain moniker is revered by anyone who knows their onions in the annals of UK techno, and he's on imperious form as the Homegrown Dubs EP fires up with the gaseous chord drops of 'Bubble Up'. 'Go With The Flow' is a sleeker, more uptempo affair with a snappy beat to appeal to the DJs out there, while 'Two Foot Terrorist' maintains the pace with some deeper metallic ink bursts for variation. 'Straight To The Back' channels the billowing tones of the A1 into a more groove-oriented form in case you want the tick of the hi-hat to steady your sea legs.

Review: The techno bromance between Stephan Bodzin and Marc Romboy feels almost as old as electronic music itself. But this new 12" - which comes on the Systematic label that has housed most of their work - updates the German pair's sound through a series of contemporary remixes. The opener from Ben Bohmer is a deep and icy roller, ANNA & Wehbba bring machine grit and grime to their churning take on 'Ferdinand' and Aera layers in meticulous synth modulations. Last of all is a wide open melodic techno complete with sweeping synths. It's a fine rework by Echonomist that is perfect for enchanting big crowds.

Review: Spanish label Drivecom had been on a rather extended hiatus of seven of or years. Fans of forward thinking electro will remember it fondly though, and now boss man Boris Divider continues its return with the third and last episode of the Generative Operation series. It is another cinematic elector offering with a widescreen vision and evolving synth lines that reach into the cosmos. There are supple and subtle minimal rhythms, bleeping and pulsing tones and 303 basslines that are brilliantly stark and cold. Spaced out electronic music doesn't get much better.
