Review: REPRESS ALERT: Trelik reach into their recent archives with a much needed repress of Whalesong, the label's 2011 debut from UK producer OCH. With a compulsive passion for the dying art of crate-digging combined with a love for modern synthesis techniques the now Sweden based OCH manages to put together a 12" that could easily be described as psychedelic Chicago. "Whalesong" is a pulsating floor work-out which references the US greats whilst building an emotive sub-aqua soundscape. "Blind is The Wind" follows with a sneaky chord driven spoken interlude which creates an air of tension before climaxing into "Last Chance Saloon".

  1. Liquid Earth - "X-Form"
  2. Huerta - "Legwork"
  3. DJOKO - "Copyrighted"
  4. T Jacques - "Voyetra"
Review: The latest collection of wayward floor heaters from Nuances De Nuit takes us once more into a colourful headspace where the possibilities are wide open to make house music with personality. Californian shining star Liquid Earth is up first, although he's better known as Urulu. 'X-Form' is a bubbling metropolis of futuristic synth squiggles with starry-eyed wonder in its heart and vintage techno smarts up top. Huerta follows up that sterling start with the enchanting electro incantations of 'Legwork', which build wonderfully on the sound laid out on his recent debut album for Voyage Recordings. On the flip, DJOKO brings a smart shuffle and some shimmering synth work to the forefront for a seriously smart twist on the tech house template, while T. Jacques opts for space age machine funk with a splash of boogie poured in for good measure.

Now That I Got To Know You
  1. Now That I Got To Know You
  2. Now That I Got To Know You (CVO instrumental dub mix)
Review: The honeyed, effortlessly soulful vocals of Reggie Hall have been a feature of Chicago house since the late 1980s, when he appeared on a Dance Mania release by Victor Romeo. He's released plenty of music since then, though this hook-up with Glenn Underground - who produced the music - and fellow house veteran Byron Stingily (who provided backing vocals) is still his first outing for almost 12 years. The A-side full vocal version is simply superb, with Hall's superb, impassioned, gospel-inspired vocals riding a bouncy, Osunlade style groove, jazzy guitars, sustained church organ chords and all manner of intricate musical details. Glenn Underground dons the CVO alias to deliver a slightly tougher, more groove-driven B-side "Dub" that nevertheless includes plenty of sun-bright musical warmth.

Review: David Swatten self released the "South EP" under his Planisphere guise out of Australia back in the year 2000. The 4 track 12" of ultra deep tones and smoky piano musings only found its way into a handful of owner's collections. A few copies resurfaced much later in 2017, with Dave himself selling his last few remaining records via email orders gathered through the online treasure trove that is the We're Going Deep Facebook group. For Those That Knoe promptly got in touch with Dave to talk about a potential project and it can now be revealed. This labour of love has come to fruition in the form of a long player that features three cuts from the "South EP" as well as 8 other rare and exclusive previously unreleased recordings.

Review: Berlin/Amsterdam imprint Lowmoneymusiclove has chosen to begin its 2020 release campaign with a debut, specifically the first release from Low Countries twosome Avos (Roderick Merkx & Tjeerd Wijffels). They begin in melodic mood via the bustling beats, tuneful bass and garage style organ stabs of "Illusive Timing", before drifting further towards funk-fuelled tech-house territory on the sleazy peak-time bounce of "Nafra". Arguably even better is the B-side opening "Bassline Dub" of "Nintendeau", where '80s style Fairlight stabs and 8-bit electronics ride a rapidly vibrating bassline and sweaty drum beats. Elsewhere, "Destinated" is deep, dreamy, woozy and properly bass-heavy, while "Shaguarmode" is a jacking affair blessed with chiming, near crystalline electronic melodies.

Review: It may have taken the best part of six months, but Glenn Underground has finally delivered his first new music of 2020. The Chicago house legend is in fine form on "Shake That Body", a warm and jazzy chunk of deep house/disco fusion rich in tasty instrumentation and topped off by a fine female lead vocal courtesy of newcomer T.H.I.C.K. It's accompanied on the A-side by the superb "Dubbl" version, which sees Glenn Underground strip the track back to a killer dub disco groove before bringing back the keys, acoustic guitars, spacey synths and snippets of T.H.I.C.K's vocal. Over on the flip you'll find a seductive "Remix" that subtly moves the track closer to deep, soulful house territory.

  1. I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know (Timmy Regisford original version) (5:47)
  2. I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know (Joaquin's edit & Overdub version) (7:07)
Review: Second time around for Timmy Regisford's inspired rework of Donny Hathaway's 1972 classic "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", an unofficial revision that first slipped out on white label a couple of years ago. Regisford's revision is inspired, with the veteran New York producer layering Hathaway's heartfelt vocals and select instrumental elements from the original mix (guitar, orchestration) over a bed of rolling house beats and layered percussion. It's an emotional, life-affirming affair that re-casts the melancholic original as a stirring house classic. Over on side B, Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell offers an equally fine "Edits and Overdubs" version that adds some brand-new synth solos, spacey electronics and sweat-soaked percussion to Regisford's impressive revision.

Review: Back once again we have the long anticipated 2nd release from Hearlucinate . Based around a party in London where each guest DJ is asked to collaborate on an EP with the Hearlucinogenic host and resident Tristan da Cunha . This time round we have the uber talented Ron Obvious laying down two killer cuts aimed straight at the dance floor . UK attitude mixes with New Jersey style organs , breaks , bass and a bad ass beats... Giving us two tracks that have an old school flavour but super fresh with a modern aesthetic. Once again showcasing his ability to produce timeless , tasteful grooves that make you move . Next up is TdC with his bass driven hypnotic hybrid sound . Picking up where from the last ep with heavy bottom end , driving beats , a spooky groove , all topped off with a dash of sleaze. To Finish the EP we welcome back Freakenstein with his electro funk monster taking no booty prisoner. Dance floor dynamite as always from this exciting new artist . Review: While Gianmarco Orsini is already well established as a producer thanks to solo releases on Elephant Moon and Partisan, fellow Italian Jacopo Latini is still in the process of making his name. This collaboration with Orsini as Data Memory Access - their first joint effort - should help raise his profile further. There's plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, from the throbbing, warehouse-ready retro-futurism of "Experience" - where angular acid lines and dreamy chords ride a '90s style Euro-house bassline - and the chunky acid house/tech-house fusion of "Acid In My Mind", to the drowsy electric piano chords, bustling breakbeats and bleeping deep house melodies of "Technology".

Review: Especial welcomes Kim Ann Foxman to debut on the label with an ode to the power of the moon. The sample heavy, acid vocal cuts no slack and shows Foxman confidently developing as a producer and is backed with a stellar set of remixes from Roza Terenzi, Dawl & Sween and Violet.

Revered by many as an on point clubber, dancer, singer, DJ and producer, her breakthrough in Hercules & Love Affair was a start, soon carving out her place as a solo artist and global DJ, while fitting in time to run the Firehouse - recently featuring Richard Sen and Kasra V - and SELF-TIMER labels - home to new project, Pleasure Planet.

As veteran of the San Francisco 90s heyday, slipping breaks around a 4/4 kick is a blast of past meets acid future, as 303 meets M1, while Foxman's lyrics - written during the Blood Moon over London - extols the power of the tides, nature's internal and external flow.

The remixes are a manner of breaks-heaven, as Roza Terenzi rips a steppas dub, Tone Dropout's Dawl and Sween master a latter day M25 anthem, before finally Violet, edits, strips, builds and takes things deep.

Make me lust, make me bleed.

Review: Burnski's Instinct outlet continues to bring some serious firepower to the resurgent UK garage scene, and this time he's facing off with 0113 (otherwise known as Kepler.) for two rabble-rousing heaters packed with inventive twists on the 2-step formula. "Apache" is an intensely detailed roller that pivots around a killer vocal take, and uses all kinds of synth flourishes to create a wholly futuristic atmosphere - the garage of the future, but certainly not future garage. "Ignite" has a slightly more old-skool flavour that nods to past masters like Smith & Mighty as well as the pioneering work of El B et al. Classy stuff on both sides of this cool and deadly 12".

Review: We were rather impressed by the first volume in the CCCP Edits series, a re-edit imprint seemingly dedicated to offering up reworks of obscure, largely unknown musical gems from Soviet-era Russia, so hopes are sky-high for this second instalment. We shouldn't have worried. Opener "Nochi" is a deep, woozy and off-kilter chunk of two-step garage/jazz-funk fusion, while "Ne Mojet Bit" is the most Balearic electro track we've heard in yonks. The fun continues on the flip, where the glassy-eyed deep pop-goes-two-step flex of "T=H2O" comes accompanied with the hip-house era breakbeat-house warmth (and jazzy keys) of standout track "Hare, Krishna".

Review: Astonishingly, Alton Miller was already four years into his production career when the "Blue Funk EP" first dropped on short-lived Detroit techno label M3 way back in 1997. The Detroiter is of course still going strong, though his productions are now way more polished than they were back then. As this reissue proves, the rawness and energy of his (relatively) early productions remains highly addictive. Check for example the hot-stepping analogue Afro-house beats, rich bass and tasty keys of "Bliss", the breathlessly loopy sweatiness of "Lovin' & Dancing" - a kind of raw disco-house cut-up masterpiece - and the trippy, breakbeat-driven sample house intensity of "Blue Funk" itself. The smoothest track of all, the NJ deep house influenced "All Tonight", is closest in tone to his more recent productions.

The latter begins by offering a nod towards his work with UKG revivalists Phone Traxx on the aptly titled - and really rather good - "Wobble Roller", before peppering a chunky bassline and crunchy house drums with low-register organ stabs and occasional breakbeat blasts on "Bounce". Over on side B Traffic Records co-founder Bodin takes over and offers up two tracks that make the most of the Roland TB-303 (or at least something that sounds like it). "Sluga" is a bona-fide jacker with deep organ riffs, while "Hopez" is a snappier affair powered forward by a seriously squelchy bassline.

On the A side, they've taken on evergreen Arthur Russell delight "In The Light Of The Miracle" - hallowed ground no doubt, but the team approach with care and tease some additional minutes and a little more oomph out of this beauty of a track. It's harder to ID "The GB Track" on the flip, but it matters not one bit as the endless flow of woozy, tastefully cut up funk spills out over 12 minutes.

This EP is nowhere near as expansive of course, but still contains a quartet of quality cuts in his trademark dreamy-but-chunky deep-tech style. First head for opener "Vista Lens", where swelling chords and deep space electronics dance atop a chunky groove, before dancing your way through the percussion-rich, Afro-tech bounce of "Python's Temple". Over on side B, "Dead Set" is another smooth cruise through deep house/tech-house fusion, while closing cut "House of Mirrors" boasts the twin attractions of weighty, thickset bass and spacey, alien-sounding lead lines.

Here they complete the package via a "VIP Edition" 12" single featuring a brand new cut and a previously unheard revision of album highlight "Feelin' Good". The simply titled "Version" mix of that on the flip is delicious, with the Philpot founder layering expansive piano motifs and dizzying solos over skippy, U.S garage-influenced beats and a warm, toasty bassline. Arguably even better though is the fresh cut, "Niederbeat Gospel (Dub)". Living up to its title, the track is a thickset chunk of bluesy gospel house dustiness built around swinging beats, beefy bass and layered vocal samples from a crackly old gospel recording.

Beatiful Lie
Cat: VISIO 034. Rel: 03 Jul 20
  1. Beautiful Lie (feat D Millz)
  2. Time Passing
Review: As both a member of Glenn Underground's Strictly Jaz Unit crew and as a solo artist, Vick Lavender has made some mighty fine deep house in his time. Further proof arrives via this fine two-tracker, which marks the veteran producer's first outing on Alex Attias' Visions Inc label. Probably the pick of the pair is superb A-side "Beautiful Lie", where guest singer D Millz adds a soulful vocal to a glorious bed of dreamy chords, jaunty jazz-funk bass, carnival-friendly drums and colourful synth solos. Lavender continues on a similar theme with flipside "Time Passing", whose loose-limbed broken house drums recall the work of Osunlade. Add in some killer chords, jazzy electric piano solos and squelchy bass, and you have something that Ron Trent would be proud of.

  1. Builded Mind
  2. Nearly Forever
  3. Foreground
Review: Brawther's Negentropy is booting off the year with a return of London's best kept secret, Ron Obvious. The EP is a musical delight formed by three club ready deep house cuts that Ron hs on lockdown. The title track "Builded Mind" has his signature rolling basslines, etheral vocals and lush pads that we've come to love in his music. "Nearly Forever" is a faster bumpy and swingin' number while "Foreground" closes the EP on a light and dreamy note. A versatile record that will stand the test of time and cater for a discerning audience is the promise we make with this one at Negentropy HQ.

Inner Movement EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ALB 011. Rel: 29 Jun 20
  1. Inner Movement
  2. Dizzy Freq
  3. Dizzy Freq (Domenico Rosa remix)
  4. Inner Movement (Titonton Duvante Flip)
Review: There's never a dull moment with the Albion posse, who continue to search far and wide to present consistently innovative twists on the house music template. This time around they've invited Italian producer Adriano Sorrentino from the DEMUT camp to drop some sparkling jackers with an old-skool palette but a forward-thinking spirit. "Inner Movement" is a sweet slice of melancholic techno rich in the synth department. "Dizzy Freq" is arguably the prize here though - a rough-hewn jacker with heavy sub bass and plenty of freaky analogue delights wobbling around on top. On the flip, Domenico Rosa delivers a funky, equally ghoulish version of "Dizzy Freq" and then the legendary Titonton Duvante lays down a sumptuous deep house take on "Inner Movement".
