Kaunas Baltic Connect (feat The Sorcerers) (3:02)
Baby, I Dont Care (3:01)
Review: ATA Records, camped out in Leeds, formed in 2014 by Neil Innes in a formerly disused garage on the outskirts of town. Described as an "Aladdin's Cave of vintage 1960s recording equipment", we've little intel on how exactly Innes chanced upon ownership of such a stockpile, but what we do know is that he soon set about recording these songs exclusively to 2" tape, and using mid-century recording techniques to yield that ever-so-knowable vintage crunch, so native to 60s and 70s funk, soul and soundtrack music. Perhaps a somewhat fictive alias, Kaunas Baltic Connect and the Sorcerers are two such tributary acts to the library archives of yore (KPM, Cavendish, Burton, etc.), and here they lay down 'Baby, I Don't Care' and 'Kaunas Baltic Connect', two fervent fracases packing riffy synth leads and seat-edge strings, nodding to the "brooding menace of Poliziotteschi and Euro-crime movies".

Review: Music for Shape-Shifters: Field Recordings from the Amazonian Lowlands, 1981-1985 offers an extraordinary glimpse into the rich musical heritage of the Wakuenai (Curripaco) people. These recordings, left behind by anthropologist Jonathan Hill, are an incredible 12 hours of diverse local genres, including sacred chants, spirit languages and the excellent sounds of trumpet and flute ensembles. Captured during all-night sessions, canoe paddling on the river and deep within the forests, these tapes serve as vital artifacts of indigenous ethnomusicology, illustrating the deep connection between sound and the animistic beliefs of Wakuenai society. Listeners will encounter the enchanting range of Wakuenai wind ensembles, from the deep bass drones of handmade trumpets to the piercing dissonance of flutes. The music often embodies rhythmic and melodic patterns that evoke the natural worldirepresenting jaguars, spawning fish and the calls of various spirits and animals. At times, these instruments unite in cacophonous displays, evoking the primordial chaos of creation. Presented here for the first time, these recordings not only honor the cultural legacy of the Wakuenai but also celebrate the cosmic sound that they believe opened the world. Produced by Radio Is A Foreign Country, this collection is essential for anyone interested in the profound relationship between music and culture.

Review: Shigeo Sekito's influential Special Sound Series Vol. 2, finally reissued on sky blue vinyl, celebrates the visionary Electone pioneer's unparalleled talent and global impact. Originally released in 1975, this seminal work showcases Sekito's talent of the Electone, blending fresh rhythms and whimsical melodies that have impressed audiences across genres - from hip-hop to dream pop. 'The Word II', a standout track famously covered by Mac DeMarco on 'Chamber of Reflection,' catapulted Sekito's music to international recognition, inspiring artists like Travis Scott and Quavo's Huncho Jack. Sekito, known also for his piano workds under the name Ken Akishino, pushed the boundaries of sound manipulation and tone color, creating compositions described as both meticulous and daringly innovative. His legacy, bolstered by this meticulously remastered reissue and accompanied by comprehensive liner notes from Chee Shimizu, continues to shape the future of Electone music, resonating deeply with enthusiasts worldwide.

The Winning Streak (reissue)
Cat: MISSYOU 038. Rel: 28 Oct 24
Winning Streak (extended version) (5:44)
Winning Streak (3:20)
Roadrunners (4:30)
Review: Curiously, 'The Winning Streak' has nothing to do with Miami Vice the TV series - in fact, the artist was an alias of library music legend Alan Hawkshaw and the track was a piece he composed in the early 1980s that ended up being used as the theme for a long-forgotten UK drama about 'family business intrigue'. The track, presented on this Miss You reissue in extended and original forms, is however a far-sighted treat - a combination of Harold Flatermeyer style synthsesiser excellence, delay-laden drums, Martin Rushent-esque percussion, trippy melodic motifs and just the right amount of sonic intrigue. A slept-on delight for sure. To round off an excellent EP, we also get original bonus cut 'Roadrunner', a synth-heavy instrumental which was used as incidental music in the TV series.

Review: Magic In Threes returns with two spacey tracks that are guaranteed to get floors moving. The wonderful opener 'Aperitivo' blends Italo-disco vibes with atmospheric library music and in doing so manages to strike a perfect balance between compelling groove and lovely chill vibes. On the flip of this limited 7" is 'Perp Walk' which makes for a joyful ride with its dizzying rhythm sure to launch your soul into cosmic bliss. Both tracks are cosmic funk explorations with infectious rhythms and a sense of playful experimentation that translate the band's signature blend of retro sounds and modern sensibilities into something fresh.

Review: Something's Up! is a masterful compilation that features the eclectic brilliance of John Barry's film scores. Curated by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley, this collection highlights Barry's transition from a British arranger to a pop icon, renowned for defining the sound of the Cold War spy movie era. Focusing on music from 1964 to 1967, this album features Barry's iconic work on James Bond classics like Goldfinger, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice, cementing his influence on the spy genre. Beyond Bond, Barry's contributions to films such as The Ipcress File and The Quiller Memorandum exemplify his ability to blend tension with sophistication. The collection also includes less-celebrated but notable scores like those for King Rat, The Chase and Seance on a Wet Afternoon, reflecting Barry's diverse range and ability to craft memorable themes beyond the mainstream. Barry's music, characterised by its lush orchestration and emotive power, extended its reach from the silver screen to the vinyl, resonating with listeners even if they hadn't seen the films - and his exceptional talent and enduring legacy in film music is on full display here,

Review: Brooklyn based Mighty Eye welcomes the Michael Leonhart Orchestra - which features some 20+ musicians - for their first single since 2018, although the collective has put out three albums in that time. These two cuts on this 45rpm are the first and second movements in Michael Leonhart's The Normyn Suite #1, which is a soundtrack to the five stages of grieving and is both a celebration and a requiem. The soundtrack is inspired by the death of an old dog and first appeared on The Normyn Suites album. Here it is expanded with the original brass, woodwinds, and strings now siting with choir and found percussion as well as gritty breakbeats from Nick Movshon.

Review: Habibi Funk cannot contain their excitement in sharing a second collection of deep grooves and unreleased songs from Algeria's Ahmed Malek soundtrack works. Ahmed Malek - who has often been compared to Ennio Morricone - recorded the majority of these songs in the 1970s and early 1980s, during which time his own native Algeria was in its film heyday. Malek became known for his combination of traditional music with jazz, psych-rock, and R&B, and yet did not find international recognition beyond his hometown; Habibi Funk recount the mission of tracking down Malek's sister to unearth a box full of master tapes, which formed the foundation of this miraculous new release salvage. As Ahmed says, "I didn't choose music, music chose me": it shows here.

Review: If you assumed it was possible to live without a ska version of the James Bond theme tune then prepare to be taught one of life's great lessons. Assumption is the mother of all f**k ups, basically. Fear not, though, what was a one-off pressing by Soul Jazz for Record Store Day in 2020 is once again available, only this time on gatefold LP rather than five 7" singles. Perhaps not as authentic or ideal for DJs, nevertheless the contents are just as captivating. Celebrating, in part at least, the bond between Bond and the Caribbean - author Ian Fleming lived on Jamaica and several stories are set in the region, and filmed on said island (Dr No, Live & Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, No Time To Die) this is evocative stuff. Stick it on, kick back with a Martini, and picture yourself casing out a mark at some beachside party spot, stunning partner in hand, senses subtly on high alert.

Review: Two-piece band Hermanos Gutierrez, formed of brothers Alejandro and Estevan Gutierrez, here continue to take influence from 1950s Latin American music and film, on their latest record El Camino De MI Alma. Recalling the barren landscapes stretching from the Midwest to the lower lacuna of the Gulf, this eight-track record is effortless in its ability to evoke boundlessness, the ineffability of the ever-extending horizon glimpsed while travelling, despite its ostensible sound remaining quite roomy, barely spring-reverbed if there is any treated sense of space. 'Hasta La Muerte' and its ilk are our highlights, bringing out the bare but lunar-luminescent feel of the vista; this is an album for guitar at arid dusk, not dewey dawn.

Review: Nick Ingram is a criminally lesser-spotted artist whose credits stretch back to 1998, among which include his various instrumental and production contributions to the band The New Electrics, as well as single contributions to compilations by NME and Melody Maker. But Dynamite Cuts here call 'Trip Wire' and 'Throng' two tracks expressly made for TV soundtracking - never heard before, they reveal Ingram's repertoire in library scoring; the former track is a feverish trip-funker, packed with twang guitar and yodelling flutes, while the latter is a chromatic instrumental soul-jazz number starring a deeply haunting counterpoint, shared equally between synth and voice.

Revived after decades of hiatus, the label is now devoted to the reissue of Flippermusic's historic catalogue of the 60s, 70s and 80s for the first time since its original release onto vinyl, digitised and re-mastered from the original master tapes so that these legendary recordings can be heard once again. This classic Italian production music was all recorded in Rome recording studios by a heritage of composers including Alessandro Alessandroni, Amedeo Tommasi, Gerardo Iacoucci, Remigio Ducros, Romolo Grano, Daniela Casa, Piero Montanari and many more. Italian Library Vaults is a 12 track compilation bringing together the best tracks produced by Flippermusic in the first years of his activity.

Dues & Don'ts (4:21)
Fraud Fades (4:53)
Review: Producer Soul Supreme is back with another 7" record, delivering two new phat'uns to that subsection of fans who prefer things on the wonkier side. Following earlier, acclaimed tributes the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Mos Def, the new 'Dues and Don'ts' b/w 'Fraud Fades' 45 features two, all-original jazz-funk groovers by the Amsterdam-based keyboardist and producer. The former track burns slowly, carefully building up around a harpsichord improv, Herbie Hancock style, coming heavy-set by a thick and booming drum backing that soon enough late-blossoms into a cinematic, stringed soaring-on-high. The latter track pays complementary homage to the funk drum breaks of yore, with the central drum line around which the track is built echoing Serge Gainsbourg or Clyde Stubblefield, albeit making conspicuous its own electronically sequenced, not entirely live-performed, feel.

Review: In the 70s and 80s, nothing was as revolutionary as the synthesiser. Electronic sounds became essential for forward-thinking adverts, with TV producers and advertisers seeking music akin to 'Tubular Bells,' Tomita, and Jean Michel Jarre. Music libraries like De Wolfe, Bruton, Parry, and Chappell swiftly adapted. Bob Stanley's new album, 'Tomorrow's Fashions,' compiles advertising jingles, TV themes, and space exploration tracks with ambient beats from that era. Despite being 40-50 years old, the music feels fresh, featuring jazz veterans like Brian Bennett and John Cameron embracing synthesizers. This electronica predated new age and ambient music, influenced pop, early Human League, Warp Records, and has been sampled by MF Doom and Kendrick Lamar.

Review: .Arriving with plenty of time for Halloween, as this weird and unarguably trippy record's release blurb explains, listeners should expect: "A crypt full of classic Spook Show promos and radio spots monstrously mashed together with fiendish rare surf and garage rock instrumentals." Best buckle up, then. Alongside a number of retro TV warnings about entering other dimensions, advertisements for movies with mummies in which we're told "theatre managers will stop the show anytime it becomes too scary", the music itself is kitsch but in the kind of way many people will be drawn to. Exotic, hypnotic, subtly sexy and surprisingly immersive, guitars croon and organs refrain between insane examples of just how up-front and in your face mid-20th Century commercials were.

Review: Back in the 60s and 70s, library music exploded as a genre. It saw plenty of talented musicians make extra cash by laying down endless instrumental grooves for use in TV, film and radio. The King Underground label is now digging into the vast vaults for a new series of releases of some of the finest sounds from the era. The first 45 features tracks considered to be 'dramatic' from John Scott and Tony Kinsey. Scott's 'Milky Way' opens up with cosmic chords and sweeping strings that take you to the stars while 'Star Voyage' has a more busy lead. Kinsey's 'Kaleidoscope' builds the tension with multiple movements from several instruments.

Review: The fact Paesaggi is being released on Four Flies, an Italian label that has tasked itself with unearthing, or rather catching obscure soundtracks from the country's golden age before they fall into complete obscurity and off the face of the Earth, should tell you everything there is to know about this one. One of the all-time masters of film scores, Umiliani delivered the album in 1971, and it's a wonderful example of his work.

It's probably important to point out that his output leant towards the less high brow genres, including Spaghetti Westerns, and soft core sex movies. This version of the album itself, which is number three after the original in 1971 and re-release (with different sleeve) in 1980, features performances by legendary session supergroup I Marc 4, and is as wistful and beguiling as it is lounging and made to make background moods. Flutes, guitars, strings and all.

Review: Talk about a time capsule. While the obvious nostalgists out there scour and share their cassette eight packs, desperately converting the mixes they contain to digital files before the inevitable unspooling renders the original recordings obsolete, here comes Death Is Not The End - a record label that lends its name to (well, hosts) a show on NTS Radio - with the ultimate trip back to a time many weren't lucky enough to live through.

As the name suggests, this is literally a collection of no less than 40 radio adverts that appeared at some point or other on London's once-plentiful pirate radio stations between 1984 and 1993. Many are poor quality in terms of production, a good number use samples from some of the biggest dance tracks of the day, loads namecheck some legends of the UK rave scene, and every single one would be loads of fun to drop into a mix or use as a sample for productions. Not that we're recommending doing anything without license.

Review: The first official reissue of Playtime by popular and prolific Italian composer, Piero Umiliani. Incorporating styles like jazz, easy listening/lounge, rock, funk, and bossa nova to a genre largely dominated by orchestral scores, he penned some of the most outstanding kosmische music from the '60s and '70s with over 150 titles under his belt. Originally released on Umiliani's own Omicron label in 1968, the album has been remastered from the original recordings by Noah Mintz.

Review: The first fruits of Be With Records' recently announced partnership with Tele Music is a reissue of one of the legendary library music label's most far-sighted and sought-after releases: Tonio Rubio's 1972 collection 'Rhythms'. Offering the best in deep disco-breaks, laidback Blaxploitation funk and killer groove-based instrumentals, the album now comes accompanied by extensive new liner notes from Rubio and many of the crate-digging DJs who have been inspired by the album. Highlights include - but are in no way limited to - the wonderfully cosmic and otherworldly 'Dead Slow', the low-slung delights of 'Bass In Action' parts one and two, and the Pierre Henry-esque brilliance of 'Latin Leitmotiv'.

Review: Voxatone (a.k.a. Markey Funk and Shay Landa) serve up this final release of the year for the Delights label here. It is funk music made from racks of vintage synth gear and with both eyes set firmly on the more psychedelic end of the cosmic scale. First up is 'Figure I.108' which is beautifully evocative synth-led psych-funk and then comes a funk chase through outer space on 'Figure III.122.' Both tunes are absolute winners which really take your mind and imagination into interplanetary new worlds.

Brian Bennett & Alan Hawkshaw - "Name Of The Game" (4:25)
Dave Richmond - "Confunktion" (4:38)
Review: Measured Mile is a new 7" label run by regular Ace consultant and confidante Bob Stanley. The plan is to release DJ-friendly 45s that are either very rare or previously unavailable on seven-inch. On this new one come two pieces from esteemed library musicians - the well known pairing of Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett, and Dave Richmond. 'Name Of The Game' is a slow instrumental blues piece with beats ready to be plundered for hip-hop beats that once soundtracked a 1970s aftershave ad, while Richmond's 'Confunktion' is a motivational builder-upper with drums and organs aplenty.

UFO (5:26)
Review: Reissued by Before I Die after being singled out as a choice cut from a recent Swedish library music compilation, 'UFO' is a cosmic funk jam by one lesser-cited duo known as Falk & Klou. This being their only collaboration, the fused efforts of Carl Johan Fogelklou and Fredrik Segerfalk make for an otherworldly experience, with lasery sound FX and a strange narration complementing this toothy electro-funk oddball. The remix by Andi Henley (Ruf Kutz) on the A-side cements the track's importance.
