Hurt So Bad (3:45)
Review: A timely revisit to two of the stand out covers on Italian jazz/lounge posterboy Andrea Balducci's 2012 album Bloom. "Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

This Is What You Are (feat The High Five Quintet - radio edit) (4:21)
This Is What You Are (The Brazilian Rime) (4:53)
Review: "This Is What You Are" is undoubtedly Mario Biondi's most celebrated work. He first sung it for original composers Was A Bee in 2004, before re-recording it for his debut album (alongside the High Five Quintet) in 2006. Since then it has been reissued or remixed on numerous occasions. Here it gets reissued on a tidy 7" single, with a punchy radio edit - a swinging, Sunday afternoon style chunk of Latin soul-jazz rich in jaunty grooves, soaring orchestration and smooth vocals - being joined by the "Brazilian Rime" rework. This tasty re-recording re-casts the song as a breezy, samba-fired slab of early 1970s style Brazilian MPB. It's an inspired interpretation and could well become the definitive version of the track.

Review: Long-established Italian producer Nicola Conte started working with jazz trombobist Gianluca Petrella back in 2017. In the years since, they've released a string of singles that fuse contemporary house sounds with the rhythms and musical styles of Africa. Here they present their collaborative debut album, People Need People, an effortlessly soulful affair that draws deeply on the pair's joint love of deep jazz-funk (see 'Hold On To Your Dreams') and the funk-fuelled goodness of Afrobeat ('Nigeria'). Throw in versions of those previously released singles (think 'African Spirits' and 'New World Shuffle' for starters), and you've got a highly entertaining full of high-quality musicianship and plenty of life-affirming melodic motifs.

The Higher Love (4:14)
Review: Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's recent album, People Need People, was one of the warmest, soulful ad most accessible sets of the year, with the experienced Italian duo combining authentic jazz instrumentation and percussion with contemporary deep house and broken beat grooves. This superb seven0=-inch single showcases two of the album's undoubted gems: the impeccable deep house soul of 'People Need People' - a wonderfully sun-soaked affair in which Petrella's impassioned vocals and vibraphone solos stretch out across a tactile groove - and the downtempo, spoken word-laden hip-hop/jazz fusion of 'The Higher Love'. In a word: essential.

Review: Those who've been followed the nu-jazz sound closely over the last two decades should already be familiar with the work of Italian trumpeter Gerardo Frisina; after all, this is the Schema regular's eight studio set since the dawn of the century. In our opinion, Moving Ahead is also one of the best, with Frisina expanding on his usual Latin-jazz inspired sound via tracks that variously incorporate elements of samba house, West and East African drum music, jazz house, dub and tropical-tinged jazz-funk. Yet for all the subtle eclecticism, there are constant threads that run throughout, specifically densely packed percussion and Frisina's haunting trumpet and sax solos.

Review: So the legend goes: Tokyo dance music aficionados DJs Nori, Fukuba, Alex From Tokyo, and Kenji Hasegawa came together sometime in 2003, with but one ultimate goal: to bring together, in their own words, the best music, with the best sound system, the best hospitality, by the best management staff, in the best location. The result was Gallery Connection, a venue and soundsystem situated right next to Omotesando station, in the the heart of the city's upscale cultural rampart, Harajuku. Famously held on Sunday afternoons, this dream team's party is once again started with two reissued versions of their original CD fixture and DJ set go-to, 'Smile', flaunting its stylistic versatility: a signature Balearic-scenic Shibuya-kei track that resounds in memory as the time-honoured party's de facto theme tune.

Review: It has only taken two albums for Chris Illingworth, Nick Blacka, and Rob Turner to land with an LP on the legendary Blue Note label, but they've done it, and they've done it in fine style. Moreover, it's also a bold move from Blue Note, who only usually steer away from pure jazz for the likes of Madlib and co, but in hindsight, the Gogo Penguin trio have what it takes to be remembered as fine producers of beat-driven free jazz. Mixing up elements of nu-soul, together with broken beat and classic jazz, the trio's music is wild and diverse, and fully representative of the label's vision and charisma. Also, it's exactly the sort of thing that Gilles Peterson is in to, so sit back, relax, and let Man Made Object take you away.

Founded in 2005 by brothers Tom and Gu in London, the label soon got international acclaim by distributing tracks worldwide and establishing a niche for uptempo funk and soulful grooves. The compilation features hits like The New Mastersounds' 'Give Me A Minute Pt. 1 & Pt. 2' and Diazpora's 'Song 2'. With contributions from Mothergroove, Sir Ali Bengali, and Renegades Of Jazz, plus an exclusive track by The King Rooster, this release is vital to all proper funk heads.

The spine-tingling, spiritual and beautiful record transitions from stirring, powerful jazz and gospel compositions to ambient tracks that keep you afloat amongst the stars. Each one serves as a truly profound statement of communal healing and peace. There are also some fantastic contributions from Niecy Blues, Kalia Vandever, Tyrone Allen, and Jessie Cox, all of whom help Amen to showcase Guidry's artistic growth and ability to blend genres to create a cohesive and impactful musical experience.

Review: Kyle Hall makes another entry into the already fine discography of his Forget The Clock label with another fine four tracker. His usual raw style pervades from the off with the well swung drums and bumping kicks of the title track soon to get you in the groove. His signature diffuse synth work is what brings warmth and soul to the dusty drums of 'Track 2' while 'Sarabi' ups the pace with a more hurried groove and pent up sense of party joy. A second bonus track closes proceedings, with 'Track 4' layering up low slung drums and meandering cosmic leads to heady effect.

Review: Japanese nu-jazz doesn't get any more smouldering than this deep cut from Yusuke Hirado featuring Lil Summer on vocal duties. 'Fly Away' is a mellow melter thanks in no small part to the moody strings lingering behind Hirado's fluid funk production. It's a downtempo vibe which calls to mind the UK street soul sound, contrasted by B-side joint 'Dear Limmertz' which has a more jazz funk oriented flavour. Both joints won't let you down when you want to set the mood as smooth as possible - with a seasoned pro like Hirado at the controls, what else would you expect?

Review: A Moodymann remix is a mad rare thing. The singular Detroit producer very rarely steps out to tackle other people's music but when he does the world takes note. This time he sets to work on 2022's 'Hold On To It' by Colonel Red and Inkswel. In his hands, it becomes a distinctively low sling bit of sleazy deep house with punctured drums, off-grid pianos and his own vocal mutterings. Potatohead People offer a more lush and soulful downbeat vibe, while a Moodorama Weird Mistake is perfect for late-night back rooms and the Moodorama Deep Rise mix is all bubbly bass and melodies that provide real musical comfort.

It's been 15 years since a breakout release put this group on the map and now trombonist and multi-instrumentalist Gianluca Petrella and poet, rapper and MC Martin Thomas Paavilainen (aka Benjamin "Bentality" Paavilainen) link once more to great effect as they use jazz as a vehicle to convey their messages of cultural synergy, unity and love. Afro-beat and Ethio-jazz, funk, psychedelia, and modal music all colour the most compelling grooves.

Drawing together an ensemble of players in pursuit of spiritual adventures in music, the South African-Mozambican collective has grown together and now their vibrant panoply of sound has finally been rendered on this 11-track opus. From Sun Ra's free jazz visions to township styles like pantsula and bubblegum feeding into spiritual chants and adventurous electronics, the end result is a trip like no other. Review: Astonishingly, eight years have passed since NYC soul man Jose James released the brilliant "No Beginning No End" album on Blue Note. He's released plenty of other impressive sets since, though few quite as effervescent and sonically perfect. This belated sequel is therefore hotly anticipated. Happily we can report that it's superb, with James offering up a suite of super-strong soul songs that variously join the dots between neo-soul, summery sing-alongs (see the catchy "You Know What It Do"), jazz-funk, flash-fired hip-hop-soul, slow jams and the kind of slick but bustling soul-jazz gems that he's always done so well. It's still only March, but we have no doubt this will be one of the soul albums of the year.

Review: Few artists in electronic music have the serious musical chops of Mathew Jonson. The man has formally studied jazz and always brought famous invention to his synth-heavy sounds under whatever guise he has been working with. Here he is back under his own name on Deset and opens up with some delightful and mellifluous synth ripples on 'Dawn' and then soundtracks a cosmic voyage on scattered percussive sounds and alien effects on 'Artificial Intelligence'. 'SOS' is a broken beat jazz work out and with The Mole he crafts a deep, seductive groove marbled with more great melody on 'Feels So Good.' 'Got Bass' is playful cosmic electro to close.

Side-1 features 'Jazzy Touch' (Lego re-edit), a smooth jazz track transformed into a four-on-the-floor jam. Bringing together honest and infectious songwriting and raw-but-soft production, this is an indelible addition to Masego already's already-established style and catalogue; one particularly known for the incorporation of saxophone parts between ultra-slick beats a-la collaborators FKJ or Medasin. One imagines hotboxed, closed-door studio rooms and leopard prints, as Masego compellingly explores his emotions a humorous fashion, and across a curt 14 tracks.

Review: Maverick vocalist and leftfield pop star Roisin Murphy head into bold new worlds with her Hairless Toys album. The avant-garde pop collection was released in 2015 and showcases Murphy's distinctive vocals and eclectic songwriting style. From the haunting melodies of 'Gone Fishing' to the pulsating grooves of 'Exploitation,' she shows great range but each track is unified by its air of sophistication and experimentation. Murphy's lyrical depth and emotive delivery add layers of complexity, while the production, featuring contributions from Eddie Stevens and Mark Brydon, creates a lush sonic landscape. As such this record is a testament to Murphy's artistic vision and a still standout blend of electronic and pop sounds.

Review: Reggie Ray's latest release, timed with the Paris '24 Olympics Breaking event, pays homage to street culture with a heartfelt record. With intricate production and a nod to New York '72, it's a fitting tribute to DJ Regal's innovative spirit. The artwork by Optic Intake adds visual depth, resonating with the energy of the FBV Crew and the late Paul Eve's enduring influence. Released by Lexington144 Records, this EP blends nostalgia with contemporary beats, showcasing Reggie Ray's mastery in crafting dynamic, street-inspired tracks. A poignant note honors Eve's legacy, promising future releases from Lexington 144 Records. This release not only celebrates breaking culture but also tells about the enduring impact of its creators.

Review: Mexico's Erik Rico relaunched his LifeNotes label last year with a new album The Journey Continues and now he continues the good form shown there with The Arrival, a new EP which sees him present the 53rd Street Quintet. They bring all manner of percussive excellence and hot Latin influence to his organic house sounds across a series of cuts that we can imagine being huge at the legendary New York parties Body & Soul. 'The Arrival' is all liquid chords and jumbled hits and brass, 'The Offering' has a lush broken beat skip and 'The Awakening' has a deeper vibe. 'The Offering' gets a pair of fresh garage reworks on the flip.
