Dark Of The Sun EP (heavyweight blue vinyl 12")
Cat: PHC 028. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. On The Horizon (7:30)
  2. Dark Of The Sun (6:28)
  3. Wetware (6:32)
Review: Formerly Halo Cyan Records, Halocyan was rebranded and renamed in 2014. It is a sublabel of Phthalo, launched by LA musician Dimitri Fergadis. It's had some great artists appear recently in the form of Paul Woolford, Extrawelt and of course the legendary Dave Angel - who presented the last two releases as part of the Incoming series. Next up is Bristol's Borai, who has had releases on top local labels like BRSTL and Happy Skull in addition to internationals Tasteful Nudes and Retrofit. Dark Of The Sun features a variety of moods that are all expertly executed for whatever the occasion. From the evocative opening track "On The Horizon" which has a Detroit hi-tech soul type of vibe which we really enjoyed. The title track is more straight ahead with its Berlin style warehouse stomp, complimented by suspense filled dub chords, pounding drums and hypnotic pads. Finally "Wetware" takes it down a notch or two on this retro-flavoured deep tech house number - which is perfect to play just before the lights come on.

Svegsy EP (12" in hand-stamped sleeve)

  1. Svegsy (6:04)
  2. New Vision (6:46)
  3. Ghost Song (6:10)
  4. Ghost Song (Boo Williams Chicago Ghost mix) (6:27)
Review: This EP offers a double dose of debuts, with both Bugsy (a hotly tipped Milanese DJ/producer) and Astroloop making their bows. They begin with "Svegsy", an impressively deep, woozy and fluid concoction that peppers a loose, percussion-rich deep house groove with hazy chords, tactile synth bass and a vocal sample once utilized by acid house sort Armando. Elsewhere, "New Vision" sees them wrap a chunky, analogue-rich bassline and rhythm track with spacey electronics and "Ghost Song" is a quietly soulful trip into rolling, ultra-deep house. Boo Williams steps up to remix the latter track, serving up a superb interpretation that sounds like a trippy tribute to Omar S's more electronic moments with added synthesizer solos.

Review: While Fantastic Man's material has been in and out of our shelves since 2011, it was this year's LP for Paris' Antinote that really grabbed our attention. "Rhythm Algorithm" for Superconscious follows a similarly wacked-out vision of house, and the title track itself is a stunning bullet made of ricocheting percussion and spectral melodies. "Trance Sexual" is a bumping, Chicago-leaning house banger that'll mix like perfection into just about anything, whereas "Fittin' & Turnin' (All Day)" is deconstructed by comparison, a hypnotic and highly frenetic sort of house jacker that rings and twists frantically from start to finish. Class.

Review: Jazzy Couscous let rip with a little spiritual house healing from a Tokyo OG: Yukihiro Fukutomi. Loaded with swooning Rolando-style pads and a tightly knitted chugging beat and laced with subtle acid and twinkling arpeggios, the deeper into the seven minute trip we travel, the more blissful and immersive things get. Flip for a classic strutting jazzy house rub from label co-founder Hugo LX as he brings the twinkles right to the forefront and moulds the synths into spring jazz-tickled chords. Coming at you in a range of screen-printed coloured sleeves, this is special right down to the very last detail.

Review: Stephen Lopkin's singular doses of electro-tinged house music have pretty much become Glasgow's 'finest''. While everyone else is out snoozing to some deep house and mild-mannered tech, this dude packs a punch each and every time he drops a new release onto our charts. Just in time for the year's end, Lopkin drops Southside Engineering on the sublime Bokhari imprint, and these five metallic dance bombs are enough to make any serious Drexcyia fan think that, yes, there might be a way forwards after all! Full of adrenaline and electrifying swing, you can count on this gear to keep you up and running all night long - even the Ikpathua remix of "Light From Light" has its own particular way of expressing energy and a solid groove. Heavy.

Tistish (12")

  1. Tistish (6:59)
  2. Nee Shitteru (7:05)
Review: Earlier this year, Man Power briefly returned to his former home, Newcastle, to make some more music with his former Last Waltz colleagues. ESP Institute boss Lovefingers was impressed by the resultant tracks and here gives them a deserved release. A-side "Tistish" is a thrillingly wonky and intoxicating affair, with exotic synthesizer melodies, bustling Italo-disco style arpeggios and fuzzy, modular style electronics joining forces to create a mind-altering dancefloor mood (think Moscoman or Red Axes covering the original 1988 version of the KLF's "What Time Is Love" whilst high on acid). Arguably even better is sleazy flipside "Nee Shitteru", where ritualistic tribal drums and ragged analogue bass create a feverish and humid mood.

Review: Before bagging a show on NTS Radio earlier this year, DJ/producer Molinaro plied his trade in London's clubs for the best part of a decade. This, though, is his debut EP and it's really rather good. Largely utilizing unfussy but punchy drum machine rhythms, onto which deep and dreamy chords, fuzzy basslines and fluid synth solos are layered, the five tracks here offer a neat summary of his on-point production style. We're particularly enjoying the skewed, lo-fi deep house soul of "TY", the metallic electro beats and dreamy synthesizers of "MOLOW" and the spacey, early morning futurism of EP standout "Gio", though Molinaro barely puts a foot wrong throughout.

Review: Osage is the alter ego of veteran Philadelphia dj/producer lil'dave. A member of the highly respected Illvibe Collective and the co-host of the internationally known broadcast Eavesdrop Radio, he has released music under various aliases for record labels. BBE Records, Tru Thoughts, Record Breakin' Music and First Word Records to name but a few. His sound incorporates deep house, African rhythms, UK garage, broken beat and much more. Over the years, he has been building a solid reputation, with his tracks supported by notable tastemakers such Gilles Peterson. This 12" compiles four favourite moments from the two EPs that Osage has released thus far on the Brooklyn based Bastard Jazz - who have previously presented works by Soul Clap, Phil Gerus and Dead Horse Beats. From the deep, sexy and soulful house of "I Found You" (feat Dezeray Dawn ) to the spiritual Afro vibe of "Last Call" and the rather Bugz In The Attic sounding "Anyway" (feat Yemi) - this is a solid release.

Review: Long-time Amsterdam selector and digger Ouvrijster goes legit on Sleazy Beats Black Ops new label Make Believe Disco with three immaculate slices of glitterball deep house. "Lazarus" is a sprightly piece of Farina-level jazzy magic with persistent keys and subtle dub effects, "Mostly You" ups the jack factor with layers of hypnotic rippling washes and "Flamboyant" dims the lights with a sultry, loopy groove and the perfect balance of cosmic flare. Stunning.

  4. Broken Sea (5:32)
Review: There's something especially magical about "Besakih's Dragon's Clouds", the gentle, melodious and chiming lead cut from Giorgio Bacchin's latest outing under the Raw M.T alias. More akin to Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" after a night mainlining loved-up narcotics than a throbbing dancefloor banger, it brilliantly sets the tone for what follows. "Banjar Hot Springs" is a breezy, melodious and tactile chunk of dreamy deep house cheeriness, "Ulluwatu's God" a melodically intricate but rhythmically hypnotic chugger, and "Broken Sea" a stylistically accurate tribute to the wavy days of Italian ambient house (albeit with a few nods towards likeminded Japanese producers from the same period).

  1. Camille's Dab (6:51)
  2. Motha Supastar (7:19)
Review: Since last starring on Robsoul midway through 2016, Parisian turntablist-turned-deep house producer Reda Dare has been busy. He first shared a 12" with French legend Chris Carrier before launching his own REda dare [sic] label. Now he returns to Robsoul with a no-nonsense, club-friendly two tracker that sits somewhere between deep house and the currently hyped Parisian tech-house sound. A-side "Camille's Dab" is a perfect example of this, with the producer layering warm electric piano chords, U.S garage style melodic flourishes and cut-up vocal samples over a sleazy tech-house bassline, rising acid lines and bumpin', peak-time beats. Flipside "Motha Superstar" follows a similar sonic blueprint, with dreamy deep house chords and pads drifting in and out of an otherwise typically Parisian tech-house track.

  1. John Selway - "Shimmerdown" (9:58)
  2. Seltav - "SPQR" (10:04)
Review: Future Times' Max D recently referred to John Selway's "Shimmerdown" as "one of the finest Rhodes-soaked, late-into-the-function cuts ever made". We tend to agree. The track, a minimal house/electro hybrid rich in deep bass, trippy noises and subtly psychedelic acid lines, has gained near mythical status since it was originally released two decades ago. Happily, Future Times has struck a deal to reissue it alongside another vintage Selway cut: 2000 deep tech-house classic "SPQR". The latter was produced in cahoots with Andrea Taverna under the Seltav alias. While a little bolder and more musically expansive than "Shimmerdown", the track shares a similarly wave vibe and dreamy, early morning appeal.

Review: It would be fair to say that Henry Maldonado, known more widely as Son Of Sound, has been one of the few revelations to come out of New York City since the early 2000's. For a city which gave us so much in the 80's and 90's, there have been relatively few new names to carry on the dynasty, but Maldonado's sleek and thoughtful style for imprints like Disrtrict 30 and Speak Recordings has provided a bit of life and love to the American Dream. Moreover, the man appears on Delusions Of Grandeur, one of our all time favourite labels when it comes to house, and one that we wish was more present again. The deal here is simple; Son Of House provides us with three sultry, laid-back house groovers with plenty of soul and homebred sensibility, rolling and pushing its solid grooves over bouncy, seductive melodies and feel-good charms.

For this latest outing, Zachary Saginaw and Bill Spender come through as Spencer & Saginaw, putting Michigan firmly back on the electronic map with the headstrong "Real Talk", a tune which perhaps doesn't bang as hard as others, but that certainly has all the grove and charisma of the some of the finest Omar S tunes. There's also an instrumental cut, and the hollow landscapes of the AmbACID version of "B_W".

Review: Concrete club resident Sweely is fast becoming one of France's most talked-about DJ/producers. The hype is partly based on his club-rocking skills, but also on the quality of his on-point productions. This latest excursion on Lobster Theremin is shamelessly floor-friendly in tone, with the young Frenchman effortlessly joining the dots between acid house, bass-heavy UK house and garage, and more soulful U.S deep house flavours. Check, in particular, the throbbing, lo-fi bounce of "You Don't Really Want Me", where ragged acid lines and soulful vocal samples wrap around a bustling groove, and the bombastic, breakbeat-driven peak-time assault that is "Stronger Than Me". Elsewhere, he finds time to flit between TB-303 abuse and Rhodes playing on "Acid City" and indulges his love of blazed, hip-hop style beatmaking via closer "You Do".

Review: It's been almost seven years since the last single from Japanese duo Traks Boys, making this return to Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label long overdue. Happily, it's arguably the production pair's strongest release to date. The A-side boasts two new treats: the thrillingly choppy and thrusting, off-kilter warehouse roller "Be With U", where vocal stabs, jumpy riffs and starry synth lines ride a bustling groove, and the gorgeously sunny Balearic house climax that is sunrise-friendly title track "Weekend Lights". On the flip, Axel Boman remixes the latter track, turning in a meandering, loose and gently melodious interpretation that bubbles away for 13 spellbinding minutes.

Review: For his latest trick, London-based house producer Maik Yells has decided to tell tales of brave Ulises on Germany's fast-rising Taverna Tracks stable. He casts off into the unknown via the deep, woozy and gently spacey tech-house/deep house fusion of "Atopos", before foot-stepping into jazzier worlds via the swinging, crackling beats, warm bass and jammed out electric piano motifs of "Latika". Over on the back page (sorry, B-side), Ed Herbst delivers a sturdy but dreamy, ultra-deep dub of "Atopos", before "Yulises" sees Yells pepper a bustling, Robsoul style tech-house groove with weird noises and eccentric, Maurice Fulton style synth solos.

Review: As an album title, In Case You Don't Know What To Play is rather good. We suspect that Damiano von Erckert had his tongue firmly pressed against the inside of his cheek when he came up with it, but it somehow seems fitting. You see, the album - the producer's third solo full-length excursion - contains a range of quirky, off-kilter, sample-heavy cuts that suit a variety of moods and situations. While his roots are in groovy and off-kilter deep house, the album's 10 tracks cheekily touch on a myriad of styles and sounds, from wonky Afro-house, broken beat and Balearic disco, to stomping, Terrence Parker style piano anthems and stripped-back jazz-house.
