Destiny EP (12")
Cat: QV 102. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Destiny (7:06)
  2. Destiny (Thomas Wood remix) (6:34)
  3. Feelings (6:57)
  4. I Know (7:12)
Review: Italian vinyl imprint Quality Vibe has had a consistent run of releases in the last few years, with some our favourites coming courtesy of Berlin legend DJ Honesty, British house underdog Tommy Vicari Jr and that great inaugural release by Harmonie Park boss Rick Wade. It's now over to rising Spanish duo 2vilas to take the reins, following up releases on top labels such as WAXISGUD, Off Recordings and Organic Musik. On the Destiny EP, we have the title track kicking off the A side in style - this deep, dusty and hypnotic jam is a respectful tribute to the Cab Drivers/Cabinet Records sound and is totally sublime. Fellow label alumnus Thomas Wood appears next, with a remix of the track where you can expect yet more smoky and hazy deepness that's perfectly suited to the early evening of the afterhours alike. On the flip, the tough and swing fuelled shuffle of "I Know" closes out this fine EP in style with its delay drenched chords used sparingly for dubby and hypnotic effect, in a way that Zky and Daniel Paul themselves would approve of. Tip!

Love Souls (12")
Cat: THPVS 04. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Allstarr Motomusic - "Night Romance" (feat Debra Jones Davis) (8:00)
  2. Allstarr Motomusic - "Light Of The Soul" (feat Sarignia Bonfa) (6:08)
  3. Manuel Costela - "Sunshine Love" (6:52)
  4. Manuel Costela - "Hurt" (7:31)
Review: In the past, Allstar Motomusic has largely delivered 12" singles that tend towards the more musically vibrant end of the techno and tech-house spectrum. Interestingly, the two tracks here - the Ron Trent style brilliance of "Night Romance (featuring Debra Jones Davis") and lilting dream house soul of "Light of the Soul (featuring Sarigina Bonfa) - retain his usual soulfulness but soften the rhythmic approach. It goes without saying that it's a switch that has paid dividends. Italian producer Manuel Costa handles the B-side, first delivering the tactile, synth-heavy deep house soul of "Sunshine Love", before delivering a chunk of bass-heavy, Rhodes-rich warmth underpinned by a swinging electro beat. Top notch stuff, all told.

  2. Paolo Rocco - "Ill" (7:58)
  3. Moises - "Easy Beauty" (6:33)
  4. Esposito & Nadje - "HBP" (7:46)
Review: Crew love is true love: Beste Freunde 05 is upon us and it's not likely to hang around. Once again it's a whole new collective of like-minded souls together for a fresh expedition. Anil Aras leads the mission with a rippling Detroitian understated number simply called "Track 1". He's flanked by Paolo Rocco and Moises. The former ups the temperature and gets us in a lather with the insistent pace of "Ill" while the latter sooths our souls and oils our joints with the slippery hypnosis session "Easy Beauty". Finally Esposito & Nadje run point with the heaviest tool of the trip - the bubbling technoid "HBP". Friends till the end!

Djoukourou (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: HGHLF 018. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Oumou Sangare - "Djoukourou" (Auntie Flo remix) (5:43)
  2. Desert Island (6:30)
Review: Next up on Huntleys + Palmers Highlife edit series is label staple Auntie Flo, serving up a remix of Grammy Award-winning, Malian Wassoulou musician Oumou Sangare's "Djoukourou". Her career has spanned two decades and the track was featured on last years 'Mogoya LP', her seventh studio album. Dreamy and drifting spiritual life music that doesn't get much better than this - it was apparently rinsed by Innervisions boss Dixon a lot during the Summer of 2016. It's complimented by a brand new original on the flip entitled "Desert Island" which keeps on with the lush and evocative vibes. Its hypnotic xylophone melody casting its spell on you, while slack beats provide a momentum for a real sense of travelling without moving. This the 18th edition in the series so far, follows up other great edits by the likes of Cain, Alma Negra and Tanzania Soundsystem.

Elysium (12" 再プレス)
Cat: NERO 037. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Elysium (Full Experience) (13:21)
  2. Elysium (Inner Experience) (4:09)
  3. Elysium (Paradise dub) (7:42)
Review: With a name like "Elysium", you'd expect this EP from experienced producer Lars Bartkuhn to be blissfully melodious, unashamedly positive and musically expansive. It is, of course, with the original version of the title track expertly joining the dots between humid deep house, head-in-the-clouds jazz and the sun-soaked waviness of the Italian dream house movement. Bartkuhn makes great use of live instrumentation - horns, woodwind instruments and pianos, in particular - which are smothered in tropical field recordings and work in unison with a jaunty house groove. On the flipside you'll find two alternative takes: the effortlessly saucer-eyed, slowly building "Inner Experience" version, and the looser, more live sounding Paradise Dub, where the producer trades saxophone and synthesizer solos. Both are, naturally, superb.

Cat: STOWN 017. Rel: 22 Jan 18
  1. Crantown
  2. Lux Bounce (feat Imhotep)
  3. Pastie (feat EN.V)
Review: Slow Town's 17th release from Melbournes Luis CL is an ode to analogue jams. The Cran town EP shows what Luis CL (one half of the Zanzibar Chanel duo and co-founder of Ruff Records) is know for: Dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some Detroit influences. The three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.

  2. Serendipity (Sebo K remix) (6:08)
  3. Serendipity (MP remix) (7:29)
  4. Waiting 4 Visa (Bergqvist remix) (5:24)
Review: Parisian house hero D'Julz (real name Julien Veniel) is a veteran producer, whose recording and DJing career has spanned over 20 years. He originally released the Houdini EP via his Bass Culture imprint back in 2015 and it enjoyed moderate success - but he's now determined that the time is right for the remix package: better late than never! We must say it was worth the wait. Windy City ghetto house icon DJ Skull is still at it. But he's certainly not as bangin' these days, as he was in the '90s - when he had seminal releases on DJax Up Beats and Relief Records. His rendition of the track is a sexy and slinky tech house cut, geared for the late night with sleek rhythms and lush hypnotic chords. The Mobilee affiliated Sebo K out of Berlin steps up to the challenge also, delivering a nice remix of "Serendipity". Likewise, forget the bubbly mid-noughties minimal techno that he first made his name with: his remix goes for a more classic Stateside sound, packed full of boompty bass and swing fuelled rhythms. Finally, Swedish deep house expert Henrik Bergqvist delivers some dusty, low slung acid on his rendition of "Waiting 4 Visa".

  4. Jus Jam - "Y'all Ain't Ready" (5:51)
  5. Jus Jam - "Make Ya Move" (5:50)
Review: No violence or fighting talk here, just pure love for innovative dancefloor gold from the heart of Prague. Deejay Astral sets the scene with soft focus breezes and a wonderful bumping subby low-end on "Polygon", Dx2ov gets a little freaky with a super cool spoken word sample, twisting around a wonked beat pattern and warped textures on "Teacher" while Jeals strips things back for a warehouse shattering machine funk meltdown on "Woolan". Finally Jus Jam close the show with two stellar tracks... The misty, loose-footed shuffle of "Y'all Ain't Ready" and the classic 1990 synth bass of "Make Ya Move". Czech it out.

  3. Moment (Losoul remix) (11:19)
Review: Under his longstanding DJ Honesty alias, veteran producer Hans Schaaf has delivered some fantastic music over the past two decades. Happily, he appears to be getting more productive as the years roll by, with this three-tracker on Bass Culture marking his third 12" of 2017. With its bustling bassline, relentless cymbals, Motor City motifs and carefully placed dub effects, lead cut "Moment" sits somewhere between hypnotic European techno and ocean-deep house. This hybrid vibe is even more noticeable on Losoul's epic flipside remix, which subtly toughens up the track and stretches it out to 11 mesmerizing minutes. Further thrills are provided via bonus cut "Gamma", a more bumpin' deep house roller with heavy New Jersey influences.

  3. Tryna Get My Act Together (6:30)
Review: Slyngshot seems to specialize in creating tracks that neatly sidestep convention, blending dusty deep house sounds with hip-hop influenced breaks, and left-of-centre 4/4 rhythm tracks. He's at it again on the Love Unlimited E.P, which sees him return to his Yappin' imprint after an excursion on Place To Be earlier this year. He begins with the woozy, cyclical chords, fusty textures and crackly post hip-hop beats of "180554", before diving into Dolo Percussion style drum machine abuse on the deliciously energetic and rhythmic "Love Unlimited". Those after more straightforward house thrills should check flipside "Tryna Get My Act Together", where crusty cymbals and drowsy, looped melodies ride a bombastic groove.

  5. Factory Jazz (4:00)
Review: Straight back to 94! Jordan Thrillseekers Fields laid down his second EP "Dub International" 23 years ago and it still sounds future to this day. "Pablo's Groove" takes a classic Cuban lick and roughs it up sideways with some awesome riffle kick rolls, "Mood Swing" is a broken house music assault with all the cuts and stutters you can cram into a jam while "Factory Jazz" is a timeless slice of rolling breakbeat funk smashed straight from the heart of a groovebox. "The Swing" finishes this classic remastered reissue with two versions, both via two more of Fields' many aliases: his Thrillseekers version layers distinctly UK-styled rave synths while his Club Orchestra takes a looser, groovier tact that allows the powerful Latin vocal sample to cut through. This is what reissues were invented for.

Review: More sublime and superbly executed dub techno excursions from a modern master. Dutch producer and DJ Roger Gerressen returns to his Irenic imprint after a tremendous EP as Novio Dub Tribe (with frequent collaborator Sinan Alakus) and homeboy Alex Jansen of Dilated Pupils fame. This also follows up a tremendous full length for Sushitech under his Monoaware alias. Cold, dubby and greyscale perspectives from the deep offered up here on the first side of the Yuach EP, drifting away in gloriously hypnotic fashion with delay drenched feedback loops and long trails of reverb. On the flip, the man from Nijmegen saves the best for last on the evocative and cavernous slow burner "A" which demonstrates his stunning use of analogue texture and a sublime fusion of frequencies that spans a wonderful 10 minute long duration. You'd wish it would never end. Brilliant work as always from Gerressen.

Review: Shall Not Fade welcome a genuine house pillar; Warren Harris AKA Hanna. His first release in quite some time, he gently reminds us of his influence with four beautiful, unhurried soul-laced gems. "Knowing" is a day dreamer, all flutes, fretless bass, free and easy while "Love & Death" takes us deep inside the synths on a bed of loosely arranged percussion. Flip for the softly broken shuffles and twinkles of "Chasing The Sunset" and the left-sided stuttering-beat funk jam "Sway Life". Let's pray we don't have to wait so long for the next Hanna dispatch.

Review: Last time out Kieron Ifill AKA K15 was sharing vinyl space with legendary British techno producer Mr G. This time round, he's back on a solo mission, laying down three deep and expansive tracks for the mighty Eglo Records. Opener "Sunbeams" is undoubtedly a slab of hazy summer sunshine, with Ifill encasing a jaunty samba groove in lilting Rhodes riffs and Kaidi Tatham style synthesizer solos. The influence of Tatham's Herbie Hancock-inspired approach can also be heard on the intergalactic jazz-funk positivity of "Sunbeams 3", while "Essencia" is deliciously woozy and glassy eyed, with yearning melodies and analogue synthesizer chords rising above skittish jazz drums.

  3. Dedication (Sound Factory mix) (5:59)
  4. Dedication (NASA mix) (8:17)
Review: Those who've kept track with Krystal Klear's career will note that the Irish producer regularly pays tribute to historic aspects of dance music culture. Rarely, though, has he made his intentions quite as clear as this. As the name suggests, Club Studies features cuts that wholeheartedly doff a cap towards the records played at legendary New York clubs. On the A-side you'll find two versions of "Just a Little"; a groovy, soulful and sparkling mix inspired by the weekly Sunday Service bashes, and a chunky, hypnotic, percussion-led affair that nails the sound Danny Tenaglia was championing at Twilo in the late 1990s. Turn to the flip for the muscular, Junior Vasquez style dark garage of "Dedication (Sound Factory Mix)" and the riff-heavy Brooklyn techno throb of the "NASA Mix" of the same track.

Review: More from Mall Grab, the prolific producer who has become deep house royalty since making his debut back in 2015. As usual, the tracks showcased here are rich in both atmosphere and melodious intent. He begins via the woozy, minor key chords, quietly bustling beats and dreamy sampled vocal loops of peak-time standout "Caught Slippin", before showcasing his love of electro on the tuneful and evocative bubbler "Out of Time". Flip to side B for the jazzy, musically rich deep house bump of "Ahmad" - the kind of track with which he initially made his name - and a dusty, lo-fi, acid-powered remix of the same track from Damiano von Erckert.

Review: Aussie deep house producer Jordon Alexander has enjoyed a successful 2015, delivering a pair of deliciously woozy and evocative - yet pleasingly floor-friendly - EPs on Collect-Call and 1080p. Here, he rounds of the year with another sumptuous selection of tracks that should please anyone who likes their deep house warm, dubby and trippy. Both "Happiness" and "Orange County" make great use of dreamy, delay-laden vocal samples, placing them atop effortlessly tactile grooves and toasty chords. He subtly increases the tempo on the densely percussive but decidedly hazy "Alone", before delivering more horizontal, fireside deepness in the shape of "Real".

Review: Having launched late last year, Leipzig label Velours return with another supreme disco house joint. Emerging French groove monsieur Name takes the controls this time, cooking up four tasty courses. "Side Effect" shakes and struts with filtered finesse, "Clos Des Trams" looks towards Chicago for inspiration with velvet chords and persistent, heavy jack, "Nobody" adds a little late night drama with some precision symphonic elements and while "Vibraphone Bowed" finishes on a classic jacking jam that's infected with an insane sub bassline that truly comes into its own when you play it on a big rig. Review: There's plenty to admire on this tasty new EP from experienced Spaniard Kiko Navarro, a producer whose releases seem to get better with every passing year. He begins with the rolling deep house bounce of "Show You The Way", where a looped vocal sample and squeezable synthesizer motifs rise above a bouncy, classic David Morales style groove, before wrapping kalimba style melodies around a stomping jazz-house groove on "Everything Happens For a Reason". His love of vintage New York house surfaces on the bumpin' bliss of "Black is Back" - all cascading jazz guitar solos and urgent hip-hop vocal samples - whole "La Cosa" is a wonderfully percussive trip into Latin house territory.

Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.

  3. El Sonido (9:05)
Review: More party techno from Italian A.M. specialist Riva Starr, who takes time out from his respected Snatch! Records for a top release on Damian Lazarus' esteemed imprint. The rolling main room people mover "Afrika" kicks things off in fine fashion. This bass heavy exercise reaches near tribal moments with its syncopated rhythmic grooves. He returns to the sound that made him popular in London (his hometown these days) in the mid noughties on the druggy afterhours minimal of "Eurovoodoo" channelling the vibe of those early m_nus records - but with some spooky witch doctor vocals atop. Finally on the flip, get ready for some spiritual life music that's probably aimed more at an African raindance rather than sun kissed White Isle hedonism that he's most usually affiliated with on "El Sonido". However, we are pretty sure it would equally go down well at Lazarus' regular appearances in Tulum and the Black Rock Desert.

Review: Spain-based French DJ Sebb Junior maintains the heat from last year's Rewind album on Papa by launching his own label La Vie D'Artiste Music with four brand new original. "Sunshine" lives up to its name with warmth and a vibrancy that sparkles with the filtered groove and cheeky slap bass. "Heaven" is fittingly monikered, too with its divine vocals, angelic chords and pearly gate bass. Flip for a filtered disco-tinged strutter in the form of "Get Yo Body" and the soul stirring, stately jacking finale "If We Try". Ah, la joie de vivre!

  1. Sebo K  - "Glow"
  2. Swoy  - "Airy"
  3. Dj Honesty  - "Syn"
  4. Olivier Romero  - "Killa Pilla"
Review: Politics Of Dancing continues its mission to push a particular strain of highly workable minimal house for the premier league club contingent, and so it goes on this new various artists 12". Sebo K leads the charge with the shimmering tones of "Glow" while Swoy takes things in a more dreamy direction with the woozy pads that sit under a shuffling groove on "Airy". DJ Honesty has a rougher idea in mind, bringing some low-down tuffness to the record without losing that stripped back heads down approach that the label favours. Olivier Romero's "Killa Pilla" rolls out on a strange cinematic sample and a steadfast beat that should slot into any number of sets just fine.

  1. Downtime Turn Around & Go Backwards (11:24)
  2. Jean's Train Of Thought (6:56)
  3. Jean's Afterthought (7:33)
Review: Freaks man Luke Solomon was still in the early stages of his career when he donned the Jean Caffeine alias and released Downtime, Turn Around & Go Backwards. Here, the 1998 EP is given the re-release treatment on reissue imprint Mint Condition. It remains one of Solomon's deeper and more considered collections of tracks. The title track, here featured in freshly re-mastered form, is a tech-tinged deep house treat, with rich chords and tumbling melody lines stretching out across a smooth, bass-heavy groove. "Jean's Train of Thought" peppers a swinging, Chicago-influenced groove with punchy synth horns and Sheffield style bleep melodies, while "Jean's Afterthought" is a deep and dreamy shuffler.

  2. Last Flight (6:12)
  3. 10 PM (7:00)
Review: Now striking volume eight in his highly collectable floor-firing self-titled white label style series, Paris' Steaw gets his classical jack on with three more thumping machine-made numbers. "Holding Back" is raw, visceral and pounding, "Last Flight" is an energetic uplift track with nuances of Detroit lurking deep in the mix while "10 PM" closes on a 2020 style tip, all lucid, warm and molten but subtly pumping. Another perfect addition to the series.
