  1. Told You (8:18)
  2. So (7:41)
  3. So (Mariano Mateljan remix) (7:09)
Review: Fun Records main man Alexis Cabrera follows up releases on top labels like Raum Musik, Salty Nuts and Little Helpers with an inaugural release for new label Studio 76. The Berlin based producer presents a great release here, from the minimal-retro influenced bounce of "Told You" or "So" which take their cues from the new sounds of Frankfurt as popularised by labels like Traffic, Hardworksoftdrink or Pager. On the flip, Croatia's Mariano Mateljan turns "So" into trippy and reductionist tackle, that's perfect for getting weird at the afterhours.

CLOC 01 (12")
Cat: CLOC 01. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. El Patchanga (10:06)
  2. El Capitano (14:57)
Review: Mysterious minimal house from Cloc, who inaugurates their eponymous imprint here. The sunny yet subtle bounce of A side cut "El Patchanga" rolls deep with a faint Latin flair that you could imagine being played DJs on the Romanian house scene. On the flip, "El Capitano" takes things into extra reduced territory, which would probably work better at a chill-out party as opposed to the after party - with its downtempo vibe and drifting balearic flair throughout.

  1. Rodul (7:22)
  2. Drumul Spre (7:19)
  3. Booty Q (6:32)
  4. Drumul Spre (Herck remix) (8:32)
Review: When someone from Bucharest is being proclaimed as one of the city's finest tech-house producers, you know he or she is going to deliver the tech-house goods. That's certainly the case with Guy From Downstairs, a fast-rising artist who has yet to put a foot wrong (release-wise, at least). You'll find more rock-solid club fare on the Romanian's latest EP, beginning with the fluttering dream house motifs, crunchy tech-house grooves and sampled spoken word vocals of "Rodul". If you're after something more stripped back and percussive, "Drumul Spre" ticks all the right boxes, with Harck's flipside rework, an even more low-slung and quietly funk-fuelled tech-house take, also impressing. "Booty Q", a slightly more intergalactic chunk of early morning tech-house, completes another decent Guy From Downstairs EP.

  1. Rude (3:49)
  2. Oo Licky (7:32)
  3. See You On Monday (11:32)
Review: It's time for your regular reminder that, through every guise, scheme, political or artistic statement Matthew Herbert has gone through, he has never released a record short of exceptional. This 23 year old reissue of one of his earliest EPs is proof. Bumping with UKG roots, soul oozes from every spacious, loose-limbed groove, these are glimpses into Herbert's soul; the off-beat Zed Bias style mischief of "Rude", the cosmic faze of "Oo Licky" and the dreamy Iz & Diz style jounces of "See You On Monday", this is every bit the timeless record. Look forward to part two.

The Call (12")
Cat: OUIE 009. Rel: 08 Aug 18
  1. The Call (7:51)
  2. David Mayer & Sooma - "Sooner" (7:39)
  3. Black Queen (7:08)
Review: With this three-tracker, former Mobilee and Connected regular David Mayer makes his first appearance on Acid Pauli and Nico Stojan's reliably off-kilter imprint, Ouie. The central attraction is undoubtedly title track "The Call", a percussively dense but rhythmically loose workout rich in wonky chants, indigenous instrumentation and bubbly electronics. There is, of course, plenty to cheer elsewhere on the EP. Check first the bouncy Afro-house drums and tropical electronics of Sooma collaboration "Sooner", before getting your ears around the moody and percussive "Black Queen", which benefits greatly from some Innervisions style tech-house electronics.

Thang EP (12")
Cat: 8BIT 138. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. Thang (8:32)
  2. We Are The Puppets (6:29)
  3. Mapuche (7:43)
Review: Although Amsterdam's Daniel Sanchez has appeared regularly on classic tech-house labels like Area Remote or Bla Bla Records since the late 00s, he had yet to make an appearance on Mannheim's ever-impressive 8bit Records. Home to peeps like Nick Curly, Alex Niggemann, Audiofly, and even Steve Lawler, they are the masters of the modern Balearic dance. Sanchez's "Thang" obviously slides into the roster with utter ease, the groove smashing out intricate waves of glitch and heavy kicks, while "We Are Puppets" strays from the formula to drop a faster, more techno-minded rhythm for the peak time, and "Mapuche" slides its liquid-like drums along a cavernous string of voices and phased-out sonics. Effective.

  1. Swung (7:16)
  2. Mario X (6:10)
  3. Stellaris (7:17)
  4. Leepstic (8:36)
Review: Following up great releases by Thomas Stieler and Liou, London by way of Peru's Blind Vision present a collaboration between two of the scene's finest new talents. French-Singaporean duo Dixia Sirong have delivered a couple of great EP's on Chez Damier's Inner Strength Music and they team up here with rising Dutch DJ Le Louche - who delivered a terrific track "Crosswind" on Daydream 03. The Sunday Connection EP features the fittingly titled "Swung" which features some wonderfully skippy drums by Le Louche beneath Dixia Sirong's dubbed-out sound design. The bass-driven bounce of "Stellaris" is powered by moody and glacial aesthetics and "Leepstic" is a slinky and atmospheric tech house journey that's perfect mood lighting for the warm up.

FUNKYFUNGI 003 (12" in die-cut sleeve)
Cat: FUNKYFUNGI 003. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. Xerula (7:21)
  2. Xerula (Funk E remix) (8:13)
  3. Xerula (Lowris & Ashac Shakenlo remix) (9:42)
Review: Two years ago, George Stuby established the brilliantly named Funky Fungi label. Surprisingly, this 12"marks his first release since sharing top billing with his collaborative Gravy Underground project on Funky Fungi 001. "Xerula" is an intriguing affair, with Stuby contrasting crunchy machine drums and sampled slap bass with ghostly, ethereal chords and the kind of atmospheric electronic glitches that have become so common in contemporary tech-house releases. The glitchy, funk-fuelled pulse of wonky, off-kilter Eastern European tech-house can be heard on Lowris and Ashac Shakenlo's ten-minute flipside remix, while Funk-E's interpretation is an altogether smoother, groovier and more hypnotic proposition.

Moldavi (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AMR 002. Rel: 06 Aug 18
  1. Moldavi I (10:45)
  2. Moldavi II (10:25)
Review: The moody and avant garde side of minimal techno further explored on new imprint Amurg, which will appeal to fans of the scene's outer limits similarly explored by the likes of Ben Vedren, Suciu or Vincentiulian. For their label's second release, Barcaceanu Ginel & Bodescu Iulian aka Suburbs present two versions here of "Moldavi". The first version is a hypnotic and reductionist epic, featuring alien blips and bloops over a rolling bass driven groove that's perfect Sunday morning weirdness. On the flip, the second version is a downtempo affair that's more suited to freaking out in the corner of your bedroom - with its chilling sound design and neoclassical elements.

  6. Ole Biege - "Heat" (6:45)
  7. MULYA - "Hamune" (7:30)
  8. Douglas Greed - "Arpo 33" (6:30)
Review: Halle's Monaberry imprint receives nowhere near the amount of praise that it should. In all honesty, this has been one of the most consistent imprints to grace the tech-house sphere, with artists like Super Flu bringing some innovation and cutting-edge to that particular dance formula. Here, we have the label's seventh edition of the Herberts Best series, with a whole selection of new artists being given the chance to shine - including the ever-present Super Flu, of course. Stand-out tracks include "Gattara" by Bebetta, a tribalesque deep house joint with mounds of hypnotics; Jobe's "Maasai" makes for a supremely dubbed-out ocean of sonics; Sobek's "Handmade Desire" adds some industrial waves to what is a relatively 'housey' EP; "Arpo33" by Douglas Greed ends with a painfully on-point tech groove that dancers will find impossible not to shake to.

  1. Asembi Ara Amba (Henrik Schwarz version) (6:02)
  2. Asembi Ara Amba (Henrik Schwarz Beatless) (6:02)
Review: It was over two years ago when Henrik Schwarz first revealed his remix of "Asembi Ara Amba", a 2015 cut by Ghanaian artist Yusuf Bayani and German funk stalwarts Poets of Rhythm under the alternative Polyversal Souls alias. Here the now legendary rework finally gets an official release. On the A-Side you'll find Schwarz's now-familiar "Version", where Bayani's superb vocals and sampled Afro-funk horns rise above classic-sounding (think Inner City circa 1989) electronic riffs, rolling house beats and a chunky, dub-wise bassline. You'll find an inspired, previously unheard bonus on the flip in the shape of Schwarz's 'Beatless' mix, which re-imagines the track as a spacey, other-worldly chunk of mesmerizing Afro-ambient.

Review: Innervisions bosses Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer return as Ame, and present their first full length entitled Dream House - described as a home listening styled journey. The German duo spent three years working on the LP and it features collaborations with legends of German electronic music such as Roedelius and Gudrun Gut, as well as Bolivian singer David Lemaitre and Jens Kuross - who was a member of Wiedemann's other venture The Howling, with Ry Cuming. Highlights include their dramatic collaboration with Matthew Herbert "The Line", the upbeat disco number "Blind Eye" (featuring Planningtorock), the chill balearica of "Positivland" and the evocative/melodic dreamscape of "No War".

  42. Alan Fitzpatrick - "Vibes"
Review: Ever the progressive futurist, John Digweed has decided to celebrate two decades of his Bedrock parties and record label not with an epic retrospective, but rather a compilation entirely made up of new, previously unreleased recordings. In typical Digweed fashion, the first two discs feature these 42 tracks mixed into a seamless journey by the man himself, with the same material featuring in full-length, un-mixed form on discs three and four. For fans of the producer's melodious and atmospheric take on house, techno and downtempo grooves, there's much to enjoy, including sublime cuts from the likes of Yunus Guvenen, Guy J, Marc Romboy, Oliver Lieb, Nick Muir (Digweed's long-serving studio partner), Quiver and Pig&Dan.
