Review: Brazilian legends Azymuth have been back in focus for a few years now and even playing the European festival circuit. Their legacy was assured long ago with countless super silky jazz, MPB, funk, Latin and salsa fusion sounds that work on any dance floor as well as outdoors in the shining sun. Azymuth: Live at Copacabana Palace is a thrilling testament to the jazz-funk trio's legendary status as it captures the group's electrifying virtuosity and infectious energy. From the hypnotic to the soulful, it's a masterclass in musicality and improvisation that really highlights the chemistry between members Ivan Conti, Alex Malheiros, and Kiko Continentino. A must-have for any Azymuth fan.

Review: A new single release from the amazing Betty Black, following her first two releases 'Cry Me A River' and 'Sweet Dreams', both also available on Skyline Recordings. Whereas the first two releases were covers, the label now delivers a wholly original slice of Betty material, 'Lonely Man'. This single-sided soul stomper is a veritable wall of sound, in which Black sings of emotional miserliness, rainy days, bleeding hearts and missed opportunities against a lively backing, making for a sure-to-be hit.

Review: Jazz trumpet legend Donald Byrd has one of those seemingly endless discography that takes in solo and group albums and is full of treasure that is well worth exploring no matter your particularly stylistic penchant. 1963's A New Perspective is a landmark album that brings gospel and soul elements into his usual jazz sound. It features a stellar lineup including Herbie Hancock and Hank Mobley and the centerpiece is the iconic 'Cristo Redentor,' a soulful composition that showcases Byrd's lyrical trumpet playing. With its fusion of genres, the album broke new ground and paved the way for future jazz explorations that Pitchfork have said is one of the best albums of the 1960s. Byrd's innovative approach and the ensemble's tight chemistry make that so.

Review: Miles Davis' Volume 2 (Classic Vinyl Series) encapsulates the quintessence of his bebop brilliance. Originally recorded in 1953, this album showcases Davis at the peak of his improvisational prowess and backed by a stellar ensemble including Horace Silver, Percy Heath, and Art Blakey. Tracks like 'Donna' and 'It Never Entered My Mind' exemplify Davis' innovative approach to harmony and melody, while others show his ability to infuse standard tunes with newfound depth. This reissue, part of the Classic Vinyl Series, pays homage to Davis' enduring influence on jazz with an all new pressing.

Review: Following the success of their previous Tokyo Glow compilation, Wewantsounds once again team up with Japanese Tokyo-based DJ Notoya to dig up the rich Electric Bird catalogue, and come with a subsequent, versatile selection of sunny jazz-funk gems recorded between 1978 and 1987 for the label. A tasty selection featuring Yasuaki Shimizu, Toshiyuki Honda and Mikio Masuda, together with a few American musicians such as Ronnie Foster and Bobby Lyle, most tracks here are making their debut outside of Japan, the album comes with a full annotation by Notoya and is a multifarious meander through every angle of the polygonal gamut of J-jazz, disco, city pop, and funk. Highlights include Masuda's 'Let's Get Together' and Foster's prototypical wonky funk number, 'Night Life'.

Review: Celebrating 50 years of Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble's legacy, Open Me, A Higher Consciousness Of Sound And Spirit is their new full-length LP, ever-shifting the many gears and tempos of the jazz-blues continuum, in a dialectical state of perpetual spontaneity. Billed as an album of both ancient and future music in the same breath, it blends El'Zabar's original compositions with motifs from timeless classics by Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, and Eugene McDaniels. A healing vision of haphazard improvisations and percussive buildups to sublime peaks, all core members - Kahil El'Zabar, Corey Wilkes and Alex Harding, backed by James Sanders and Ishmael Ali - make for an essential contribution to the spiritual sonosphere.

Review: Critically acclaimed British jazz pianist, composer and arranger, Greg Foat has been making quite a bit of waves in the jazz scene as well as his groundbreaking albums that feature artists in other genres. His latest album 'Live At Can Rudayla Ibiza ', is an homage to the magical sound of the Mediterranean. Ibiza has long been known for its night life but perhaps not known as well outside the chill out scene sound, that the area has a sound all to itself. Inspired by his highly regarded and recent album with Gigi Masin, Greg Foat explores the themes further. Pool Side parts 1 and 2 shimmer with beautiful soundscapes that set the mood wonderfully. 'Dining Table Grooves' gives a hint at the late-night sounds to come in Ibiza while the sunset tracks close the album out with an almost chill wave sound that we absolutely adore. If you are looking for an album to put on as guests arrive to your beach home, this is the album you want to play. Greg Foat is a beacon of light for the future of jazz fusion.

Originally released in 1974 and reissued in 2024, the album showcases a unique blend of Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, Latin jazz, and even classic rock. The big band sound, featuring guitars and percussion, creates an over-the-top energy that is both infectious and exhilarating. This album is not just a piece of Cuban music history, but a testament to the power of music to fuse different genres and create something truly unique and unforgettable.

Review: Craft Recordings offer up an in-demand reissue of Joe Henderson's Power To The People, an abiding classic in the domain of New York hard bop, and one of three standouts in Henderson's Milestone Records era, through which the completist listener may chart and increasing political awareness and stylistic horizon-expansion on the artist's behalf. Recorded during a turbulent phase in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Power To The People raises a clenched fist in favour of democracy and equality, whilst at the same time incorporates many an unforeheard sound and instrument for Henderson, from electric piano to bass and enlisting the aid of fusion greats like Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter - all amounting to the jazz equivalent of a revolutionary event, after which nothing would ever be the same.

Review: The widely adored jazz and pop crooner Norah Jones is back with another super soothing new album. Vision arrives on the legendary Blue Note and is the ninth full-length from the singer-songwriter but the first in collaboration with Leon Michels who is an instrumental maestro behind the El Michels Affair. He brings plenty of musical richness and charming hooks and melodies to the smoky and soulful vocals of Jones. All 12 tunes are vibrant and joyous as Jones sings about feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. It's a more uplifting work following on from the melancholic vibe of her last outing Pick Me Up Off The Floor which was released early in the early pandemic days of 2020.

Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. For proof, check superb recent singles 'Running' and 'Staring at the Wall'.

Review: Charles Lloyd returns with his latest musical offering, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, a majestic double LP of new studio recordings from the legendary saxophonist. Despite this being Lloyd's eleventh album for Blue Note, it still makes for a sudden comeback, as it is the first new set of sessions to appear since 2017's twin releases, 'Vanished Garden' and 'Tone Poem'. On The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow, Lloyd proffers a muted, tender sound, abiding by emotive progressions backed up by homespun lower bout hits and natural piano playing. Lloyd hardly needs to lift a finger to glean the reams of emotion that swell from his instrument.

Review: Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Jards Macale's eponymous album gets a special reissue to remind us why it remains such a classic. Originally dropped back in 1972, Macale's debut effortlessly blends Brazilian folk, samba, and experimental rock while showcasing his uniquely eclectic musical vision. The album's raw energy and poetic lyricism reflect the tumultuous political climate of its time and as well as resonating with audiences then it will do so again now. Macale's soulful vocals and innovative guitar work shine throughout, while the arrangements are both intimate and expansive and each track captivates with its depth and emotion.

Review: The Black Hawk Vol. 1 by Shelly Manne & His Men is a classic hard bop album that captures the energy and excitement of a live performance. Originally released in 1960 and now in 2024 with stunning sound quality. The album features a dynamic band led by the legendary drummer Shelly Manne, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. The group also includes tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca, trumpeter Joe Gordon, pianist Victor Feldman, and bassist Monty Budwig. The album opens with a laid-back rendition of "Summertime," which sets the stage for the more up-tempo bop tunes that follow. The band swings with effortless precision, and the solos are all top-notch. At The Black Hawk Vol. 1" is a must-listen for any fan of hard bop or jazz in general.

Review: New Hard, led by Toshiyuki Miyama, is one of Japan's leading big bands. Since the release of their seminal work Perspective in 1969, they've opened up new horizons in big band jazz with their cutting-edge sound. This work, Niou to Hato, is one such representative work of the new hard movement, which reached its zenith in 1972. Bandleader Kozaburo Yamaki was then in charge of the entire composition and arrangement, and deeply pursued one of his long-standing themes: Japan, the nation in and of itself. Thus we hear Japanese motifs, traditions, and scenes expressed via elaborate, multi-layered arrangements and performances; profound and dynamic melodies with a distinctly Japanese atmosphere are heard throughout and all are undeniably describable as mysterious. Starting with 'Seijinshiki', led by a strong groove, the album comes hem-lined with songs of deep flavor and great excitement. This is the true essence of new hard and its climax.

Review: Idris Muhammad, a prominent American jazz drummer and bandleader, has left an indelible mark on contemporary music as one of its most sampled drummers. His 1976 album House Of The Rising Sun likely fuelled this reputation, thanks to Muhammad's impeccable rhythmic precision. Renowned for his tight, rubbery style, Muhammad's mastery shines through in the six long jazz-funk tracks on the LP. Each piece showcases his unwavering commitment to the craft, delivered with ultra-crisp quality. Despite his acclaim, it's doubtful Muhammad ever faced flying cymbals during his illustrious career, a testament to his undeniable skill and professionalism.

This newest album from him finds him join with an expanded Unity Ensemble to cook up six original compositions featuring the likes of cult UK tenor saxophonist Alan Skidmore and guest percussionist Mark Wastell. They all came together initially at a John Coltrane tribute concert at London's Cafe Oto last year and soon found they had a common creative group so decided to get in the studio together. That early synergy shines through here on a lush five track record that is expansive and uplifting and rich in celestial melody.

Beyond The Redemption (4:53)
Review: You can always count on Nautilus to deliver the most sophisticated covers of soul and jazz standards. The Japanese jazz funk outfit have a pristine approach to their craft, but they also know how to edge their own personality into the versions they lay down. So it goes as they approach the monumental 'Move On Up' by Curtis Mayfield, which is no small task. The actual cut on this 7" is the DJ JIN re-edit, which makes the track fit comfortably on a 45 but also makes sure it works for the DJs out there. On the flip 'Beyond The Redemption' has a more uptempo feel thanks to the sharp angles of the drums and the ascendant keys gliding over the dynamic low end.

Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. This incredible piece takes a Japanese melody and transforms it into a cool jazz style, making use of a special arrangement on the koto. The collection also features exciting tracks like 'Just One Or Eight' and the dynamic 'Cherokee, which proffers an amazing solo. Contributions from experts like Hidehiko Matsumoto and Yuzuru Sera add to its greatness; even after 60 years, the music still feels fresh and passionate. Now reissued in monaural for the first time, this work stands as a timeless masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

With nearly 30 years of release music together, they have built Skeewiff to a household name within the breakbeat community. Something Like That? is their first full album in over five years and it shows that they are still a force to reckon with. Like the cover graphic style could indicate, this is music mostly from popular 60s songs that the Skeewiff have doctored up and refreshed. Ones like 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' by Nancy Sinatra, Austin Powers theme song 'Soul Bossanova' or the crazy jungle mix-up of 'Yakety Sax' most known from the Benny Hill show. Review: Leeds post-punk mystics The Sorcerers deliver their latest album-length aporia, I Too Am A Stranger. With the compositional vision and timeless lines of bassist Neil Innes, truly rare grooves from drummer Joost Hendrickx (Gott Street Park, Eddie Chacon) and a little cosmos of tones and melodies from reed, flute, vibraphone and keyboard player Richard Ormrod - with the up-and-coming Leeds trumpeter Olivia Cuthill chosen to augment the brass sections and regular collaborator Danny Templeman filling out the percussion palette - the overall five-piece lay down nine instrumental funk eccentrics, drawing on everything from classic Ethiopiques, to the chanbara soundtracks of Fumio Hayasaka, to the oddball genius of Moondog. An implicit dedication to cosmopolitanism in album form.
