Something Freaky
Something Freaky (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MAD 001. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Bman & Default - "Something Freaky" (6:34)
  2. Default - "System" (5:38)
Review: Those who closely follow the revivalist jungle scene should be well aware of Bman and Default, as both have been serving up Amen-delivered slabs of dancefloor delirium for well over a decade. Here they inaugurate a brand-new label, Mad, via a weighty, excitable two-tracker. The real winner - for old school junglists at least - is collaborative A-side 'Something Freaky', a sub-heavy trip that adds occasional jazzy synth-flourishes and glassy-eyed melodies to an otherwise roughneck ragga-jungle workout. Default goes dolo on the flip, delivering the kind of deep, woozy and spacey early drum & bass roller that was once the preserve of LTJ Bukem and his Good Looking label.

Energy (180 gram gold marbled vinyl 12")
Cat: DMND 037. Rel: 27 Nov 20
  1. Bredren & Swift - "Energy" (4:59)
  2. Bredren - "Mechanica" (Arkaik remix) (4:10)
Review: Longtime sparring partners Austrian trio Bredren and Dutch MC Swift go way back on Demand, first appearing together on the label in 2014 via the 'Control' EP. Now back and sounding sterner and more tense than ever, 'Energy' hits with more hip-hop heaviness than it does halftime hurtery thanks to Swift's fluid flows and some machine like beat work from Bredren. Flip for a remix treat as Arkiak goes back to that original 2014 release and reboots 'Mechanica', twisting it into a slithering snake-like techy roller. You can feel the energy from here.

  1. Flight Six Six Six (4:55)
  2. Vegan Library (5:33)
  3. Deep Into The Jungle (6:30)
  4. Only When I'm Dreaming (3:14)
Review: Dutch artist Coco Bryce blew away all the competition with this EP on the always worthy Lobster Theremin earlier in the year, as this repress reminds us. The Breda man dug deep into the history of jungle and breakbeat and came out with his own slick re-interpretations. There is the urgent flurry of 'Flight Six Six Six' with its celebratory chords and ducking and diving bass notes then the unrivalled kinetics of 'Vegan Library.' Standout tune 'Deep Into The Jungle' is a soulful roller from the future and then 'Only When I'm Dreaming' casts off into a more suspensory place with lush pads and skeletal beats. A sensational EP.

Review: It's been two years since Christoph de Babalon's last album and in that time his star has only continued to rise. This follow up finds the revered artist digging deep into his old DAT archives to unearth some gems that are so good you will be glad he did. The record kicks off in brutal fashion with crashing breaks and drilling bass before 'Delinquent Dreams' is a relentless flurry of drums with synths that will keep you on edge. Elsewhere the likes of 'Recurring Horrors' make for dense walls of fuzzy noise that totally disorientate you and 'No Man's Land' keeps on with that nightmarish theme. No matter the age of these tracks, they still sound superbly fresh.

Retox LP Sampler (clear vinyl 10")
Cat: 117LP 004S. Rel: 20 Nov 20
  1. Active (6:50)
  2. Shack (6:05)
Review: Amazingly, despite founding 117 Records in 2013, DJ Trace only now puts out a first solo record on the label. On it, he gets deep into a rolling techstep sound that harks back to a 90s rave but with very modern production. The beats hit hard, the synths drill deep, and the energy is kinetic. These darkened tunes reflect the dystopian and uncertain world in which we live, but at the same time offer a great place of solace from it all. This sampler actually comes ahead of a six track 2x12" gatefold that will be presented on clear vinyl, and is a great taster.

  1. Hold Tight (5:39)
  2. 91 (6:16)
  3. Come Back (6:04)
  4. Who's Petruccio? (6:05)
Review: DJH has been responsible for one of Vinyl Fanatiks' most amazing reissues; his 1993-released 'Bass Drop' EP was fetching crazy prices among collectors with hyper-rare decent condition versions going for upwards of L700. Now with the reissue out of the way (and the music affordably back in the people's hands) H has returned to the studio for the first time in decades with the fittingly-titled 'Unfinished Biznizz' EP. Each cut smacking with that early 90s innocence, euphoria and unrestrained energy; 'Hold Tight' warms us up with a classic vocal sample, '91' bubbles and bumps with a Subliminal Cuts style breeze to it while 'Come Back' is your quintessential white glove waggler with some savage Amens thrown in for good measure. Comes complete with modernized breakbeat take on his cult 93 hit 'Petruccio'. Oh brother!

  3. It's Like (4:59)
  4. Final Sound (bonus Beat) (4:28)
Review: The roustabout previously known as dRamatic returns to Kemet with four more authentic jungle bruisers. 'Vanity' sets skank phasers to stun with its sweet and sour chops between sunny-side reggae samples and rambunctious breakbeats. 'Hey Boy' follows suit but with a big diva vocal adding the smooth polish to the roughhouse breaks. Flip for more ruffage as 'It's Like' brings on the big soul swoons over more finely diced and spliced breaks and 'Final Sound' shuts us down with a bubbling, beat-focused groove that wouldn't go amiss in Breakage's current armoury. Savage.

Review: Cuppa load of this! Fresh from delivering Phuture T's bold and bombastic debut album Persuasive Funk, long-standing jungle innovators Inperspective serve up another tasty, jazzy, break-splattered brew with Earl Grey. A close and consistent cousin of the label, notably releasing his debut album Headwinds on Inperspective in 2017, he returns with six servings of loose limbed, airy, jazz jungle. From the lively snare chatter and wheezing, far-away horns of 'Lessons Learnt' to the hazier rave reverie of 'After They Turn The Rigs Off' by way of the desert island solitude and distant breeze of 'French Exit', once again Earl Grey reminds us why less is always more. Don't leave without saying goodbye.

  3. Timberline (6:04)
Review: FD keeps on serving up those super sweet heavy rollers with a new missive for CIA. The producer is already well loved by the label and for good reason: he's a master of his craft, here stepping through the gears after opening up with the rinsing brass and free falling abs of 'First Sound', which is simple but hugely effective. 'True North' (with Total Science) keeps on that same tip - economical but efficient sounds that encourage you to jump up. Lastly, 'Timberline' is a red hot, techno tinged tool with darker intent, but just as good an effect on all who hear it.

Review: Since midway through 2019, High Contrast has been teasing Notes From The Underground via a series of singles that teased a new direction, one steeped in misty-eyed '90s rave nostalgia, loved-up samples drawn from classic hardcore and jungle productions, and a giddy sense of colourful escapism. He continues in that vein on Notes From The Underground, a wholehearted tribute to British dance music's past full of crunchy hardcore and jungle breaks, booming basslines, energetic piano stabs and rushing riffs. It's a hugely enjoyable and excitable concoction that combines knowing nods to underground anthems of old with rave's freewheeling sense of adventure and all manner of notable vocal contributions (Kate Tempest, UK Apache, Anita Blay, Andy Sulieman and LOWES all feature). File under "full-throttle fun".

Review: If you don't know who High Contrast is, you shouldn't be reading this. The Welsh drum & bass innovator has been there since forever, and as a result is rightfully one of the most iconic names in the game. A master of melodic, melancholic jungle and hardcore sounds with a harmonic heart, he returns here with a mighty sixth album on his beloved Hospital Records. Notes From The Underground takes all his usual motifs and evolves them subtly with help from gusts such as Kae Tempest, Anita Blay, UK Apache, Ady Suleiman and more.

Review: US indie Elm Imprint levels up with a walloping slab of unity as one of jungle's pioneering forefathers Ray Keith and the US's finest Randall-endorsed roller merchant Jaybee take a side each on this brilliant 12". 'Fight (5 Elements)' is Ray in his London Most Wanted / Chronic suit of armour. Subby, slamming but such a nice loose feel around those breaks. As for Jaybee's 'Kungfucious'? Let's just say we've found the sonic equivalent of an axe kick right here. Absolute slammage from both sides of the pond on both sides of the wax. Fighting talk.

Review: 31 Records, CIA, Subtitles... This is the calibre of label Myth is dealing with here. Now add The North Quarter as the Truth members continues to bulldozer 2020 with his rattling, subby bubblers. Four cuts in total, each one as system-primed and spacious as the next, Myth captures the essence of dnb jungle in all directions; the Headzian paranoid chimes and neck-snap step of 'Horror', the echoes of Soulr on 'One Note Funk', the Digital and Spirit-ready dubby bash-about 'Long Time' and the loose jazzy Reinforced roominess and trippy warps of '3rd Time Lucky'. Longtime loving this.

Review: Joe Moses AKA Need For Mirrors is arguably one of drum & bass's unsung heroes. A promoter, DJ and producer for decades, he's rarely received acclaim despite an impressive back catalogue that includes 12" releases on many of D&B's most renowned imprints. Perhaps that will change thanks to Flames, his sophomore set. Built on the solid foundations of punchy, club-ready rhythms and a mixture of deep sub and warped basses, the album sees his flit between soaring, string-drenched rollers, deeper concoctions, dustier D&B pastures, tech-step inspired pumpers and the kind of dark, forthright fare that always goes down well at dances. The whole thing is well balanced and brilliantly produced, with Moses deftly showcasing the depth, variety and quality of his productions.

Review: Nu:Tone is a drum & bass giant and a longtime mainstay of the legendary Hospital label. He hasn't put out any solo material since his last album way back in 2014, so this new two tracker is a big deal indeed. After all the classics on that record he has a lot to live up to but does so, with both tunes showing this artist's pioneering approach to drum & bass . Opener 'Sweeter' is the heartfelt and super soulful cut we all need right now with London-based singer and songwriter Maiday providing the icing on the cake. Do It Right' is a nostalgic roller with big rave pads, Av it.

Review: One of the original jungle scientists Potential Bad Boy returns to some of his earliest breakbeat blueprints. Originally released on Paul Ibiza's Limited E Edition imprint on an EP called 'Jungle Fever', these are some of the earliest jungle / hardcore hybrids in the history of the genre. The previously unreleased '4 Da Ladies' kicks with a gritty ghetto vibe with shades of ragga and hip-hop, 'Guiding Star' is an older hardcore-style rave-up with the jungle influence coming into the mix on the breakdown while 'Hardcore Youth' sits in the perfect sweet spot between European rave and rolling soundsystem thunder. Potential? Certified bad boy more like.

Review: What happens if you take a big vocal sample and drop it over a rinsing, old school jungle break beat? The first tune here, 'Opus III', that's what. It's a high energy affair that might well raise some eye brows given the vocal, but you can't help but admire it's all out joyousness and air of celebration. Flip it over and you'll find something just as divisive - another clattering jungle tune filled with kinetic kicks and flurries of snare, and once more a well-known vocal from Whamdo Project's 'Kings Of The Castle.'

Review: As if unearthing stacks of old gold from some of UK rave's earliest (and often largely forgotten) producer pioneers wasn't quite enough of an essential public service, Vinyl Fanatiks are now bringing these OGs out of retirement to make brand new material! Following the launch with DJH come four authentic, 91-flavoured rave blazers from X-Plode, a man who had a one-off white label in 1992 which has since passed collectors' hands for L250. Each cut hitting with the same energy and pace as his originals did 28 years ago, but with added 2020 production punch, this could be the reignition of a whole new career chapter for X-Plode.
