  1. Say That You Love Me (Danny Krivit 7" edit - Francois K remix) (5:34)
  2. Say That You Love Me (Danny Krivit 7" edit - AK remix) (5:46)
Review: Japanese singer-songwriter-producer Akemi Kakihara, better known as AK, is a huge star in her native country-where she's released 15 albums, many topping the charts, along with writing & producing for many other artists as well. Her first album featured a collaboration with close friend Brazilian pianist and composer Eumir Deodato-but she's probably most recognized internationally for Her composition "Say That You Love Me," originally a jazzy ballad, was remixed by Francois K and Eric Kupper in 2001 and released on New York label King Street Sounds. The remix soon became a staple at Body & Soul in both New York and Japan, ultimately topping the dance charts around the world and emerging as the top house anthem in Japan over the next decade-as well as becoming King Street Sounds' all time biggest seller. (The song wasn't the only success story to bloom from this project: visiting Body & Soul for the first time in 2001 to meet Francois K and see and hear the crowd's reaction to the remix, when she also met DJ and party co-founder Danny Krivit. A romance between them blossomed, they married in 2008, and continue to reside in NYC.)

With 7" vinyl singles currently enjoying a renaissance, Krivit suggested AK revisit the landmark track to do another re-work of "Say That You Love" for Most Excellent Unlimited, something noticeably different from the original. AK's new version of her signature tune retains her silky vocal refrain that first seduced listeners, but adds a bubbly keyboard melody and a propulsive snare kick that turns it into a dance floor stomper. Krivit then edited down her new production and the Francois K mix for the first time on 7" release; he felt the song's King Street hit remix arrangement was very strong, so he did his best to maintain it's hit arrangement within the restrictions of a 5:30 min format for the flip side of the single. The result is a must-own 7" that sounds both classic and contemporary at the same time.

  1. Beard In Dust - "At The Dawn"
  2. Tales Of Voodoo - "Sharky"
  3. Esen Gunduz - "Deve Gucu"
Review: When it comes to exotic, off-kilter edits, you'll struggle to find a stronger series than Jonny Rock's Disco Hamam. This fifth volume is every bit as essential as its predecessors. Beards In Dust claims the A-side with "At The Dawn", a tidy revision of a druggy and "chuggy" version of a blue-eyed psychedelic funk-rock roller that comes complete with some serious sing-along sections. The heady world of Turkish music - a constant source of inspiration at the Disco Hamam HQ - comes to the fore on the B-side. Tales Of Voodoo's "Sharky" is a deliciously percussive, dancefloor-friendly fusion of Middle Eastern exoticism, funk-rock guitars and heavy disco percussion, while Esen Gunduz's "Deve Gucu" is an even sweatier, Italo Disco-era stomper that sounds like something you'd have heard in Istanbul clubs circa 1985.

Review: Low Budget Family is a Moscow-based label related to DS Bar, run by Sergey Pleshakov and Leonid Lipelis. Their next release is by Pasha Mikheev aka Cable Toy: a former game soundtracks/ad music maker who found himself attending parties more frequently in recent years and eventually making dance music himself. "Doktorhaus" is his debut release and features the raw/jacking early Chicago vibe of the title track (feat SBP4) on the A side, while on the flip label co-head Lipelis teams up with Mikheev on two neon-lit and evocative versions of "Boden".

  4. Mitrin (Dogu Civcik edit) (4:46)
Review: Disco Halal is back with more Middle Eastern inspired grooves on its third volume, helping us venture deeper into the exotic. As yet the originals are unknown to most, probably some best kept secrets. First up is self-proclaimed 'mechanical Turk' from Switzerland Mehmet Aslan, a key figure in the Turkish revival scene with his edit of "Baladi" full of tulums and baglamas, it's just gorgeous. Autarkic's edit of "Zaffa" is definitely your more traditional vocal led Turkish ballad but with a sinister synth bassline lurking beneath and giving the track a whole new interpretation. On the flip There's an edit of "Joe's A Star", whoever that's by! Featuring more wonderful baglama, you can just imagine being at a cafe in Istanbul, enjoying the good life of gullac and shisha. Speaking of which; their man in Istanbul Dogu Civicik, he of FOC Edits gives the lovely acoustic ditty "Mitrin" a nice rework. The perfect track to accompany a Sunday walk through Emirgan Park.

Review: Released deep in the throes of her tenure as Nigerian pop's 'First Lady Of Song', "Give Me A Chance" is the fifth album and the first reissue since its 1980 by the late great Christy Essien captures just why she became such a universally loved artist; Essien can tap any type of groove and make it her own. From the country blues of "Give Me A Chance" to the warm reggae bubbles of "Ife" via the afrodisco of "Rumours" and all fusions in between, the combination Christy's powerful presence and super tight band made this one of her best albums.

  1. Time Million (Pepe Hardclipping remix) (10:40)
  2. Time Million (Villalobos remix) (13:59)
Review: Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted a number of other 12" singles bearing remixes of this track. According to Gerd Janson, it's because he got a bit overexcited when commissioning club-friendly revisions of the cut, an "outsider pop" gem that will be featured on Feater's forthcoming album "Socialo Blanco". It would be fair to say that the mixes featured here are suitably big. Pepe Bradock handles the A-side, wrapping dubbed-out synth stabs, watery melodies and fireside-hot bass around a skittish, techno-tempo rhythm track. It's one of the French producer's most accessible and peak-time ready revisions for some time. On the reverse, Ricardo Villalobos offers up a suitably percussive, off-kilter minimal techno take that makes great use of short vocal and guitar sounds lifted from Feater's Balearic-minded original mix.

  2. Incantations (instrumental)
Review: G.A.N.G. was a short-lived studio project from Giorgio Giordano, Giorgio Dolce and Roberto Zanetti (Savage). In 1983 they released "Incantations", a plush cosmic disco burner that rides a slow tempo but hits heavy with its rich layers of synth and slick guitar licks. Best are giving it a fresh airing with this on-point reissue, bringing the chugging bass arps back into the fold of a sympathetic scene that celebrates just this kind of evocative, sensual slow-mo party fodder. The original mix elevates in the second half with a soaring vocal from Stefania Dal Pino, but if that doesn't appeal there's a purely instrumental take on the B side that focuses purely on the groove.

  4. Get Down (7:14)
Review: Mexican DJ and producer Hotmood has slung out a huge amount of quality releases in the past few years via his own Hotmood Records as well as elsewhere, from Disco Fruit to Whiskey Pickle. Now Guillermo Gonzalez is bringing the funk to Ravanelli Disco Club, imparting some seriously classy club rollers that draw on classic sound sources but boil the ingredients down into punchy, effective contemporary dancefloor bombs. "Burning Desire" is a sprightly, key led affair, while "Maybe The Melody Sucks" gets busy with Philly strings and brass stabs. "So Deep" piles the looped up disco funk on heavy, and "Get Down" does some impressive filter riding - these disco house bombs can't fail to set the party on fire when they're slapped on the platter.

  1. Pick Me Up (Say Goodbye)
Review: It's been a hot minute since Al Kent dropped some of his sweet and soulful dancefloor instinct on us, but he's back in style on his reanimated Million Dollar Disco label. "Pick Me Up (Say Goodbye)" takes Gladys Knight & The Pips' tender "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Say Goodbye)" and gives it a supremely pitched dancefloor injection. Upping the tempo and rolling out an organic disco beat, Knight's vocal gets a whole new backdrop without losing the emotional heft of the track. A truly heart-melting cut for that sentimental, cut loose, late end of the party.

  1. I'm Dreaming (original vocal version)
  2. I'm Dreaming (instrumental version)
Review: South African musician John Kongos has an illustrious career that has tripped through chart topping material and soundtracks alike. In 1981 he released "I'm Dreaming" as a limited 7", and now Best have dug out this curious gem and given it a proper 12" reissue treatment. The track is a real head turner, leaping from expressive string chops to Italo thrum to create a dynamic, distinctive disco burner that will have switched on heads clamouring for an ID. The vocal version is on point, but the track has enough riches in its composition to make the instrumental take on the flip just as powerful for your record bag.

Review: The Belgian crate diggers behind the STROOM label have dug up more overlooked gold here, bringing together two disparate but equally impressive tracks. On the A-side you'll find Kyoto's 1984 single "Venetian Blinds", a curious but hugely enjoyable chunk of bustling, off-kilter synth-pop rich in crunchy machine drums, undulating bass, Prince style guitars and stylish female vocals. Over on the flip it's all about Zoe Sinatra's 1990 B-side "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes". This semi slow-motion affair wraps half-whispered, half-sung bi-lingual vocals and alien synthesizer melodies around a rubbery but chugging electronic groove.

Review: Thomas Leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on Cherry Red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this Emotional Rescue reissue 12". Opener "Saving Grace" is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while "Tight As A Drum" heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft FX to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for Leer's poetic chat over the top. Bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed Bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. Honing in on the weirder qualities of Leer's work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!

Review: "Mothership Connection (Star Child)" by funk legends Parliament was the third and last single released from the group's highly acclaimed 1975 album of the same name. After six years and much fanfare (including some from George Clinton himself), this sought-after KON remix is finally on 7" with a new EQ on the A side and a handy instrumental dub on the flip titled "Mothership Konnection" (see what he did there?). According to the man himself, "another sure shot rework from the stems ... recognizing the pure genius of George Clinton and crew, P-FUNK. So many layers in this session, it's amazing how much is really going on musically".

  1. You Do You (feat Howard Johnson) (3:43)
  2. Life To Me (3:50)
Review: Trailer Limon and E Da Boss (he of Myron & E fame) have been recording as The Pendletons for the best part of a decade, serving up occasional slices of revivalist electrofunk and turn-of-the-'80s soul. They're at it again here, popping up on Bastard Jazz with a double dose of goodness made with the assistance of some of the Bay Area's finest musicians. The headline attraction is undoubtedly the Howard Johnson hook-up "You Do You", a rich and evocative chunk of mid-tempo disco-soul blessed with mix-friendly drum breaks, seductive instrumentation (think glistening funk guitars, toasty bass, punchy horns and fluid pianos) and a slick, smooth lead vocal. "Life To Me", a more sugary affair built around distinctive slap bass, sustained chords, relaxed drums and subtle synth flourishes, is similarly impressive.

Review: It was Memorial Day Weekend 2016, and the sun shined bright over the Detroit River. Pontchartrain stepped up to the decks at the Red Bull stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival donning his infamous "Detroit vs. Itself" t-shirt. His first song through the Rane rotary mixer was a dubplate made specifically for his set: "Afterlife". It's a brilliantly executed balearic daytime disco rework that warrants the praise of summer anthem that it's earning. On the flip is "Pool", an equally sunny slomo beatdown rework from Blair French. It's a delightful blend of cerebral and soulful, and is finally getting a release after being originally championed by Peter Croce on his Le Mellotron Paris set back in early 2018.

Review: Is It Balearic? sister label Magic Wand can do no wrong with its long-standing series of cult re-edits. The "Special Editions" branch makes its first move of the year with this smokin' hot clutch of nudged up heaters edited by Rune Lindbaek, leading in with a steamy, dreamy version of Lowrell Simons' "Love Message". Lindbaek also tackles "Hologramas" by Frederico Estevez, simmering the track down to a purposeful, immersive drum roll embellished with nothing but some fluttering flute. His take on Craig Peyton's "Be Thankful For What You Got" is all thrumming arps underpinning a cool and deadly synth pop take on the classic soul jam. The final edit sees Lindbaek riding roughshod on Angel Tears' "Ishka", creating a high drama groover shot through with Eastern mysticism.

Now the label widens the net with a various artists 12" that features four disco-not-disco burners for adventurous party people to shake down to like they're in 1980s New York. The Showfa leads the way with "Joy", a bouncy, peak-time ready re-edit of a lesser-known gospel disco gem, while label boss Yam Who? once again showcases his impeccable musicianship and production skills on the breezy gospel disco stomp of "Tomorrow". Stephen King's "It's So Easy" is a subtly tooled-up take on a Blaxploitation era disco-funk workout, while Sweet Julibees' superb "So Strong" is an impeccable chunk of slap-bass sporting gospel boogie.

Review: Moscoman's increasingly influential Disco Halal label have outdone themselves once more on this latest release, an official reissue of the highly sought-after self-titled TCP album. Standing for Tony Carey Project, this 13-track LP originally saw the light of day on the classic X Records back in 1984 and laid down a marker for the sound the former Rainbow keys man would go on to explore as Yellow Power and Planet P. If you are a fan of the DJ mixes of Lena Willikens or Red Axes you really need to invest some time in this TCP album which set the groundwork for the electronic music we know today. Shouts to Disco Halal for getting Tony Carey to supply some killer sleeve notes too! Reissue of the week!

Review: On their third album, Tiger & Woods have decided to flip the script a little, paying tribute to Italy's remote, rural clubs of the early 1980s. To do this, they've sampled up a wealth of material from Rome's boogie-inspired, Italo-disco era Full Time and Goodymusic labels and turned it into slow motion and mid-tempo gold. As a result, the album's eight tracks are altogether more sun-kissed and Balearic in feel than their electrofunk-inspired club jams of old, though this is no bad thing. In fact, there's an argument to suggest that "AOD" (it stands for Adult Oriented Dance apparently) is their most enjoyable and listenable album to date, with less reliance on heavyweight loop jams and more intricate musical touches. However you spin it, "AOD" is a glassy-eyed, loved up triumph.
