Review: Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Joe Goddard, two luminaries of electronic music, have united to create Neptunes, a celestial collaboration that defies genre boundaries. This EP is a sonic journey through a vast, ethereal soundscape, where intricate synth work, pulsating rhythms, and haunting melodies converge to create a truly immersive experience. The title track, 'Neptunes', is a mesmerizing exploration of the namesake planet. Smith's modular wizardry conjures up a cosmic soundscape, while Goddard's rhythmic prowess provides a driving force. The result is a track that is both hypnotic and invigorating. Throughout the EP, Smith and Goddard showcase their individual talents while seamlessly blending them into a cohesive whole. Smith's ability to extract haunting melodies from her modular synthesisers is matched only by Goddard's knack for crafting infectious grooves. Together, they create a sonic tapestry that is as beautiful as it is complex. A testament to the power of collaboration and a record that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers of depth and complexity with each play.

Under Me Sleng Teng (version) (4:53)
Review: Wayne Smith's 'Under Mi Sleng Teng', released in 1985, is a milestone in Jamaican music history and one that helped launch a new genre and transform island culture overnight. Its innovative digital bass line not only impacted Jamaica but also bridged reggae with US hip-hop production values, which went on to influence global music. Over 200 versions of the riddim have been released, and artists like 50 Cent and The Prodigy have incorporated it into their work. Originally issued as a seven-inch single on the Jamaican Jammys label, Smith, who passed away in over a decade ago at age just 48, left behind a legacy rooted in Waterhouse, a troubled Kingston neighbourhood.

Review: Smooth & Simmonds was Chris Simmonds and Ron Wells, a pair pf producers who were active from the early to mid-90s and made just a handful of EPs that have all stood the test of time. Three of the best of them have been newly remeasured by a long-time fan at the Pariter label and are now getting served up on fresh wax. This 12" features 90s EP, The Four Seasons, with two mixes of the title cut. The first is a steamy Warehouse Mix with dusty drums, subtle rave whistles and seductive vocals stitched in, while the second is a Factory Mix that rides a little more smoothly on uplifting chord work and brighter synth energy.

Elza Soares - "Mas Que Nada" (2:25)
Elizabeth - "Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente" (2:39)
Review: The 12th release on Mr. Bongo's signature 45s series saw a reissue of two foundational releases in Brazil's modern popular music category; now the record hears a second round, fresh again off the master metal lacquer. On the A, we hear Brazilian samba luminary Elza Soares covering Jorge Ben's classic 'Mas Que Nada' - albeit with a hoarser vocal tone, such was Soares' signature voice, one which only led to a whopping 34-album career. B-sider Elizabeth, by contrast, upholds a mystery; the artist was nicknamed "Gatinha do Mato" ("jungle cat"), and recorded 'Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente' at some indeterminate point in 1960s Sao Paolo, when and where Brazilian local styles blended with funk and rock.

Review: After dropping this along with another cut (a Disco Dust mix of 'Knowledge & Love') on its new sub-label, Disco Edits, Sonic Wax is now pressing it up to a one-sided 7" on the main label. And it deserves the attention cause it is a killer disco cut with plenty of dance floor clout. The tune features the dynamic collaboration of Matt Early and Lee Jefferies who remix 'Rocking Me In Your Arms' into a seductive groove with a tight, funky bassline and a catchy sing-along chorus full of original disco heat. One for the peak time, for sure.

Review: Whereas most drum & bass, electro and other adjunct styles tend to adopt an implicit pro-futurist message, Soul Intent bucks the trend with 'Fight The Future' and three further tracks, portending a potential paleo-traditionalist revolution in drum & bass. Sadly, it doesn't sound like the future has been very well fought against: this is tearout neuro techstep of the most rabid kind, and it really does sound like the battle has been won and that the AI decepticons have taken over, with robo-biotic growl design and mechanical-maniacal metal clanking away on the title track and 'Right There' most prominently. Still, it's a wicked EP, even if you don't take its titular antifuturist battle cry at its word. 'Feeling Uneasy' is especially wild, moving into an outer-d&b territory that sounds like it's been occupied by an alien drummer militia.

Released in 1993 on an album of the same name, it's a standout example of the lyrical dexterity of A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. Its mellow, soulful production complements the effortlessly smooth flows which are packed with sophisticated wordplay and inventive beats that set it apart from usual West Coast gangsta rap by offering a fresh, alternative sound. Decades later, '93 'Til Infinity' remains a defining piece of hip-hop history. .

Review: Sound Synthesis is back on his own new young label Subversive Underground with more atmospheric techno. This is warm, analogue driven tackle for sophisticated floors with opener 'We Are Still Here' sinking you into a world of celestial pads, aqueous chords and dubby, high speed drums. 'Sonic Transmissions' brings more texture to the fore with an edgy sustained synth line and metallic percussion and 'The Untold Story' then hits hard with stumbling kicks and tense pads keeping you on edge. Last of all, 'Above Below' keeps dancers on their toes with more electrifying synth work unfolding over charged-up techno kicks.

Review: Electro has so much representation already that we'd have hardly imagined it needed a Coalition, but colour us mistaken, of course. Presumably functioning both as intergalactic senate and record label, here, on 'Robot Connection 001', the Electro Coalition commission four delegates to lay down one lengthy sonic deposition each. Sound Synthesis kicks things off with a moving acid purging, with soaring cutoff filters aplenty, setting the diplomatic record straight with a grand metaphysical treatise - 'Physical Terrain' - on the cosmopolitical terrain thus faced. Then Arsonist Recorder objects by way of a pure immaterial antithesis, with 'T & A' locking in heavy freq-layered constrictions between an accursed beat; then Neonicle's 'Combination' and Sinitsin's 'People Are Aliens', finally, form a worthy synthesis and thesis-return respectively, ending on a suspension of humanly intelligible feeling, in favour of a bellicist's power fantasy in harsh snap-breaks and chromatic arp-arcs.

Sweet Emma (4:05)
Review: German sextet "SOUND" recorded a standout set in Frankfurt in 1978, immortalised on the LP "Jazzlife" at Night (Vol.1). Singled out was their composition 'Sound Spirit,' a dancey, post-bop jazz track where Volker Burkhardt's tenorsax soulfully wails in a Coltrane fashion over Werner Bauer' syncopated keys and Heli Kneipp's and Athur Greaves' driving percussion and drumming, intertwined with Jann Meyer's funky bass. All culminate in this super groovy contrapuntal track that often takes you nicely by surprise. Now this seminal piece arrives in a limited edition 7" of 300 on Tramp Records, the small but significant home of some of Germany's best reissued funk, soul and jazz on vinyl. Nat Adderly's 'Sweet Emma' was one of "SOUND's" other distinctive tracks that night, and it too resurfaces on the B side. This upbeat version may teeter on a 'trad' jazz precipice, but as the saxophone takes the cornet parts of the original, its tonality draws the listener in. These tracks already command attention from the discerning contemporary jazz community, and now again available is a must for those who like both upbeat or downtempo late 70s jazz.

Minsk collective Soyuz have some seriously strong musical chops and subsequently can bring in guest appearances from the sensational Biel Basile of the rising Brazilian group Sessa and Anthony Ferraro (Toro Y Moi, Astronauts, Etc.). They fit into the mixes beautifully, sounding like they've been part of the group their whole lives. It's a real gem of a release and a likely future collectible 7" from the Brighton-based independent label Mr Bongo.

Yacu (6:38)
Sun Bleed (7:02)
Review: Hamburg's relatively new Space Drum Mediatation label's sixth release continues its tradition of deep, immersive soundscapes, blending ambient and drone elements with a wide-ranging sonic depth. This latest offering unfolds like a journey through ancient and futuristic landscapes, each track carrying its own distinct energy and atmosphere. Side-A opens with 'Yarra', a hypnotic piece driven by tribal drums and chant-like motifs, evoking a primal, meditative state. 'Water Sirens' follows, weaving hedonistic, jungle-infused textures that feel both untamed and ritualistic, transporting the listener into a lush, mysterious realm. On Side-B, the tempo shifts with 'Yacu', a pulsating, Goa-trance-inspired track that surges with momentum, its fast-paced rhythms pulling towards a euphoric edge. The release closes with 'Sun Bleed', a deeply spiritual, spacey composition laced with acid-tinged echoes and an expansive mysticism. Its reverberations stretch into the unknown, leaving an afterglow of cosmic introspection. Balancing organic and electronic elements, this release stands as another example to the label's dedication to quality and sonic exploration. It's a seamless fusion of tribal resonance, trance propulsion and ambient depthiperfect for deep listeners and adventurous sonic explorers alike.

Originally sung by Ruby Andrews in 1967 and penned by Jo Armstead, the trio's version channels a retro, jazzy vibe that could easily pass for a lost Blue Note gem from the '60s. Review: Before NWA, Wu-Tang, A Tribe Called Quest or Run DMC, there was James Bromley Spicer. Active during the late 1970s and early 80s, Spicer's best known hit was 'Money (Dollar Bill Y'all)', which fewer heads know is the referent source of Wu-Tang's latter-day touchstone record 'C.A.S.H.'. Both songs deal with the embittered centrality of money in the waking daily lives of just about everybody, sympathising with the grim reality of the situation whilst also insisting we get with it. Yet Spicer's original lacked the distinctively streetwise tang of 'Tang's later interpretation of the theme, going with a rather excitable and impish mood, which went with the melting-pot territory of hip-hop in the 80s. Spicer's flows are gnarly and rabid rather than affected and cool, revealing the roots of moneybagging hip-hop as fanatically on-beat. "It takes money to pay rent to eat, without which you're hungry and on the street..."

It is a hard and dark affair with some slick psy-trance elements starting with 'Thunderworld,' featuring a stomping kick, rolling groove, and thunderstorm-like lead, all enhanced by cinematic sound design and a breakbeat section. 'Ghostrider' is driven by metallic percussion with a rising dark bassline adding suspense. 'Warp Drive' delivers a trance-y bassline and distorted synths that evoke a neon-lit, futuristic atmosphere and the EP closes with 'Croton' that brings a distorted bassline, saturated percussion, dark leads and atmospheric pads for an intense finish.

The band's latest offering, their first new material in over a year, hints at exciting new directions for the UK soul stalwarts. This double A-side single whets appetites for their 11th studio album, due in 2025. Stone Foundation's signature sound evolves here, incorporating fresh influences while maintaining their soulful core. 'Fix You Up' rides a propulsive groove, its urgent rhythm section driving forward as layers of brass and keys build to euphoric heights. Jones' impassioned vocals soar over the mix, his lyrics touching on themes of resilience and redemption. The addition of Mick Talbot's distinctive keyboard work adds a new dimension, his deft touches elevating both tracks. 'Everything and All I Want' takes a more introspective turn, its shimmering arrangement recalling classic 70s soul ballads while feeling thoroughly modern. As the set progresses, the new material sits comfortably alongside fan favourites, demonstrating Stone Foundation's knack for crafting timeless soul music. The limited pressing of 500 copies ensures this release will quickly become a coveted item for collectors. It's a fitting testament to a band continuing to evolve and excite after over a decade in the game, bridging their past work with whatever they're cooking up next.

Espresso Con Panna (4:11)

Review: Galaxy Sound Company has become one of those cop-on-sight labels thanks to is cultured 45rpm edit series. This time, label staple, bedroom B-boy beatmaker and Michigan native Strictlybutters drops a sweet duo of beatstrumentals that skate, stomp and groove with great style. Side A's 'Espresso Con Panna' flips Salt of the Earth's 1984 gospel-funk banger 'Love Light II' into a bass-thumping, sax-smooth hip-hop gem that will enliven any party. The second offer is just as sweet: 'Pain Au Chocolat' is a Detroit-inspired and buttery groove dripping in jazzy Axelrod-esque flair. Pure head-nod gold.

Stuck In The Swamp (Warzou remix)
Review: STS is the alias of a new Detroit-based producer who makes their debut here and explores high-speed techno. 'Souvlaki Man' is a real whirlwind with synths shimming about the mix, rising and falling while the drums march on. It's a psychedelic sound perfect for strobe-lit floors. Danny Daze and Jonny from Space remix with more dark energy and automated sound designs and 'Stuck In The Swamp' slows things down with wires, twisted synths and warped lines over a broken, electro-fried beat. 'Swallowed By A Whale' is another hard-to-define sound that is rich in otherworldly sound design and innovative rhythm. Warzou then transforms it into a sludgy, low-end workout. A strong debut.

Review: Studio 1's 'Schwarz' EP, brought to life by minimalist maestro Wolfgang Voigt, embodies the essence of 90s minimal techno. Originally crafted in 1997 but released only in 2019, it features three entrancing cuts: 'Schwarz 1,' 'Schwarz 2,' and 'Schwarz 3.' The Studio 1 series, starting in 1995, made waves for its unique formula of monochromatic sleeves and no-nonsense, untitled tracks. This aesthetic not only refined the genre's visual identity but also its sonic minimalism. 'Schwarz' remains a masterclass in stripped-down techno.
