Banoffee Pies Beats 02.2
Cat: BPBL 022. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Jay Anderson - "Didn't Care Too Much" (6:20)
  2. S II P - "Untitled" (7:50)
  3. Peshka - "Basic Instinct" (10:55)
Review: Bristol house imprint Banoffee Pies return with more subtle and hypnotic grooves. On the A side is the mysterious Jay Anderson with "Didn't Care Too Much". While not much is known of him yet, we are sure that will change once people listen to this track: deep minimal house that crosses over into electro much in the vein of Frenchman TC80 or what his peers on Japan's Cabaret imprint are doing right now. Next up, Greek up and comer Simonas Paplauskas serves up the rolling and entrancing afterhours cut "Untitled" which takes its cues from the current sounds of Romania: an immaculate production. On the flip, the entire side is handed over to Ukrainian producer Peshka, who delivers another jagged yet downright wacky and unique take on reduced grooves with "Basic Instinct".

  4. Stojche - "The Exchange" (Gian Hydrocity Refix) (5:40)
Review: Blackhall & Bookless have been pursuing a fantastic strain of house and techno via their Jaunt label for many moons now. They're back and celebrating 10 years with a series of fantastic remixes that highlight the scope of their artistic vision, and that of those close to them. Inland leads in with an oceans deep version of the label bosses' "Spirit", which is smartly followed up by Jonas Kopp's equally submersive take on Hiver's "Itria". Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff lets the swooning "Meandering Rivers" by Kaelan burst its banks and fill out an expansive landscape, while Stojche pings Gian's "The Exchange" out into an electro-speckled cosmos.

Review: Seminal New York City imprint Serotonin lives on. John Selway and Jason Szostek present It's What We Live For: Volume 2 - the second in a series of compilations sharing their vision of sounds of tomorrow. Szostek himself dons the well known BPMF alias again for some fierce breakbeat techno action on "Zu Heib Fur Uns", the equally legendary Healy brothers aka Somatic Response still going strong - as heard on the slo-mo acid trance journey "Strategy Of Desire" and relative newcomer Heidi Sabertooth of Opal Onyx delivers some sludgy electro-punk antics on "So You Want To Take Back Your Will". There's some handy locked grooves on the electro-bass tip featured too by Synapse and Pointsman, which were pretty wicked too.

Review: Back in May, the first multi-artist missive from the freshly launched Hearse label sold out in no time at all. We have a feeling that this similarly formatted follow-up will go the same way. '90s survivor Cosmic Force kicks things off in style via the raw, angular riffs, spacey melodies, vocoder vocals and punchy electro rhythms of "Suckers Divide", before Manasyt takes us into industrial electro territory on the fuzzy and breathless "Sister Ping". Over on side B, Secret State ups the tempo on the undeniably Drexciyan "Dominant Narrative", while Brassica peppers a high-octane rhythm track with dystopian noises and malfunctioning computer electronics on killer closing cut "0898666420".

Review: Melbourne-based imprint LKR Records, formerly known as Lou Karsh Rhythms, return with an impressive various artist compilation here. "Exertion VA II" reaches far and wide to compile the forward thinking sounds of six great local producers, touching on the experimental but functional pocket of electro: as heard on fierce bass-driven sci-fi jams like Hymns' "Out Of The Head Into The Body", A-Sim's "Express Yourself", to rolling breakbeat action courtesy of Sputnik One ("Isolator"), junglist riddims (ANSV's "Rainstorm") and even some experimental fare by Fingers Of God and Percy Silicon.

Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Review: Following up some great releases by the likes of Greek analogue punk Morah, Gavin Pykerman aka Koova and French veteran Automat - London's Brokntoys are back with a wicked double header. On the A side of this Split EP we have Identified Patient (Pinkman/Common Thread) who serves up the guttural slo-mo techno of "Weerlos" and the electro-noir body music of "Stretch Out For Nothing". On the flip, the EBM/industrial vibe continues with Nurse boss Ali Najafi aka Scarlit Port - who delivers the slow burning sleaze of "Marg" (reminiscent of Front 242 circa Geography) and the factory floor groove of "Touch U Without Touchin Ur Skin" powered by appropriate metallic clangs, acidic arpeggios and brooding strings.

Aborting Your Dreams

Review: The latest instalment in Pinkman's white label Broken Dreams series is a collaborative affair with imprint affiliate Identified Patient joining forces with vocalist Sophie Du Palais, who has previously contributed to one of the producer's other EPs. Du Palais is in full on mascara-clad minimal wave mode on trippy opener "Peaceful Panic", a throbbing fusion of raw synthesizer riffs, mind-altering arpeggio lines and crunchy drum machine hits. Her stylish spoken word vocals come to the fore on dark and psychedelic electro number "Sleep Without Rest", before Lasznikoff joins in the fun on closer "Everything is Done", a fuzzy and up-tempo workout rich in macabre, low-register riffs, incessant percussion hits and trippy, late night aural textures.

  2. Beta Evers - "Don't Believe It" (3:57)
  3. Beta Evers - "Endzeitvision" (3:53)
  4. SSRI - "Storage Capabilities" (7:17)
Review: Berlin's In The Dark Again does not stick to one particular style or genre of music, and this is precisely what we've loved about their output thus far. Artists such as Heinrich Dressel, Ekoplekz, and even In Aeternam Vale have appeared on the label, but number four in the series marks the arrival of a few new names. First up on the A-side is June with "Between 2 Fires", a tune that sends cold waves through metallic electro beats; this is followed by the first cut from Beta Evers, the beautifully wonky techno cut entitled "Don't Believe It". Evers is back on the B1 with "Endzeitvision", an acid-laced stomper complete with mesmerising background cinematics, while SSRI drops a whole load of cerebral sonics on his "Storage Capabilities" tune - odd, broken, and perfectly gloomy.

  1. Marino - "Kyoto Plage" (5:21)
  2. Mirouf - "Joyride" (7:18)
  3. Skrimz - "Pom'Pom" (6:04)
Review: Six Ponts refers to the six bridges that connect the city of Nantes to its isle. A creative and forward-looking district where 44 Tours is located. The label presents its inaugural release with a gathering of local talents, who are all said to have met and become friends at the record shop - a place where they conversed about the wax imports at the shop, over beers on breezy afternoons. On the A side we have Marino with the breakneck and hyperaware electro groove of "Kyoto Plage" which despite its ferocious tempo is just sublime and evocative. On the flip, Mirouf goes for something more of an organic feeling on the breaks driven, almost drum & bass "Joyride", while Skrimz's "Pom'Pom" hears the drummer get wicked, until a futuristic bass and bleeps kick in.

Review: Two and a half years have passed since the tragic passing of Maltese electro producer Rhys Celeste AKA Microlith. He's missed badly by those who knew him, particularly fellow Maltese artist - and regular studio buddy - Keith Farrugia AKA Sound Synthesis. Here Fundamental Records offers up a collection of previously unheard tracks recorded by Farrugia and Celeste during the latter's lifetime, and as you'd expect it's very, very good. All six tracks are top notch, but our picks are melancholic, acid-flecked deep electro opener "Ecosphere", the ultra-melodic, Boards of Canada-influenced "Flying Cosmonauts", enveloping ambient-electro number "10,500 Miles" and richly emotive closing cut "Safe Travels".

Cat: APRON 17. Rel: 11 Aug 20
  1. Mighty Baron III - "Screwe'd" (3:34)
  2. Sun Runners - "The Finest" (4:14)
Review: The latest audio missive from Funkineven's Apron camp has been receiving a lot of heat, and it's easy to see why. In typical style, both tracks take classic boogie and '80s soul jams, impressively mangling them in distinctly different ways. Mighty Baron III's "Screwed" is a "chopped and screwed" masterpiece - a fusion of sludgy, slowed-down electrfunk loops, pitched-down vocals and wonky beatbox rhythms. It's distinctively odd, but really rather special. Flip for the Sun Runners' "The Finest", a smart and melodious S.O.S Band re-edit that's been pepped up with additional drum machine hits and special effects. It will do the business on both boogie and R&B dancefloors.

Review: The XCPT Music label continues to establish itself as a go-to outlet for those who like freaky late night sounds. Like previous instalments of the Time Dance series, this various artists affair is a wild collisions of creative styles. There's the restless and kinetic techno malfunctions of "FB2THSN", deep drum patterns of "Amino Acid Side Chains" and footwork made of DJ Plant Texture's "Yeah Boy" on the first side alone. The flip goes hard and dark with the industrial bass of "Konnor 3012", frenzied electro of "Pirate Utopias" and dystopian sound-scaping that is "AVP" .

Review: The latest EP from Parisian electro stable Griffe is an undeniably expansive affair featuring no less than four original tracks by Pascal Ordioni AKA P.O and another from the Solar Sound System outfit of which he is a member. Ordioni's solo tracks are vibrant, pulsating and mostly melodious, with the acid-powered electro/techno fusion of "Mother" and similarly styled "Pressure" vying with stomping, EBM-influenced closer "Slomany" in the "most club-ready" track stakes. Elsewhere, "I Don't Feel Anything" is a bittersweet shuffle though '90s IDM territory, and Solar Sound System's "Reveille Toi" is a throbbing, bleep-laden chunk of intergalactic acid jack.

Review: The Dom Trojga label is a product of the Warsaw scene. It is curated by underground mainstay Eltron and looks to convey some of the energy and sounds you might hear on any given weekend in the city's subterranean basements. This second EP brings together a wealth of new school talents to serve up some fresh takes on techno. There's cosmic synth funk from Poly Chain, sci-fi styled electro deepness from SLG and some harder hitting kicks from Bejenec & Jaxe before label boss Eltron closes things out with an experimental broken beat track to jack to club in the dead of night. Who fancies a trip to Warsaw?

  4. X Ray Pop - "La Machine A Rever" (Red Axes edit) (5:08)
Review: There's much to admire on this latest 12" excursion from hard-working Israeli duo Red Axes. On the A-side you'll find two brand new collaborations, the most notable of which is "NYX Tape" - a clandestine, mind-altering chunk of minimal wave drug-chug featuring the distinctive spoken word vocals of original no wave star Gina X (she of "No GDM" fame). Chloe Raunet AKA C.A.R lends her similarly stylish spoken word vocals to the EP's other original production, the acid-fired electro filthiness that is "5 Min". On the flipside you'll find two tasty re-edits of tracks from the Dark Entries catalogue: a dub-tinged, dancefloor-friendly take on Solid Moon's spacey "Destination Moon" and a rolling, club-ready tweak of X-Ray Pop's quirky electronic bubbler "La Machine a Rever".

Review: Electro might be having a big moment in the spotlight but for Anthony Rother, it has been his way of life for decades. Here he serves up a crisp and kicking single 'Stellarator' that's built on booming analogue drums and has molten, Millsian melodies rippling through its core to mind altering effect. A Plasma mix makes even more of those magically modulated synths. On the flip, Sync 24 gets more aggressive with his frazzled 'Hyperway', which rough rides on slapping hits and alien synth life forms. Also included are a pair of tense, teeth clenching intergalactic electro loops.

Review: Having cut their teeth on crucial releases for Lux Rec, Pinkman, Broken Dreams and more, Savage Grounds come to Mosaique with more of their dark, spiky industrial and minimal wave deviations. The pair are more than qualified, with Daniele Cosmo being the Lux Rec boss and CCO being a veteran of the punky underground techno scene. This latest release matches up to what they've achieved so far, with "Schnell Ausser Kontrolle" especially standing out with its chunky, forward-thrusting synth hooks matching edginess with catchiness in a most artful of ways. There's plenty of lo-fi experimentation going on, not least on the dystopian gurgle of "Parasomnia", to keep all denizens of the night shocking out under the moon.

Review: SC-164 is back on his own label with a third transmission of kinetic and angsty electro. Based out of Brooklyn, Greg Schappert aka Donor under his SC-164 alias is bringing plenty of street level grit and industrial rawness to this project as exemplified by the crashing hits and whirring machines on "003-001". "003-002" is a broken beat frenzy of computer game laser sounds, space travel radio comms and paranoid electro funk. "003-003" is the most compelling of the lot thanks to the corrugated bass that powers along the dystopian electro grooves and last of all is "003-004" with its fat bass and turbulent synths. Madness.

Fish Tubes (Hammer & Mor Elian remixes)
Cat: CAI 004. Rel: 03 Oct 18
  1. Test Tubes (Hammer remix V8) (6:55)
  2. Fishbowl (Mor Elian remix) (5:59)
Review: Some six months after Paul "Scuba" Rose delivered a fine first album from his vowel-free SCB project, Hammer and Mor Elian step up to remix two of that set's most celebrated tracks. Bicep associate Hammer handles "Test Tubes", rolling out a mix bristling with crispy percussion, mind-mangling electronic riffs, foreboding electronic bass and chiming melodies. In contrast, LA producer and Hypercolour regular Mor Elian opts for a more loose-limbed and broken rhythmic approach, cannily showcasing her love of alien electronics and fuzzy ambient textures over stabbing analogue bass and sweaty, jazz-wise machine drums.

  4. Das Bild Das Wiederkehrt (5:52)
Review: Self-proclaimed "techno body music" duo Schwefelgelb seem a neat fit with Cititrax, the Minimal Wave sub-label set up to handle contemporary electronic music rather than reissues. There's something particularly muscular, robust and otherworldly about their label debut, which remarkably is their first EP of original tracks for two years. Opener "Die Dunne Hand" sets the tone, with the pair conjuring up a throbbing, mind-altering EBM-funk workout that sounds like an unlikely Nitzer Ebb cover version of the KLF's "What Time Is Love", while "Auf Die Erde" sees them wrap crunchy percussion and dystopian vocal snippets around a surging EBM bassline. Side B begins with the stripped-back metallic mutant funk of "Die Augen Gehen", before the duo dives into chugging, flash-fried industrial/electro/techno fusion on the mind-bending "Das Blid Das Wiederkehrt".

  4. Weep For Joy (4:56)
Review: Central Processing Unit chief CP Smith is keeping tight-lipped about the identity of the shadowy producer(s) behind the Secret State project. Smith describes this debut EP as "an attempt to rise above the all-pervasive, vacuous, decaying culture." We'll let you judge whether the men or women of mystery have succeeded in that aim, but we certainly think it's a fine EP. By CPU standards, it's a rather eclectic affair, flitting between druggy, arpeggio-driven alien funk ("CIA UFO Google Search"), ghetto-tech influenced deep electro (the wonderful "De-Pattern"), sparkling dacenfloor electro positivity ("The Sleep Room") and glistening, bass-heavy techno/proto-house/deep house fusion (sublime closer "Weep For Joy").

  3. Scales (4:02)
  4. Dystopian Preset (4:20)
Review: Is FaltyDL's Blueberry Records imprint getting tastier by the release or is it just us? Here we find mysterious chefs Secret State following up releases on Varvet and CPU with four outstanding 21st century electro jams. "Blast" lives up to its name with a pumping, cosmic 150 BPM salvo before the breaks start entering the mix on "Just Because" where layers of spiralling arpeggios weave tightly together. "Scales" brings a little b-boy blend to the mix while "Dystopian Preset" washes us away down the electro plughole and leaves us swimming in fractured rivers of slimy bass. You could imagine Stingray dropping something like this. Don't keep these a secret.

  1. Shimmerdown (9:56)
  2. Solas (7:21)
  3. Recollect (6:32)
Review:
Four years on from putting this EP out digitally, John Selway starts his own new label with a first ever vinyl pressing of it. He is an artist with a history that dates back to the nineties and takes in some high class minimal and electro funk on a range of labels, as well as plenty of production credits with Deep Dish, and this EP is one of his best. 'Shimmerdown' is super cosmic deep house with a synth based soul straight out of Detroit, while 'Solas' shows off a more high speed techno sound that is riddled with trippy motifs that keep your mind working. 'Recollect' is more stripped back, darker and pensive and completes an EP rich in stylistic variation.

Light Language EP

  1. We Are Ready (6:05)
  2. Light Language (7:20)
  3. Gravity Probe (6:19)
  4. Stars In The Gutter (6:04)
Review: When John Selway brought his dancing hands to the keyboard to begin work on his first full EP on Serotonin Records since 'Zoids Vol 2' in 1998, he channelled cosmic soul to create the next generation of intergalactic funk. His EP 'Light Language' surfs the solar winds to the space between breaks and electro where his musical adventures are free to explore the frontiers of dance. 'Light Language' permeates with the angelic voices of our true selves. The voice is the primary and complete musical instrument. When John was not yet born his mother sang to him in utero. A musical soul so innate it resonates celestial tonalities. All captured here on this twelve inch disk delivered by the galaxian voyager and pressed for human kind by Serotonin Records.
