Maloya EP
Maloya EP (12" + insert)
Cat: ANR 002. Rel: 11 Apr 18
  1. Lindigo - "Tany Be" (Alma Negra remix) (7:13)
  2. Salem Tradition - "Kabare" (Alma Negra rework) (5:15)
  3. Lindigo - "Tany Be" (Alma Negra dub) (8:55)
Review: For the latest excursion on their eponymous label, the Alma Negra crew is in full remix mode, in turn reworking tracks from contemporary Maloya combo Lindigo and lesser-known French Afro artist Salem Tradition. Their vocal and dub interpretations of the former's "Tany Be" are particularly special. While the dub is little more than a killer spaced-out percussion track with added delay-laden vocal and instrumental snippets, the "remix" is a near perfect fusion of woozy, spacey deep house and traditional maloya - all half-chanted vocals, snaking sax lines and warm bass. Those looking for heavy and druggy, kick-drum driven tribal Afro-house vibes should head straight for the remix of Salem Tradition's "Kabare", which is little more than loads of drums with an evocative vocal atop.

Nomad EP
Nomad EP (12")
Cat: THEOM 024. Rel: 18 Oct 17
  1. Nomad (8:06)
  2. Gran Turismo (4:47)
  3. Cold Front (7:06)
Review: Those who were inspired by the rise of nu-disco throughout the 2000s should already own a fair few AN-2 records or remixes. The Theomatic label founder was prolific throughout the last decade, but all but vanished from view around 2011. This is his first EP for six years, and sees him join forces with old pal Samos, whose last release landed almost a decade ago. Opener "Nomad" is probably the EP's standout track, featuring as it does a brilliant blend of chugging Italo-disco bottom end, psychedelic acid lines, dreamy chords and mind-altering Greek style instrumentation. That said, we're also big fans of rubbery, P-funk influenced electro excursion "Gran Turismo", while slow motion closer "Cold Front" is a prize chunk of trippy, dubbed-out Balearic disco.

Who, What, Where, When & Why
Cat: BST X057. Rel: 13 May 19
  1. Who, What, Where, When & Why (Disco version) (5:10)
  2. No Promises (Disco version) (6:46)
Review: Best Records do it again, dusting down a searing slice of robo-funk from the early 80s that will pop your lock every which way. B Funk was a one-off project from Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco, best known for their incredible work as Klein & MBO. They released the "Magic Spell" album in 1983, and it was loaded with richly produced Italo disco and proto house sounds - there's a good reason the original release has been fetching such crazy prices on the second hand market. Now Best have cherry picked two of the finest cuts from the album, sought out the extended disco versions from Carrasco's vaults, and given them a glorious new pressing.

Cat: BAB 001 CLEAR. Rel: 13 Jul 20
  1. Melvin Bliss - "Synthetic Substitution" (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (4:17)
Review: The popular Breaks & Beats series of light-touch, DJ-friendly re-edits of soul and funk classics has decided to reissue some of its most sought-after seven-inch singles on clear vinyl pressings. Fittingly, the first to get the reissue treatment is the label's first ever release from 2017. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's warm, heartfelt, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original is largely kept in-tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat. Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.

  1. Melvin Bliss - "Syntheic Substitution" (extended Break edit) (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (extended Break edit) (4:17)
Review: This tasty, DJ-friendly 7" single boasts two extended, break-heavy reworks of obscure and in-demand soul workouts. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's superb, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original - all heartfelt vocals, jaunty keys and warm bass - is largely kept in tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat, which was sampled several times during hip-hop's "golden era".

  10. Superprince - "Dependable" (edit) (6:56)
Review: To mark their 50th release, Brooklyn scalpel fiends Razor-N-Tape has put together a triple-pack of tried-and-tested reworks from some of the scene's heaviest hitters. It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

  3. ATFC - "Bad Habit" (feat Lisa Millett - Dr Packer remix) (6:41)
  4. Soul Rebels - "I'll Be Good" (feat Lisa Millett - Dr Packer remix) (6:31)
Review: Defected's disco-minded Glitterbox offshoot has decided to dip a toe into the choppy waters (sorry) of the re-edit scene. The man at the control is fun-time rework specialist Dr Packer, an Australian scalpel specialist who has spent the last few years contributing tidy edits to a variety of well-regarded labels. First, he adds a little late '80s house shuffle to a soul-fired, boogie-era disco classic, before turning the equally familiar "Still in Love" into a bouncy, club-ready chunk of disco-house full of swirling strings and Chic-style guitars. On the flip the good doctor gets his hands a much-sampled electrofunk workout, retaining the drum delays while adding a touch of nu-disco swagger, before brilliantly dubbing out and tooling up the synth-heavy swagger of 1985 hit "I'll Be Good".

  3. Johnny Corporate - "Sunday Shoutin'" (Dr Packer remix) (6:49)
  4. Cleptomaniacs - "All I Do" (feat Bryan Chambers - Dr Packer remix) (6:49)
Review: UK disco sensation Glitterbox light the touch paper on another fizzy summer with four gossamer smooth edits of four seminal house classics. Gliding us through time to soulful house's golden era with a sassy, loose groove shine to each edit; Soulsearcher's 96 anthem "Can't Get Enough!" gets respectfully plumped, Shapeshifter's 2003 sing-along bomb "Lola's Theme" is stripped back to a stark funk groove while Johnny Corporate's 2000 hit "Sunday Shoutin'" gets flipped into slinky bassline wriggler. Finally one of the best covers Stevie Wonder has ever had gets a luxurious rub down as Cleptomaniacs' 2000 swoon-fest enjoys the full Packer treatment. Summer starts here.

Review: More quality grooves from Washington DC label specializing in reissuing obscure and unknown 70s and 80s dance music. This time around is Dreamcast who are Davon Bryant in conjunction with Swedish guy Sasac aka King Al. "Liquid Deep" is sexy late night deep funk the way it was always intended and Bryant's smooth as silk vocals are just like... Wow! So with Dreamcast on the vocals and Sasac on the beat, we are hoping there's more things on the way from this trans coastal duo in 2017.

  3. Totem (Hardway Brothers remix) (7:15)
  4. Totem (Otologic dub) (5:04)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kinfolk, but the broad-sweeping label with cosmic chuggery in its bones is back with this powerful dose from Ess O Ess and Saulrichards. "Totem" is an epic track that rolls around in the muck somewhere between shoegaze extravagance, post-rock heaviness and psyched-out electronics. The "Swamp Crawl" version of the track keeps the guitars bedded deep within the mix, but there's space for more expressive synth work. Hardway Brothers take the track on a similarly rockist journey, but take their time building up to a climax. Otologic wrap things up with a deadly dub that will have low tempo trippers rubbing their hands with delight.

Review: Italian label Samosa continues to deliver re-edits with "Funk Purpose". Volume three is every bit as strong as its predecessors, with a quartet of experienced re-editors offering up fresh reworks. Get Down Edits set the tone with "Comin' At Ya", a riotously beefy, tooled-up house revision of an urgent funk-soul gem, before Monsieur Van Pratt gleefully dances into disco-funk territory via the spacey synths, groovy bass guitar, crunchy Clavinet licks and fluttering flute solos of "UFO". Over on side B Souldynamic provides some rubbery disco bounce via "Better", while De Gama goes all samba-house with the cowbell-propelled South American style Hammond funk of "Groove On".

The first Discipline Of Swing kicks off with Gledd laying down a chunky house beat and some liquid funk lines on "Doin' My Thang", before Monsieur Van Pratt buffs up a chant-a-long burner of the highest order for "Everybody On The Floor". Saint Paul kicks off the B-side with the jubilant string hooks and sax wriggles of "You're The One", and Castle Queenside rolls out "Day Old Data" in another expert swirl of finely selected and tastefully treated disco funk.

  5. Scruscru - "Surfin' On Hokusai's Waves" (5:04)
  6. Buzz Compass - "That Nighter" (4:49)
Review: Belarus' Iner launches a new label with a strong cast of international names all pushing a deep and distinguished strain of house music for those who want soul and invention in equal measure. Tilman is up first with 'Sweet Dreamer', a mellow, looped up roller. Sune's 'Flutes' takes a breezier approach shaped out by fluttering jazz funk motifs. Yann Polewka celebrates the sweetest Philly strings and some classic vocal licks for a disco-infused burner you can't help but love. Iner himself keeps things loose and organic on the wonderful 'Respectfull Kind Music', while Scruscru goes for a sleek approach to chopped up funky house. That leaves it to Buzz Compass to get heady and hazy with the bass-leaning cuts coursing through 'That Nighter'.

Review: Premier revisitations from hot to trot Parisian love station, the ninth edition continues to dig deep into the realms of the long-lost and highly collectable. The lead track, KIC's "Don't You Want My Love", for example, now fetches triple figures. Elsewhere SPG's "Loveland" is a fly-by-night falsetto funk shakedown while 24 Karat Gold's rare "New Love" struts with stunning string stabs and an energy that flares from zero to glitterball in two bars. TCB Band's "Children Of The Future" closes the sneaky session with a sweet harmonic hot chocolate soul. Blink and you'll miss it.

  2. Coeo - "Clouds" (6:51)
  3. Moony Me - "Soul Mirage" (5:59)
  4. Sune - "I'll Be Right Back" (5:27)
Review: The second instalment in the Tale of Tales series brings with it four more reasons to be cheerful. Dirt Crew regular Felix Leifur steps up first with "Eitt", a lovably loose, dusty and occasionally wonky trip into blazed jazz-house territory. The jazzy mood continues on Toy Tronics duo COEO's rolling deep houser "Clouds", before Moony Me peppers a bustling, organic-sounding groove with sparkling synth refrains and drowsy chords on the thrillingly hazy "Soul Mirage". Sune opts for a far more bustling, chunkier beat pattern on skewed disco-house caper "I'll Be Right Back", which features some superbly cut-up and rearranged vibraphone solos alongside punchy horn samples and a brilliant post-breakdown drop.

  3. Til I Found You (6:10)
  4. Til I Found You (dub) (5:40)
Review: For the last 18 months disco and boogie legend Leroy Burgess - owner of the most distinctive voice in the game - has been touring Europe with a band of Lyon-based musicians known as Saving Coco. It makes sense, then, that he would eventually go into the studio with them to record some new material. The results are impressive. The jaunty, Clavinet-heavy brilliance of "Work It Out" is reminiscent of some of Burgess' best boogie-era work with The Fantastic Aleems and fittingly comes accompanied by a Dub mix rich in piano and synth solos. "Til I Found You" is a slap bass-propelled exercise in good grooves and even better vocals. It, too, is backed by a stripped back but musically expansive Dub mix.

Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

Now the track gets a full vinyl release for all pop-friendly spinners to get the maximum mileage out of this immaculate slice of sunkissed funk. The original version appears in extended form, brimming with slick '80s tinged disco notes and a sweeter-than-honey vocal line. LUXXURY then offer up a remix which takes on some Italo arpeggios while keeping the essence of the tune very much intact. On the flip you can dive into the instrumental version if you just want to home in on the groove itself before Impakt offer up a shimmering downtempo version for blissed out moments beyond the dance.

Review: Those fine folks behind the otherworldly Multi-Culti imprint have decided to launch a re-edit series, naturally focusing on reworks of weird and wonderful, off-kilter gems from around the world. This first serving of Cult Edits naturally contains some seriously tasty and exotic fare, most notably the parping, horn-heavy shuffle of Manfredas's "Mani From The Block", a stretched-out interpretation of what appears to be a Turkish style funk weird-out. Flip to the B-side for two more heavyweight slabs of wild goodness: the low-slung, dub-fired post-punk insanity of Siaubas's "Hare Hare" rework, and the throbbing, chant-along drug-chug of Simple Symmetry's brilliant "Yalla" interpretation.

Review: Thus far, Cult Edits has proved to be one of the most interesting and intriguing rework re-edits series around, with each 12-inch offering an impressive selection of cosmic, exotic and otherworldly reworks. Volume four continues on a similar theme. Manfredas kicks things off with the dirty ragga-house pressure of "Riddim", before Thomass Jackson has his way with a far-out tribal disco chugger on EP standout "Build The Bridge". Mid-'80s electronic Afro-chug is the order of the day on Balam's "Lentombi", while Inigo Vontier's "Makata" is percussive, heavily electronic, weird and undeniably druggy. In comparison, Sano's chant-along Afro-electro number "Bantu" is positively breezy.

Review: Three cosmic disco charmers from Italian stallion Giordani (who you may recognise as one half of Marvin & Guy). "Non Me Lo So Spiegare" is a pulsating piece of instrumental emotive laced with a striking synth riff while the other two tracks let the vocoder take the lead. "Rolandia" paints a lamenting vocal over an insistent arpeggio while "Se Ritornerai" takes us deep into synthwave territory. Pristine synths, emotional vocals and great moments of space, it's an epic finale to an exceptional EP.

  1. Mighty Baron III - "Screwe'd" (3:34)
  2. Sun Runners - "The Finest" (4:14)
Review: The latest audio missive from Funkineven's Apron camp has been receiving a lot of heat, and it's easy to see why. In typical style, both tracks take classic boogie and '80s soul jams, impressively mangling them in distinctly different ways. Mighty Baron III's "Screwed" is a "chopped and screwed" masterpiece - a fusion of sludgy, slowed-down electrfunk loops, pitched-down vocals and wonky beatbox rhythms. It's distinctively odd, but really rather special. Flip for the Sun Runners' "The Finest", a smart and melodious S.O.S Band re-edit that's been pepped up with additional drum machine hits and special effects. It will do the business on both boogie and R&B dancefloors.

Attack The Dancefloor Vol 13
  1. Mistura - "Do You Love Me?" (feat Angela Johnson - Joey Negro Disco Blend) (6:20)
  2. Sylvester - "I Need You" (Opolopo remix) (7:55)
  3. Neapolitan Soul - "Welcome To The Dub" (11:44)
  4. Raquel Rodriguez - "We Go Together" (Joey Negro club mix) (6:21)
Review: Over the years, Z Records' "Attack The Dancefloor" series has proved to be a serious source of tried-and-tested club cuts in a disco-centric style. Volume 13 is full to bursting with must-have tracks too. Label boss Dave Lee sets the tone, donning his famous Joey Negro alias to deliver a sumptuously summery "Disco Blend" of Mistura's Angela Johnson-voiced "Do You Love Me?" before Opolopo steals the show by turning Sylvester's surging disco anthem "I Need You" into a synth-sporting chunk of revivalist disco-boogie. Neapolitan Soul's "Welcome To The Dub" is a punchy chunk of disco-house laden in percussion and cute instrumental touches, while Lee's Joey Negro Club mix of Raquel Rodriguez's "We Go Together" is a sweet and seductive fusion of jazz-funk instrumentation and celebratory disco grunt.

  4. Sartorial - "Little Love" (6:29)
Review: By now we should all know what to expect from the Tropical Disco Records collective: namely respectable floor-friendly re-edits underpinned by chunky house drums. Moodena handles the A-side, first tidying up and beefing up a disco-funk jam rich in life-affirming piano solos ("What Da Funk"), before reaching for the filter sweeps on the trumpet, trombone and saxophone-laden Brazilian disco flex of "The Horns". Over on side B, Sammy Deuce dons his hot pants for a cheery romp through string-laden disco-house territory ("Smack My Strings Up") before Sartorial rounds things off with his filter disco house edit on the infectious rolling, peak-time friendly romp that is "Little Love".

  4. Gledd & The Funk District - "Late At Midnight" (5:49)
Review: London's Tropical Disco are back with their eleventh edition of superb edits. All re-spliced and remixed with precision and above all - respectf! First up is label boss Tim Burnett aka Moodena who reuses a rather familiar hook on the funked-up brass section of "The Chase", followed by the lo-slung and sultry late night business of "Addicted To You" by Alex Satrorial on the A side. On the flip, we have got Parisian Chevals (Masterworks/Hotwax) going deep on the sensual boogie-down groove of "Saturn In Tropical" followed by an oldie but a goodie in the form of Gledd & The Funk District's "Late At Night".

  2. Sartorial & Moodena - "Turn It Up" (6:43)
  3. Sartorial - "6 Million" (6:16)
  4. Sartorial - "Feel The Heat" (6:47)
Review: Label heads Sartorial and Moodeena present the latest volume in the suitably summery Tropical Disco edits series, with the latter kicking things off with "Gil's Groove", a wonderfully positive revision of a Brazilian jazz-funk jam that underpins the original electric piano solos and sun-kissed instrumentation with spacey electronic flourishes and a head-nodding house groove. It's followed by a storming, sax-laden collaborative re-edit romp, as the scalpel-wielding duo gets to work on a familiar disco-funk smasher producing their version which features plenty of filter tricks and a rock solid rhythm track. On side B, Sartorial takes the spotlight, first delivering a soaring disco-house cut rich in swirling strings and funk-fired guitars ("6 Million"), before successfully tooling up a bouncy, head-in-the-clouds disco number ("Feel The Heat").

Review: The Tropical Disco crew is back with more disco funk from all around the world. Moodena opens up with "Jezebel" with its big horn stabs and knotted bass riffs that will make you move and groove. Sartorial ups the sexy sax, pump the drums and get steamy on "Night Shade" before things take a more cool and breezy turn on the sliding and gliding grooves of Conan Liquid Presents The Crates Motel Collective's "Gotta Scratch". For those who like the big licks, stomping kicks and diva cries, Igor Gonya comes through with some gold to close things out.

Review: The always funky Tropical Disco Records is back with a 15th fantastic instalment of feel good, playful disco sounds that have you dying for warmer days and brighter nights. It's another various artist affair as is their MO, and Moodena goes first with some horn led disco funk. Sartorial's "Together" is a breezier, beach roller with a sense of cool jazz authority that gets you feeling loved up. Monsieur Van Pratt then brings big Philly strings next to some squelchy acid synth funk before Vagabundo Club Social closes things out with the afro tinged and tribal disco groove of "Encanto Nigeriano".

Review: Tropical Disco are back with Volume 13, unveiling four cuts of disco-house dancefloor shakers on the ever-burgeoning imprint. As a deep, party starting package for jazzed out, groove loving freaks, this one is essential! On the A side label boss Moodena steps up with the funky and lo-slung party starter "Do What You Wanna Do" which is perfect to set the mood, followed by co-head Sartorial on the sultry and hypnotic disco loops of "Kool Geeza". On the flip, Austrian artist Munky Fike goes full on Latin with a wicked brass section on "Funky Disco Queen" before San Diego based production duo Castle Queenside return to the label to round things out with the sun kissed "You've Always Been".

Review: With only a few months between releases, Tropical Disco have gone from zero to disco heroes in just over 18 months. And it's not hard to hear why; proper digging, chunky cuts and full dancefloor focus as the label founders Sartorial (Alex Sartori) and Moodena (Tim Burnett) invite two new label crewmates to the party deck; Phazed Groove and C Da Afro. Each sailor bringing a different vibe from pure, uncut boogie to thumping Chi-town jazz-licked house, it's yet another perfect voyage. Balmy army!

  4. Sartorial - "Electric Lane" (5:58)
Review: At the time of writing, Britain is basking in what feels like its 79th consecutive day of baking hot sunshine. What could be better, then, than another dose of tropical disco reworks from Sartorial and Moodena's fast-rising Tropical Disco imprint? Certainly, we can see a few open-air parties going wild to the impeccable piano solos and George Benson style jazz guitars of Moodeena's gently housed-up opener "Strawberry Jam", while Sartorial's "Feel It" is an urgent, guitar-laden rework of a familiar disco-funk favourite that should get things going on recognition factor alone. On the flip, Sartorial and Simon Kennedy successfully play around with a Pleasure-esque, jazz-funk-meets-disco number ("Got You The Floor"), before Sartorial gets the filters out for a tops-off dance through jazzy disco territory ("Electric Lane").

  2. SoulBrigada - "Gonna Do" (5:55)
  3. The Funk District - "Anywhere You Like" (6:20)
  4. DJ Rocca - "Da Lion Groove" (6:52)
Review: It would be fair to say that this second part of the third instalment in Samosa's "Funk Purpose" series includes re-edits and sneaky remixes by some of the biggest hitters in the re-edit and nu-disco scenes. GAMM and Glitterbox regular Moplen leads the charge and in the process delivers a suitably sweaty, percussive and breathless peak-time disco-funk workout called "Ain't No Dub About It". Italian veteran DJ Rocca also impresses with another disco-funk rework, "Da Lion Groove", which successfully rearranges a heavyweight, horn-sporting affair previously re-edited by the Unabombers way back in the early 2000s. Elsewhere, SoulBrigada's "Gonna Do" is a relaxed and loved-up mid-tempo tweak of a saucer-eyed disco number, while the Funk District's "Anywhere You Like" is a tooled-up house revision of a punchy Blaxploitation-era number.
