The Sensational Disciples - "My Own Way" (2:24)
Elder William Smith - "His Voice" (3:02)
Review: The reverend of many aliases, Kris Holmes returns with two more woozy slabs of raw funk. Following "Bumps In The Road" earlier this year, both "My Own Way" and "His Voice" are captured with full feeling and atmosphere from the room with warm lo-fi brilliance. The former goes for more of a straight-soul feel while the latter is gutsy piece of gospel funk that will could convert the baddest sinner in seconds. Lord have mercy.

Review: Special guests Tamar Osborn and Myele Manzanza feature on this debut EP from September Sun. It is a brilliantly evocative offering that brings to mind warm summer morning and hay sunsets with lots of tender sax lines, florid fleets and Latin-flecked percussion. 'September Sun' is a widescreen affair with delightful piano keys dancing next to expressive flutes that flutter way up high. 'Morning Song' is just as freeform and new age in its hippie overtones., while the rhythms here are a little slower and more pensive. Gorgeous stuff.

Review: The Shake & Bake Band's Shake & Bake is an undeniable invitation to hit the dancefloor. Side-1 kicks off with 'Shake & Bake (part 1),' where the band lays down a groove that's nothing short of exhilarating. The track stands out for its originality, offering a vibe that feels almost hedonisticiperfect for those looking to experience something fresh and exciting. On Side-2, 'Shake & Bake (part 2)' strips things down, bringing in a hoedown-like twist with the addition of a harmonica. The drumming intensifies, building excitement as the funkiness truly shines through in this version. Overall, Shake & Bake delivers two distinctive takes on a groove that will keep the energy high and the dancefloor moving.

Review: This record comes at a sad time, as Marlena Shaw passed away in January 2024, the New York born soul singer with her unmistakable voice leaving a long list of amazing credits and performances when she departed. This magnificent double 7" focuses on her early years in the late 1960s, work she did on the highly influential Cadet label just before she moved to Blue Note. 'California Soul', 'Liberation Conversation', 'Let's Wade In The Water' and 'Woman Of The Ghetto' are all soul classics by the late songbird, and all gathered togethere here into one unmissable EP.

Beber's Cha Cha (4:06)
Old Tart (4:59)
Review: This marks a first 7" from bassist and composer Shay Hazan playing alongside his quintet in their native Tel Aviv, Israel. The a-side is a dedication to a giant of the Israeli jazz scene and a sometime mentor of Hazan, saxophonist Albert Beger, with uptempo chord work and swirling drums that make you want to spin around like you just don't care. After that bit of joyous but sophisticated jazz comes 'Old Tart', a more slow burning tune that builds through big horns, spare but dramatic chords and tumbling percussion until you are in raptures. This is likely the start of big things for this crew.

Review: The Record Store Day 2023 specials are coming thick and fast and thankfully the quality seems high this year. This 7" in particular is a crucial one for any Southern soul fans. It is a mega rare one from the vast JB Records vaults that due to popular demand finally gets an official reissue. It's not one that appears often in original form - the last copy fetched over 400 quid several years ago now. And it's easy to see why - the Baton Rouge crossover soul of Cynthia Sheeler's 'I'll Cry Over' will melt your heart and lift you off your feet all at once.

Attica Blues (4:49)
Quiet Dawn (5:58)
Review: Most experts agree that Archie Shepp's 1972 album "Attica Blues" is one of the finest soul-jazz LPs ever made - a politically-charged affair that just gets better with every listen. This tidy seven-inch single from Mr Bongo offers up two of the album's standout moments. On the A-side you'll find the title track, a swirling, down-low mixture of belted-out female chorus vocals, surging orchestration, Blaxploitation style bottom end and an impassioned lead vocal from Henry Hull. Flipside cut "Quiet Dawn" sees Waheeda Massey take lead vocals over a more obviously jazz-centric backing track rich in wild sax solos from the effervescent Shepp. Like the A-side, it's simply essential.

Review: American producer and multi-instrumentalist Shigeto hails from Detroit and has an enviable formal training in jazz. However, to date he has largely dealt in fantastically melodic electronic music that draws on hip hop and broken beats on Ghostly International. But now, this new "Versions EP" finds him going full jazz for the first time. It sees the Ann Arbour man reinterpret tracks from his own back catalogue with some talented guests including, amongst others, Dez Andres. The results are mellifluous - it's a spiritual affair with lavish drums, xylophones, trumpets and percussion making for persuasive and emotive grooves that glow with golden soul.

Wilson Simonal - "Nana" (2:50)
Osmar Milito - "Rita Jeep" (2:20)
Review: The Brazil 45s series from Latin diggers extraordinaire Mr Bongo reaches its 24th edition and its becoming clear Wilson Simonal de Castro is a favourite of the label curators. "Nana" is the Rio artist's fourth appearance in the series thus far and is a rather lush samba jazz affair with horns and strings aplenty backing Wilson's delightful vocal delivery. Originally issued as part of the 1964 album A Nova Dimensao Do Samba, this airing from Mr Bongos is the first time the track has appeared on 7" in 50 years and is complemented by "Rita Jeep", a early 70s track from Osmar Milito that was penned by the legend Jorge Ben!

Trio Mocoto - "Nao Adianta" (4:04)
Review: Wilson Simonal - Nem Vem Que Nao Tem
An instant and super catchy samba-MPB hit made famous by its inclusion in Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund's 'City Of God'. This is a firm Simonal favourite at Mr Bongo HQ.

Simonal was a hugely successful singer in the 1960's and early 70's; one of the most popular artists in Brazil infact. 'Nem Vem Que Nao Tem' was previously released on 7" by Odeon in France and Spain, and appears on his 'Alegria, Alegria !!!' LP on Odeon Brazil, released in 1967

Trio Mocoto - Nao Adianta
Trio Mocoto were one of Jorge Ben Jr's main backing bands and highly influential to his sound. They recorded with him on the seminal 'Forca Bruta', 'Negro E Lindo' and 'Tabua de Esmeralda' LP's.

'Nao Adianta' first appeared on Trio Mocoto's self-titled 1977 Arlequim LP. It was subsequently released on 7" in Spain, Portugal and Italy (and we are assuming in France too).

Trio Mocoto - "Nao Adianta" (4:06)
Review: A dynamic duo of Brazilian classics on 7" from Wilson Simonal and Trio Mocoto. On Side-1. you have the infectious samba-MPB hit 'Nem Vem Que Nao Tem' by Wilson Simonal, a standout from his 1967 Alegria, Alegria !!! album. This track gained renewed fame in 2002 when it was featured in the critically acclaimed film City of God, exciting new audiences with its lively rhythms. On the flip side, Trio Mocoto delivers the orchestral-infused gem 'Nao Adianta,' first appearing on their self-titled 1977 Arlequim LP. Known for their collaboration with Jorge Ben on seminal albums like 'Forca Bruta,' this group was instrumental in developing the samba rock sound, blending samba, soul, and rock with an unmistakable sun-kissed flavor. This release is a vibrant celebration of Brazil's rich musical heritage, capturing the essence of two legendary acts in one compelling package.

I Love You (4:24)
Review: A short name hides a long story - Detroit-born Chad Hughs graduated from the same high school as Diana Ross, going onto become a multi-talented musician as well as a teacher and composer. The fourth release from cd exclusive vinyl pressers Jai Alai, collectors can now own this unique 7" containing two completely different sides of Sir Wick from his two albums. A side's title track 'Seal My Heart' contains the vocal talents of Sedalia Marie, with layered vocals and a baseline that makes this pure soul song feel deeply cinematic. The B side has been decades in the making, selected from a fully orchestrated musical in the works since 1996, finally being recorded and completed in 2017. These two tracks are deeply sentimental ditties of doting young love, and now two rare soul ballads from a musical luminary are available for the first time on a 45. What better soundtrack to date night than these?

The track has plenty of classic James Brown overtones and makes for an extravagant funk sound with newly recorded vocals that really hit the spot. The synths are bright and contemporary, the jumbled drums loose but driving and the vibes impossible to ignore. This is Situationism's first funk 7" specially crafted for RSD 2020 and it is a standout one.

Review: Benedic Lamdin, known as Nostalgia 77, continues to impress with this dynamic 7' release featuring tracks from his Skeletons project. Mulatu, a standout from the 2010 LP Skeletons - Smile, pays homage to the legendary Mulatu Astatke. Lamdin effortlessly channels the spirit of African jazz, but with his own twist, creating a track that's even groovier, funkier, and heavier than its inspiration. It's a slow burner that thrills with its deep rhythms and intricate layers. On Side-2, Positive Force is a high-energy original that perfectly complements the first side. With its vibrant, uptempo vibe, it's an ideal choice for lively gatherings or backyard barbecues. Lamdin's ability to seamlessly blend different genres shines through on both tracks.

Review: Kawasaki are digging back into the archive of cult Japanese jazz group Sleep Walker to present this perfect 7" of edits from the band's catalogue. First up on the A side is 'Into The Sun', the 2004 track featuring Bembe Segue which gets a bang-tidy nip and tuck from Yoshihiro Kino. Flip it over for 2007 track 'Wind', which features Yukimi Nagano and gets a thoroughly excellent edit courtesy of DJ Kawasaki himself. Tapping into a more recent iteration of Japanese jazz and presenting it in a spin-friendly format for the DJs out there, this one comes highly recommended.

Coming about at a comically Afrofuturistic career highpoint, 'Stay Loose' is an immediately arresting jazz funk cut, documenting Smith's insistence that the listener stay loose, open-minded, soft of heart. Review: We're rather excited by the prospect of Blue Note's forthcoming "Reimagined" compilation, which sees a variety of rising stars from the UK's jazz, soul and R&B scenes delivering new interpretations of classic cuts from the legendary jazz label's vast back catalogue. This teaser single features two of the more striking and talked-about covers. Jorja Smith takes on St Germain's early noughties jazz-house masterpiece "Rose Rouge", brilliantly re-imagining it as a deep, fluid and dreamy nu-jazz number rich in authentic instrumentation, shimmering electronics and effortlessly soulful vocals. It's genuinely brilliant. Over on the flip, the Ezra Project takes on Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", somehow mixing up hip-hop, post-bop jazz, funk and Afrobeat to create a stunning new interpretation. There aren't many of these around, so act fast to avoid disappointment.

Review: The 12th release on Mr. Bongo's signature 45s series saw a reissue of two foundational releases in Brazil's modern popular music category; now the record hears a second round, fresh again off the master metal lacquer. On the A, we hear Brazilian samba luminary Elza Soares covering Jorge Ben's classic 'Mas Que Nada' - albeit with a hoarser vocal tone, such was Soares' signature voice, one which only led to a whopping 34-album career. B-sider Elizabeth, by contrast, upholds a mystery; the artist was nicknamed "Gatinha do Mato" ("jungle cat"), and recorded 'Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente' at some indeterminate point in 1960s Sao Paolo, when and where Brazilian local styles blended with funk and rock.

Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: Formed in 2017, the Sokratis Votskos Quartet is fast becoming one of the leading lights in Greek jazz. Later in the year they'll be releasing a brand new album on Jazzman, from which this tasty double A-side is taken. "Almopian Etude" is a veritable humid summer breeze of a track: a loose and languid fusion of spiritual piano motifs, languid double bass, bustling drums and alternately snaking and intoxicating horn solos. B-side "Sevenates" is an altogether funkier proposition, with cyclical saxophone motifs increasing in intensity over a jumpy, piano-driven rhythm track. It's not exactly jazz-funk, but it's certainly travelling in that direction. Either way, it's ace.

They have a new album due in early 2020, hence this taster single. Review: The Sorcerers usher in something of a new era here with Exit Athens, which is a further investigation of the worlds of Ethio-jazz and library music from the 60s and 70s. Now the group consists of Joost Hendrickx who has made his mark with the likes of Kefaya, Shatner's Bassoon and Abstract Orchestra, as well as Richard Ormrod on saxes, keys and flutes and ATA label head and bassist Neil Innes. The rhythms here are driving and funky with exotic percussion and plenty of vintage keys as well as great combinations of horns, flutes and vibes. It's a maximal sound but one drenched in soul and which immediately transports you to another world.

The Sorcerers - "In Pursuit Of Shai Hulud" (3:41)
The Yorkshire Film & Television Orchestra - "The Anderson Spectrum" (3:00)
Review: The Sorcerers have been a mainstay of the ATA Records imprint since it was founded in their home city of Leeds back in 2015. Here, the Yorkshire combo, whose primary influences have always been Ethopian "Ethio-jazz" and obscure European horror soundtracks, return to action with a heavyweight dancefloor workout. In truth "In Search of Sha Hulud" is a far more funk-fuelled affair than you might expect, with exoitic Middle Eastern melodies and fluttering flute solos rising above killer drum breaks and a seriously heavy bassline. Turn to the flipside for "The Anderson Spectrum", a pitched-down, 1960s style library funk jam credited to The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra, which appears to be another project helmed by leading members of the Sorcerers.

Jazz
Orbit Bound (4:45)
NV (3:33)
Review: The latest limited-edition salvo on Jazzman's contemporary jazz offshoot Jazz45 comes courtesy of Soren Skov Orbit, a Copenhagen-based outfit formed by saxophonist Soren Lyhne Skov and pianist Peder Vind. The two tracks stick closely to the project's founding principles of fusing global musical traditions with modal jazz. A-side "Orbit Bound", where hissing cymbals, hypnotizing piano motifs, plodding double bass and ear-catching saxophone solos cluster around a droning bass clarinet, is probably the pick of the pair, though the more straight-up, trad-jazz warmth of "NV" is also very enjoyable. As debut outings go, it's hugely impressive; here's hoping we hear more from Skov and Vind in the months and years ahead.

Library/Archive
Mad Town (3:08)
Ultima Caccia (3:54)
Review: Four Flies present the first ever 45rpm to be taken from Giuliano Sorgini's masterpiece album Zoo Folle. The library and soundtrack specialist cooked up some irresistibly groovy and funky sounds on the record and two of the best are picked here for serious DJ deployment only. 'Mad Town' opens up with some killer and funky drum breaks with a slick flute line adding extra pizzazz up top. It's a psyched out number for big dance floor moments an on the flip, 'Ultima Caccia' is a more Afro-tinged and tribal number with blissed out drums from Giuliano and some mad funky percussion by session player Enzo Restuccia.

Non Si Deve Profanare Il Sonno Dei Morti (Soundtrack)

Soundtracks
John Dalton Street (2:25)
Manchester M2 6LD (2:26)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of cult Italian horror movies should be aware of the work of Giulliano Sorgini, and in particular his soundtrack to Non Si Deve Profanre Il Sonno Dei Mortie (a movie known in English as both The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie). This Four Flies Records' "45" boasts two of the most potent recordings from the soundtrack. On the A-side you'll find the movie's main theme, 'John Dalton Theme', a superb slab of zombified psych-funk laden with simmering horror strings, loose-limbed percussion solos, crunchy drum-breaks and toasty bass. Over o the flip you'll find 'Manchester M2 6LD', a stripped-back reprise version that replaces Sorgini's cut-glass strings with sustained Hammond organ chords. Happily, the killer groove and righteous drum solos remain in-tact.
