Marcos Valle - "Estrelar" (5:11)
Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti - "Aleluia" (3:52)
Review: Two silky sides of Brazilian disco soul on Mr Bongo's perennial Brazil 45s series. First up, long-haired lothario samba fusionista Marcos teams up with Leon Ware for a pristine polished piece of early 80s disco funk. Golden harmonies, staccato vocals and a super juicy bassline; it's not hard to see why it was his best selling single. Flip for the equally smooth "Alleluia" from Brazilian boogie gospelist; this one is all about the percussion heavy breakdown. Proper sunshine block party business.

Review: Rewind to 1975, Brazilian supergroup Azymuth hit their richest creative vein with this self-titled full-length. Just as the band remain so themselves, this is still hugely relevant and ridiculously on-point considering it's 40 years on the clock. Proof can be found on every track from the sedative harmonic charms of the opener "Linha Do Horizonte", the raw slap bass funk, velvet keys and soaring synths on "Seems Like This" and the frenetic, almost techy mentality of "Wait For My Turn". An essential addition to any collection, this would have blown minds to pieces back in 1975.

Columbia (3:09)
Brujeria (2:58)
Review: One of several new Krafty Kuts edits to fly through the floodgates of late, this 7" amounts to the whopping 28th edition of the esteemed Friday's Funky series. This time hearing the editors handle and reappropriate a swathe of obscure Latin music samples, of lord knows what origin, 'Colombia' amounts to a slick two-toner backed by brass riffs and samples rap interjections. B-side 'Brujeria' is of a similar quality and verve.

Black Sand (4:33)
Review: Mahal by Glass Beams melds a diverse array of influences into a unique and enchanting soundscape. The Melbourne-based trio, shrouded in mystery with their mask-wearing anonymity, lets their music speak volumes. Built around founding member Ranjan Silva, their sound draws from the rich heritage of Ravi Shankar, Bollywood, Electric Light Orchestra, and traditional blues.Inspired by repeated viewings of 'The Concert For George', Silva's vision for Glass Beams seems to echo the fusion George Harrison envisioned when introducing classical Indian music to Western pop. The EP opens with 'Horizon,' setting a serene tone before leading into the title track 'Mahal,' an instrumental piece that envelops the listener in its mystical charm. 'Orb' follows with a riveting bass riff, while 'Snake Oil' delves deeper into Indian classical territory, showcasing evocative vocals. The EP concludes with 'Black Sand,' a dramatic and beautiful track featuring interwoven vocals and guitar. As their second EP, following Mirage, Mahal solidifies Glass Beams' distinct place in music, defying categorisation and quietly demanding attention with its almost otherworldly quality.

Review: The name Francisco Tenorio Cerqueira Junior, or simply Tenorio Jr, has always been clouded in mystery. Not only did the renowned Brazilian pianist pass away under dubious circumstances in Argentina back in 1976, but he also put out a surprisingly limited number of albums throughout his short-lived career. Having said that, these are all very valid reasons for why his music remains among the most coveted of items in the jazz scene. Embalo is his only album under the Tenorio Jr name, but its 1964 release is still as fresh today as it was back in a cloud of psych-driven hedonism that permeated all arts scenes back then. Fun and uplifting throughout, the album will satisfy both the jazz traditionalists and those with a slightly more left field taste. The percussion driving the arrangements isn't exactly something to ignore either, with its typical South American flair infusing sublimely into Tenorio's own excellence behind the keyboard. This is an important album which has helped to define a whole generation of later Brazilian musicians, and we recommend you to make it part of your life. It's an essential piece of history.

Eyi Yato (Mad Professor dub) (6:00)
Eyi Yato (8:17)
Review: Sol Power Sound is back in a big way with a reissue and remix EP from the legendary Nigerian Ju-Ju king, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey. The double A-side EP features 'Eyi Yato', a tune from 1981, that captures Chief Commander and his band at their absolute funkiest. It's as if there's something in the name itself - 'Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey' - that commands an almost godlike, daresay tyrannical command over each conjunctive performance here; every one of the All-Stars' parts play back as though they've puppeteered to an autocratic degree, resulting in a funky tightness that only obedience to the most just of authorities can muster. The original, with its boinging jews' harps and wahhing guitars, is the patent highlight; but we're sure you'll be no less pleased to learn of the (double-time! dub disco!) Mad Professor flip (...!) that's on there too (winky face).

Ana Rosely - "Skim Dum Dum Dum" (2:24)
Review: 'Imprevisto' by Bossa Tres and Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' receive well-deserved attention in their remastered reissue by Mr Bongo. Bossa Tres's track, featured as the final piece on their 1965 'Em Forma!' LP, stands out as an unmistakable Brazilian jazz classic. Opening with a dramatic intro and a hypnotic piano line, the song evolves with panned percussion and upright bass, showing the band's refined musicality honed from their early days touring jazz clubs in the USA. This 7" release marks a significant reissue of Bossa Tres's sophisticated sound in a concise format. On Side-2, Ana Rosely's 'Skim Dum Dum Dum' from 1984, originally released by RGE Discos, adds a different flavor with its infectious groove and enigmatic charm. Despite limited information about Rosely, her releases have become sought after for their rarity and musical quality. With 'Skim Dum Dum Dum,' her talent shines brightly within the unique style of Brazilian music. Rosinha Da Valencia - "Summertime" (2:59)
Review: Joyce Moreno, a legendary Rio-born artist, is celebrated for her exceptional voice, musicianship, and songwriting. With over 30 albums in a career spanning more than 50 years, she continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Her iconic track 'Aldeia de Ogum,' known for its vibrant jazzy arrangement and rich samba rhythms, became a staple in London's Acid Jazz scene, championed by DJs Patrick Forge and Gilles Peterson. Originally featured on her 1980 LP Feminina and our 1997 Essential Joyce compilation, this beloved song first appeared on 7" through the Brazil 45 series. Rosinha de Valenca, another Rio native, was a revered composer, arranger, and guitarist who collaborated with giants like Baden Powell and Sergio Mendes. Her instrumental rendition of Gershwin's 'Summertime,' from her 1975 LP Um Violao Em Primeiro Plano, shows off her exquisite guitar skills accompanied by lush strings, delivering an emotionally stirring performance. A lot of great history on one 7".

Wilson Simonal - "Nem Vem Que Nao Tem" (2:31)
Trio Mocoto - "Nao Adianta" (4:06)
Review: A dynamic duo of Brazilian classics on 7" from Wilson Simonal and Trio Mocoto. On Side-1. you have the infectious samba-MPB hit 'Nem Vem Que Nao Tem' by Wilson Simonal, a standout from his 1967 Alegria, Alegria !!! album. This track gained renewed fame in 2002 when it was featured in the critically acclaimed film City of God, exciting new audiences with its lively rhythms. On the flip side, Trio Mocoto delivers the orchestral-infused gem 'Nao Adianta,' first appearing on their self-titled 1977 Arlequim LP. Known for their collaboration with Jorge Ben on seminal albums like 'Forca Bruta,' this group was instrumental in developing the samba rock sound, blending samba, soul, and rock with an unmistakable sun-kissed flavor. Review: Fresh, fabulous and funky reissued trax sourced from the collective mind of the historic group Goma Laca, first released a hell of a long time ago sometime in the indeterminate period between 1920 (!) and 1950 on the Goma-Laca label. Now reissued by Jazz Room, 'Cala Baca Menino' and its counterparts 'Ogum' are two stonking Afrobrasilidades, flaunting the effortless vocals of Russo Passapusso and Jucara Marcal, not to mention the quick double-bass and piano caresses of Marco Paiva and Hercules Gomes respectively, plus Sergio Machado on drums and Gabi Guedes on percussion. Review: Brazilian musician, singer-songwriter and businessman Tim Maia was one of a rare sort among the MPB canon; his musical chops weren't the end of his talents, as he also ran the soul, funk, psych, jazz and samba record label Seroma. The imprint through which Maia would release most of his ingenuities, Seroma saw to releases by Maia and most of his contemporaries and affiliated projects, including J. Quest, Lulu Santos, Sampa Crew and Gilberto Wanderley. But of course, the foremost motif to be funnelled through the Seroma spout has to be Maia's penchant for self-titled records, the fifth of which (his seventh album overall) hears a reissue here. As ever, Tim Maia is an eleven-track balladic dream - it wasn't the first to top the charts in his native Rio de Janeiro either - and commands a veridically vintage sound; when not taking the time to romantically serenade the listener, Maia is heard coolly riffing against wah-funk, or professing head-on collisions of samba and baiao.

Review: There is always a good backstory to the music that Emotional Rescue releases and this EP is a case in point. It comes from Betty & The Code Red and Betty was the girlfriend of Tunde Obazee, a Nigerian-born artist who used music as a "non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice." The pair would entertain people on campus by playing anything they could get their hands on, informed by the old Edo folk songs they had grown up around. They went on to live in Italy and the US and start a family as well as lay down self-released songs that have become cult classics. Recorded in a single live take within a marble hallway of Bamako's conference centre on in 1997, the album is a landmark album in cementing the legacy and history of the instrument, with Diabete and Sissoko mutually inspired by the 1970 album of the same name, which was in turn released by each of their parents, Sidiki Diabate and Djelimadi Sissoko; many changes reflecting the meandering landscape of Malian music were made, not least the inclusion of flamenco flourishes and esoteric architectural recording techniques.

Their latest in this effort is a breakout wonder in V/A form, herding together three contemporary club titans for a jolly trans-national dialogue over the original stylings of an inimitable key player in proliferation of Bhangra music, Manjeet Kondal. Joao Donato is a renowned Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist who worked with icons like Tom Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Gilberto Gil and his track 'A Ra' appeared on his classic 1973 album Quem e quem, which has since been recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. Uh-Ah Song (3:31)
Otoma Da Naba (4:06)
Review: A hugely exciting and thoroughly danceable new 7" from Florence Adooni, blowing any other artist who could even remotely hope to stake a worthy claim to contemporary highlife out of the park. Following up her debut single 'Fo Yelle' on Philophon, the Ghanaian Frafra Soul singer returns backed by an eight-member troupe, made up of young talents from the highlife scene of Kumasi, Ghana. 'Uh Ah Song' and its inverse counterpart 'Otoma Da Naba' are slick, clean and joyous daytime jaunts, with the former track lyrically meditating on familial and childhood themes while effortlessly pinning down a difficult-to-maintain-for-most uptempo highlife backbeat and improv. The B-side, meanwhile, pays tribute to the supreme terrestrial creator central to Adooni's native Frafra community, and centres on a heptatonic electronic, nigh acid riff and lo-fi texture with a "je ne sais qoui" that, in our view, renders it the tune of the year so far.

Kampire's personal connection to the music, shaped by her upbringing in Ndola, Zambia, adds depth to the compilation. Through her own edit of 'Ririmi Rotsombela' and personal liner notes, she traces her links to the music, creating a nostalgic experience for listeners. The compilation not only celebrates well-known artists but also shines a spotlight on women in African music from the 80s, including legends like Pembey Sheiro, Feza Shamamba, and Princesse Mansia M'bila. It's a testament to the diversity and richness of African music history. With its blend of classic tracks and Kampire's personal touch, A Dancefloor in Ndola is more than just a compilation; it's a cultural journey that highlights the beauty and significance of African musical traditions.

Pensamiento (3:31)
Inot (3:30)
Review: This exciting new double-sided 45 from Vampi Soul features two rare and funky dance floor gems from pioneering Colombian artists of the 70s. On one side, Piper Pimienta, who was an early collaborator with Fruko and member of The Latin Brothers, presents 'Pensamiento'' which is a killer Latin funk track from his 1979 album La Fuente that's never been released on a 45 before. Known for his salsa skills and always vibrant live shows, Pimienta's track is a treat for DJs. The flip side showcases Columna de Fuego, a trailblazing group from 1973 known for blending rock with Pacific and Caribbean rhythms. Their track 'Inot' offers a fast-paced delight from their one and only LP.

Review: Isle of Jura revisits the wonderful 'A Muto' by Esa here with a fresh reissue of it in original form with various remixes. It was originally released in 1986 on the 'Atesa' album and became an instant hit in Cameroon and Africa. The lyrics of tell the story of a woman leaving her husband, frustrated with her isolation as the housekeeper. The song blends Makossa, a brass-heavy style from the French Cameroons, with Ambasse Bey which is a traditional fast-paced dance music from Cameroon. When it was first written, Martin gathered session musicians in Paris and personally programmed the drums and synths using a Linn Drum and Yamaha DX7 to create a unique fusion of modern and traditional Cameroonian sounds.

Review: The Brazil45 series has always been pure gold and now come a pair f beauties from Harmony Cats, a vocal quintet-turned-trio from Sao Paulo known for their disco-era hits. Harmony Cats' 'Theme' from 1976 is their most recognised track outside Brazil and is inspired by Rhythm Heritage's Barretta's Theme with its spacey breakbeats, lush vocals and percussive flair, all of which have made it a true crossover classic. On the B-side, 'Seja Como Nos (De Pe No Chao)' delivers an exuberant Brazilian twist on The Jacksons' 'Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)'- it's a guaranteed floor-filler with radiant disco energy and Harmony Cats' signature vocal style.

Use It Before You Lose It (3:02)
Review: The Fania label dives into Latin and Brazilian funk and jazz here on a special one-sided 7" that offers up Bobby Valentin's dancefloor classic 'Use It Before You Lose It.' This low-key cult classic has become hard to find at an affordable price and is a real favourite with those who know. It is three superb sweet minutes of busy and percussive funk rawness with shuffling samba undertones. The guttural vocals are impossible to genre and the jazzy keys are the icing on a fruity cake.

Review: Rio 18's Radio Chevere is a vibrant, genre-defying musical experience that resists being neatly boxed in. Part mixtape, part radio show, it's a sprawling tribute to Tropical Music, bursting with energy, sincerity, and groove.
Guided by guest DJ Coco Maria, Radio Chevere embarks on a sonic journey across multiple continents. From the samba rhythms of Brazil to Venezuelan salsa and even Californian psychedelic disco, the album becomes a musical metaphor for migrationicelebrating the movement of people, sounds, and stories.Collaboration lies at the heart of this record. Brazilian legends the +2's appear on the soft samba ballad 'Oh Minha Querida', while transatlantic Yacht Rockers Young Gun Silver Fox bring laid-back charm to 'She's In LA'. Silvia Machete from Sao Paulo adds an infectious funk vibe to 'Maybe Man', and Venezuelan icon Luzmira Zerpa delivers rhythmic intensity on 'Padre Tiempo'. The album's linguistic variety is equally impressive, blending Spanish, Portuguese, Welsh, and English into one rich tapestry. Founder Carwyn Ellis, having explored Latin music since Rio 18's 2018 inception, takes a step back from singing on Radio Chevere, focusing instead on songwriting and production. With bold cover art by Colombian artist Yoda, Radio Chevere is a lively and heartfelt celebration of the diverse influences that make up its unique sound.

This one is actually a collaboration with longtime friend and co-producer Oliwa and it has a stunning lead vocal that is full pf passion and heart ache and comes from Colombian-Canadian talent Lido Pimienta. The drums are slow, heavy and cumbia influenced extra bass synths, keys, guitars and drums all making it feel contemporary as well as traditional. Review: This album transports listeners to 1950s and 60s Colombia, where the tropical sounds of the Caribbean and Pacific coasts dominated the mainland music scene. Edmundo Arias, alongside Lucho Bermudez and Pacho Galan, was one of the pivotal figures of this era, yet his introverted nature kept him out of the spotlight, making his contributions less celebrated than his peers. Born in Tulua in 1925, Arias came from a musical family and mastered several instruments. After his father's death in 1948, he and his brother moved to Medellin, the epicenter of Colombia's music industry. Arias quickly established himself as a talented musician, composer, arranger, and band leader for leading labels like Zeida, Ondina, Silver, and Sonolux. Despite his preference for working behind the scenes, Arias' impact was profound, collaborating with numerous musicians and mentoring young artists. His prolific output included hundreds of compositions and numerous albums. This compilation, Guepa Je!, shows the finest of Arias' work from the 50s and 60s, a period often regarded as the pinnacle of his career. Enjoy the vibrant, joyous sounds of Colombia's tropical music heritage.

Review: For the second instalment in their Cuban Classics series, Mr Bongo present this sought-after slice of sublime Afro-Cuban jazz from 1976. It comes courtesy of one of Cuba's most influential acts, Grupo Irakere. Founded in 1973 by Chucho Valdes (son of the Cuban pianist and bandleader Bebo Valdes) the group was home to many of Cuba's finest musicians over the years. With an electrifying style and sound, they mixed traditional Cuban music with jazz, funk, and rock. This self-titled album includes the much-loved, dancefloor heavy-hitter 'Chequere-Son', a Latin-jazz funk masterpiece with Cubanized bebop-flavoured horn lines, lush keys, and 70s hip swagger. Though 'Chequere-Son' is the keystone of the record, the album is laced with brilliance at every turn, from the Carlos Santana-esque channelling 'Iya' with its percussive Latin power, to the sultry, slick and passionate '38 1/2'.

Review: In 1977, Gaye Mody Camara, a young Soninke raised in Mali's Kayes region, settled in France to found his own empire modelled psychically after the great Soninko empire. Initially selling wax, kola nuts and other goods in his Parisian outlets, he rapidly started distributing cassette tapes and eventually producing a multitude of recordings for his own label, Camara Production. Crossing paths and collaborating over the next four decades with legendary artists, griots and industry moguls like Boncana Maiga and Jean-Philippe Rykiel, Camara became one of the great independent music producers of his generation, and a pillar of the Parisian Soninke diaspora. Released in close collaboration with Camara and with the assistance of Daouda N'diaye, one of A.P.S' (Association pour la Promotion de la langue et de la culture Soninke) historical members, this selection of songs and accompanying notes aim to shed a light on an intricate culture and its modern music, unjustifiably unknown outside of West Africa and the various diasporas around the world.

Review: Craft Recordings get back on their curatorially expert business with this serious new reissue from Fania All Stars, the long out-of-print Latin-Soul-Rock. This eight-track gem from the 70s salsa ultragroup (literally; FAS consisted of over 25 members at the height of its fame), released via their own label in 1974, documents the moment at which over 40,000 salsa punters visited New York's Yankee Stadium to catch a glimpse of their talents, alongside a myriad of other Latin greats. Fania All Stars threw a curveball, however, by not only playing pure salsa but blending it with styles like funk and soul, thus sticking out from the crowd and adding a spicier punch. We welcome this record, out via Craft Latino, with alacrity, as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of this 'wow' moment, which deserves to be documented even if solely for its powers of FAS' fusional imagination.

Review: Arakou, situated over 400 km north of Cotonou, housed the Orchestre Anassoua-Jazz de Parakou. Through the 1970s, they recorded several singles and EPs for Albarika and a few others, but never completed a full album.Their 1975 45rpm release is exceptionally rare; no copy has surfaced on eBay, nor is it listed on Discogs. Beyond rarity, 'Bakassine Gabou' offers a highly-charged, hypnotic dance track perfect for DJs, while 'Moumouni Bassina Borou Fo' intensifies with layered guitar, vocals, and percussion. What's more, this version finds both tracks were meticulously transferred, restored, and mastered from the original 1/4 inch tape.

Review: Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics Series now looks to highlight Los Reyes 73 and their sensational 1975 debut LP. This Afro-Cuban-funk gem combines psych rock with deep funk, cementing its status as a 70s Cuban masterpiece and a favourite with those who know. Despite releasing only two albums and a few singles, the band was highly influential in Cuba and gained international recognition through 2000s compilations. Produced by Raul Gomez and featuring Cuban music heavyweights, the album blends traditional Cuban Son with funk and psychedelic elements. The reissue uses the beautiful bird illustration cover art from the Mexican Pentagrama Records release.

Review: A thousand miles away from the beating musical hearts of Rio and Sao Paulo in the late 70s, the Brazilian city of Belem gave rise to a little-known record label called Erla - Estudio Rauland. Though not prolific in its output, the label made up for it in quality and experimental offerings, with several records on the label now becoming sought-after pieces among collectors. One such release is the sublime four-track psych, MPB, and rock EP by singer-songwriter Jarbas Mariz. Though the EP 'Transas Do Futuro' was recorded in 1977, it gained inspiration from the psychedelic hippy idols of the previous decade ,and could easily have been a soundtrack to an acid trip scene in an obscure Brazilian movie. Lo-fi and quirky, there are moments of beauty and splendour but also hints of darkness. At points Jarbas will have you drifting through a folk flute daydream, the next moment a growling, psych-distorted guitar breaks and parts the calm. An ability to make those elements blend cohesively is where Jarbas' true brilliance shines through.

Review: Rail Band are one of the most legendary bands in Malian musical history, and like all great legends their greatest moment was fleeting. This incredibly heavy, soulful and hard-grooving record was released in 1973, when the official orchestra of the Malian State Railway decided to enter the studio and lay down their potent blend of Western funk and surf, Mande tradition and Afro-Cuban percussion. The band was led by trumpet and sax player Tidiani Kone and Djelimady Tounkara on guitar, but in the iteration captured on this album they also featured future stars Salif Keita and Mory Kante on vocals. Shortly after, Keita and Kante eloped to embark on hugely successful solo careers, but for a brief moment in 1973 one of the greatest African guitar bands of all time created a perfect storm of West African storytelling and smoking hot grooves.

It was recorded at Island Studios London then mixed in L.A. during a golden period for the Motown studios. That quality shines through on the record, not least thanks to the appearance throughout of the 'mean machine' which was an alias of legendary Motown artists The Commodores' brass section. An original of this will cost you well over 500 quid so do not sleep on this quality reissue from BBE as it is a brilliant bit of Afro-funk for those who know.

Surfacing after Mr. Bongo were met with a string of requests to reissue the album not long after its original release in 2019, we're once more compelled to consider the album's merits and what makes the enjoyment of it tick. More of an establishment of style and talent than an exploration of a concept, the album is noted for its fusion of chamber pop, rock and samba, across a vintage palette that defies any overarching categorisation.

Review: Amadou & Mariam, the legendary Malian duo, celebrate their nearly 50-year career with La Vie Est Belle, a new album that blends their greatest hits since 1998 with fresh tracks. The album showcases the duo's profound impact on the global music scene, highlighting their pioneering role in Afro-pop. Among the album's highlights is the brand-new single 'Beaux Dimanches' (Ever Mihigo Rework), which sounds like their vintage work. The album also includes 'Mogolu,' a Manu Chao-composed track that effortlessly fuses Afro-beat rhythms with modern electronic elements, a reflection of Amadou & Mariam's enduring ability to innovate. Amadou & Mariam's influence spans far beyond their roots, having collaborated with major artists like U2, Coldplay, and Stevie Wonder. Their musical journey began at the Bamako Institute for Young Blind People in the 1970s, and they quickly won over audiences across West Africa before gaining international recognition in the late 90s. La Vie Est Belle revisits iconic tracks like 'Je Pense A Toi,' 'Sabali,' and 'Bofou Safou,' along with collaborations from Dimanche a Bamako and Welcome to Mali, featuring artists like Damon Albarn and K'Naan. The album also explores their more recent works, including tracks from La Confusion and collaborations with contemporary artists like BLOND. With La Vie Est Belle, Amadou & Mariam reaffirm their status as global music icons, continuing to blend traditional Malian sounds with modern influences, all while spreading messages of peace, love and unity through their music.

It was recorded during the pandemic and is a treasure trove of distinctive Afro-Cuban musical traditions, highly percussive sounds, brass-based rhythms and simmering melodies. Heavenly has now put together a mix of special remixes for this limited edition 12". Review: A Colourful Storm's vinyl release of Eddie Marcon's Yahho no Potori is a shinning example to the enduring allure of the Japanese folk outfit's intimate soundscapes. Comprising the core duo of Eddie Corman and Jules Marcon, the album marks a poignant evolution from their earlier works, weaving delicate acoustic textures with traditional song structures. Recorded during a humid summer and autumn, Yahho no Potori captures the essence of tenderness and wistfulness, buoyed by Corman's evocative vocals and Marcon's stylish guitar strumming. The ensemble cast, including Yashuhisa Mizatani and Saya Ueno, imbues the album with a collaborative spirit reminiscent of Japanese collectives like Tenniscoats and Maher Shalal Hash Baz. At its heart lies 'Toratolion', a hauntingly beautiful track that features Corman's emotive vocals, a standout moment on both the album and in Eddie Marcon's live repertoire. A Colourful Storm honors this underappreciated gem with remastered audio, faithful artwork and a Japanese lyric sheet, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the ethereal beauty of Eddie Marcon's musical world. This album is sure to make indie charts and best of lists for 2024!

With plenty of pulsing drum machine beats and dazzlingly infectious melodies, Suntaxi blends elements of salsa, merengue, and cumbia to create a truly dynamite dancefloor anthem. The track cannot fail to transport you to the lively streets of San Juan where the music fills the air during festive celebrations. 'Que Siga La Farra' on the flip has more of a dub feel but is still pack with vivid and vibrant melody that is a testament to Suntaxi's talent for infusing contemporary flair into classic Latin sounds and will ensure a lively atmosphere wherever it's played.

Review: Chain of Light, a newly uncovered gem from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, showcases his raw vocal power and mastery of the Sufi qawwali tradition. Recorded in 1990, just before his groundbreaking fusion album Mustt Mustt, this album captures Khan in his prime, performing four traditional qawwalis that had remained hidden for decades. The album opens with 'Ya Allah Ya Rehman', where Khan's vibrato-rich vocals ride a driving tabla and harmonium melody, exuding a deep sense of yearning. His party of singers provides harmonic support, amplifying the piece's emotional intensity. The second track, 'Aaj Sik Mitran Di', moves with more freedom in tempo, highlighting Khan's exceptional ability to weave his voice through slow melodies and then accelerate into breathtaking, rapid-fire sargam passages. 'Ya Gaus Ya Meeran', takes you on a spiritual journey. Unpredictable tempo changes and shifting rhythms leave Khan's voice as the constant force, building to a powerful crescendo. Far from a mere archival release, Chain of Light reinforces Khan's legacy as a qawwali genius at the height of his artistry.

Collaborating with Cuban artist Kiko Ruiz, who is known for his work with Buena Vista Social Club, the album intertwines everyday Cuban narratives with Palo Mayombe spirituality that adds layers of depth. Review: Brazilian composer, arranger, singer and multi instrumentalist Marcos Valle presents his stonking 23rd full-length studio album, Tunel Acustico, which aims to "bring it all together". "It" likely referring to the meandering, turbulent life and thus variegated stylistic trajectory he's enjoyed since 1962, Valle goes on to comment, quite rightly of a musician so seasoned, that: "I believe my music is many things. It goes in different directions. I have many different ways of writing music, sometimes it's melodies and harmony, sometimes the groove is the focus. But all the music I have made over my sixty year career is unified. It is all natural and it is all sincere." The idea that a particular artist's chronology might beteem many doorways into which we might explore isolated snapshots of the past - yet these are ultimately all unified under the same structure - is not new. Yet Tunel Acustico is one of those rare records that was made with this express idea, of bridging multiplicity and singularity in mind, and the result is palpable, channelling every memory, occupancy and stylistic shift undergone by the artist into a single, yet still enjoyable and identifiable, jazz-funk and psychedelic sandstorm.

Palavras Tao Gentis/Tem Que Ser Feliz (6:05)
Review: Marcos Valle's 23rd studio album, Tunel Acustico, is a sweeping blend of the Brazilian legend's six-decade career, from his iconic bossa nova beginnings to jazz-funk and LA disco. Valle, who has worked with names like Sergio Mendes and Leon Ware, pulls together past and present on this release. With two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth on board, the rhythm section sets a lively foundation for Valle's soulful melodies. Highlights include 'Feels So Good,' a groovy 1979 collaboration with Leon Ware, freshly updated with AI stem-separation and new Portuguese lyrics, and 'Life Is What It Is,' a disco-infused track co-written with Chicago's Laudir De Oliveira. Guest lyricists such as Ceu and Moreno Veloso add a contemporary flair, while the closing track, 'Thank You Burt (For Bacharach),' pays homage to the legendary composer. With its dynamic mix of samba, soul, and timeless grooves, Tunel Acustico is another standout in Valle's storied career.

Review: Number 80 in Mr. Bongo's Brazil.45 series shines a spotlight on two iconic 80s tracks by Brazilian legend Jorge Ben. The A-side features the infectious groove of 'Curumin Chama Cunhata Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De indio)' from the 1981 Dadiva album and paying tribute to Brazil's Indigenous tribes. On the flip, 'Rio Babilonia' delivers a classic Brazilian-boogie vibe that celebrates life in Rio, its beaches and landmarks. Originally released in 1983, the track showcases arrangements by the legendary Lincoln Olivetti.

Las Pinas (3:25)
Playa Boogaloo (3:32)
Review: Hailing from Berlin, Los Baby Jaguars craft vibrant musical journeys that span cumbia, Latin funk and on to Afrobeat. They themselves call their unique sonic cocktail a "tropical rocket" ride through the decades from the 60s to the present and we do not argue with that. Their debut 45 is a double header here, 'Las PiNas' and 'Playa Boogaloo,' released by Nu-Tone with some superb artwork. The music collides cumbia and Afrobeat on a cosmic dance floor amongst the stars and brings an all new kind of energy to international dub.

Review: 9T Antiope's Horror Vacui intersects where the eerie tale of a mysterious house mirrors the complexities of human existence lie. Nima Aghiani and Sara Bigdeli Shamloo masterfully blend elements of Iranian heritage with contemporary sonic exploration, delving into themes of identity, displacement and the relentless passage of time. Through sparse instrumentation and haunting vocals, the duo navigates the liminal spaces between past and present, old and new, creating an atmospheric soundscape that is both unsettling and captivating. The title track, with its subtle shifts in language and texture, encapsulates the album's exploration of memory and the fear of forgetting. Horror Vacui is an album that defies easy categorisation, balancing on the precipice between structure and formlessness, heaviness and softness. It challenges listeners to confront their own fears and uncertainties, urging them to embrace the space between dualities. In doing so, it offers a profound meditation on the nature of existence itself, leaving a lasting impact on the listener's psyche and memory.

Review: Nu-tone introduces the debut single from Lulada Club here - a superb New York City based all-women salsa orchestra headed up by band co-leader Andrea Chavarro. After two years of live performances, they're finally sharing their music for everyone to dance to and dance you will to these most intoxicating mixes of funk, cumbria, salsa and more. It was recorded live and all-analog at NY Hed Studio by producer Rocio Verta-Wray, and the single comes on random-colour vinyl. Lulada Club emerged in 2022 to fill the gap for women ensembles in NYC's live music scene and co-leader Katherine Ocampo has said their aim is to "provide access to live music, culture, community, and representation for women in music festivals and other spaces."

Review: These two vinyl records house the vibrant legacy of the boogaloo movement in Peru from 1966 to 1975, showcasing 22 tracks by 17 different artists who recorded on the renowned Peruvian label MAG. Featuring standout songs by Tito Chicoma, Melcochita, Los Kintos, Otto Rojas, and Coco Lagos, among others, the collection invites a new generation to dance to these timeless grooves. While MAG was known for releasing various music styles, its focus on tropical sounds has become a favorite for DJs and collectors. The mid-60s saw Peru develop a thriving boogaloo scene, inspired by the genre's New York origins where songs like 'Bang Bang' and 'El Pito' blended Latin rhythms with soul and funk. Although boogaloo's popularity waned in New York toward the end of the 60s, it continued to thrive in Peru even as salsa music eventually took over. With this compilation, the energy of that era comes alive again, highlighting the lasting influence of boogaloo on Peruvian music and inviting listeners to rediscover these lost dancefloor gems.

Review: The second part of Susobrino's album continues his playful exploration of Latin and Cumbia rhythms, pushing the boundaries of traditional sounds while paying tribute to their roots. 'El Destino' opens with a burst of vibrant energy, where Monterrey's La Gallo 3:20's bold vocals ride over layers of quirky beats, creating a track that's as much a celebration as it is experimental. 'CUMBIA GORDA' brings a salsa flair, full of lively trumpet arrangements, while 'CUMBIA RICO' shifts into a more danceable mode, echoing the festive atmosphere of a Brazilian carnival. Review: Seun Kuti has released his highly anticipated album Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) via Record Kicks to great excitement. This album, executive produced by Lenny Kravitz and featuring Fela Kuti's original engineer Sodi Marciszewer, marks a significant milestone in Kuti's career. Following his Grammy-nominated album Black Times, this release showcases his evolution as both an artist and activist. The album features six powerful tracks, each embodying themes of resistance, resilience, and revolution. The track 'Dey,' featuring Damian Marley, emphasises self-empowerment, while 'Emi Aluta' pays homage to revolutionaries, featuring the innovative Sampa The Great. 'T.O.P.' critiques societal values, promoting empathy and a connection to nature. 'Love and Revolution' highlights Kuti's belief in love as a catalyst for change. Kuti expressed gratitude for Kravitz's brotherly support and Sodi's guidance during the production process. He continues to uphold the legacy of his father, Fela Kuti, using his music to inspire social change. This album promises to redefine contemporary Afrobeat while staying true to its roots. Review: Strut's definitive vinyl edition of Nigeria 70 brings fresh vitality to a landmark compilation first released in 2001. This collection, renowned for its role in popularizing 1970s Lagos music, remains a vital exploration of Afro funk and Afro jazz, showcasing a vibrant cross-section of Nigerian music that extends beyond Fela Kuti's legacy. The reissue offers a rich tapestry of sounds that captured Nigeria's dynamic musical landscape. Starting with Monomono's 'Loma Da Nigbehin,' the album dives into deep, rhythmically complex Afrobeat grooves. Fela Kuti's iconic tracks 'Upside Down' and 'Jeun Ko Ku (Chop 'n' Quench)' highlight the revolutionary funk that defined the era, while Tony Allen's 'No Discrimination' from 1980 exemplifies the genre's evolving sophistication. The compilation's strength lies in its diversity. Tracks like Ofo & the Black Company's 'Allah Wakbarr' and BLO's 'Chant to Mother Earth' introduce psychedelic rock influences, while Joni Haastrup's 'Greetings' and Shina Williams & His African Percussionists' 'Agboju Logun' infuse disco and electro-funk elements into the Afrobeat foundation. William Onyeabor's 'Better Change Your Mind' offers a glimpse into how Nigerian artists engaged with global funk and synthesiser sounds. Nigeria 70 is a great example to the innovative spirit of Nigerian music in the 1970s, reflecting a rich interplay of local and global influences.

Review: The Bongo Hop's new album 'La Pata Coja' is a brass and percussion infused Coimbra/Afrobeat/Carib adventure where the pace of its rhythms reflects a sweetly limping groove. Particularly found in its title track, this echoes the translation of its title 'La Pata Coja', where laid backness conjures up a sometimes up sometimes down bounce, as a tonic to what life hurls at you and why a loved up bit of dancing can cure all. The Bongo Hop is French trumpeter Etienne Sevet's project with Colombian friends, vocalist Nidia Gongora (the voice of Ondatropica and Quantic), rapper Maikcel (Zalama crew) and also notable producer Patchworks, on Maxime Peron and Laurent Loudier's Underdog Records, who this year celebrate 20 years of supporting the melting pot that is France's rich musical heritage. Silky seductive vocals bring the brass together and Paul Charnay's lovely keys and break outs underlay and interject into the repetitive refrains of Boris Pakora and Oliver Granger's saxophones whilst Mario Vargas maintains a super syncopated percussive rhythm section on pretty much every track. If you love an easy funkiness you'll adore 'Dekonekte' or if you prefer a nice slowed down high life guitar rhythm 'Magica Bonita' is for you, add that to an infectious uptempo and downbeat West African grooviness and you won't be disappointed, making it a must-have.

Freitas's polyrhythmic piano playing, described as a fusion of lacy delicacy and propulsive thumping, takes center stage, displaying his remarkable ability to blend diverse influences seamlessly. Tracks like 'Uira (Encantada da Agua) - Vida e cura' feature prepared pianos and intricate basslines reminiscent of Ethio-jazz, pushing the boundaries of traditional jazz into avant-garde territory. In the album's second half, Freitas engages in dynamic collaborations with guests like Jeff Parker and Brandee Younger, adding layers of texture and depth to his compositions. "Y'Y" represents a bold exploration of cultural fusion and experimentation, solidifying Freitas's position as a visionary pianist and composer in the contemporary jazz landscape.

Review: Ravi Shankar is often cited as one of the most famous and influential sitar players in the world and none of his albums do quite as much justice to that claim than Shankar Family & Friends, first released in 1974. Unlike many of his former albums, this LP places a front-and-centre focus on Shankar's family members, with whom he collaborates throughout the album. Though, that's not to say it doesn't also come with commercial draws - indeed, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston and Tom Scott also make cameo appearances. For all its humble harkenings-back to familial source, Shankar does not hesitate to fuse his own ancestral Indian classical music with the Western pop and jazz elements of his friends. The likes of 'I Am Missing You' and 'Jaya Jagadish Hare' are nonetheless utter dreamscapes, and thanks to this reissue via the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab series, this version comes as the highest-quality version of the record yet.

Review: Satellites' self-titled debut album, released on Batov Records, is a dynamic addition to the Anatolian Rock scene. This Haifa-based band, led by Itamar Kluger, deftly balances tradition and innovation. With their mastery of the saz and baglama, they infuse vibrant electric beats with swooning melodies, prog rock intricacies, and disco flair. The album's highlight, 'Seni Sen Oldugun Icin Sevdim,' is a tradeark example at Satellites' adventurous spirit, blending full-throttle jazz rock with psychedelic interludes. Their reinterpretation of the traditional 'Yagmur Yagar Tas Ustune' merges dark folk with alt-rock, featuring Yuli Shafriri's ethereal vocals. Satellites' enthusiastic approach breathes new life into classics like Zafer Dilek's 'Yekte' and Kamuran Akkor's 'Olurmu Desin.' The former revels in distortion with robust synths, while the latter's skanking guitar and harmonies add urgency to the ballad. Instrumentals like 'Big Baglama' set the tone with twanging saz and disco rhythms, while tracks like 'Yar Oi' and 'Disco Arabesque' offer buoyant, danceable beats. The closing song, 'Cecom,' is a gentle, soothing coda that hints at future explorations. With their inventive blend of genres, Satellites promise an intriguing musical journey ahead.

Review: Spain's Zanja Records is a new label dedicated to the promotion of Cuban music and culture. Its inaugural EP The Zanja All Stars: Cuban Jam Session Vol 1 features singers El Indio, Maria Victoria, El Nene, and Ondy, under the musical direction of Julito Padron. All are top Cuban talents who perform "Descargas, Montunos, Instrumental Jazz, and Son" with authenticity and great charm. These percussive, shuffling grooves are alive with wandering basslines and expressive vocals that take you to the heart of the country in an instant. Big horns and jazzy keys, orchestral grandeur and street-wise realness all make them brilliantly irresistible.

Review: Since 2017, KOKOKO! has been trailblazing Kinshasa's sonic revolution while earning global acclaim for their unique sound and vibrant performances. Recognised as the best live band by AIF, they've been featured on NPR Tiny Desk, Boiler Room, and major festivals like SXSW and Pitchfork. Their debut album, Fongola, received rave reviews, and now they are back with another album that is unlike much else you will have heard. BUTU, which is inspired by Kinshasa's vibrant nightlife, has been proceeded by the lead single 'Mokili.' The album has further cues taken from Kinshasa, Kwaito, and '90s dance music and channels the band's hometown's frenetic energy with a sense of social activism into a powerful statement.

Review: The Spanish word "reventar" means to burst, and Hector Lavoe did just that on the salsa scene with his 1985 album Revento. Known as "El Cantante de los Cantantes" (or 'The Singer of All Singers'), Lavoe had been making waves since his 1967 debut with Willie Colon on 'El Malo.' Revento, which came following the success his 1983 album Vigilante, was Lavoe's striking response to salsa's decline in the face of merengue and romantic ballads. He returned to Colon's trombone sound and collaborated with old friends like Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual and the album, which is packed with diverse rhythms and evocative themes, cemented Lavoe's reputation as one of salsa's most versatile and multifaceted artists as well as extending his influence across the Americas.

Review: Always keen to break new ground, Strut's latest compilation comes not from a well-known European or American crate-digger, but rather Kenyan-born, Uganda-based DJ Kampire. A Dancefloor in Ndola sees her look back to her time growing up in Zambia and specifically the music she heard and loved during these formative years. It's a great idea, executed brilliantly, with Kampire showcasing an enticing and highly entertaining mix of East and South African music from the 70s and 80s, including Congolese rumba and soukous, bubblegum, and kalindula, a guitar-led style native to Zambia. It's a joyous an eye-opening collection all told and notable for - aside from the high quality throughout - Kampire's decision to showcase a high number of tracks from legendary and little-known female artists. A genuinely essential collection all told.

Review: South African Madala Kunene, known as Bafo, blends Zulu folk with township blues to create his unique and so-called 'Madala-line' music. His songs are inspired by dreams, ancestral messages, and Zulu folklore, and often incorporate traditional songs, nursery rhymes and lullabies. Musicologists study and teach his work, and in May 2023, he received an honorary Doctor of Music degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal for his contributions to indigenous and African music. Kunene started buskin aged just seven with a homemade guitar and was discovered by bassist Sipho Gumede. His debut album, released in 1990, now gets its first-ever vinyl reissue courtesy of Bella Union.

Review: Les Belgicains - Na Tango Ya Covadia 1964-1970 sheds light on the pioneering Congolese student orchestras in Belgium during the Covadia era. Congolese students, referred to as 'Les Belgicains,' brought a fresh breeze to Congolese popular music. Supervised by legendary editor and producer Nikiforos Cavvadias, the music resonated with the spirit of early African independence. Homesick students formed music groups, infusing their compositions with Belgian influences, creating a unique sound. Cavvadias, renowned in Congo, relocated to Belgium due to political unrest. He recognized the talent of groups like Los Nickelos and Yeye National, ushering them into his new label Covadia.

Review: The third and most especial edition in the latest selection of versions of the reissued LP by Alonso Toro, Paul Desenne, and Pedro Vasquez - Alzheimer. Coming hot on the heels of an original, as-it-was reissue as well as a gemmy Ricardo Villalobos rerub, this deluxe edition comes in a beautiful yellow and lilac LP box, and features the latter's two remixes as well as an exclusive Wetsuit Je Me Souviens version. A curio of the Venezuelan vanguard, the album was recorded between January 1997-99, and hears the fabled trio of musicians "forget everything" that came before, enlisting the recorded help of every member of the animal kingdom - from mammals to insects - and shooting squarely for a whole new sound-world-order in the process. Sonically flowing between heritage Latin music and minimal electronica, the purpose is to confuse and the effect is indeed confounding, though no less dazzling.

Review: There are a bunch of reissues of classic Fela Kuti albums dropping right now which is always going to be good news for collectors and Afrobeat lovers a like. As was often the case with his music, this album Kalakuta Show from 1976 was a way of him taking revenge on the military regime that attacked and brutalized him two years prior when the police mounted a large scale raid on Kalakuta Republic incoming Fela's own heavily guarded compound. They were the second raids in eight months and left Fela with scalp wounds and a broken arm, and us with this most remarkable musical retort.

Review: Music for Shape-Shifters: Field Recordings from the Amazonian Lowlands, 1981-1985 offers an extraordinary glimpse into the rich musical heritage of the Wakuenai (Curripaco) people. These recordings, left behind by anthropologist Jonathan Hill, are an incredible 12 hours of diverse local genres, including sacred chants, spirit languages and the excellent sounds of trumpet and flute ensembles. Captured during all-night sessions, canoe paddling on the river and deep within the forests, these tapes serve as vital artifacts of indigenous ethnomusicology, illustrating the deep connection between sound and the animistic beliefs of Wakuenai society. Listeners will encounter the enchanting range of Wakuenai wind ensembles, from the deep bass drones of handmade trumpets to the piercing dissonance of flutes. The music often embodies rhythmic and melodic patterns that evoke the natural worldirepresenting jaguars, spawning fish and the calls of various spirits and animals. At times, these instruments unite in cacophonous displays, evoking the primordial chaos of creation. Presented here for the first time, these recordings not only honor the cultural legacy of the Wakuenai but also celebrate the cosmic sound that they believe opened the world. Produced by Radio Is A Foreign Country, this collection is essential for anyone interested in the profound relationship between music and culture.

Centred around the marimba, the music incorporates call-and-response chants, Andean guitar finger styles and the haunting sounds of panpipes to make for a deeply immersive experience. Tracks like 'Agua Largo' and 'Kasilla Shungulla' embody the spirit of cultural resistance, identity and healing and make for a brilliantly escapist listen. Review: Celia & Johnny, released in 1974 on Fania Records, marked a pivotal moment for both Celia Cruz and salsa music. By this point, Cruz was already a celebrated star in Cuba, but her attempts to break into the U.S. salsa scene had struggled. Enter Johnny Pacheco, co-founder of Fania Records and leader of the Fania All-Stars. A longtime admirer of Celia's powerful contralto voice, Pacheco believed her potential had been stifled by overly complex arrangements. He was confident that pairing her voice with his more streamlined Afro-Caribbean rhythms would catapult her into salsa stardomiand he was right. The album produced two defining hits, 'Toro Mata' and 'Quimbara', both of which immediately resonated with dancers and salsa enthusiasts. The infectious grooves provided by Pacheco's band allowed Celia's voice to shine, and the success of these tracks solidified her status as the Queen of Salsa. Celia & Johnny is now seen as a cornerstone of salsa's golden age. The record's blend of traditional Cuban styles like mambo, guaracha, and guaguanco with the modern salsa sound brought the genre to a wider audience, particularly younger U.S.-born Latinos. Deep cuts like 'Tengo El Idde', 'Lo Tuyo Es Mental', and 'Canto a La Habana' further showcase Cruz's versatility, with moving performances that tap into spiritual, comedic and patriotic themes. Ultimately, Celia & Johnny remains a landmark collaboration that helped define the global appeal of salsa.

Review: Alzheimer, the record, is a stranger everywhere on earth - that is to say, wherever you might be listening to it, it will always sound like it's from somewhere else. The product of a foreign culture, for even though it was created and recorded in Caracas, Venezuela between January 1997 and 9/9/99, it's the result of forgetting everything and recomposing a new Sound World from the faintest, blurriest recollections of musical culture. Its purpose is confusion, its uniqueness is creating it in the realm of Music; a clash of instruments and minds. Everything you hear on the record was performed by humans and insects, spoken and sung by living beings, roughly a decade before the smartphone. The Alzheimer ensemble still exists and fully supports this initiative of celebrating the 24th year of its first of two published albums on vinyl. The spirit of our group will never be captured by robotic 'intelligence'.

Through eras of the oil boom and Soviet rule, the electric guitar has become a powerful symbol of cultural expression and Rahman Memmedli is a legendary figure who revolutionised this sound with innovative techniques and impassioned performances. Drawing inspiration from mugham music, Memmeddli's compositions resonate with soul-stirring melodies and electrifying solos and Azerbaijani Gitara Vol. 2 promises to impress listeners with its depth, diversity and unbridled passion, taking you on a journey through the heart and soul of Azerbaijan's musical heritage.

Review: Yemenite music in Israel is a uniquely Middle-Eastern style born from the immigration of Yemenite Jews to Israel. Initially religious and ceremonial, the music featured separate male and female songs accompanied by drumming on olive oil tin cans. Aharon Amram, born in Sana'a, Yemen, immigrated to Israel as a child and became a central figure in this genre. From the 1960s onward, he released numerous records on Sounds of Yemen in which he blended traditional religious songs with his own secular compositions, Western electric instruments and modern arrangements. This double LP showcases Amram's diverse catalogue and undying influence on contemporary Mizrahi.

Review: El Grupo Renacimiento, the brainchild of Colombia's Meridian Brothers, offers a fantastical journey into a surreal world where salsa meets Kafkaesque transformations. Led by the versatile musician Eblis Alvarez, Meridian Brothers have long blurred the lines between avant-garde experimentation and traditional Latin rhythms, including Colombia's cumbia. With El Grupo Renacimiento, Alvarez and his collaborators craft a whimsical playlist that touches on themes ranging from anti-police protest to addiction and broken love, each track infused with a surreal twist and paying homage to salsa's diverse subgenres. Songs like 'Triste Son' parody Cuban son with a cha-cha beat, while 'Poema del Salsero Resentido' forewarns of a rhythmic apocalypse. 'Metamorfosis' explores the theme of transhumanism with percussive intensity. Despite the album's tongue-in-cheek approach reminiscent of Latin Spinal Tap, the music remains tightly woven and playful. Released on the revived Ansonia label, marking its first new release in three decades, El Grupo Renacimiento is a delightful fusion of creativity and nostalgia, pushing musical boundaries while paying homage to salsa's rich heritage.

Review: A pivotal figure in the early 1970s MPB scene, Salvador was not only a highly regarded sessionist and composer but also a band leader. His 1971 album is a vibrant mix of bossa nova, samba, funk, and carioca styles, infused with raw energy. Original copies of this influential fourth album often fetch around $200 due to its eclectic range. From the lively opener 'Uma Vida' to the Beatles-esque narrative of 'O Rio' and the orchestral boogaloo of 'Number One', the album showcases Salvador at the height of his fusionist creativity and musical prowess.

Review: Malik Adouane is a singer who emerged as part of the so-called rai scene but after finding great success decided to evolve his sound and come up with a concept he called "after rai" which mixed up the traditional sounds of Arabic melodies with his own fresh and future-facing visions that you might consider to be 'Arabeat'. The album lays bare his musical vision and includes a highlight in the form of his superb cover of Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' which cannot fail to get you dancing. This great fusion of Middle Eastern sounds with modern electronic beats is a beguiling one that will get you up and moving in no time.

Review: El Tic Tac by the Cuarteto Yemaya quartet is a cult, expensive and hard to find treasure form Latin America. It was the band's second album back in 1971 and offers up a great set of Peruvian tunes with a Cuban flavour and irresistibly sunny feels. Pancho Acosta's electric guitar denies much of the record and is backed up with conga and timbales. This is the first time it has ever been reissued and has been remastered from the original tapes for the occasion. Do not sleep on this classic.

Alagbon Close
I No Get Eye For Back
Review: Fela Kuti's Alagbon Close, released in 1974, stands as one of his most powerful Afrobeat statements, criticising police brutality in Nigeria. The title track was inspired by two raids on Fela's home, where police searched for marijuana. After swallowing a planted joint, Fela was detained at Alagbon Close, the headquarters of Nigeria's Criminal Investigation Department, for three days while police waited for evidence. His cellmates, in what became known as the Kalakuta Republic, helped Fela escape prosecution. Fela's lyrics denounce the arrogance of the police, declaring that wearing a uniform doesn't place one above the law. The album also marked the beginning of his collaboration with artist Ghariokwu Lemi, whose iconic cover art became synonymous with Afrobeat. Recorded at the A.R.C. Studios, the album is fueled by tight polyrhythms and fiery organ and horn sections, with Fela's sharp political commentary at the forefront. On Side-2, 'I No Get Eye For Back', offers a more groove-driven, mostly instrumental track, showing the collective talents of Africa 70. Together, these tracks solidify Alagbon Close as a timeless work of rebellion and musical innovation.

Review: Brooklyn-born, New Orleans-based multi-instrumentalist Gitkin delivers a rich fusion of global sounds on Golden Age, his latest ten-track album. Known for his guitar-driven style, Gitkin blends the rhythms of cumbia, North African, and Middle Eastern music, creating a sonic journey that feels both expansive and deeply rooted. As the frontman of The Pimps of Joytime, a staple in the festival circuit, his influence on the soul-funk scene is undeniable. From Bonnaroo to Electric Forest, Gitkin has built a reputation for electrifying live performances. Beyond his own projects, he's produced for artists like Corey Henry, Bernard Purdie and Cedric Burnside, whose Benton County Relic earned a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album. With Golden Age, Gitkin further explores the intersections of global music traditions, weaving his soulful guitar into a captivating tapestry that speaks to his wide-ranging influences.

Raag Kirwani (part 1) (19:07)
Raag Kirwani (part 2) (22:36)
Review: Over the course of fifty years, Kamalesh Maitra devoted himself to the art of tabla playing - specifically playing the tabla tarang, a set of between ten and sixteen hand drums tuned to the notes of a drone and scalic backing. Here on Black Truffle comes 'Raag Kirwani On Tabla Tarang', a quelling new record detailing one of several newly unearthed archival recordings of this late great purveyor of the Indian classical music tradition. Across just two movements in one raga, Kirwani demonstrates an adroit playstyle, slickly promulgating an illusorily multi-armed sound; it's almost unbelievable at points as to how he achieves his various unisons and flams, with several pinpointable moments sounding as if at least three drums are being struck at once. Seated behind a semi-circular array of drums, Maitra produces stunning waves of melodic improvisation enlivened with the rhythmic invention of a master percussionist.

Review: Aziza Brahim's fantastic new album Mawja is a blend of Sahrawi roots music, folk, and contemporary sounds that reflect on the resilience and spirit of her homeland. Through haunting vocals and poetic lyrics, Brahim shares stories of displacement, longing, and hope, drawing from her experiences as a Sahrawi refugee. Backed by hypnotic rhythms, intricate melodies, and soul-stirring instrumentation, each track creates a rich tapestry of sound which means the record is more than just an album; it's a powerful testament to the human spirit and a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice. Brahim's music resonates deeply, transcending borders and connecting hearts across the globe.

Review: Ansonia Records' new, comprehensive Salsa Con Estilo: Dance Floor Gems from the Vaults: 1950s-1980s is a vibrant compilation, tracing the musical journey of salsa through the iconic NYC-based Latin label Ansonia Records via its founder, Rafael "Ralph" Perez. Perez is said to have played a trailblazing role in the proliferation of Salsa music throughout the US from the 1950s to the 1970s, proving the fact that trends often don't just happen but are often rather likely to catch on due to the influence of notable individuals. These tracks boast danceable rhythms, vibrant brass, and the unmistakable influence of Afro-Cuban genres like son, guaguanco, and son montuno. The compilation carefully highlights key elements such as the coro, montuno, moNa, and cierre, providing a rich historical perspective on the roots of salsa.

Review: Rubel's As Palavras, Vol. 1 & 2 emerges as a transformative force in the MPB genre, blending contemporary flair with Brazil's rich musical heritage. With 20 tracks spanning traditional styles like forro and samba to modern baile funk and hip-hop, the album exudes freedom and creativity. Collaborations with esteemed artists like Liniker and Luedji Luna weave themes of love, heartbreak, and discovery with reflections on violence, passion, and irony. From the grand choral opener 'Forro Violento' to the funk-infused brilliance of 'Nao Vou Reclamar de Deus,' Rubel's storytelling prowess shines. Tracks like 'Torto Arado' and 'Na Mao do Palhaco' delve into societal issues with depth and satire, while intimate moments with Bala Desejo and Milton Nascimento add depth. As Palavras, Vol. 1 & 2 is a celebration of unity, bridging genres and generations with rhythms and words that define Brazil's cultural landscape.

Review: Estonian label RR Gems continues to fly the flag for the finest experimental jazz music, introducing the world to the sound of EEG Coherence. Recorded at the legendary Hotel 2 Tango studios in Montreal, their debut album is a flowing, engrossing affair which flirts with free jazz forms while keeping a certain smoky, groove-minded vibe at the centre of the rhythm section. It lopes and slopes, letting prominent guitar work needle its way around looming basslines and splashy, spaced-out drums with splashes of vocals, flutes, sax and keys darting about in the mix for good measure. If you value free jazz you can latch onto, this album is a must-check.

Review: This timely reissue of Zamrock's Afro-prog-psychedelic masterpiece makes its debut on vibrant yellow vinyl. WITCH was a group influenced by James Brown, the Stones, and Deep Purple and they dominated 70s Zamrock stages in their heyday. Their musical journey spanned only five years and culminated in the fifth and final rock album, which predated a split and a new disco venture in Zimbabwe. The record fuses traditional Zambian rhythms and folk melodies with progressive rock and, somewhat echoing Lukombo Vibes, it embodies the Osibas' "afro-rock" style. This release encapsulates WITCH's evolution and influence and gives a vivid glimpse into the era's musical fusion and cultural resonance.

Review: Earthtones land on Wonderwheel here with their first full-length album. The title encapsulates a message of unity and hope for humanity and aims to emphasise our interconnectedness and the universal bond of love. Rooted in Folkloric Futurism, Earthtones merges global folk traditions with modern technology inspired by pioneers like Mr. Fingers and Kevin Saunderson. Analog synthesisers, vintage drum machines, and folk vocals create a truly unique sound that celebrates the past and the future, spirituality, feminism, and peace. Highlights include '??sanyin' featuring Maikel Alberto Salazar and 'La Mujer Serpiente' with Lido Pimienta.

Review: Discos Elgozo's second single featuring Las Raras Del Folclor, a queer feminist musical project from the Colombian Caribbean, draws on the decolonising power of cumbia and drums to heal and challenge patriarchal structures. Originating from the LBT Raras no tan Raras Corporation which was founded in 2019 for LGBT Pride Day in Barranquilla, Colombia, Las Raras Del Folclor blends feminist, queer, and Caribbean influences. As such their music is a bold political statement with lyrics celebrating sexual and gender diversity. The first track, 'La Denuncia,' channels ancestral strength against patriarchy, while the second, 'La Pajarera,' highlights community support and care.

Review: With more than a little help from curator, researcher and DJ Tom B, Bongo Joe takes a second deep dive into the intoxicating and frequently under-explored back catalogue of Africa Negra, a band that since the 1970s has been one of central African nation Sao Tome and Principe's premier musical exports. Their style - a blend of Puxa and Rumba heavy on sparkling guitar riffs, addictive percussion, lilting lead vocals and deep, warm bass - is undeniably enticing. Tom B, who has also provided extensive liner notes and dug up some fantastic photos, has done a good job in selecting little-known and previously unreleased tracks, including cuts salvaged from 1979 and 1990 session tapes - all of which have been given a superb re-mastering makeover.

Review: Zani Diabate's Super Djata Band was a leading Malian orchestra in the 1980s. They were known for blending Wasulu hunter music, griot praises, Senufo dances and Fula and Mandingo repertoire with Western psychedelia, blues, and Afrobeat into their own unique forms. In 1982 their album cemented Diabate's place among legendary West African guitarists as he mesmerised listeners with eight vibrant compositions featuring plenty of his hypnotic guitar work. Now it gets reissued on Numero Group and the record solidifies his status as a mythic figure in West African music so for anyone with an appreciation of house styles it is a must.

Review: Cuban-born Modesto Dura was a disciple of mambo innovator Perez Prado but also played his own crucial role in Latin dance music's mid-century evolution. His distinctive percussion work features on numerous 1950s hits including tracks by Esquivel, Belafonte, Eartha Kitt, and Lena Horne. On his 1960 solo debut, Duran assembled a stellar lineup of conga players in Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Juan Cheda and they created a cinematic blend of Afro-Cuban, cha-cha, and exotic jazz styles. This album offers a rich, percussive vibe while showcasing Duran's influential contribution to Latin music.

Review: Argentina's cumbia maestro Rolando Bruno returns with his new album, Cosas Raras. This release showcases Bruno and Grupo Arevalo's signature "cumbia trash" style-a vibrant fusion of Peruvian cumbia, punk, and eclectic pop culture references like UFOs and horror movies. The album, their third, expands their musical horizons by incorporating Arabic and flamenco influences, Afro disco, Japanese pop, Latin American ballads, and Dominican merengue. The lead single, 'Merentrash,' offers a danceable 'merenrap' with a retro Miami flair. As part of the experimental tropical music scene, Bruno's project aims to gain wider recognition in the U.S. with its infectious rhythms and psychedelic flair.

Review: Ajate's third album, Dala Toni, is a vibrant fusion of Afro groove and Japanese traditional Ohayashi music, showcasing the band's innovative approach to blending diverse musical traditions. Founded by Japanese musician Junichiro "John" Imaeda after a revelatory experience in West Africa, Ajate brings together ten passionate musicians to create music that transcends cultural boundaries. Utilizing a mix of traditional instruments like drums, flutes, and bells, as well as handmade bamboo instruments crafted by Imaeda himself, such as the unique 'Jaate' and 'Piechiku,' Ajate's sound is both powerful and distinctive. Their incorporation of Afrobeat rhythms and Japanese vocals adds further depth and richness to their music, reflecting themes of human connection, unity, and the joy of life.Having gained acclaim for their explosive live performances in Japan and beyond, including appearances at prestigious festivals like Sukiyaki Meets The World and WOMAD UK, Ajate's music resonates with audiences worldwide. With Dala Toni, they continue to push the boundaries of global music, solidifying their position as pioneers of the genre "made in Japan."

Review: By the time they released Saci Perere in 1980, carioca outfit Banda Black Rio were amongst Brazil's biggest dance music stars - an outfit whose blends of samba, jazz, disco, funk and MPB moved the heart and feet of the country's dancers. The set remains a timeless Brazilian classic - hence this much-deserved CD reissue. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the leisurely sundown headiness of 'Saci Perere', and horn-heavy jauntiness of 'Melissa', to the funky samba-jazz fusion of 'Subindo O Morro', synth-laden downtempo sunshine of 'Amor Natural' and the atmospheric Latin disco-funk of 'Broto Sexy'. An album that should be in every Brazilian music fan's collection.

Review: In the mid-80s, Svitlana Okhrimenko, Oleksandr Kohanovs'kyi, and Tamila Mazur, students at the Reinhold Glier Kyiv Academy of Music, formed the foundation of Cukor Bila Smert. Their blend of music and camaraderie led to the addition of Eugene Taran, who further helped shape the band's vision. Dubbed Sugar - White Death, their ironic moniker challenged media sensationalism and amidst endless musical exploration, they crafted two albums in 1988 and 1989. The band's unique "sugar calypso sound" emerged, a blend of Kohanovs'kyi's music and lyrics by Okhrimenko and Taran. A significant studio session in 1990 yielded tracks featured on the Mannered Music compilation which sparked international interest. Their journey concluded in 1993 with the release of "Selo" by Koka Records, and now some of the best bits make it onto this new collection.

Though not released in its original sequence, this album is a stunning showcase of Kenyan funk-inspired music. Each band member contributed to the songwriting process during the making of the album which means it has resulted in a diverse and unique collection of tracks where each has its own distinct character. Originally released in 1976 and 1978 as Fisherman, this masterpiece is now being reissued for the third time in a very limited edition of 500 copies with a fresh cover design. It's an enduring favourite so don't sleep on this latest chance to cop it.
