New York Afternoon (feat Marc Evans) (3:49)
New York Afternoon (instrumental) (3:15)
Review: This is the 45-only version of the title track from Snowboy's 16th album "New York Afternoon".With a different and special ending to the album version, his 23rd single features the amazing Jon Lucien-esque vocals of House music legend, Marc Evans. It's a percussion-driven Afro Cuban Jazz monster that'll please anyone from the Hancock fans to the Monk freaks. There's also an instrumental cut on the B-side. This is a limited pressing of 500 units.

Review: It would be fair to say that Gregory Porter is a man on the rise. In the four years since he made his debut, the jazz singer-songwriter has become one of the most name-checked soul men on the planet. Take Me To The Alley, his first album for three years, sees him flexing his musical muscles more impressively than ever before. After opening with the beautiful Marvin Gaye style "Holding On", and Curtis Mayfield-goes jazz thrills of "Don't Lose Your Steam", the singer-songwriter runs through a series of up-tempo and down-tempo compositions that sit somewhere between classic soul and evocative jazz.

Aqua Sansa
Silent Bell
Daybreak
Takone
Conspiration
Review: Following in the pioneering steps of his father, the legendary Karlheinz Stockhausen, Markus Stockhausen made quite a splash with his first LP Aqua Sansa, recorded with Jasper Van't Hof. While jazz can be used as a reference point on this highly sought after album from 1980, it's more appropriate to think of the record in terms of freeform timbral expression. There's a fourth world, Jon Hassell-esque charm to pieces such as "Daybreak" while the likes of "Takone" sport a more eerie, minimalist charm. Either way, it's a highly worthy reissue for a much vaunted gem of leftfield music.

Bembeya Latin Strut (4:53)
Dope Walk Slow Talk (5:09)
Review: Japan's super-prolific Soul Garden take an Afro-Cuban diversion for their latest release with one of the country's leading Afro-jazz troupes Bembe. The band - led by Yusuje Asano - have a reputation as a live act that is second to none but their releases aren't quite as prolific as their touring schedule. Last spotted on Hiroko Otsuka's Piece The Next mix last year, this is their first Soul Garden 45" and it's highly advisable you jump on it... "Bemeya Latin Strut" is a densely weaved jazz workout with elements at delicately balanced odds. "Dope Walk Slow Talk" is a much more sedate affair as the sax whips up a fire over a smouldering reggae beat. Dope indeed.

Review: Soul and jazz meet head to head on this new LP from Hot Casa, to truly bring the two genres into their natural alignment. Hola Adisa Farrar is a vocalist who hails from California via Jamaican roots, while Florian Pellissier brings though his Parisian jazz stronghold, and the pair lay down some unmissable Dingwalls-reminiscent gems. In fact, this is the perfect sort of album for those diggers looking for that perfect jazz-funk record, the one that slipped away; the drumming across all of the tracks is hypnotic but changes enough to retain that mysticism, the pianos glide over the melodies in a delicate but playful way, and Farrar's vocals are an utter beauty spilled all over the rhythm. A must have, and a warmly recommended album. Supported by Mukatsuku.
