Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Review: You just cannot miss with this superb label which is now up to release number 33 in this series. And the latest is a golden-era classic featuring legendary mic men A Tribe Called Quest and top soul boy Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band. The A-side features the track taken from A Tribe Called Quest's Love Movement album so is packed with their signature beats and bars. On the B-side, you are treated to the funky original sample source from Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band which delivers a raw, infectious groove. Hugh Black & George Ferris - "Candy Lady" (2:18)
Review: The studio of Harry J's in Jamaica has turned out another pair of belters here. This limited edition and hand-numbered 7" features two killer 1969 tunes. The first is a bittersweet roots tune with a lead trumpet that does all the work. It's in conversation with the organ below and as they to and fro, expressing their pair, the bass rumbles and the percussion jangles. As well as that standout from Richard Ace, the flip-side has a super rare tune 'Candy Lady' by Hugh Black & George Ferris. It's another earthy tune with lovestruck vocals.

Review:  Those playful edit and remix maestros at French label Act of Sedition are back with another red hot, super limited 2 x 7" special. It kicks off with a nice languid remix of the classic 'Let Love Be Free' with an extra low slung sleazy bassline beneath the gorgeous vocal. Bruno Belissimo goes for a heavy, scuffed up deep house take on 'Coffee & Cocaine' that has a vast bassline and some jazzy keys all tumbling off grid. Lego edits 'It Aint Reggae' into a high speed boogie gem and Bully Boy offers a chunky disco stomper to round things out.

Review: Soul fans are in heaven this month, just from the releases of Soul Direction alone. The label has been hard at work serving up plenty of golden nuggets and next in the spotlight is Joe Adams. 'That's Not Half Bad' is his stunning version of the Gene Woodbury classic. This is another lost tune that was found on a DAT tape recording made from material that was laying around in an old basement. It comes steeped in rich Philly soul and with gorgeous vocals that for us outshine the original. On the flip, it is backed with an equally sublime mid-tempo heart-wrencher for those tender moments.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: As showcased by DJ Koco from Japan on instagram and as the label artwork makes clear, this two-tracker from the previously unheard Alex Santos Orchestra was made in tribute to Creed Taylor's legendary CTI Records imprint, which during the 1970s released some of the finest jazz, jazz-funk and fusion ever made. On side A the studio collective gives their interpretation of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 epic 'Red Clay', with the track's most famous musical elements - jaunty sax riffs and mazy electric piano motifs - rising above a funkier, warmer and tighter interpretation of the track's low-end groove. Turn to the flip for their version of Bob James' favourite 'Nautilus', a harder edge take that combines a faithfully spacey take on the original's electric piano melody with sweatier beats and heavier horns.

Review: Los Angeles' Alex Santos Orchestra previously paid tribute to classic jazz-funk imprint Red Clay Records via a 45 featuring covers of two classic cuts. On this follow-up, they've turned their attention to another similarly lauded label, Flying Dutchman Records, offering their interpretations of two tracks associated with one of the imprint's most-loved artists, Lonnie Liston Smith. On the A-side they handle 'Devika (Goddess)', a David Hubbard composition that they re-frame as an atmospheric, bass guitar-led slab of laidback, head-nodding jazz funk full of warming electric piano, flanged funk guitars and hazy horns. Arguably even better is their party-starting take on Liston-Smith's most celebrated tune, 'Expansions', whose familiar bassline and infectious groove never fails to get dancefloors moving.

Review: The latest set of Diguma Edits sees dusty-fingered Japanese digger-turned-re-editor DJ Muro take his scalpel to 'Got to Get Your Love' by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, a suspenseful and action-packed 1980 number from producers Peter Brown and Gary Davis. Muro first cuts down and compresses the ten-minute vocal version, making merry with the track's unusual combination of classic disco grooves, showtunes-style orchestration and eccentric vocals. Over on the flip he does a similar job on the slightly different instrumental take, in turns showcasing the track's crunchy guitars, warming electric pianos, spacey synths and grandiose orchestration.

Bristol beatmakers The Allergies are just as funky and always serve up a massive dose of sunshine on their Latin flecked sounds. The opener here is 'Move On Baby' and is one of the best tunes the pair have ever laid down. Its packed with great samples, a high speed 60s spy theme rhythm and vintage rhythm 'n' blues vocals over energetic drum breaks. Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Reissued for 2018, it's still as endearingly lofi and mesmerising as the five piece Afrobeat evangelists lay down two alluring pieces. "Qnitia" leans back on a hypnotising chord swing, sparse percussion and vibrant sax and subtle dubby echoes while "Makossa" takes a well known rim-shotting rhythm and cooks it up slow n' low for another smouldering summer.

Four Walls Of Gloom (2:12)
Review: Soul4Real has gotten 'soulful for real' with this third outing, coming through in the form of 2 previously unreleased gems from US band The Anglos. This is some pretty niche gear, what with the band having only put out a handful of 7s back in the 60, so it feels like a special occasion to have some new material from them on our shelves. These tunes were apparently destined to land on the Botanic imprint back in the day, and are famously produced and engineered by the great Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams, which is why they have a certain roughness that is rarely heard on other soul records. "Broke Down Piece Of Man" is a fast, beat-heavy number with a psychedelic edge that reflects the state of mind back then, while "Four Walls Of Gloom" takes the gospel tradition as its main ingredient, offering a wonderfully uplifting midtempo rocker for the heart and soul.

Review: Rare German funk from '78, Black Pearl have unearthed something incredible here. "Hi Baby Out" only ever saw private press, which is crazy considering how insanely funky it is. Hitting with a Nigerian-style funk with big backing vocals, highlife guitars and far-away horns, it's an instant call to the dancefloor. "War", meanwhile, has never before been released and was found by chance on its original master tapes. Listen to the juicy slap-bass and swinging drums and you'll agree it's beyond crazy that this didn't receive a release - it's criminal. Look up Apotheke's story, too, if you have time - it's fascinating.

Unicorn Rider (4:04)
Review: There's not a lot of information out there about Arcade of Serpe, so let's skip the back story and cut to the chase. If that's really an appropriate turn of phrase here. Nothing about Cave Adventure feels rushed. Nothing. In fact, it's quite the opposite, opening on dub-wise bass and playful organs, the atmosphere - somewhere between lackadaisical, come down, BBQ, and psychedelic - subtly rises, although not to a crescendo as much as a delicate fade out after a few minutes strutting to the funk-laden groove. Flip it to find more explorations in the sonic ether, with 'Unicorn Rider' smoothly stepping out into a surreal track that uses space and emptiness to accentuate the noises that are there, which mirror, if not directly reflect, the opening title tune. It's quiet, but you won't forget it in a hurry.

They are all very different in style but all highly effective. 'International Truth' opens with strident and funky disco drums and noodling guitar lines with soulful tones lighting up the beats. 'Don's Expensive Afro' is a rework of a rare Afro-disco track with more expressive vocals instructing the floor to move. Last of all is a stunning reimagining of an overlooked Stevie Wonder gem, 'Stevland's Run', which is off-balance and unusual funk madness laden with psyched-out guitar work.

This particular 7" - which comes with a booklet - is a reissue of Aswads' delightful 'I'm So Proud'. She joins forces with Andrew Napoleon on A-side 'Body Fly', a glossy slab of mid-80s synth-funk/synth-pop fusion rich in squelchy P-funk bass, bright lead lines and colourful chords. Estonia-based Latvian Artis Boris sits in the producer's chair on side two, underpinning a typically expressive and soulful Killtron vocal with sinewy strings, modern boogie grooves and nods aplenty to early 1980s disco. Naturally, the sound is nostalgic, but both cuts sound undeniably fresh.

Connie Laverne - "Can't Live Without You" (2:43)
Anderson Brothers - "I Can See Him Loving You" (2:48)
Review: Outta Sight's third 7" is another vital pair of hugely desirable, collectible, and rare Northern Soul singles. They are both taken from the new Club Classics album of remastered floor filler anthems and are well deriving of their own slice of wax. These singles from Connie Laverne and The Anderson Brother were put out first in 1974/95 shortly before the GSF label folded. They were DJ-only promos which accounts for their rareness and come with plenty of rumours attached. Musically they are gems that were played from the birth of the scene at Manchester's Twisted Wheel to it's heyday at Wigan Casino.

Uptown Funk - "Yendo Loco" (7:09)
Diana Swan - "We Gotta Boogie" (4:45)
Review: Super Spicy celebrates getting to five years old in the best way it knows how - with a new release, of course. This one comes on translucent re wax and brings together a blend of seasoned and fresh talent including Hotmood, Shalvoy, Diana Swan, Musta, Adam Nova and Uptown Funk. These tracks do a fine job of reflecting the label's dedication to innovation right from the off. Musta's 'Fresco' is a nice jumbled percussive disco funker, Hotmood's 'Ayaaa' rides on some electric synth waves and Shalvo's 'Dancin' is a smooth cruise for the midnight hours. On the flip side are three more vibrant and vivacious disco dancers for good times only.

Dance Your Blues Away (feat Amp Fiddler) (4:35)
Review: Any Omar S release is worth checking, but when it also features Detroit funk godfather and Motor City legend Amp Fiddler, as well as Andre Foxxe of Parliament-Funkadelic, then it's pretty much buy on sight. You never know what you're gaping to get with the FXHE boss, and never was that more true than here on this sweet little 7". A-side 'The First One Hundred' is a loop of Omar S's trademark dusty drums and a deeply buried bass guitar riff that is super funky, and 'Dance Your Blues Away (feat Amp Fiddler)' sounds like Prince making house music in Omar S's studio. They are short, but oh so sweet.

Son Palenque - "A Pila El Arroz" (Sound Culture remix) (3:58)
Tropical Scenes (Afroqbano remix) (4:07)
Review: Windy City collective Future Rootz are all about mixing up worldly electronic sounds, Latin, tropical bass and global jazz. This second volume in their new series does just that with two expressive remixes of iconic Afro-Colombian tracks. On Side A, Sound Culture delivers a modern take on Son Palenque's legendary 'A Pila el Arroz,' which was originally composed by Justo Valdez for Palenque Records. He infuses it with fresh and bubbly bass and hypnotic vocal chants. On side-B, Afroqbano reimagines 'Tropical Scenes' by adding a vibrant, rhythm-heavy twist to the original that sympathetically blends traditional Afro-Colombian sounds with electronic influences into a wiggling bit of irresistible and sunny global fusion.

Review: Given that Wild Cherry's 'Play That Funky Music' and Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' are both amongst the most anthemic disco-era funk cuts around, many may see these new remixes from Marco Fratty as being a bit unnecessary. Yet while neither track needed tampering with, the Italian producer has done a terrific job in updating them. His full vocal versions of both tracks make great use of the original instrumentation and vocals, effectively extending them - re-edit style - while adding marginally tougher new beats that never overwhelm the mix. Even better though are the two dub mixes, which use familiar sonic tropes - delay-laden vocal snippets, Refkex style instrumental builds and so on - to help turn both tracks into 21st century dub disco epics. A surprise triumph!

Review: The ever awesome Honest Jon's decision to reissue its back catalogue in digital format gives you a chance to delve back into the amazing album of Chaabi music from the Abdel Hadi Halo & The El Gusto Orchestra of Algiers. The Damon Albarn fronted excursion by Team Honest Jons into Algiers in 2007 has been compared to a film of certain famous Cuban musicians several times over, but the focus should certainly be on the music. Comprised of six lengthy tracks of gripping rhythmic music that sways effortlessly between classical and popular styles, the 19 minutes that make up "Mal Djifni" prove a real highlight, sounding like it could go on forever. This has to be heard to be believed.

Review: A true lesson in Afrobeat right here as Miguel Toro, Gyver Hypman and Augusto recreate some of Tony Allen's classic rhythms and deliver them as neat, funk-coated instrumentals. Perfect for DJ sets and sampling alike, a huge amount of musicianship and thought has gone into these. From the super mellow rim shot riddim of "Niaja Breaks" to the more thriving frenetic flavours of "Afrobeat Jam" (a beat that's found favour with the likes of Toddla T et al in recent years), this is a fine revisitation and a genuine education.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni was an Italian composer and bandleader well known for his distinctive whistling style and a lifetime's worth of achievements. In 1972 he recorded Open Air Parade with Giovanni Tommaso, a wonderful curio of psychedelic obscurity with a library music flavour. It's bright and joyous, but also shot through with a heady transcendence and a kind of regalia - quite the unique combination rendered in exquisite clarity on this reissue from Sonor Music. If you enjoy the luxurious big band adventures of Italian greats like Ennio Morricone and Piero Umiliani, then Open Air Parade is sure to be of great interest.

Love Is A Natural Thing
Review: How often does a superstar band leader hand his band over to his drummer, while he steps back to become a sideman? That's what Fela Kuti, undoubtedly the coolest, hippest, best known African musician on the planet, did in 1975. "Afro Disco Beat" is the complete seventies anthology of the drummer and music director of superstar Fela Kuti's band Africa 70, the creators of a new style called 'Afrobeat', one of the (if not THE) hippest rhythmic music styles of the seventies. Tony Allen was an incredible drummer of whom Fela Kuti said "he sounds like four drummers".

Love Is A Natural Thing
Review: Kindred Spirits get a big, heartfelt hug from Juno for their Tony Allen reissue series, in which they lovingly restore and repress 12"s from the master of afrobeat. The No Discrimination EP was first recorded in 1978, shortly after Allen ended his decade long collaboration with Fela Kuti. The silky funk of the title track suits the message of peace contained within the lyrics; flip over for the awesome "Ariya" - a reminder, as if we needed one, that Allen is truly one of the finest drummers in existence. Those already enamoured with the percussive charms of irresistible rhythms of the Nigerian's work will be all over this - for those of you yet to succumb to this man's singular talent, there's no better place to start.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.
