Check It Out People (reissue)
Cat: SSR 218. Rel: 18 Jan 21
Funk
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People" (4:19)
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub) (4:08)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

Hot Pants: I'm Coming Coming I'm Coming (reissue)

Funk
  1. Bobby Byrd - "Hot Pants-I'm Coming , Coming , I'm Coming" (2:32)
  2. Lyn Collins - "Mama Feelgood" (4:19)
Review: Soopastole now strikes out on his own eponymous 7' edits series and we must say it's impressive. These are well executed and above all much needed edits so credit to the edit! On the A side "Hot Pants" is an edit of the original track and the "dub beats version" (found only on the Urban release in 1988) starts with the drum break. On the flip we have got "Mama Feelgood" which has heavier drums and the instrumental intro and outro.

The Boston Drop
The Boston Drop (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: SSR 224. Rel: 29 Jan 21
Funk
  1. The Boston Drop (vocal) (4:05)
  2. The Boston Drop (instrumental) (4:07)
Review: Having enjoyed a successful 2020, DJ Soopasoul strides into the new year in confident mood via a fresh Soopastole Edits release focused on the work of one of his favourite artists, the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. Interestingly, the legendary artist doesn't actually feature all that much on the A-side vocal mix of 'Boston Drop', with Soopasoul limiting his involvement to a few excited yelps, grunts and instructions to the backing band. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, because the musical accompaniment - which can be admired further on the tight, DJ-friendly instrumental take - offers an enticing mixture of hard, sun-bright guitar licks, heavy drum-breaks, handclaps and chunky bass. Like the rest of the series, it sounds like a guaranteed floor-filler.

Sex CREAM (reissue)
Cat: SSR 216RE. Rel: 17 Jun 21
Funk
  1. James Brown & The Wu Tang Clan - "Sex CREAM" (3:33)
  2. James Brown - "Sex Machine" (dub edit) (3:02)
Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole" edits series is one of the producer's biggest yet. A-side "Sex C.R.E.A.M" is particularly potent, with the mash-up maestro layering the vocals from Wu-Tang Clan classic "C.R.E.A.M" over a chunky beat crafted out of classic James Brown samples. To our ears, it's arguably better than the Wu-Tang original, or at least a little more dancefloor-friendly. Fittingly, Brown gets the treatment on the flip with Soopasoul getting busy with the EQs on a suitably heavy but stripped back "dub edit" of all-time-classic "Sex Machine". While it probably didn't need tampering with, he's done a very good job of delivering a version that successfully takes the track in a different direction.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. We Are Edits (4:37)
  2. We Are Edits (Cosmo On The Groove) (3:58)
Review: As the title sneakily suggests, the latest volume in DJ Soopasoul's essential "Soopastole Edits" series sees the prolific re-editor and mash-up merchant take his scalpel to all time disco classic "We Are Family". We could be wrong, but it sounds like it was created using the multi-track parts, focusing as it does for much of the duration on a stripped-back, DJ-friendly groove, selected vocal snippets and delay-laden musical elements not always audible on the original version. Over on the flipside "Cosmo On The Groove" version, he takes a slightly different approach, adding a classic old school hip-hop acappella to an expertly cut-up version of the track that utilizes a little more of the sing-along chorus.

Home Is Where The Edit Is
Cat: SSR 222. Rel: 17 Jun 21
Funk
  1. Home Is Where The Edit Is (4:03)
  2. Home Is Where The Dub Is (4:03)
Review: It is undervalued soul singer Esther Phillips's cover version of Gil Scott's Heron's cult classic 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is' that provides the source material for this latest edit from DJ Soopasoul. ON the a-side is a version pretty faithful to the original, only with more bulky drums, drawn out grovers and some extra drum fills for that more suitable dance floor feel. The strings will also soar on the right system. A dub pairs it back slightly to a raw funk groove with plenty of hard blue eyed soul also colouring the mix.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. It Ain't Hard To Tell (mix 1) (3:48)
  2. It Ain't Hard To Tell (mix 2) (3:46)
Review: Currently in the throes of a serious reissue mission, bringing many of his old funklets back to life on wax, Jalapeno mainstay Danny Soopasoul lets these very cheeky takes on Mr Illmatic out into the ether. Side-A is pure laid back west coast vibery while the B lays Nas's famous bars down over a Bill Conti-style horn arrangement where the feel of a montage and a triumphant stair-run is imminent. Limited to 300 copies, it ain't hard to tell you how quickly this will fly.

Funk
  1. Funky Hot Grits (part 2) (3:48)
  2. Hot Grits Beats (2:45)
Review: Serial party starter Soopasoul raises the Rufus with this flighty take on this gutsy 77 classic. Splicing the vocals down to the nitty gritty (excuse us) so it's a bare naked call and response over some well polished breaks, Soopasoul's added a whole new lease of dancefloor energy. Flip for even more stripped back beat track. Hot.

Hip Hop/R&B
  1. Push Em Up Now (vocal)
  2. Push Em Up Now (instrumental)
Review: When it comes to tasteful mash-ups and club-ready re-edits, DJ Soopasoul's Soopastole Edits series is always a reliable source of fresh dancefloor heat. He's in predictably fine form on this latest volume - the 26th in total, fact fans - which sees him re-animate an already killer Fatman Scoop cut. On the A-side, he places energy-raising snippets of the Harlem-raised, gravel-voiced rapper's 'Put Your Hands Up' atop a funky backing track crafted from loops lifted from a classic disco-funk workout. That fresh, sample-heavy instrumental re-edit can be heard in full on the flip, offering is a chance to wallow in the killer groove and tight, clipped guitar licks.

Funk
  1. Damn Right I Hit Em Up (vocal version) (4:09)
  2. Damn Right I Hit Em Up (instrumental) (4:20)
Review: DJ Soopasoul is back on his own Soopastole Edits label, this time paying tribute to the more great funk sounds and killer drum breaks. The artist is well versed in subtly reworking the classics, bringing them up to date and adding his own unique flavour. He opens this limited 7" with 'Damn Right I Hit Em Up' which rides rough over a tight bass riff, with biggie's raps up top and a big beat pumping the vibe. Flip it over for the instrumental version, which strips it right back to the bare essentials.

Funk
  1. Ode To Clyde (part 1) (4:03)
  2. Ode To Clyde (part 2) (3:42)
Review: For the latest hot-to-trot missive on his popular Soopastole Edits imprint, DJ Soopasoul has decided to pay tribute to funk's most sampled sticks-man, the late Clyde Stubblefield. Fittingly, he's chosen to do that by chopping up James Brown's 'Funky Drummer', whose much-sampled break was played by Stubblefield and has appeared on countless hip-hop cuts over the years. 'Ode to Clyde (Part 1)' naturally gives Stubblefield's break plenty of airtime, along with the song's hazy funk instrumentation and Brown's rasping lead vocal. Over on the flip Brown takes second billing to a spate of horn solos lifted from the legendary nine-minute version of 'Funky Drummer', with Stubblefield's incredible drumming providing constant dancefloor pressure.

Funk
  1. James Brown & The Crooklyn Dodgers - "More Sex Cream" (Crooklyn Style) (3:44)
  2. James Brown - "More Sex Cream" (instrumental mix) (3:44)
Review: Earlier this summer, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul raised our temperatures by layering Wu-Tang Clan vocals over a chunky, funk-fuelled backing track crafted from snippets of James Brown jams. He called it "Sex Cream", and now he's back with more sickly-sweet goodness based around the down-low greatness of the Godfather of Soul. A-side "More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style)" delivers a similar-sounding JB-inspired beat, this time peppered with rhymes from "Crooklyn". It works wonderfully, of course, as does the flipside instrumental version. Bare party-starting fun for funk-loving hip-hop heads!

Funk
  1. The Inside Man (part 1 - Soopasoul remix) (4:18)
  2. The Inside Man (part 2 - Soopasoul remix) (4:16)
Review: Back in 2014, Timewarp Music asked DJ Soopasoul to remix "Inside Man", one of the strongest cuts from Croatian producer Funky Destination's funk-fuelled debut album, Revolution is Only Solution. While one mix appeared on a digital-only label compilation, Soopasoul actually handed in two reworks. Here both get an outing on wax for the first time. The A-side version is particularly sweet, with Soopasoul layering the original's meandering and lilting trumpet solo over a rolling funk groove rich in big bass, jangling guitars and frenetic drum breaks. The flipside revision emphasizes this groove more, looping and extending the breaks for easier DJ use and a livelier dancefloor response.

Funk
  1. Come Back To Me (Soopasoul remix) (4:32)
  2. Come Back To Me (Soopasoul remix - instrumental) (3:22)
Review: DJ Soopasoul has previously breathed new life into tracks by Croatian producer Funky Destination, so it's little surprise to see him putting his spin on the Osijek-based artist's latest missive. He does a terrific job, offering up vocal and instrumental versions of "Come Back To Me" rich in long, tension-building intros, fuzzy funk horns, bass-heavy grooves, swirling orchestration and hard-wired guitar riffs. While the instrumental version is tidy, our pick of the pair is undoubtedly the A-side remix. We're not sure who the lead vocalist is, but her delivery is incredible. Don't sleep on this one!

  1. How Superstitious (vocal mix) (4:14)

Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.
