The 5 Amigos
The 5 Amigos (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SCMV 002. Rel: 15 Mar 21
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. The Funk District - "Like A Bird On A Cage" (6:13)
  2. Hotmood - "La La La" (6:00)
  3. C Da Afro & JB Boogie - "Latin Vibez" (6:11)
  4. Monsieur Van Pratt - "With You" (5:59)
Review: Set your phasers to disco, the Spincat label is back with more of that fired up, exquisitely edited goodness that makes you want to get down. First up on this various artists 12" is The Funk District, who keeps things heady and swooning on the Philly string busting 'Like A Bird On A Cage'. Hotmood, fresh from bringing the good stuff to Disco Fruit, is feeling feisty on the decidedly jacked up 'La La La'. It's an uptempo stomper with a relentless charge and a loopy flavour that could sit in a techno set as easily as a disco one. C Da Afro and JB Boogie team up to kick the B side off with 'Latin Vibez', which works in some choice 80s electro funk flavours amongst the driving disco beat.

Masterworks Vol 3 Part 1
  1. The Funk District - "The Funky Joint" (7:40)
  2. Oldchap - "To The Top" (5:20)
  3. Dr Packer - "Your Big Chance" (5:47)
  4. Hotmood - "Raw Dance" (6:08)
Review: Masterworks Music mastermind 80's Child unleashes the third volume of his Masterworks compilations. This is a two-part vinyl release with the first part featuring The Funk District hailing from Cancun, who kicks off the A side with "The Funky Joint". He gets a good ol' time shuffle going before handing it over to Parisian Oldchap for a proper low-slung boogie in the form of "To The Top". On the flip, Godfather of the western Australian dance scene Dr. Packer gets down with a wicked edit on the late night sexiness of "Your Big Chance" and fellow Mexican Hotmood goes out on a high note with smokin' hot vocal number "Raw Dance".

The Rhythm EP
Cat: GCP 003. Rel: 16 Oct 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. The Rhythm Is There (6:18)
  2. My Darling (Dina) (6:35)
  3. The Rhythm Is There (Doc Jam remix) (5:56)
  4. Tropical Space (6:10)
Review: Always adept at reading the crowd and armed with decades of experience behind the decks, well-travelled man and Discoweey label boss Hotmood makes his debut on UK-based Giant Cuts with four summery tracks on "The Rhythm EP". Combining slo-mo boogie, groove laden disco and quality house sounds, he kicks things off with the sleazy late night funk attack of "The Rhythm Is There", before going deeper on the bass-driven soul loops of "My Darling (Dina)", leading up to the thumpin' B1 cut - a remix by Doc Jam that's chock-a-block with dancefloor dynamics and closing out with a fusion of jazz-funk, disco-house and evocative tropical jazz samples on "Tropical Space". Fans of Tropical Disco, Ravanelli Disco Club and Samosa will especially love this.

Disco Fruit Sampler 02
Disco Fruit Sampler 02 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DFV 013. Rel: 15 Mar 21
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Hotmood - "You Are A Star" (6:37)
  2. C Da Afro - "So Good For Me" (6:03)
  3. Mitiko - "Back To Dance" (7:15)
  4. Loshmi - "Regah" (6:51)
Review: Get those party pumps greased up and don thine finest gladrags, it's time to hit the disco with the fruitiest bunch in town. By now you no doubt know about the level of quality you should be expecting from a Disco Fruit 12", and this second sampler doesn't disappoint. Label regulars are present and correct, with Hotmood kicking things off with the sultry, sizzling 'You Are A Star', while C Da Afro vamps things up with the kind of uptempo electro-disco that borders on hi-NRG. Mitiko slides into a slinky Balearic groove on 'Back To Dance', and Loshmi takes things in a more esoteric, jazz-inflected direction on standout cut 'Regah'.

Discipline Of Swing Vol 2
Discipline Of Swing Vol 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SSWVNLZD 002. Rel: 29 Mar 21
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Hotmood - "Seductive Look" (5:34)
  2. C Da Afro - "Time To Move" (6:03)
  3. Ziggy Phunk - "Space Ranger" (6:44)
  4. Alexny - "Umbele" (6:48)
Review: The See-Saw label calls up a hit list of disco edit dynamos to bring a little party rocking magic to their latest 12", leading in with the looped up funk of Hotmood. 'Seductive Look' is the perfect insistent groove to get lost in, which contrasts with the bold and feisty 'Time To Move' by C Da Afro. Keeping things mixed up on the B side, Ziggy Phunk brings something special in the pattering, bongo-laden roller 'Space Ranger'. Alexny rounds things off with the low slung thwack and transcendent sax of 'Umbele', a track humming with the energy of Afrobeat at its source.

Perfect Duality Series
Cat: DEEPPA 01. Rel: 10 Nov 20
Funky/Club House
  1. Scruscru - "Mellow Yellow" (5:17)
  2. Jehan - "Once Again" (5:10)
  3. Hotmood - "Reach Out & Touch" (5:46)
  4. SofaTalk - "Love In Slow Mo" (4:47)
  5. Replika - "Rings Of Saturn" (7:21)
Review: Deeppa does a fine job of introducing itself into the world of vinyl labels with this inescapably sunny and luxuriant first offering. It's a rich VA affair with grown up grooves and mature musical stylings, starting with Scruscru's pool-side 'Mellow Yellow' and rolling through the more disco flecked undulations of 'Once Again'. Flip it over and you'll find the sun has gone down, the house betas get deep and the Rhodes solos get more twinkling and adventurous. 'Love In Slow Mo' could be a lost Roy Ayers track and 'Rings of Saturn' rides out the EP in smooth fashion.

Le Depanneur EP
Cat: ED 024. Rel: 21 Nov 18
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Ed Wizard & Double Disco Dee - "Spirit Power" (6:13)
  2. Duff Disco - "Burning Hot" (6:05)
  3. Hotmood - "I Was Born In Mexico" (6:18)
  4. Alex Zuiev - "I Feel Funky" (6:23)
Review: While most Editorial EPs feature contributions from a range of high-flying re-editors, their latest collection of cuts boasts a particularly star-studded line-up. For example, it features a now rare outing from Jeremy Duffy under the familiar Duff Disco alias, a gently rolling disco-soul revision called "Burning Hot" that underpins a suitably glassy-eyed cut with his trademark soft-touch house drums. More up-tempo fare can be found on side B, where Hotmood's disco-funk rearrangement "I Was Born In Mexico" - think restless slap bass, eyes-shut guitar solos, bouncy drums and rising horns - is joined by the razor-sharp disco-funk sweatiness of Alex Zuiev's "I Feel Funky". Arguably best of all, though, is Ed Wizard and Disco Double Dee's woozy, sample-heavy disco roller "Spirit Power".
