  1. Rainy Dub
  2. Faceless
Review: Honest Jon's present this sonically challenging but quite excellent twelve inch from Actress, allowing us the chance to indulge in his quite singular vision via some long overdue original material ahead of a forthcoming third album slated to appear in the spring of next year on the West London imprint. Always a musician who prefers to keep his captive audience guessing, it would be churlish to presume how that forthcoming album may sound on the basis of "Rainy Dub" and "Faceless", as neither will be present on it. However, there is plenty to admire here, with the lead track described quite presciently by the label as the "alien son of Sleng Teng". Just like that riddim pioneered a new wave of digital dancehall when Wayne Smith joined forces with King Jammy on "Under Me Sleng Teng", "Rainy Dub" seems to signify a concentrated shift in Cunningham's focus towards ever new jagged dissections through the fuzziest extremes of sub bass. Minute attention to detail such as the near indecipherable vocal gurgles trapped far beneath ensure you keep returning to the track, as new sonic elements come to light. "Faceless" creeps towards you like second album highlight "Purple Splazsh" regurgitated through a robotic variant of the human centipede, with the track's hazy melodic elements desperately trying to claw through the claustrophobic rhythms, creeping corroded textures and rising gurgles of stomach acid.

Review: "It's like painting with button and sliders... Melting and dripping, seeping yourself liquid into the machinery." So said Darren Cunningham when discussing the creation of R.I.P, his long awaited follow up to Splazsh. It's a compelling image that works in practice too. R.I.P creates microcosmic sound worlds within each track: "Holy Water" for instance tumbles in on itself in a melange of shimmering sinewave droplets, while the pitchshifted waves of "Tree Of Knowledge" seem to inhale and exhale like a living being, crumpling inwards on itself to repeat the same motion ad infinitum. And although it uses much the same, occasionally abrasive sonic building blocks as Cunningham's been developing for many years, the pastoral tones of "Uriel's Black Harp" and the Alva Noto styles of "Jardin" make R.I.P a surprisingly graceful album. It may not be techno as many will know it, but Cunningham has never made techno in the traditional sense anyway - and it's clear on listening to R.I.P that he's only just beginning to realise the musical forms that have been swarming inside his brain for years.

Review: When it comes to crafting distinctively off-kilter "ethno-techno" built around hypnotic, polyrhythmic drums, there's nobody quite as good as Florian Meyer AKA Don't DJ. Further proof of his majesty in this regard arrives via "Eternal Return", the epic, peak-time-focused opening track from the producer's latest double-pack excursion. Those seeking percussive, floor-friendly fare should also check "Circular Time", another bongo-laden tribal techno workout that sees Meyer get locked into an attractively organic drum groove for the best part of 12 minutes. Meyer's ability to conjure up odd but brilliant home listening fare is explored elsewhere on the EP, with the noisy, abstract weirdness of "Perpetual Flow" being joined by the chiming, hedgerow-fresh ambient bliss of awe-inspiring closing cut "Perseus-Pieces".

Review: The second Shangaan Electro/BBC remix package from Honest Jon's to arrive this week (the first featured Anthony Shake Shakir and Oni Ayhun - chec it) boasts two remixes from Mark Ernestus, the Basic Channel man with a long running affiliation to the West London label. Indeed it was Ernestus who curated the Shangaan Electro compilation for the imprint last year along with HJ's own Mark Ainley. Here he is employed to remix South African outfit BBC, with two wonderfully sparse, stripped back techno versions that bounce around your headphones in a hypnotising manner befitting of one of electronic music's most revered producers.

Review: Chicago eight-piece Hypnotic Brass Ensemble return with their first album in the best part of 10 years. Maturing with age, experience and decoration, they're even more rich, measured and magic than ever before. Our souls are arrested from the moment the slow spell-binding arpeggio of "Lead The Way" ignites the smouldering journey and the dreamy drama doesn't let up until the final whirling synth echoes of the finale track "Royalty". Highlights include the yearning trumpets and pensive plucks of "Midnight", the insistency and pace of "Heaven & Earth" and the playful swooning signature switches on "Now". Once again, a truly singular trip from the Cohran brothers. Essential.

Review: The spread of Caribbean musical culture in the UK owes much to Lord Kitchener, an internationally celebrated Calypso artist who traveled to Britain in 1948 on the Empire Windrush and made the country his home (in fact, he performed the specially written "London Is The Place For Me" for Pathe News after disembarking at Tilbury Dock). This fine collection from Honest Jon's focuses on the music he made during his time in Britain between 1948 and '62 (he then returned to Trinidad where he lived out the rest of his life), offering up a swathe of distinctive, much-loved calypso cuts that provided a much-needed musical lifeline for Caribbean people in the UK during the first decades of the post-war period.

Review: Based in New York City and famed for his sonic experimentalism, Madteo is back with another alluring three tracker on Honest Jon's. The music is all about rugged machine funk, busted loops and lo-fi house grooves that recall the greats like Moodymann. 'Str8 Crooked' is the most loose and clattering of the lot with its knackered bassline stay down low. The amusingly titled 'Build Back Better Sweatshops' is scuffed up deep house a la STL and 'Episcopi Vagantes' is an epic 16 minute tune with spinning hi hats, wonky synthesis and plenty of cavernous soundscapes to explore at 5am on a darkened dance floor.

Review: Released with the minimum of fanfare, Dismantle represents Rabih Beaini's first substantial release as Morphosis since last year's Tepco Report 12", and comes in the form of a five track double 12" release for Honest Jon's The first comprises two Morphosis productions obviously aimed at more adventurous DJs, with the title track (in collaboration with Donato Dozzy) comprising subtly rattling percussion and organic tones unfolding over a steady rhythmic pulse, while "Tamrat Version" comes across as more full bodied, with thicker organ textures tied up with pulsing synths. The second 12" meanwhile is something entirely different, comprising a live score to Carl Theodor Dreyer's Vampyr recorded in Romania; free of rhythm and utilising some outlandish modular sequencing, it's the producer at his most immersive.

Review: Coming completely out of nowhere, this collaborative album between two of dubstep's most revered producers is not only one of this year's best examples of the genre, but some of the best dubstep to emerge since the demise of Shackleton and Appleblim's Skull Disco label in 2008. In a landscape increasingly dominated by the sounds of genre hopping post-dubstep, this album is a timely reminder of the dark spaces dubstep once inhabited; "Jellybones" for instance utilises eastern percussion manipulated to increasing degrees of mind-warping confusion, whilst "Levitation" weaves furious rhythms around radiophonic weirdness, while closer "Monks On The Rum" is a gripping exercise in tension, contrasting cut-glass percussion with a hesitant bass. But for all the structural complexity of these tracks, for example in "Rooms Within a Room", which weaves a brooding string intro and sampled choir around traditional dubstep atmospheres, the pair have never sounded so focused. Essential.

Review: Sam Shackleton's "Deadman" was the surprise hit of his recent Fabric mix - a sought-after gem that took his particular take on techno and dubstep in a thrilling new direction. Now, it's finally available on vinyl, alongside an impressive King Midas Sound remix from Kevin Martin. "Deadman" itself is the one for club plays, an intoxicating fusion of conga-led percussion - influenced, one expects, by the tropical beats of UK funky's most forward-thinking practitioners - and his usual densely layered atmospherics. The King Midas Remix, meanwhile, offers a spaced-out, heavily ambient take that delights and confuses in equal measure.

  1. Anthony Shake Shakir Meets BBC (5:06)
  2. Oni Ayhun Meets Shangaan Electro (6:39)
Review: Anthony Shake Shakir and Oni Ayhun serve up two superb remixes of tracks from Honest Jon's 2010 Shangaan Electro compilation that showcased the more frenetic sounds of South African dance music. You probably won't be surprised to learn that both remixes are splendid, although Shakir's reimagination of BBC probably just shades it - a beefy, positively booming bass drum bristles beneath traditional percussive elements and lazer beam synth stabs. On the flip the enigmatic producer Oni Ayhun adopts a broken drum pattern, with all manner of curious sonic elements warped and twisted in the Swede's idiosyncratic style. Stunning stuff all round.

Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.

If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

Review: Fourth volume in the series celebrating the music of black London...Ginger Johnson and his friends invite musicians whose lives and artistic ambitions carried them all over the world: calypso and kwela are back and highlife and bebop with a little rock'n'roll, a mambo indio, a shango hymn and a chachacha for bellydancing jazzbos. Visit the Johannesburg zoo in China on Harrow Road! Rare artist pics by Val Wilmer.

Review: Honest Jon's "London Is The Place For Me" series has been dormant for a while, but previously offered a much-needed history lesson in the musical contribution made by Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the capital city during the post-war period. This seventh volume - the first for six years - continues this admirable approach by focusing on calypso, mento, Joropo and steel band music. It's a wonderfully eye-opening collection that includes a mixture of tracks by well-known musical SS Empire Windrush passengers - Lord Beginner being the most famous - as well as lesser-known lights who combined Island rhythms and instrumentation with lyrics about life in Britain. Superb stuff.
