  1. Trouble In My Way (Afshin & Kiss My Black Jazz edit) (7:42)
  2. The Riot (Afshin & Kiss My Black Jazz edit) (6:00)
Review: Something a little different from G.A.M.M here, as Parisian DJ Afshin joins forces with the mysterious Kiss My Black Jazz to offer up two incendiary edits. The real surprise killer is A-side "Trouble In My Way", which subtly turns a blues-era recording of a traditional slave sing-along into a handclap-heavy chunk of infectious gospel-house brilliance. It takes a little time to build up, but when the heavier beats drop midway through you'll have dancers eating out of the palm of your hand. Flipside "The Riot" sees them make merry with a Hammond-heavy chunk of 1960s jazz-funk, extending and reworking the cut to make it suitably sweaty, heavy and life affirming.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Jesuino Galo Doido (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
  2. Make It Reggae (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
Review: Earlier in the month, Parisian producer Afshin joined forces with Kiss My Black Jazz and served up a brilliant, two-track missive of jazz-funk and blues-house reworks on G.A.M.M. Here they reunite for round two. This time round, they begin by reworking a shuffling, chant-along Afro-Brazilian gem of unknown origin, extending the carnival-ready percussive intro before unleashing the shuffling, sun-kissed samba rhythm and some of the sweetest vocals this side of a sing-along in a chocolate factory. Over on side B they give a similar tune to a killer chunk of reggae-funk fusion rich in warm dub bass, bongo-laden beats, bluesy guitar solos, fuzzy horns and James Brown style guttural vocals.

  1. You've Gotta Have Freedom (4:34)
  2. You've Gotta Have Freedom (instrumental) (4:35)
Review: Astonishingly, Boogaloo's re-make of Pharoah Sanders classic "You've Gotta Have Freedom" is now 24 years old. It was originally included on the B-side of the jazz-loving Swedish hip-hop outfit's 1995 EP "Humongous Steps (Back Down To London)", but arguably became more widely known when it was reissued by G.A.M.M. on 12" in 2003. Here it appears on 7" for the first time, with the band's vocal version - a positive, life-affirming delight that brilliantly flits between sections faithful to Sanders' version and rapped section underpinned by live hip-hop breaks - being accompanied by an equally impressive instrumental take. If it's not already in your collection, this edition should be an essential purchase.

  11. Four-dimensional Dub (Manchester mix) (4:40)
Review: With a sterling reputation in house across labels such as Local Talk and Glenview, often with provocative, political and conscious connotations, Russian craftsman Alexander Lay Far now draws even deeper feathers from his cap as he brings our attention to UK duo Riddim Research. Working closely with the pair to bring their floor-minded dub to life, the vibes sit somewhere between Fink, King Tubby, Silicone Soul and Mala depending where you place the needle on the record. From the chuggy swing of "Hustler's Dub" to the pant-swinging JB break on "Keep On Rocking" to the Smith & Mighty sized dub nodder "Clerks & Spies", the whole experience builds naturally and narratively while offering some key moments for the floor along the way. Genuinely unique.

  1. Don't Use My Cell (5:11)
  2. Rozecranz (5:41)
  3. Gettin Hold (6:03)
  4. Fantastisch (5:09)
Review: Hungarian duo Monkz team up with Simba for another fine episode of Gamm, the home of some of the finest deep house around. "Don't Use My Cell" is a soulful little house joint with a sad, bluesy kind of feel, and "Rozencranz" follows suit with another sexy splurge of vocoder voices and sweet-ass melodies. "Getting Hold", on the flip, dusts its fine percussive punch amid utterly hummable vocals and Simba's rapping; "Fantastisch" closes the EP off with another glitchy, finely tuned deep house banger boasting a blazingly off-kilter groove for the heads.

  1. Pharoah Sanders - "You've Got To Have Freedom" (Opolopo Tweak) (7:11)
  2. Roy Ayers - "We Live In Brooklyn Baby" (Opolopo Tweak) (6:06)
Review: The latest missive on GAMM is something of a biggie. It features two superb reworks of classic cuts by Pharoah Sanders and Roy Ayers courtesy of Opolopo, a house producer whose cuts always have plenty of synth-fired funk and lashings of soul. He brilliantly transforms Sanders' "You've Got To Have Freedom" into a rubbery, Latin-tinged house number, underpinning the original jazz cut - complete with righteous vocals and killer trumpet solos - with an ace new bassline and beefed-up beats. He takes a different approach on his revision of Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", re-casting it as a rolling and chunky house number full of suspenseful string parts, twinkling pianos and Ayers' titular vocal.

  1. All Good Things (6:00)
  2. Reach Out A Hand (7:29)
Review: Previously seen (and heard) on Whiskey Disco, Barefoot Beats and Basic Fingers, Toronto twosome The Patchouli Brothers have crossed the Atlantic and set up home on G.A.M.M. As the title suggests, this is the first in a series of re-edit EPs for the storied Swedish imprint. First up is "All Good Things", a fine re-arrangement of an obscure disco gem that comes loaded with sweeping strings, soulful vocals, killer grooves, Chic style guitar riffs and just the right amount of spacey synthesizer action. Over on the flip, they work their magic on a bustling cut that sits somewhere between the sumptuousness of Philadelphia International releases and eighties disco-funk.

  1. Fuqua & James (6:39)
  2. Peace, Love & Understanding (7:17)
Review: US re-edit crew The Patchouli Brothers return to Sweden's Gamm with two more reworked dancefloor cuts from days gone by. On the A, you'll find the exuberant 'Fuqua & James' with its sweeping strings, brass fanfares and falsetto "I'm so grateful" vocal - the track being a rejig of Sylvester's 'Grateful' from 1978 that, somewhat unusually, is quite a bit slower than the original. In comparison, the B's 'Peace, Love & Understanding' mines velvet-suited mid-70s soul a la Barry White or Joe Simon for its source material, but is every bit as upbeat and danceable as the A-side.

  1. Blame It On The Groove (2:45)
  2. San Francisco (3:41)
Review: Swedish contemporary groovesmiths Pomona Dream return with their first prominent release since their debut album "Rainbow Milk". Coming on strong on the mighty G.A.M.M, "Blame It On The Groove" sits somewhere between deep house and classic disco thanks to some belting strings and handclaps midway. "San Francisco" on the flip takes us deeper into the dance as a fully electronic piece with strutting synths, skippy beats and trippy textures running in parallel with Sandra Bang's smoky vocals. Live the dream.

  1. Pick 'Em Up (PPA Rediscode) (4:21)
  2. Cali' 76 (PPA rework) (3:03)
Review: Almost a year to the day since their last essential re-edit outing, Prescription Pricing Authority returns to G.A.M.M. with two more floor-friendly slabs of contemporary scalpel science. A-side "Pick 'Em Up" is a rolling, filter-sporting revision of a down-low disco-funk classic rich in bouncy pianos, soaring female chorus vocals, metronomic drums and punchy horns. It sounds like a peak-time monster in the making, which is never a bad thing. They up the tempo on flipside edit "Cali '76", a tidy, DJ-friendly rearrangement of a horn-sporting chunk of polyrhythmic jazz-funk that boasts some suitably spacey synth solos and horn lines sharper than your average razor.

  1. 1-2-1 (PPA rework) (4:15)
  2. Lucky Duck (PPA rework) (4:32)
Review: GAMM has been responsible for some killer re-edits over the years, though we're struggling to think of any that are quite as good as Prescription Pricing Authority's killer tweak of Carlos Ramanos's "1-2-1". Noticeably heavier and crisper than the original, the rearrangement utilizes a touch of delay at crucial moments and wisely makes more of the fantastic bassline and percussion breaks. Speaking of ace basslines, you'll find a heavy dose of slap bass on the flip, where PPA turns his or her hand to Kathryn Moses's flute-sporting jazz-funk wig-out, "Lucky Duck". It is, of course, killer, though lacks the sheer celebratory rush of the on-point A-side.

"Down Comes The Rain" struts with a Princely vibe and a piano-slapping flare that'll have your floor dancing for well over 17 days. Review: UK label G.A.M.M. are back with label staple Simbad (aka SMBD), whose work and music has built him a solid reputation worldwide, making him a very sought after producer and DJ. On his newest offering, we hear him serving up some surefire edits of classics to those that know. On the A side, a resplice of the Sun Ra classic "Space Is The Place" (SMBD Gospel Shakedown) which hones in on the core of this timeless jam's infectious groove, plus some some additional touches. On the flip, he turns his deft hand to the romantic soul number "We Need Love" by Elder Jeffrey Roberson & The New Life Singers, blessing us with a life-affirming edit.

Review: Milano heavyweight producer Turbojazz known for his stuff on Local Talk, G.A.M.M, CT-HI and more. He is also a member of Jaxx Madicine together with Parker Madicine returns with an infectious classic afro-funk release containing two high energy reworks of Manu Dibango and Fela. Peak time stuff! On the A side we have the sleazy exotic '70s funk of "The New Bell" while on the flip, you are treated to the jazz-funk laced trip of "Fight To Finish" where the drummer does his best impression of Jab'o Starks blending together an early funk and hip-hop rhythm.
