It features two r&b classics, the dancefloor-ready 'Last Night' and the soulful 'Don't Break Your Promises', both originally released on the Rainbow label in the UK and a long-time bastion of Aitken's mastery of blending Jamaican and British influences. The opener draws from The Mar-Keys and Georgie Fame, showcasing r&b's imprint on Aitken's style. Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Review: Both of these funk gems are taken from a cult compilation Trans Groove Express, which explored the sounds of Express Records and was assembled by MURO. Fourth Wave now serve them up on a superb 7", starting with Maki Asakawa. 'Hohi Hitotsu' is a delightfully gentle and subtle dub with funky guitars adding movement while the sultry vocal soars. Yasuhiro Abe's 'Night Fish' is a brighter and more retro 80s soul and boogie sound with glowing chords and snappy hits. The Japanese language vocal is emotive enough to mean plenty without understanding the meaning of the words.

Review: The BDQ duo were in the studio 25 years ago working on these tracks but never quite finished them due to life changes like marriage and kids. Recently, while revisiting old tapes, they discovered a lost tape and decided to give it another listen. They liked what they heard and after a bit of effort to transfer the tracks, they now feel the time has come for a vinyl release. Side 1 features their version of Timebox's 'Beggin'' with vocals by Sarah Orpen and Bryn Barklam laying down some killer Hammond sounds. Side 2 presents their take on the Mirettes' 'Take Me For a Little While' with more stellar vocals from Sarah.

Review: Get your hips and heart around this bit of L.A. boogie by the elusive Ben White and you cannot help but feel better. It is a highly sought-after rarity that disco collectors have been fawning over since forever. It was originally reissued as a 45 by the great Athens of the North and now comes this 7" version which was sourced from Andy Noble, who has often helped the label out before. It features two sides of exceptional modern soul and boogie that blend rhythm and grove in magical ways that are never going to age. 'I See A World' has lovely and tender falsetto vocals and 'Give Me Love (Always)' is more of a party starter.

Review: Having played a slew of inimitable and unforgettable television comedy characters over the past decade or so, from Toast of London's Stephen Toast to Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd, Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh and Todd Rivers in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, you could be forgiven for expecting Matt Berry to use songwriting and music as another form of hilarious release. That's definitely not the case. There's plenty of release on I Gotta Limit, but this is anything other than satire. The first new music to come from Berry's 2025 album, Heard Noises, the two tracks here are pure joy, authentic and genuinely impressive on a technical level. Exchanging lines in a duet with Kitty Liv for the titular number, the vibe is part Northern Soul, part psych rock, and pretty much all completely captivating.

Review: If you like your jazz mystical and spaced out then you're on the right page with this one. The Blackhole label returns with a sixth self-titled offering that is buy on sight. 'More Love Songs' has whimsical leads disappearing off into the cosmic ether over mic jazz-funk drums with some breezy vocals finishing it in style. 'Searching The Circle' then take off on another carefree and breezy groove with far-sighted melodies and gorgeous vocal harmonies that melt you to your core. Beautiful stuff.

Review: Brother II was an exceptional synth-boogie band in the early 1980s that were formed by, ahem, brothers J. and M. Soso. Their track 'You Was Born' stands as a real gem of of the era that cooly embodies the essence of boogie funk when synths defined the musical landscape. Review: This track was originally released on a rare 7" in the mid-70s and later became the title track of Bobby Byrd's 1993 album. Dubbed 'Soulbrother #1' by Fred Wesley, soulful and funky legend Bobby Byrd rediscovered the track while at Soulciety Records in Hamburg. When the album On the Move (I Can't Get Enough) debuted in 1994, it became a surprise hit that was widely celebrated by rare groove fans and hip hop fans alike, all of whom who admired Bobby's work and his collaborations with James Brown. Review: Cash Money Experience are soul dons and if you need proof listen no further than this new 7". Darryl Howard is the vocalist and songwriter of Nu'rons and here he offers up the lead vocals while Emanuel Campbell, who is one of his co-members in Nu'rons, is responsible for the lyrics. On the extended version of 'Outside Looking In' the vocals convey plenty of pain on nice laidback drums and funky riffs. The Full Radio Edit distils things to a shorter play length but is just as effective.

'Don't Like You Anymore' and 'Here When You're Ready' are from her upcoming album Reasons To Stay. The A-side is a mid-tempo gospel funk track with booming drums and basslines, perfect for the dancefloor. The B-side then offers a smooth mid-tempo soul vibe that enriches your heart. Review: Sam Cooke's iconic civil rights anthem 'A Change Is Gonna Come' was deservingly named one of Rolling Stone's greatest songs of all time and this year it celebrates its 60th anniversary. To honour the milestone is this limited edition 7" white iridescent vinyl featuring the original mono single mixes of that as well as 'Shake'. Recorded in January 1964 and included on Cooke's Ain't That Good News, the single was released posthumously in December 1964 just two weeks after Cooke's death as the B-side to the Top 10 hit 'Shake.' It remains as relevant as ever.

Review: The Extra Soul Perception label held a first ever writing camp in Nairobi in 2019 and Lynda Dawn was one of the pupils. She has already released 'Roses' on the label's New Tangents...Vol. 1 EP with other music from the UK, Kenya and Uganda. But this was the standout track so now it makes its way to its own 7". It is the sort of heart achingly beautiful slow motion disco-soul that will be perfect end of the night send home or early evening warm up for more cosy dance floors. There is a slightly more beefed up version from XL Middleton to complete this tidy 7".

Review: Emerging from Southside Richmond, USA, The Deadbeats started as a teen garage band with a soulful edge. In 1966, they recorded their first single at the low-fi Richmond Sound Stages, self-released on the Greenedeem label. Over the next year, the band matured, shedding their stage makeup and refining their sound. In 1967, they travelled to Philadelphia to re-record 'No Second Chance' in a professional studio and created a polished garage-soul classic on Strata Records. Despite its energy, the release faded into obscurity during the Summer of Love but now gets reissued as a one-sided 7".

Review: Ron Hardy's legacy lives on though stories of his legendary DJ sets but also his seemingly endless catalogue of edits and reworks of the tunes he played in his heyday. Here we have another such exhibit in which he flips some classic disco. The original version of 'No Way Back' is riddled with picked guitar licks and dreamy keys while a funky low end moves on this disco-rock gem as brass bursts out for added oomph. Hardy ups the pace, twists it beyond this realm and adds big drum breaks that are Prue bit for dancers. It's a classic in its own right that gets regular plays by more bold and eclectic DJs.

Originally recorded in 2004, 'Loving You Is All I Wanna Do' appeared on the Luv's Fire CD Maxi Single and later on a full album in 2006 through Coastal Records but now debut on vinyl thanks to Soul Direction. On the flip side, Lewzarius' 'Step Up" shines as a rich collaboration between Campbell and Haran Griffin, who is best known for 'Movin' Much Too Fast.' Atlanta-born Lewzarius recorded this track during his time at Coastal Records in the late 90s.

Review: Before making it big with Maze, Frankie Beverly was the man behind Raw Soul, a heavyweight, politically conscious band whose fuzzy, full-throttle sound sat somewhere between the J.B's and Sly & The Family Stone. The band's most famous moment was 1975 single 'Color Blind', which was originally recorded as 'What's The Color?' Here that never-before-heard recording is finally issued. Rich in fuzz-soaked horns, crunchy drum-breaks, weighty bass and clipped funk guitar licks, the track features some superb, James Brown style lead vocals from Beverly. Brilliantly, there's also a chance to savour the unheard Raw Soul instrumental version, which features an extended, DJ-friendly drum solo midway through. Review: Silky by name, silky by nature: this reissue is a wonderfully soulful sound by Silky Hargraves originally released in 1966 on the Dearborn label. The single's A-side is it up with some sumptuous string stabs. It has raw, emotive production and hard-hitting soul-funk drums, big brass and a deep, buttery vocal from Hargraves. And the B-side 'You're Too Good (To Me Baby)' is no less powerful and all-consuming which makes this reissue a real doozy for fans of these sorts of classic vintage soul sounds.

Review: Ron Henderson is the North Carolina-based singer-songwriter who, along with his group Choice of Colour, released their sole album Soul Junction in 1976. This now mad rare record has fetched prices over $800 at auctions which prompted a 2020 reissue by P Vine which quickly sold out. Recently discovered, the 1983 hit single 'Gemini Lady' which was included as a bonus track on that reissue was an alternate take, not the original. Consequently, P-VINE decided to reissue the single in its authentic form. As such this formerly hard-to-find 7" single is reissued and replicates the original label design making it a must-cop.

The A-side reimagines Frankie Valli's classic with a laid-back reggae twist while the B-side takes on Crystal Waters' '90s dance anthem with surprising charm. Infused with a subtle Shibuya-kei flair, both covers feel fresh yet timeless. The Waters rendition, in particular, sounds like a forgotten folk tune-so natural it's hard to believe it wasn't always this way. A breezy, nostalgic delight from a band overdue for global recognition.

Review: The Jackson Sisters are next up on the latest 45 from Tower Vinyl, which has in recent times done a superb job of serving up some timeless and effective vintage soul sounds from across different niches and eras. This one kicks off with the well high energy sound of 'Miracles' with its big vocals, bigger drums and raw horns that are well known to cinema goers everywhere. 'Boy You're Dynamite' is a more raw and emotive sound with a striped back rhythm but superbly gut wrenching vocal deliveries.

Review: Soul-Direction presents the first legitimate re-release of this bona-fide soul rarity which has been licensed courtesy of Resnik Music Group. The track was recorded by King George and The Fabulous Souls and was originally released in the late 60s and early 70s in Los Angeles, where it became a quick favourite on the soul scene. 'I Need You' and its counterpart 'Baby I've Got It' were both written and produced by lead vocalist "King" George Renfro. Despite little information on Renfro or the group, the song became a sought-after gem after being championed by DJ Ion Tsakalis in the 80s.

The A-side, 'Be A Witness,' features Nicole's soaring vocals gliding over deep drum machines and Nick Movshon's funky bass which makes it a smooth mid-tempo groove about destined love and good vibes. Review: Keith Lawrence is a DJ and producer from Brixton in South London with plenty of credentials, and here he serves up a pair of refixes of 'I Don't Know What It Is But Keep That Light Shining On Me', a reggae jam with an edge. The first one is laden with hooky guitar riffs and has soaring call-and-response vocals expanding the sound up top. The second is more raw and a little stripped back with a focus on the timeless rhythms and sounds. Two tunes that demand to be played loud and with bass - obviously - pushed to the max.

Review: Like many of the best tunes from the Northern Soul era, this is a revered gem and a highly sought-after original which has been known to trade hands for well over 2000 English pounds. As such it is extremely collectible with both sides offering up monster tracks. 'Love Finds A Way' is a big raw lung buster with snappy drums and lush harmonies adding plenty of soulful warmth. On the flipside, 'I Need Some Loving' is another big one with all the right textures, rhythms and hooky vocals.

Review: In 1961, producer David Rick discovered Vito and The Salutations, a Brooklyn harmony group of Italian, Irish and Jewish teenagers. Their energetic doo-wop take on 'Unchained Melody' became a hit until the British Invasion shifted the music scene. 'Hey There' remained unreleased until Rick's 1981 double album which compiled their singles and rare collector cuts after years of misrepresentation and a court battle with a copycat group. In 2020, Monster Mike unearthed The Long Island Sound's unreleased 1969 demo of 'Hey There' which was recorded before the band dissolved. Now, Oracion Records drops this forgotten gem on 45.

Review: We're excited by this fresh repress from the fine folks at PVine because it brings back to life an iconic cut from the widely beloved Hawaiian AOR album Lui. This classic gentle sound is also known for its stunning artwork and has long been a fav of collectors and diggers. Review: Leroy Hutson is an American singer and songwriter revered by lovers of soul, dub and r&b. He's dropped countless hits which have long been favourites of deep crate diggers, and for this one, he switched things up quite literally in terms of the alias he used. The tunes are as killer as always with 'Butter Fat' pairing some free jazz melody with twisted funky basslines and organic percussion over funky drums. On the flip, 'Feel The' gets more soulful and laced with melody as big energy comes from the piano vamps. Two killers.
