Remixes (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: SNKR 014. Rel: 10 Jul 18
  1. Gone Too Soon (Sully remix) (6:30)
  2. Limit Of Paradise (Falty DL remix) (5:37)
Review: Sneaker Social Club are not messing around! Following their previous outings from the legendary trio 2 Bad Mice comes remixes from two impeccably forward thinking break crafters; Sully takes "Gone Too Soon" into some fantastical places as the breaks scream jungle but the big breeze pads scream Alex Reece but both elements work together emotively. Falty DL, meanwhile, gives us a hardcore schooling on "Limit Of Paradise" with its heavily layered breaks, wall of sound pads and dynamic drops into spacious hooks. Bad to the (clear vinyl) bone!

  2. 30Hz - "Bytecon" (T-Wrex remix)
Review: Remixes by 30Hz & DJ Quest. "Robots Ready From Mars" is tackled by Quest who gives the track a heavier, clubby breakbeat mix. Fits nicely next to tracks from the likes of The Stanton Warriors or Tayo.

  3. Cuts (0:04)
Review: Long-time turntablist, erstwhile Christine band member and recent 45 Live crew member, North French Aeon Seven delivers his first ever 45. A loose-swinging, wah wah-rattling, organ-blasting feel good b-boy bomb with all the cheeky chops and cuts you'd expect from a deck wizard of his calibre, "Seven Breaks" is primed for party and battling devastation. Complete with a creative DJ acapella scratch cut, this 45 is alive.

White Hot (7")
Cat: JAL 287V. Rel: 15 Nov 18
  1. Basement Freaks - "White Hot" (feat Kylie Auldist - Basement Freaks remix) (3:39)
  2. John Turrell - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Basement Freaks remix) (4:20)
Review: Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

  4. Lastrack - "Axel Phif" (part 2) (5:30)
  5. Jean Redondo - "Gen" (5:01)
Review: More spatial exorcisms from the BFDM family. New and old faces alike, all French, it's the label's broadest and heaviest V/A wax to date. Basses Terres takes us deep in the machine with a well oiled slo-mo pneumatic break, Comic Sans-slinger C.R.K cooks up a spicy gumbo of militant apocalypse electro while Jonquera continues the electroid theme with a devilish pitched snare roll and wry synth slap bass pops and twang. Elsewhere Lastrack insists we travel to Jupiter by way of the Amazon while Daxyl's Jean Redondo closes the show on a schizoid broken techno freak out. Stark.

Razor/Predators (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HILEVRECS 001. Rel: 15 Oct 18
  1. Razor
  2. Predators
Review: Bristol-based badman Borai has been quietly issuing some of the city's most immense club wreckers for many years now, sometimes in partnership with October, and sometimes flying solo (as on the crucial Anybody From London for Hotline Recordings). Here he's inaugurating Higher Level with some absolute dance slayers, kicking off with the mammoth pitched-down drum funk and gut-wrenching bass of "Razor" before switching stance for the dreamier but no less rowdy "Predators." Both cuts are a masterclass in classic breakbeat science, delivering the foundational UK sound with panache that sets these weapons far apart from the rest of the pack.

Make Me/No Good (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HILEVRECS 002. Rel: 23 Apr 19
  1. Make Me (5:01)
  2. No Good (4:15)
Review: Big tune alert! Ever since Borai and Denham Audio joined forces to self-release the rave-minded "Club Glow Vol 1" cassette last summer, hype has been growing around "Make Me". The track has been getting spins from big name DJs close to the duo ever since, with much fevered speculation online as to whether it would ever get a single release. Happily, the pair has obliged. For those who've yet to succumb to its full-throttle charms, "Make Me" is a joyous early '90s rave throwback rich in period vocal samples, bouncy piano stabs, sweaty breakbeats and the kind of sub-bass that regular sends crowds crazy. Flipside "No Good", a fresh jam from the retro-futurist duo, is similarly smiling, giddy and bass-heavy. Pass the Vicks - it's time to party!

  1. Akman's Rhythm (6:43)
  2. Old Hands (7:46)
  3. Anaconda Legs (5:24)
  4. A Moment To Breathe (7:09)
Review: Caldera has been previously spotted on WNCL Recordings amongst other establishments, so you know he comes with a certain stamp of quality for rough and tumble hi-jinx in the more interesting corners of proper party music. He lands on the blossoming Boogie Box label with a diverse package that leads in with the percussive trysts of "Akman's Rhythm" and then swerves into the fractured minimal dub exercise "Old Hands". "Anaconda Legs" is a twitchy, atmospheric slow strutting house cut that sits right with the offbeat minimal crowd but actually sports a rich and expressive sound and FX palette. "A Moment To Breathe" blows up the dub touches across the EP and goes into full head-nodding meditation mode, and it's fantastic.

High Hill (12")
Cat: WHITELOOPS 3. Rel: 24 Mar 17
  1. High Hill (7:36)
  2. The Spirit (7:24)
Review: Elusive producer Disk has been busy of late, delivering two low-key - but also highly regarded - EPs in the last few months. This latest 12", which also appears via his Whiteloops imprint, boasts another two tried-and-tested dancefloor treats. First up is "High Hill", a bustling chunk of rolling dancefloor voodoo built around chunky deep house drums, flash-fried samples and fluttering tech-house flourishes. He takes a totally different approach on the B-side, paying tribute to the dreamy chords, loved-up breadowns and skittering breakbeats of early British hardcore productions. It sounds like 808 State's "Pacific" was a major influence, though the breaks on Disk's production boast a much funkier swagger.

  1. Electrian (6:53)

  3. Uforia (5:16)
  4. Galazy (5:10)
Review: Since bursting on to the scene with three superb singles in 2017, Armand Jakobsson AKA DJ Seinfeld has been surprisingly quiet. In fact, the "Galazy EP" is only his second single since. We can happily confirm that he's in fine form, though, gleefully between the dreamy electro/breakbeat/ambient techno fusion of opener "Electrian", the cut-up hip-hop breaks and lo-fi electronics of "Mono Melo", the hot-stepping, sub-heavy growl of EP standout "Uforia" and the mid-tempo breakbeat retro-futurism of closer "Galazy". The latter track boasts a unique combination of hip-house style breakbeats, whistling new age synth melodies and the kind of mind-mangling sub-bass more readily associated with 1990 style UK techno.

Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

  1. Hectic (6:16)
  2. Rave Safe (5:52)
  3. Fields (5:08)
  4. Feel It (5:10)
Review: The latest missive from Russian imprint Private Persons comes courtesy of Formally Unknown, a bass-obsessed duo who won plenty of plaudits for last year's "Off Peak EP" on Dusky's 17 Steps label. Their love of weighty, bowel-bothering sub-bass comes to the fore on opener "Hectic", a clandestine stepper rich in metallic percussion hits, rumbling low end frequencies and watery, dubbed out electronic motifs. The sense of foreboding continues on the pulsating peak-time creepiness of "Rave Safe", while "Fields" sees them pepper an off kilter two-step rhythm with glassy-eyed chords, ear-catching bleeps and wonky percussion fills. Fittingly, the pair finishes with an inspired flourish via "Feel It", a rush-inducing breakbeat cut that recalls the glory years of British rave music.

Review: Ghosts In The Machine are the attackers on this Monotone release with some in your face electrocore madness. On the a-side appears the much anticipated and overdue release of "We Own The Algorithms" where we find solid drum programming and a powerful vocoder chorus. The b-side features two more bombs starting with "Merciless Killing Machines" which is a GITM favourite at live shows, finally put down on wax for official release. Last and certainly not least is "Inside The Kill Box" and you could say the best comes last with this unique electro killer. Ghosts In The Machine drops their sophomore EP and shows they are a force to be reckoned with.

Review: Perennial party boosters, Breakbeat Paradise dive into spring with a fire quartet of modern funk. With bands repping across Europe, it's a global groove affair as longstanding German funkateers buss up big boogie hooks on "Get On Down", Swiss soulboys Grand Mothers Funck up the tempo with the sweaty floor-focussed groove of "The Dog" and Nasa Funk fly the p-funk flag so hard and proud they need a new pole. UK's A Man About A Dog rips up the finale with a scratched-out Latin heater. Original.

The Melbournians present Perth's Hamish Rahm aka Hame DJ, whose Dog Swamp EP features three tracks carefully constructed for the discerning disc jockey. Enjoy the throwback sounds of '90s rave on "LL", the frantic yet rather evocative electro bass of the title track and "Exe" which goes for that classic West Yorkshire techno sound of yesteryear.

Review: Given that it's been five years since Shed man Rene Pawlowitz last put out a Head High record, this expansive new EP feels like a genuine event release - in techno circles, at least. Interestingly, he seems to have packed away the banging, piano-driven techno thumpers of old, instead delivering a quintet of cuts that explore a wider range of interconnected old school influences. "Set Me Free", for example, sees the experienced producer wrap rush-inducing chords and distant female vocal samples around a deep but booming, hardcore-influenced groove, while closing set "Hardcore" sits somewhere between vintage UK rave music and the polyrhythmic exploits of Livity Sound and Hodge. Other highlights include the off-kilter, head-in-the-clouds shimmer of "Virtual Girl" and the ghostly broken techno snappiness of "Higher The Break".

Review: The Incredible Bongo Band were a loose studio collective interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion .They are of course most famous for their ultimate b-boy classic version of "Apache". This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

  1. Overthrow (7:10)

Review: UK tech house hero Burnski has been serving up some serious heat of late under the Instinct alias, channelling that old school UK vibe of drum & bass, speed garage and 2-step. His exploration into these styles bring about this sixth instalment of his eponymous series with 3 cuts set to cause havoc on dancefloors this year. A side cut "Overthrow" rides on a slick tech house groove before moving into a swing-fuelled rhythm and razor-sharp sub-bass and it's business as usual. On the flip, shadowy stepper "Phased" fuses Artful Dodger's classic swagger with the dark sci-fi aesthetic of Ed Rush & Optical. Finally, put your lighters up for the furious junglist roller that is "Free Life".
