DJ Hell Presents My Definition Of House (Part 3)
  1. 33 1/3 Queen - "Searchin'"
  2. Earth People - "Reach Up To Mars"
Review: With this the 3rd instalment of Hell's my definition of house 12" series, two new massive Gigolo old-school tracks are resurrected for the pleasure of a modern listening public. In 1986, three young DJs began making music on a 4-track recorder in a Baltimore basement studio. Little did they know at the time that more than 15 years later they would be viewed as pioneers of American dance music. 33 1/3 Queen (aka Basement Boys aka Jay Ateinhour, Reddy Souglas, and Thommy Davis) took samples of A Guy Called Gerald's classic "Blow Your House Down" (originally released in 1988) and made their single "Searchin'" which quickly turned out to be an underground club favourite. To date, the boys have remixed songs such esteemed acts as Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, The Shamen, Angie Stone, Lenny Kravitz and Paula Abdul. In addition, they continue to expose and nurture new talents on their own label, Basement Boys Records, which was established in 1995. The Basement Boys have been responsible for some of clubland's biggest anthems and their hit "Searchin'" is as relevant today as it was ten years ago. Earth People's (aka Pal Joey) house masterpiece reach up to mars originally released in 1990 on Underworld Records finally gets a re-issue on Gigolo Records. The original with its monster drums shuffling guitars synth stabs great use of vocal samples and incredible production skills still withstands the test of time sounding like it could have been made yesterday. This is classic material here that will destroy any dancefloor!! House maestro Pal Joey released this tune, a funky cross-pollination of garage classics from Toney Lee ("Reach Up") and Dexter Wansel ("Life On Mars"), in 1990, and you have to thank Hell for making it available now once again to a 2006 audience. There's a fine line between classic and dated. Hell knows this well and selects only for his 12" series "My Definition Of House" those which were groundbreaking when they first appeared and still sound hot to 21st century ears. So keep your mind and ears open, for you never know what Hell will dig up from the basement next. Stay tuned for "My Definition Of House part 4"!

  1. That Lonely Night (4:54)

  3. Moonshiner (7:00)
  4. Are You Mesmerized? (7:11)
Review: Stockholm based Ari Bald is up next for Better Listen after inaugurating Honey Butter Records last year with that great release. He keeps on with that deep disco spirit with these four funky and lo-slung jams. On the A side, we have two ergonomic edits in the form of "That Lonely Night" and "Enchantress" respectively which are looped to perfection with some somewhat familiar hooks that gradually build up to that drop! That's where the thumping kick comes charging in and it's sure geared for maximum dancefloor dynamics. On the flip, get ready for the funk explosion that is "Moonshiner" or what could be your First Choice (mind the pun!) in the form of the smooth and sexy late night groove of "Are You Mesmerized?"

Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.

They Can't Understand It
Cat: GO 060V. Rel: 13 Nov 19
  1. They Can't Understand It (Louie Vega Roots NYC remix) (11:00)
  2. They Can't Understand It (9:21)
Review: As far as funky house power partnerships go, how about Bobby & Steve and Byron Stingily teaming up, with Louie Vega on remix duties? As you might expect, this record is teeming with soulful, gospel-powered vibes, next level musicianship and Stingily's eternally life-affirming voice at the centre of the storm. Louie Vega's "Roots NYC Remix" of "They Can't Understand It" is a sure shot of club ready perfection - a super tight rhythm section, all the coolest parts looped up and a sweet bass groove to lock on to. However Bobby & Steve's original production is an irrepressible burst of joy, all overheating organs and huge chorus lines, massive drum fills and funky clav - it's maximal to the max and bold enough to reach the stars.

  1. Bubbles The Pimp - "Winterunamerican" (5:48)
  2. Nelly Wilson - "Trapped & Confused" (4:47)
  3. Pierre Pressure - "Love & Beyond" (5:58)
Review: The Dessert Island Discs series continues with yet more arch remixes from across the disco and boogie spectrum. Bubbles The Pimp kicks off the A side with a tasteful treatment of Gil Scott Heron's "Winter In America," which gets rustled up into a sweet and sassy house number with a cheeky acid b-line underneath. Nelly Wilson whips up a storm on the tightly clipped, peak time-oriented "Trapped & Confused". Pierre Pressure's "Love & Beyond" takes it easy on the B side with plenty of fluttering synth wobbles to offset the choppy funk of the guitar - it's a cosmically enhanced floor burner to get you all astral under the collar.

Review: Kerri Chandler is one of house music's ever present stars. As each new generation discovers his music it comes back to the fore and sounds as good as it did 30 years ago. The man has more classic EPs than you've had comedowns, and Bar A Them is right up there with the best of them. Out features the creepy vibes of low slung rider "Bar A Thym" which traps you in a state of unresolved and keeps you there masterfully. "Sunshine & Twilight" is a more classic Kerri sound, with jazzy chords and keys, sunshine vibes and musicality to spare. His famous kick drums, of course, also also ever present.

  1. Crowns Of Glory - "Lord, Look At Your People" (Joaquin Joe Claussell mix) (5:48)
  2. Keith Barrow - "A World Of Lonely People" (Joaquin Joe Claussell mix) (7:37)
Review: If the rich history of US gospel soul, funk and disco gets your juices flowing, you need this new 12" from Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell in your life. As with many of the storied producer's edit-focused 12" singles, it has been pressed in limited quantities and should therefore be grabbed before all the copies disappear. On the A-side he offers up a tidy, dancefloor-focused tweak of Crowns of Glory's hard-to-find 1976 gospel soul cut "Lord, Look At Your People", brilliantly teasing out the intro before unleashing the song in all its inspiring righteousness. Over on the flip Clausell turns his attention to the Clavinet-heavy, Blaxploitation-era gospel disco anthem that is Keith Barrow's equally as inspired 1977 gem "A World Of Lonely People".

  1. Roll Of The Beast (4:38)

  3. Roll Of The Beast (Atjazz remix - instrumental) (6:12)
Review: Those with long memories may just about remember Clyde. The East Midlands-based vocalist and producer released a clutch of soul-flecked fusions of deep house, broken beat, jazz, hip-hop and Detroit techno on Mantis Recordings between 2003 and 2009. Here his final single, 2009's previous digital-only "Roll The Beast", is given a belated vinyl release courtesy of his old pal Martin "Atjazz" Iveson. This time round, the original version - an inventive chunk of purple-coloured, glitch-sporting vocal deep house that portrays Clyde as Derby's answer to Prince - comes accompanied by two slick remixes (vocal and instrumental passes) from Iveson. His takes are deep, groovy, organic and fluid, with plenty of the spacey "astro" style flourishes we've come to expect from his tracks and remixes.

  3. All You Need Is House (Milty Evans Whitebeard mix)
  4. All You Need Is House (Ty'z classic dub)
Review: Tyree Cooper's All You Need Is House EP is a proud celebration of the genre, done Chicago style and rammed home by Marco's wailing vocals. Through solid drums and strong vocal hooks, Cooper's original beats down hard justifying the need for a 180g pressing. It rattles and hums until dropping into a tom-drum and snare solo similar to Runaway's "Brooklyn Club Jam". Bobby Starr's mix brings Marco's Teddy Pendergrass-sung vocals to the fore, while Milty Evans gets a little techier with a cut up approach, adding white noise flashes and lots of filterwerk. Cooper second take comes via a "classic dub" which draws a link between squelchy baile funk and a Masters At Work drum track.

  3. Party People (MDFC remix) (4:46)
Review: Unquantize marks a quite remarkable 200th release with this throwback house gem from Crystal Waters, who is, of come, best known for her seminal tune 'Gypsy Woman'. Here she works with the stalwart that is DJ Spen for a hands in the air tune that has her own rich vocals boring up top of a 90s bassline. The drums are warm, the claps well designed, the mood is pure party. Next to the standout original, Chicago heavyweight Mike Dunn delivers a fine BlackBall Remix and techno titan Carl Cox & Eric Powell also step up under their MDFC guise.

Review: Second 12" remixes for now classic "Fuckin Track" from Da Fresh (the hit of the French DJ/producer, present on more than thirty compilations all around the world). After the success of the first 12" remixes (by Kiko and Da Fresh himself, sold at 6000 copies), this time at the menu a remix by famous French DJ Jack De Marseille with a powerful rock 'n' roll and breakbeat flavour, a "Saturday Night Special" remix by Muttonheads, a most classical electro house remix by south of France duet Delon & Dalcan and a more classical mental techno by young French hope Jeremie Hirsch. A real plus for this ultra efficient track and a real happiness for DJs...

Review: Three years after their last collaboration 'Lost In Translation', French producer Darius and Nigerian singer Wayne Snow cross paths once again for two sublime moments of contemporary soul. Trembling with echoes of Thundercat and Plant Life, Wayne's high notes are the perfect complement to Darius's dreamy signature as 'Equilibrium' shows off their penchant for hazy house music while 'Apology' takes more of a sedate, breezy stroll in a similar way to Amp Fiddler. Also included is a stunning instrumental from Darius ('Sonar') and an extended version of 'Equilibrium'. Soulful perfection.

For their 4th 12" they tap in a cast of locals and friends from across the globe for this 4 track EP. Review: The latest Hands Off joint features three artists making waves in intriguing corners of the deep house firmament. Desos opens up the A side with the dreamy groove of "Dubs", before Space Age lays down the classic, Mr Fingers-flavoured haze of "Sunday Rain". Desos returns on the flip with another subtle yet punchy cut, keeping the melodies submerged and sublime on "Jaaa" before Common Mode takes things in a distinctly dubby direction with "Beauty Queens".

Review: While many of Disclosure's EPs have tended to focus on festival-ready and radio-friendly numbers, "Ecstasy" has both eyes firmly on club dancefloors. Proof arrives via the surging title track, a filter-sporting bumper that offers distinctive nods towards late '90s "French Touch" house and Basement Jazz's superior early work, and the gleefully Afro-disco-flavoured Echo Roosevelt collaboration that follows, stomping summer anthem "Tondo". Elsewhere, they cannily turn Boz Scraggs' blue-eyed soul classic "Lowdown" into a loose-limbed, rubbery house workout on "Expressing What Matters", serve up some chant-along Afro-house hedonism ("Etran") and keep fans of their usual bass-heavy big room flavours happy via wonky closer "Get Close".
