Review: Japanese popstar Anri continues to hear her entire back catalogue reissued - this time we home back in on Bi Ki Ni, her mid-career (1983) city pop opus, which laser-focuses on the romantic tropes of sunsets, beachside flings, and heartfelt goodbyes over cocktails in flight lounges. The coalescing of jazz, funk and disco meshes neatly as Anri glides tightly over each ultra-slick instrumental, with the aptly named 'Good Bye Boogie Dance' being a particularly neat highlight.

Review: For Life Entertainment do well to rerelease yet another bunch of greats from a classic artist working in the Japanese genre of city pop. Along with her album Heaven Beach, Timely!! comes as an LP reissue of the 1983 original album. It's a propulsive jet-setter in the realm of honest 80s J-funk, backed up by weighty production, dynamically swung horn sections and prominent slap bass stylings. Toshiki Kadomatsu's production neatly backs up ANRI's incredible vocal range and dexterity, and without him, perhaps we wouldn't be blessed with the present-day microgrenre that is future funk.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Yaya Bey's forthcoming album Ten Fold is poised to be a continuation of her introspective and socially conscious musical journey. Drawing from the momentum of her previous releases, the album promises to delve deep into Yaya's inner world, exploring themes of identity, creativity, and societal dynamics. Her latest single, 'Chasing the Bus.' shows Yaya's trademark gentle falsetto and reflective lyricism, addressing the feeling of being overlooked and underestimated, both in personal relationships and within the music industry. Through her music, she extends an invitation for listeners to join her on a voyage of self-discovery and resilience.

Never Get Your Love Behind Me (Record Store Day RSD 2024)
Never Get Your Love Behind Me (5:39)
What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin' (2:56)
Review: Valerie Carter, the late Southern California vocalist, is reimagined in a stunning new remake of the Faragher Brothers' 1976 classic, 'Never Get Your Love Behind Me.' This superb outing revives Carter's original 1977 vocals intended for her Columbia Records album, Wild Child. Producer Kathy Kurasch and Carter's sister Jan discovered the unreleased material and paired Carter's isolated vocals with the current Faragher Brothers band. The B-side features a new recording of James Brown's 'What My Baby Needs Now' using Carter's live 1976 performance. This single, which perfectly celebrates Carter's legacy, is available on a 7" vinyl courtesy of Record Store Day 2024.

Review: Blurring lines of psychedelic pop, post-rock and progressive jazz, Club Kuru lay down their exquisite third album Before The World - an album that invites us to imagine what life was, or could have at all been like, "before the world could spin" (the album's instantly affecting lyrical tagline). The London-based pysch outfit, helmed by Laurie Erskine, return here from a five-year hiatus to effectively hazard a pop at the hysterical question, "who am I?" Laurie muses on the inquiry and eponymous song, "As I've got older, like many others, I have moments where I'm overcome with a sense of emptiness and no real purpose - constantly grappling with self-doubt and questioning past and present decisions". Expanding upon, rather than attempting to resist, this fundamental subjective can't-quite-place-it-ness, Before The World finds immediate recourse in sensory experiences - 'Morning Bird', 'Sunshine Kiss The Water', 'Blue Sky', 'Gone Like A Flower' - and flirts with the wordless sense of the end of reality first laid laid down by psych's gargantuan genre twin, post-rock. That said, there are still traces of soul and classic rock in there, making for an effective smorgasbord.

Daniel Crawford/Amber Navran & Stro Elliot - "Slapture" (3:19)
King Most - "Kiss The Girls (& Make Them Cry" (4:24)
Review: This superb new 7" from Private Stock Records is both banging and sexy. The opening side has 'Slapture' and finds Daniel Crawford and Amber Navran flipping an iconic original hip-hop joint and smoothing it out into something that teases and pleases above plenty of slapping Stro Elliot with adds extra allure. On the flip, King Most's 'Kiss The Girls (& Make Them Cry) is a mix of digital synths and languid bass with a lute grove and hooky vocals all working to get you in the mood. Both sides are great additions to your shelves.

Don't Go Kissin' My Baby (3:59)
Review: Edmonton, Canada is the rather unlikely home of the Kimberlite label and super soul gang The Estimations. They are back after a long break with two more modern takes on rare groove, with foot stomping drums and big vocals. The a-side, 'Heart Of Stone,' has fuzzy guitar and a Levi Stubbs that cannot fail to get you up and moving while the haunting backing vocals draw you in deeper. There is also a strong Motown theme on flipside jam 'Don't Go Kissin' My Baby' with a bouncy bubblegum-soul arrangement. It oozes 60s cool and is a bona fide floor filler.

Review: Wairunga is a Kiwi beauty spot that's long been one of the favoured locations for Fat Freddy's Drop to kick back between tours and recording sessions. It's fitting then that the long-serving New Zealand collective have named their new album in its honour. The set itself showcases the band at their very best, delivering their usual attractive fusions of dub, reggae and soul, in which Joe Dukie's effortlessly soulful vocals rise above warming bass, heady electronics, crisp guitars and hazy horns. It's diverse enough to fend off any accusations that they're resting on their laurels, but also familiar enough to please the band's vast army of fans. In other words, it's a Fat Freddy's Drop album, and a rather good one at that.

Review: In 1972, Marvin Gaye set to work recording what was scheduled to become the follow-up to his greatest single studio album, the previous year's "What's Going On". In the end, only one single from that mooted set ever appeared - "You're The Man", a weary assessment of that year's U.S Presidential Election - and Gaye's bitter arguments with Motown continued. This intriguing album tries to set the record straight, gathering together work completed for the shelved album with newly mixed songs based around previously unfinished works. There's much to admire throughout, with the material flitting between the kind of lusciously orchestrated, conscious songs featured on Gaye's previous set and more commercial-sounding Motown pop (much of which was produced by Willie Hutch).

Review: Craft Recordings offer up an in-demand reissue of Joe Henderson's Power To The People, an abiding classic in the domain of New York hard bop, and one of three standouts in Henderson's Milestone Records era, through which the completist listener may chart and increasing political awareness and stylistic horizon-expansion on the artist's behalf. Recorded during a turbulent phase in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Power To The People raises a clenched fist in favour of democracy and equality, whilst at the same time incorporates many an unforeheard sound and instrument for Henderson, from electric piano to bass and enlisting the aid of fusion greats like Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter - all amounting to the jazz equivalent of a revolutionary event, after which nothing would ever be the same.

Review: Japanese nu-jazz doesn't get any more smouldering than this deep cut from Yusuke Hirado featuring Lil Summer on vocal duties. 'Fly Away' is a mellow melter thanks in no small part to the moody strings lingering behind Hirado's fluid funk production. It's a downtempo vibe which calls to mind the UK street soul sound, contrasted by B-side joint 'Dear Limmertz' which has a more jazz funk oriented flavour. Both joints won't let you down when you want to set the mood as smooth as possible - with a seasoned pro like Hirado at the controls, what else would you expect?

Review: Willie Hutch was just 25 years old when he recorded his debut album, Soul Portrait. While he would go on to greater commercial success later in his career, Hutch's first stab at soul success sold relatively poorly on its initial release. Ever since, the album has been in demand with collectors, so this licensed reissue is more than welcome. Sitting somewhere between the horn-heavy soul of Stax, punchy '60s funk and the Motor City stomp of Motown, the 11 featured songs put Hutch's evocative, passionate vocals and heart-felt lyrics at the centre of the action. The result is a classic soul album that has more than stood the test of time.

With tight musicianship and an irresistible groove, 'Witchoo' is an ode to joyful togetherness, perfectly timed for a hot and long summer. Ahead of its time, the track incorporates subtle disco elements, creating a unique downtempo disco feel. Its depth surpasses the often sterile lyrics of typical disco music, enriched by a soulful flute that adds an extra layer of charm. 'Independent Woman' reissue is here so grab a copy before they're gone.

Review: Dewey Kenmore's It's Never Too Late is the ultimate summer jam, bursting with sun-drenched Latin-soul vibes that are sure to lift your spirits. With The Boogaloo Assassins lending their background vocal talents, this track is infused with an extra layer of sweetness, perfectly complementing Dewey's raw vocal stylings. From the first note, you'll be transported to a block-party paradise, where the fire hydrants are open, and popsicles abound. The instrumental on the flip side ensures you can groove all night long. With its soulful and smooth groove, It's Never Too Late is destined to become your go-to anthem for the summer season.

Love To The World (LP version) (4:51)
Love To The World (Joey Negro Mizell Magic mix) (8:36)
Review: 'Love To The World', a sumptuously opulent and heavily orchestrated disco-soul number, transformed the fortunes of L.T.D - and their freshly appointed lead vocalist, Jeffrey Osborne - on its initial release in 1976. Here the full-length version of the track gets the reissue treatment for the first time in a while, with the band's gorgeous original mix (produced by none other than Larry and Fonce Mizzell) being backed by a fresh rub by house master turned disco king Dave Lee. The Z Records founder makes the most of the band's original vocals and instrumentation (admittedly with the addition of splashes of reverb and delay) on a seemingly re-constructed 'Mizzell Magic Mix' that brilliantly stretches out the cut by stripping back the orchestration and other musical elements at key points. It's a genuinely brilliant rework.

Review: Roge emerges as the Samba Super Hero in 'Tropical Man,' an electrifying collaboration with producer Tommy "TNT" Brenneck. Their fusion of samba and soul music is a revelation, captured on the Tropical Man 12" EP. Recorded in one unforgettable night at Diamond West studios in Hollywood, Roge and the Menahan Street Band deliver infectious grooves and heartfelt lyrics. The EP features not only different mixes of 'Tropical Man' but also 'Mis Filos,' an excellent ode to Rog?'s children with a sweet blend of syncopated rhythms and soft-psych vibes. With its irresistible energy and seamless integration of diverse influences, 'Tropical Man' marks Rog?'s international debut in spectacular fashion, leaving listeners eager for more of his unique musical vision.

Review: Teddy Pendergrass is one of soul's all time greats, and his voice practically defines the Philadelphia sound across too many hits to count. There might not be many stones left unturned in reflecting on this titan of Black American music, but venerated New York producer and remix pioneer John Morales is one of the few who was able to take Pendergrass' music to new heights in the disco era. This collection, carefully assembled through Morales' trusted collaborators at BBE, presents some all time classics as they should be heard, mixed to perfection by someone truly bedded into the music.

Review: New reissue of Morcheeba's ninth album; though far from their most defining LP, 'Blaze Away' captures Skye Edwards and co. at a lesser-recognised career highlight, after the departure of co-producer Paul Godfrey. A tripped- and dubbed-out odyssey and ode to positivity, with guest features from Roots Manuva and Amanda Zamolo, and supersoaked in delay and psychey note progressions - you can be sure you won't be disappointed by this latter-day gem from the trip hop pioneers.

Review: Few artists nowadays set out with the intention to bewilder, perahps for fear of losing popularity, but Pale Jay is an exception. The oft misunderstood feeling is the central affective inspiration behind the eponymous new record from the masked London-based soul singer's latest album, which pairs washed-out, totally self-produced, downtempo tropical-sonics against starkly opposed themes of a family's gradual disintegration due to years of avoidance and miscommunication. A retroactive reflection on one artist's personal quest for an identity he could finally feel comfortable with, Bewilderment is, aside from the immediate resonance of its theme, also a testament to Jay's polyvalent talents as an instrumentalist and producer.

As It Was (3:48)
As It Was (instrumental) (3:47)
Review: London retro soul specialists PREP almost feel lost in the 2020s. Everything from their sound, which is pretty unique in today's musical landscape, to release and merchandise artwork screams mid-late-20th Century modernism, owing as much to the crimson and purple-hued aesthetics of classic Miami iconography as anything more recent years have offered us. Meanwhile, aurally speaking, their output straddles lines between funk, soul, synth pop and yacht (those who know, will know), all of which have an ability to conjure strong images of easier, simpler times gone by. 'As It Was', a cover of the Harry Styles pop anthem, takes things into particularly seductive, slap bass and sax infused atmospheres, the air thick with intimate suggestion, which may or may not conjure thoughts of George Michael's 'Careless Whisper' letting loose at a boat party.
