Review: One of this year's Mercury Prize nominees, Wisdom Of Elders sees London saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings hitting a new ambitious high as he recorded the whole body of work with a troupe of South African musicians led by Mandla Mlangeni in one single day. Aptly described as afro-futurism, the collective melt down nuances of jazz, psychedelia and traditional South African music to paint a unique picture that's delightfully frenzied yet soulfully smooth all at once. From the big Rhodes washes and vocal textures of "The Observer" to the dramatic percussive tumbles and lonely trumpet of "The Observed" by way of epic multi-suite adventures such as "The Sea" and the incendiary opener "Mzwandile", Wisdom Of Elders lives up to its name with a spirit that's at once both future and timeless.

Review: Woody Shaw was one of the more influential jazz musicians of his time. This album was recorded in 1985 and finds him in full flow with his Tone Jansa Quartet. The American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, and band leader very much shows off his improvisational skills on flugelhorn and trumpet while his sidemen Renato Chico on piano, Peter Herbert on bass, Dragan Gajic on drums and Tone Jansa on tenor sax do not disappoint either. This is the first time the album has been reissued since its original release and comes in limited quantities.

Review: David Shire has one hell of a back catalogue. Active within music since the 1960s, and specifically theatre and film soundtracks in the 1970s, while many of the biggest names behind movie scores have a tendency to explore the same avenues, and therefore wind up creating tunes for relatively similar flicks, in this case that's not really true. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (the original, of course), All The President's Men, and parts of Saturday Night Fever give some idea as to the breadth of his mastery.
The Conversation slips right in there in terms of period and genre, but is, of course, a very different classic to a movie about a New York subway train getting hijacked or social tensions in Brooklyn at the height of the disco era. While largely focused on piano solos, we also get late night dance floor jazz, tense drone, and moody avant-garde, just in case the on-screen action wasn't brooding enough already.

Review: 1964 was a big year for Wayne Shorter. To start with he was still part of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and played on some fo their key albums and he also made his solo label debut before joining the iconic Miles Davis Quintet, cementing a line-up that would become one of the seminal bands in jazz history. Speak No Evil was a record he made in Van Gelder's studio on Christmas Eve 1964 and is a real masterpiece. Here six of the shortened originals are presented on a 180g vinyl as part of the all analog Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition series.

This Classic Vinyl Series issue is all-analogue and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes then pressed on 180g vinyl. Review: A decade into his career, Horace Silver recorded what many consider one of his finest albums at the renowned Van Gelder Studio. Joined by Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Roy Brooks, the session marked a key transition for his quintet. This album was released a year before his iconic hit 'Song for My Father,' which was indeed a tribute to his Cape Verdean father. This reissue for the Blue Note Classic series has been remastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes so it offers an all-analogue experience and delivers superb sound quality that honours Silver's legacy.

Review: Nina Simone has rather been written out of popular music history because of quite how confrontational and proudly Black she was. She was just as far ahead of her times musically too and this legendary album Baltimore shows why. It arrived with no promotion and no lead singles and so it was an utter commercial failure, but the sleuths of the internet have rediscovered it over the 45 years since its release and helped to make it a cult favourite now regarded as one of the best in her oeuvre. It has distinctive reggae production and of course plenty of beautiful vocals from Simone as she tackles songs written by Judy Collins, Hall & Oates, and Randy Newman.

Review: It is fair to say that this Nina Simone live album really captures the legendary singer at her raw and most powerful best. Recorded during her 1969 European tour, this live recording showcases Simone's incredible ability to blend genres-jazz, blues, folk, and soul-while delivering deeply emotional performances. Songs like 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' and 'Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead)' reflect her lyrical prowess and elsewhere her activism and social consciousness shine through. Her haunting renditions of classics, combined with virtuosic piano playing, make for a magnetic listen that all these years on is a great record of Simone's enduring brilliance, charisma, and her role as a vital cultural and musical innovator.

Review: If you're unfamiliar with Yugoslavia-era Croatian animated children's entertainment than where have you been? And, please, allow us some introductions. Produced for 11 years, between 1967 and 1978, Professor Balthazar was a kids show about a benevolent genius scientist (the titular star) who helps those around him overcome various problems, often through the use of invention, using a magical machine to come up with innovative designs to solve any issue. While there is certainly subtext to read into - TV has always been a bastion of propaganda, not least behind the Iron Curtain of yore - trying to pinpoint the location or origin here isn't easy, if you don't already know. No character speaks a discernible language, making this resolutely universal storytelling. Similarly, the soundtrack, by Balkan master Tomislav Simovic, is relentlessly shapeshifting and expressive, and impossible not to fall in love with, no matter where you grew up.

Review: Tomislav Simovic was among the most significant musical masters to emerge in post-World War II Yugoslavia. The Croatian artist was a member of several jazz bands over the years, is considered a pioneer of southern European electronic music, a highly respected musical theorist, commentator, and all-round visionary. During his lifetime, he would score 300 films, many of which are lost to the sands of time, and those that did survived, or were recreated by new artists, are considered examples of soundtrack as art. Few answer that call better than this previously unreleased collection of 18 short animated films from the Zagreb school, which positioned itself as an artistic institution concerned with presenting philosophical world views and changing the course of animated history. Simovic's work, even without the visuals, conveys this brilliantly, with a mixture of whimsy, comedy, contemporary songwriting, and grand arrangements.

Review: Mustapha Skandrani is a luminary of Algerian music who crafted a unique fusion of Arabo-Andalusian and European styles. His 1965 solo piano album Istikhbars and Improvisations was recorded in Paris and reimagines traditional Algerian istikhbars, which are vocal pieces rooted in Islamic Arabo-Andalusian culture, on a quintessentially European piano. While some purists criticised this approach, Skandrani highlighted the shared European elements within Arabo-Andalusian traditions and demonstrated the Mediterranean as a bridge, not a divide. Alternating between modal istikhbars and piano improvisations, his precise touch evokes comparisons to Bach's Goldberg Variations while retaining strong Arabic/Maghreb influences.

Review: Following years of notable collaborations with some of jazz's leading voices, saxophonist and band leader Walter Smith III finally broke through in 2023 via a first headlining album for Blue Note. On his return to the label, Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not, Smith pays tribute to the Texan city of his birth in the company of Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Smith (bass). It's a pleasingly breezy, positive and expertly crafted affair, with the quartet running through a series of ear-catching Smith compositions and a radical (and rather good) interpretation of an old Sam Rivers number. A wholehearted tribute to the rarely discussed cultural richness and diversity of Smith's home city.

Made up of five musicians Shacho, Tabu Zombie, Josei on piano, Akita Goldman on bass and Midorin on drums, they are primarily an expressive live outfit who serve up rough and ready sounds that fire your every single synapse. Review: "Sketching The Unknown" is a terrific name for an album, particularly for a deep modal jazz set that aims to draw maximum influence from "the folk and modal music of ancient Greece". We're not knowledgeable enough on Greek musical traditions to say whether or not saxophonist Sokratis Votskos and his quartet have successfully accomplished that aim, but we can confirm that "Sketching The Unknown" is superb. Brilliantly arranged, played and produced with surprises around every corner, it's one of the boldest and inventive jazz sets we've heard for some time. There's no fusion antics, sampled hip-hop beats or modern studio trickery, just five high quality jazz cuts that sound like they will last the test of time.

Review: The Sokratis Votskos Quartet features Kostas Anastasiadis and Giorgos Klountzos on drums, Leandros Pasias on piano, Vaggelis Vrachnos on contrabass and Sokratis Votskos on soprano sax, bass clarinet and composition and they have a fulsome and electrifying jazz sound that pays homage to greats of the genre such as Wayne Shorter and John Coltrane. This album celebrates life with expressionistic solos, sweeping arrangements and plenty of off-grid rhythmic drama, all of which was recorded during the challenging COVID-era and no doubt distils the highs and lows of those times into the music.

Review: Saxophonist Elin Forkelid and guitarist David Stakenas return with a dynamic follow-up to 2022's What Year Is It? on which they are joined by drummer Anna Lund and bassist Mauritz Agnas. This quartet delivers a bold mix of free jazz, distorted guitars, and thunderous baritone sax over approximately 50 minutes of musical thrills. Their sound melds influences from Carla Bley, Joni Mitchell, Ornette Coleman, and Bill Frisell into hard-edged, propulsive compositions. The opener, 'Elena' evolves into a hypnotic piece reminiscent of Coltrane, Stakenas' tracks like 'If Not' and 'Marbles' showcase Frisell's heavy delay influence and the album crescendos with 'Hello Again, Paul,' featuring an over-the-top baritone sax reminiscent of early 1970s rock.

This album highlights Memela's unique approach to African funk as he delivers two expansive 15-minute tracks that showcase his prowess as a guitarist and composer. For them, Memela teams up here with Soweto's Pelican Club house band, whose skilled members add a rich, rhythmic backbone to his intricate guitar lines. The two compositions on Broken Shoes feel like immersive musical journeys, drawing you into a landscape where traditional African influences meet the groove-driven energy of funk. The extended tracks provide ample space for the musicians to explore and build up layers of rhythm and melody with a live, almost hypnotic quality.

Review: Belarus collective Soyuz grace Mr Bongo with their third album, building on a formidable background in lush orchestral jazz to deliver an album of astonishing beauty. Their music draws on 70s Brazilian MPB as a major source of inspiration, but everything has a twist which feels unique to composer and arranger Alex Chumak's location in modern day Belarus. As a result, the album sounds comfortingly familiar but strangely new in the same breath, and oh so very easy on the ears. The sound is light and airy, with space to soar through liberal reverb, while the rhythm section gently buffets rather than slamming. You won't hear another record as sweet and sincere as this all year, we promise.

Review: A recent search through the Red Records archive uncovered two quarter-inch tapes, originally thought to be blank. To everyone involved's surprise, each reel held a previously unknown track by the cult jazz group Sphere. This find is remarkable for those who know as Sphere's official recording catalogue is notably sparse and in fact is limited to just two Elektra Musician releases and two Red Records live recordings. This discovery adds valuable depth to the legacy of a group with few official recordings and brings new weight to their influential contributions to jazz.

Review: Fred Spider Presents Chakalaka Jazz: A Selection of South African Gems celebrates South Africa's unique and ever-moving jazz landscape. It is a scene that has always blended traditional niches with global influences and styles like marabi, goema and mbaqanga capture the essence of this as Fred "Voom Voom" Spider dives into those and many other rich, eclectic depths. Spider's term "Chakalaka Jazz" reflects the spicy blend of influences and is named after the local relish made from tomatoes, onions and chilli. This collection, spanning 1969 to 2003, is a mix of local talent, exiles and expats that honours the golden era of the 1970s.

The lyrics, which are both simple and profound, convey direct messages inspired by everyday life and encourage listeners to realise their potential. The album explores nature as a nurturing force and honours the sea goddess Yemanja, which is rooted in Brazilian and African traditions. With soft tones and soothing rhythms, it creates a sensory experience that mixes traditional Brazilian sounds with more modern ideas so is an ideal soundtrack for summer.

Review: Few records capture the essence of Hawai'i like the debut album by Steve Ma'i'i and Teresa Bright. It is one full of enchanting sounds and beachy grooves which caught the attention of engineer Rick Keefer who invited them to record at Sea-West Studios in Hau'ula. Remarkably, the duo completed the album in under three hours and the results are sublime and stunning as well as perfectly escapist. Steve and Teresa are a harmonising guitar-and-bass duo who came up in the 70s and 80s and blended jazz standards, traditional Hawaiian songs, and hapa haole classics. These days, the classic title tune 'Catching A Wave' is performed at weddings and festivals, yet the album has long been out-of-print. Not any more - this vital reissue is a must have.

Review: Macie Stewart's debut on International Anthem finds the multi-instrumentalist and composer, in her own words, writing a "love letter to the moments we spend in-between," all while returning to her first instrument, the piano. Through prepared piano, field recordings and string quartets, she creates a cinematic, transient world that reflects her musical journey. Featuring collaborations with artists like Lia Kohl and Whitney Johnson, the album weaves a sound collage of memory and movement that is inspired by her travels. When the Distance is Blue muses on themes of change, longing and the beauty found in the unknown.

Review: International Anthem continues to serve up inspired debuts from some of the more intriguing members of Chicago's jazz and experimental music communities. The latest comes from multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser Macie Stewart, who has delivered what's being dubbed "a companion piece for moving through life". At the heart of the album is Stewart's use of both piano and 'prepared piano' (a technique where various items such as coins and pieces of felt are attached to the instrument's strings). These picturesque and occasionally melancholic musical motifs come wrapped in atmospheric field recordings and sensitive string quartet arrangements. The results are rarely less than memorable, mesmerising and magnificent.

Review: This is a real jazz-funk gem for those who know, but it has long been out of print after its initial release on PM Records in 1976. It features an all-star lineup of saxophonist Steve Grossman, bassist Gene Perla and percussionist Don Alias and highlights include Stevie Wonder's 'Creepin'' and the iconic 'Sweetie Pie' which has famously been sampled by acts like the Beastie Boys. The Stone Alliance trio is joined by Argentine musicians who enrich their sharp core sound with keyboards, percussion and bandoneon for a warm, lyrical vibe. A real 70s masterpiece.

Many have become hard to find and out-of-print pieces that cost a pretty penny. Heads Up is a fine example of the trio's signature prowess featuring saxophonist Steve Grossman (who worked with Miles Davis no less, plus bassist Gene Perla and percussionist Don Alias. Review: Brownswood Recordings have become something of a meme, cementing their very distinct jazz sound with every new release. Str4ta's 'Str4tasfear' is the latest LP from the project (which consists of Gilles Peterson and Jean Paul Maunick), painting a vague party-jazz homage to the dawn of the Brit-funk era, but they're not being too succinct about any overarching message beyond that. The songs here are danceable, and that's their main focus. 'Lazy Days' is the drawer-inner - with Emma-Jean Thackray's singing lulling us into a state of preferring not to go to work - while 'Night Flight' opens the bay doors into an instrumental space lounge. All sizzlers.

Review: Stray Voltage is not for the faint of ear. This is triple-A rated Sun Ra at their best, namely audacious, aggressive and adventurous. Forget melodies or sing-along hooks-this collection dives deep into Sun Ra's unissued electronic explorations from the 70s and 80s when, using synths and keyboards as his tools, the one and only 'Ra didn't just play, he assaulted, provoked, and moulded raw sound into wild and unimaginable sonic landscapes. These are not songs in the traditional sense, but abstract journeys full of texture and tension that make for a thrilling glimpse into Ra's boundary-pushing experiments where structure gives way to sensation and the sheer power of cosmic expression.

Spaceways showcased material that the spiritual jazz pioneer recorded with his "arkestra" in 1966 and '68, most of which eventually saw the light of day on El Saturn Records in 1974. Given that copies of that particular release are nigh on impossible to find, this reissue is more than welcome. It's as spacey, intergalactic and out there as you'd expect, with the ten-minute "Outerspace Incorporated" - all extended drum solos, cacophonous hand percussion and trippy horn motifs - and groovy "We Travel The Spaceways" being particularly potent.

Review: Sun Ra and the Arkestra defy convention as a non-traditional studio ensemble and each record in their vast discography proves this as it unfolds as a celestial journey. This release, Thunder Of The Gods sheds light on the group's origins. 'Calling Planet Earth - We'll Wait For You' emerges from Ra's Universe In Blue tapes, from around 1971, while the title track and 'Moonshots Across the Sky' hail from the 1966 Strange Strings sessions. Unearthed by Michael D. Anderson of the Sun Ra Music Archive, these gems showcase Ra's sonic artistry. Modern Harmonic pairs the music with visual art by Chesley Bonestell, who blends his iconic piece 'Formation of the Earth's Continents' with Ra's cosmic soundscapes to great effect.

Review: Even by Sun Ra's eccentric and deeply psychedelic standards, Strange Strings is an outlier. Eventually released in 19657 but mostly recorded in New York in 1965, it was the result of Sun Ra turning up at the studio with a vast number of string instruments and asking his 'Arkestra' - none of whom knew how to play them - to make some noises. In true fashion, the results are spectacularly experimental - think freeform experimental jazz, created via a cacophony of improvisation, with added intergalactic intent. This lightly expanded, remastered edition contains original mono versions of the album tracks, a rare stereo mix of 'Crystal Spheres (Amongst Worlds)', a recently rediscovered concert recording ('Untitled St Peter'), and a snippet of Sun Ra being interviewed while the Arkestra plays around with strings in the background.

All good things must come to an end, though, and so it does with The Sun Ra Arkestra meets Salah Ragab in Egypt which was recorded with help from the Cairo Jazz Band and first put out back in 1983 on Greek label Praxis. Now he arrives on the cultured Dark Entries with Private Recordings: August 1970, which is a pulling together of plenty of vintage jazz, blues, and gospel sounds a world away from his chart-topping collaboration 'You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)' with producer Patrick Cowley. They show he had a love of the sounds of the 30s and 40s and were recorded with Peter Mintun, a pianist and record collector he met who was at the time living in a commune devoted to retro culture. The nine tunes feature what would become Sylvester's unique falsetto and they are all as captivating as his later and more well-known works.
