Wonderland (Jam 6) (5:07)
Keep It Together (Jam 5) (3:42)
Down & Dirty (Jam 2) (5:40)
Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

A Race Of Angels - "Just Begin"
Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. With Love compilation back in 2007, "Just Begin" is a classy slice of minimal songwriting and gets further blessed by a B Side rework featuring the collective talents of Theo, Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

And the latest is a golden-era classic featuring legendary mic men A Tribe Called Quest and top soul boy Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band. The A-side features the track taken from A Tribe Called Quest's Love Movement album so is packed with their signature beats and bars. On the B-side, you are treated to the funky original sample source from Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band which delivers a raw, infectious groove. Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

Dread At The Controls
Review: Adesse Versions' second release combines a touch of Baile Funk with some classic Balearic samples, a touch of Dance Mania and deep, liquid house pads from the heart of Detroit. This can mostly be said for the A-side's "Color Talkin", while there's a stripped back alternative in "Drums Talkin". Not content with the one alternative there's a drum machine heavy rework of both tunes in "Leaving The '90s" while there's argument to be had that "Dread At The Controls" is a Jamaican riddim version made for a hot summer's dancefloor.

Review: New year, new white label vinyl that you need in your life. This one comes from Adam "Admin" Wickens who is a lovely chap and fine DJ and producer who we havent heard from for a while. In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. 'Step Into Light' has a louche beat and piano lounge chords over the top of the shakers, dusty hits and mellifluous pads. 'Reflect & Heal' then speed sup little but is just as soft, cuddly, and richly melodic for those late night sessions.

Review: Building on the heat of last year's "Devil Made Me Do It", Alex Puddu's Afro Soul Prophecy returns with more smoking jazz fusions. "Red Light District" is as hot and illicit as the title suggests thanks to its prominent drums and heated horn work. "The Game Of Love" plays the perfect counter with its much softer, sentimental swoons and loungey dynamics. Instant summer soul soothers.

"Daddy's Groove" is a perfect summer heater with its laid back horns that ooze over the wah wah licks and strutting rim-shots. Review: Religion, and specifically gospel music, always played a key part in shaping the sounds and emotions of easy house music. It is clearly going to have just as much impact on this new label God Iz Enough which debuts with an EP of the same name from Tomi Ahmedeus. His style on the opener is to lay down raw and dusty beats with an early Windy City feel and infuse them with evocative, guttural gospel vocals that really bring them to life and make them inescapably emotive. 'The Rise Of The Guttersnipe' strips things back a little and brings a shuffling tech vibe with some glistening melodies while 'Ms Ludus' is a gorgeous ambient closer.

Review: Many Hands is a fresh label helmed by Jona Jefferies and Kava that here kicks out an eclectic EP with four tracks from various members of its musical family. Dan Aikido opens with '0800 TXT4 Herb,' a smooth fusion piece that builds a laid-back groove, blending fretless bass, jazzy keys and soulful vocals all reminiscent of Rare Silk's 'Storm.' Ernie Ruso's 'Stroke It' offers slow, sensual r&b infused with P-funky wah-wah effects while DJ Nomad's 'African Boy' brings upbeat pop house next to funky organ and a female reggae MC.Jefferies' closer 'A Change Will Come' samples Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with a rave-inspired beat and soulful piano. Wahala
Review: Tip Of The Iceberg presents 'Fela Dey'. These two tracks are lifted from 'P.D.P. (President Dey Pass)', the second CD
from the New York afrobeat scenesters, Akoya Afrobeat. Fully representing the instrumentation and capacity of a true
African-style super group, 'P.D.P.' is a marker of the living musical legacy of afrobeat founder Fela Kuti. Active on the
New York music scene since 2002, Akoya's sound rules dance floors home and abroad with the deep afro funk. Fueled
by infectious, all-consuming percussive grooves and a warm, pulsating rhythm section, the band delivers the knockout
punch with a massive horn section and soulful vocals. Musical roots not withstanding, 'P.D.P.' forges new ground in
many directions, yet still retains the central quality that bridges all musical tastes. Deep cyclical composition with a
prominent backbeat is their hallmark, and with razor-sharp transitions and melodies, listeners will be constantly surprised and elated.

Run The Sun (7:59)
Lunar (8:17)
Review: Lithuanian drummer Marijus Aleksa is cutting his teeth into house and tech with this solo debut via the YAM Recordings imprint, out of London, after having come to prominence thanks to his involvement in various groups, namely Contra Jazz, Mock?no Nuclear and Saga. As such, these four tracks present a delightfully jazzy strain of house music, starting with the electro-minded groove of "Time Blur" and followed closely by the more bumpy, more jovial sounds of "Mon Mon". Over on the flip, "Run The Sun" breaks the groove and dissipates into a much more loungy sort of flex, full of haze and mystery, while "Lunar" picks up the tempo and launches a minimalistic, drum-led pseudo-house rhythm with a distinctly organic aesthetic.

Review: As showcased by DJ Koco from Japan on instagram and as the label artwork makes clear, this two-tracker from the previously unheard Alex Santos Orchestra was made in tribute to Creed Taylor's legendary CTI Records imprint, which during the 1970s released some of the finest jazz, jazz-funk and fusion ever made. On side A the studio collective gives their interpretation of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 epic 'Red Clay', with the track's most famous musical elements - jaunty sax riffs and mazy electric piano motifs - rising above a funkier, warmer and tighter interpretation of the track's low-end groove. Turn to the flip for their version of Bob James' favourite 'Nautilus', a harder edge take that combines a faithfully spacey take on the original's electric piano melody with sweatier beats and heavier horns.

This is the Bristol band's second sizzling single of the year on the Jalapeno label and it is another doozy. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. Review: Sonar Kollective deliver two massive club tunes from Innervisions stars Âme and Japanese newcomers Agora Rhythm. As one of the biggest newcomers of 2005, headlining last year's Top Tens in both Debug and Groove magazines with their mighty 'Rej', Âme pitch down their tempo for this exclusive new track named 'Excelsior' and prove that they have more than peaktime qualities. Featuring an excerpt of Clara Hill's voice from her last album 'Restless Times', the two sympathetic guys from Karlsruhe, Germany fuse different ingredients to form an astonishing hypnotic journey. Tokyo-based duo Agora Rhythm already received big props from Innervisions artists like Alex From Tokyo and DJ Dixon, who immediately created one of his famous edits that usually never leave his CDDJ cases but this time decided to share it. Percussion coupled with an infectious groove and a moving bassline make this a sure shot, already tried and tested by the usual suspects.

They've gathered together the results on an expansive album - available on digital download - and a string of vinyl EPs. This first wax installment boasts reworks of two album tracks: "Superficial", and "Steppin". Mark E steals the show with his remix of the former, placing the Detroit veteran's sterling vocal over a dreamy, hypnotic deep house groove. Similarly inspired - to our ears, at least - is Qwestlife's bustling flipside of "Steppin", which re-casts the rolling, organic house original (also included) as a jaunty chunk of two-step garage/synth-boogie fusion.

Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. Review: In anticipation of the forthcoming follow up to the hugely popular "Stay On The Groove" compilation, Freestyle drop another couple of sublime modern funk nuggets on 45. Beaming in directly from Israel, The Apples give us the insanely catchy "Attention!" - lifted from their debut album of the same name, this is an essential slice of dancefloor funk. Updating the classic funk sound, The Apples drop heavy instrumentation over a looped up break, alongside some fresh cuts and scratches. Rumoured to be a live experience not to miss, we hope to be able to bring you more from this energetic set. Cola (3:41)
George (3:11)
Review: Arlo Parks is now a hugely successful indie artist with many great tunes to her name. One of them came back in 2019 in the form of her Cola EP back when she was just 18 years old. It showcased her smoky, soulful and mournful vocal skills with gentle guitar accoutrements and plenty of dusty vinyl crackle for added authenticity. That title tune is here in all its tender glory while on the flip is 'George' which is yet another standout single that has slightly more upbeat lyrics and prouder production. What a talent she is.

Nothing Move (4:19)
Review: After making plenty of heard turning releases on other labels, the super talented Joe Armin Jones launches his own new imprint Aquarii Records. He is joined on the tidy 10" by Morgan Simpson of Black Midi on drums, and Luke Wynter of Nubiyan Twist playing bass. His own gorgeous keys lead the way with 'Pray' being a busy cut awash with splashing cymbals, joyous chord progressions and tight rolling rhythms. There is a more chilled-out and downtempo vibe to the loose hip hop beats of 'Nothing Move' on the reverse. Both are brilliant.

Get On With The Looking (5:24)
Do You Know (11:17)
Becoming Welcome (17:13)
Review: From his early releases for the mythical Greta Cottage Workshop, outsider house specialist Arnheim has come a long way, and his own Barbara Recordings is now on its way to ruling the downtempo game! In fact, Arnheim's sound are more on the inside than the outside, if this new EP is anything to go by; "Get On With The Looking" is on a Mahogani Music tip, while "Do You Know" stutters its off-kilter groove with magnificent elegance, and "Becoming Welcome" breaks out some fine jazz melodies in what sounds like a truly well-balanced piece of music that sits outside of the generic 'club' atmosphere. Quality assured.

Review: Tyrone Isaac-Stuart on sax, Jabriel Al Suhaimi on guitar, Arnheim on the magic studio touch: "World You Tell Me About You" builds on where Lithuanian producer last left us on his own Barbara imprint. Four tracks of dusty, loosely-hewn cuts ranging from the baggy, woozy pure jazz sentiment "Hold Me" and "Would You Tell Me About You" to the loopy chugging haze of "That He Man Of Hers" by way of the lolloping off-beat "One's Own Permanent Faith", Arnheim's fusion skills continue to explore unchartered territories remain on-point.

Introducing Marcina Arnold

Blues For Jean Charles Menezes
Forefathers
Memory
Neva Do It
Review: Marcina Arnold is a London based singer/songwriter/percussionist, born of Scottish and South African roots. She has recently released her debut album, "Twisted Blue Folk", which she describes as "global music with jazz/folk roots and strong rhythmic influences". The collection features a stellar line-up of musicians and vocalist from the UK's jazz, soul and broken beat scene, including Byron Wallen, Eska, Tom Herbert, Mpho Skeef and Jason Yarde. Here is a four track vinyl EP, featuring two previously unreleased tracks & two of the most requested tracks from her debut CD. "Blues For Jean Charles Menezes" is a poignant song recounting the tragic events surrounding the death of the Brazilian man who was mistakenly murdered in the Summer of 2005. An emotive cry for the truth, this is a 21stcentury blues that's both tough and tender. "Forefathers" is a deep and joyful voyage into the tropics. With Marcina's melodic vocals and rhythmic acoustic guitar gliding over the subtle bossa beat as saxophonist Kebbie Williams weaves his evocative notes around the song with graceful ease. "Memory" is a melancholic bittersweet samba that's so damn infectious it will lodge itself deep inside the listener's ears, whilst "Neva Do It" is packed with teasing and testing harmonies that rip you up on the inside. A deeply personal song that incorporates both folky intimacy and soulful stridency in equal measures.

Review: Make way for a jazzy new sister imprint from Phil Weeks' well respected stable! Robsoul Jazz launches with a serious statement of laidback intent courtesy of French instrumentalist Around 7. Sitting at a cool seven cuts, it's a humble affair that nods heavily to the creative beat baking of Dilla and the soothing, left-sided jazz soul of Brubeck or Davis. Think grooves rather than entire songs, each one captures the mind and leaves the body to relax. The perfect head-nodding foil to Robsoul's standard body-jacking beats.

What's This World Coming To (instrumental) (4:46)
Review: Originally released on the cult V4 Visions label in 1991 & 1994, Ashaye's 'Dreaming' and 'What's This World Coming To' epitomised the essence of street soul, a genre blending soul, r&b, and hip-hop that resonated across London's pirate radio stations in the 1990s. With the surge in UK soul's popularity in recent years, DJs and tastemakers have championed these tracks which has in turn elevated their demand and value. 'Dreaming' has become nearly unattainable on the second-hand market, while 'What's This World Coming To' commands prices upwards of L50. Snap up this fully licensed RSD release however and you will have both tracks for an affordable price.
