Moods & Grooves Classics V3
  1. Andres - "Just A Player"
  2. Brad Peterson - "Trickchords"
  3. John Tejada & Adrian Leviste - "Fashion Avenue" (remix)
  4. Ewan Jansen - "New Stride" (Deez Follow Da Bass remix)
Review: "Classics" releases work best when the material being showcased is either obscure, hard to find or overlooked. Much of the material on this third trawl back through the vaults of Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves imprint ticks all these boxes. For example, Andres' "Just A Player" - a refreshingly loose and bumping fusion of warm disco samples, snappy beats and a killer bassline - has never previously appeared on wax. Then there's the soul-flecked, jazz-house/broken beat hybrid "Fashion Avenue (Remix)" by John Tejada and Leviste, which sounds remarkably fresh despite being 14 years old. As for Brad Peterson's strutting, acid bass-propelled "Trickchords", we're struggling to find any reference to it having been released before. Whether it has or not, it's as essential as the rest of this superb EP.

Review: Several years in the making Mike Grant finally completes the second Cool Peepl project. Originally assembled in 2002 for the Puzzlebox Sharevari remixes, Cool Peepl is a collection of Detroit artists coming together for a session. Focusing less on machine based tracks, the group focuses onorganic productions. Free features former Members of the House vocalist Bill Beaver, longtime percussionist Sundiata O.M. and the multi-talented heavyweight Amp Fiddler.

  1. KDJ - "Untitled 1" (4:00)
  2. KDJ - "Untitled 2" (5:35)
  3. Rick Wade - "Thought Process" (6:35)
  4. Rick Wade - "Forever Night" (6:34)
Review: The Moods & Grooves Classics series - in which vintage, long deleted gems from the back catalogue get another airing - continues with a strong quartet of tracks from Kenny Dixon Jnr and Rick Wade. The two untitled tracks from Dixon, under his occasional KDJ moniker, originally slipped out way back in 2000. Both are superb, with the goodtime shuffle of "Untitled 2" (all jangly house pianos and looped disco-influenced grooves) just losing out to the slower, African-inspired "Untitled 1" in the "EP highlight" stakes. Wade's two contributions - deep, spacious, blazed and deliciously melodious - are taken from his 1999 Quantum Expression EP. Of these, it's the enveloping, jazz-flecked warmth of "Forever Night" that stands out

  1. E 1208
  2. I 1502
  3. A 0519
Review: Should you want some evidence of Romania's ever growing status within the techno community look no further than this debut release from Lisiere Collectif on Mike Grant's long running Moods & Grooves label. Formed of childhood friends Andu Simion, Dan Gheorghe and Bogdan Ardeleanu, Lisiere Collectif hail from the Ploiesti area of Romania and their stated inspiration for Detroit's house music heritage (as well as Berlin techno) makes them a smart fit for Moods & Grooves. There's a sense of refinement to the trio's productions that belies their lack of experience with the sweeping moods of "E 1208" and the moving Motor City chords of "A 0519" both excellent.

  2. Ngizo Ku Linda (Abicah Soul remix)
  3. Ngizo Ku Linda (instrumental edit)
Review: Truly spiritual house for the soul from the man Alton Miller here, with a new 12" on Moods & Grooves and his first for Mike Grant's label in over a decade! Recorded in South Africa with Africa's legendary artist/ producer Bantu Soul, "Ngizo Ku Linda" is the right kind of fusion and nestles snugly between afro house, jazz funk and just a dash of Motor City grit in the groove. It's made all the more memorable by Bantu Soul's sublime vocal delivery and the accompanying remix from Chicago producer Abicah Soul that tightens up the groove to give proceedings a more deep house flavoured sheen.
