Review: New Zealand's After 'Ours, helmed by Michal Martyniuk and Nick Williams, return with Long Road, a remarkable follow-up to their 2016 debut Odyssey. Known for blending elements of jazz, soul, and electronica, the duo has crafted an album that reflects their growth while maintaining the warmth and community spirit that defined their earlier work. Long Road builds on the smooth grooves and intricate rhythms that drew comparisons to the likes of Steely Dan, A Tribe Called Quest, and Robert Glasper. The album sees the duo reconnecting with previous collaborators like Kevin Mark Trail and Ange Williams, while also introducing fresh talent, including British soul legend Omar Lyefook and Jakarta-based saxophonist Kuba Skowronski. The ten tracks on Long Road weave through various genres, from UK broken beat to modern soul and blues rock, creating a rich tapestry of sound. Tracks like 'Looking Glass' and 'Morning Chorus' showcase the duo's ability to create deeply emotive music, while the inclusion of live instrumentation adds a vibrant, organic feel. Long Road is a sublime listening experience that is full of diverse influences that have shaped their sound over the years.

Review: Over the past three decades, Auckland has nurtured many generations of musicians, DJs, and producers who have blended jazz, blues, soul, funk, Latin, hip-hop, house, boogie and broken beats into all-new sounds. After 'Ours, a group led by pianist Michal Martyniuk and drummer and guitarist Nick Williams, very much embodies this tradition. Nick, influenced by his DJ mother and musician father, led Auckland's Latin-dub-funk band Tangent while Michal, raised in Poland, immersed himself in Auckland's jazz scene and formed After 'Ours in 2011. Their new album Long Road merges machine funk with vibrant live instrumentation and bridges jazz, neo-soul, electronica, and dance with infectious charm.

Review: French illustrator, producer and owner of Astral Soda Records Albino offers up his second full-length album, Bamboo Night, following up his self-released 2016 album Santa Barbara. Returning to WRWTFWW for the second time now, Bamboo Night reflects something of a more dance-centric revolution in Albino's sound, but still brings his penchant for patented tape hues and ghostly exotics to the fore as ever. These tracks are just as suited for floor play as they are for home eso-chillaxing, fusing whispery dancehall flavours with dark jazz, Chicago deep house, and trembly international flavours.

The Alex Santos Orchestra On Tour

Theme From The Godfather (4:59)
Mr Clean (4:52)
Review: The Alex Santos Orchestra is a self-described "orchestra" orchestrated for the express purpose of sanctifying one Alex Santos' lifelong love for jazz and Latin music. Following the much loved 'Alex Santos Y Su Orquesta', 2021's next step in Latinizing said quasi-conceptual ensemble, we've now landed in the project's live ambit. 'The Alex Santos Orchestra On Tour' captures just two live highlights from a much more recent outing (given the mystification surrounding the project, this may or may not have happened). Whatever the case, these recordings span both potentialities, retaining something of a highly-strung Hammond organ come upfront-drumkit drama on the B-side, 'Mr Clean', and an equally stirring version of the main theme from 'The Godfather' on the A.

Review: This is a full artwork version of the same release that dropped recently as a pre-release white label, so will look as good on the shelves as it sounds on the decks. DJ Dez Andres has been particularly productive of late after releasing a series of" records that showcase his signature edits. The collection includes 'Boogie,' a broken beat banger featuring a catchy whistle, followed by 'Maxin',' a sensuous, downtempo track with smooth pads and laid-back beats. The final track, 'Talking,' wraps things up with soulful vocals and a romantic, late-night vibe.

Review: Ant's Collection of Sounds Vol. 1 offers a profound exploration of his vast musical expertise. As a cornerstone of Atmosphere and Rhymesayers Entertainment, Ant's latest project delves into his deep archive of unreleased material, presenting a sonic journey that's both intimate and expansive. The album masterfully balances moods, from the eerie closeness of 'Bar One' to the wide-open, atmospheric '4-Track Beyond Beat 1996.' Ant's ability to craft beats that invite exploration is evident throughout, with tracks practically begging for lyrical accompaniment. Yet, he resists the urge to overcomplicate, keeping the focus on the purity of the instrumentals. Collection of Sounds isn't just a showcase of technical skill; it's a reflection of Ant's artistic evolution, blending past influences with fresh ideas. The vinyl's packaging adds a tactile dimension to the experience, featuring a custom green record housed in a beautifully designed jacket with artwork by ZooDeville and Saber. This first volume has Ant's enduring creativity on full display with top notch hip-hop production.

Review: The Ballistic Brothers are back with another reissued nine-track dose of bare but big breaks belligerents. This cult '90s supergroup emerged from the steaming manhole covers of the London hip-hop underground - as the saying goes, "if you were part of any clubbing tribe in the early/mid 90s, you will have danced to the Ballistic Brothers". Made up of Darren Rock, Darren House, Ashley Beadle, David Hill and Uschi Classen, the bulk of their fame wafted forth from a swathe of surreptitious vinyl releases that took the record-digging community by storm at the time, yet which also invited much speculation as to their original membership (the wonders of the internet weren't so readily available back then). A variegated selection of tracks culled from many a different EP, we're compelled to recall a golden time when breakbeats weren't so brash, and in fact served as rhythmic accompaniments to a set of otherwise beauteous atmospheres. Cases in point include 'Save The Children', which combine trippy pan-pipes and funky organ with a theme of charitable concern, and 'Blacker 94 EQ', which impresses us yet more with its acid jazz breakouts and electric piano solo and which makes stark use of the suspenseful string line endemic to the sound.

Review: Bremer/McCoy's latest offering, Kosmos, transcends mere musiciit's a serene voyage into a realm where time and space dissolve. Jonathan Bremer's resonant double bass and Morten McCoy's keys, intertwined with tape delay, weave a tapestry of ethereal melodies and contemplative rhythms. Named aptly for its expansive, dreamlike quality, Kosmos delves deep into landscapes, where words are unnecessary. Bremer/McCoy's approach, honed over 15 years of collaboration, blends airy improvisations with carefully crafted compositions. Each track unfolds like a silent conversation, where music becomes a universal language of connection. Their sound, evolved from dub roots, now resonates with a profound sense of freedom and tranquility. It's evident that Kosmos is more than an albumiit's a statement of harmony and introspection amid turbulent times. McCoy and Bremer's ability to channel emotions into musical narratives is profound; each song feels like a trip of discovery, unfolding organically yet purposefully. For fans of meditative jazz and those seeking solace in sound, Kosmos offers sheer sanctuary.

A Way (DJ Rocca Black Satin remix) (7:12)
Review: IRMA has assembled a trio of top remixers here to add their own spin to some fine originals from Bright Magnus. Up first is the LTJ Xperience remix of 'Jungle Corner' and it is a low slung and steamy funk number with loose shakes of a tambourine and languid bass riffs drawing you in. 'Selim/Miles' (DJ Rocca 606 remix) is a blend of smeared synths and woozy guitar riffs over more lush downtempo beats that make it perfect for the midnight hours. Last but not least is 'A Way' (DJ Rocca Black Satin remix) which is a more psychedelic sound thanks to the drawn-out synth percolations that stretch through the mix.

Review: The press notes with this album are fun if not at all useful and include a tale of hopping into a Chevy convertible at noon, tuning the radio to the storm clouds gathering on the horizon and heading toward a border town on the desert's edge, peyote and dreamcatchers in the trunk, slide guitar and reverb echoing from the backseat. In reality, the sounds of Brokenchord's Sonte Island Tracks are indeed fitting for that fantasy. Lo-fi beats, half-heard melodies, knackered drums. It's intriguing and evocative and could be from the future or a forgotten old 70s classic. Either way, it's great.

Review: Building on the success of their acclaimed 2021 debut, this second volume deepens the creative synergy between Stephen Bunn, Jon DeBrett, and their ensemble. Six Weeks in June features core members Neil Corcoran, Alan Barnes, Roger Beujolais, and the compelling spoken word of Tenesha the Wordsmith. The album also introduces contributions from instrumentalists Nathan Haines, Crispin Taylor, Alastair Martin, and poet Daniel B. Summerhill. Spanning six tracks and nearly 40 minutes, Vol. 2 blends spiritual, modal, and modern jazz elements into a fluid and engaging listen. Born from a chance reunion on London's 94 Night Bus, Bunn and DeBrett's collaboration continues to thrive, resulting in an album that transcends boundaries and resonates with jazz enthusiasts and beyond. This is an essential addition for any serious music collector.

Ishfaq - "Wonderjazz" (5:56)
Review: Colin Curtis - an early purveyor of rare groove and jazzdance whose credo rings far and wide - has been helming his own label of originals for some time now. Presently focusing on the best live-feel broken beat, house and jazz in his orbit, his latest curation, Cengiz and Ishfaq's 'Vibrations', is no break from this general rule. Each artist helming one side respectively, Cengiz' 'Motf' and its remix work a steadily built progression around faint jeers, metallic percs, filterpassed tom fills and space-age risers, the latter of which is much more skeletal than the former; while Ishfaq's 'Wonderjazz' moves impressively somewhere in the lost interregnum between speed garage and techfunk.

The groove, crafted by percussion, bass and keyboards, is infectious, while the horn ensemble's arrangement is a testament to Central's unique style. Review: Into The Cosmos kick off their label with a promising start, demonstrating rather than describing their stated sonic mission with a rivetingly unusual fusion of footwork and fourth world; nu-house in a new age. Drum Dance's 'Zani!' is zany enough, sparring subtle sonic mysticisms contra hard-driving synth and drumwork, with the titular opener recalling the subtleties in the work of Machinedrum, albeit excepting the latter artist's technical itches for a calmer sonic drapery of tropical, topical balms and salves. 'Body Heat' goes housier, fusing the chromatic electric piano chords common to the voguish, incantatory ends of UK funky with the whispering yet determined hollers of a female vocal dance-guide. The B-side moves much more Balearic, preferring detuned, overtonic tremolos and slow ataraxic fruitions, ending on the calmly carpet-squatting jazz suspension that is 'Adan On Dot Soley'.

Since the release of Sounding Out The City in 2005, Michels has consistently pushed musical boundaries and has produced for many top names. In Glorious Game, he merges soul-tinged, bottom-heavy beats with Black Thought's deeply personal lyrics and, inspired by hip-hop's sample-based production, crafts new compositions that sample and reinterpret his own work to create dynamic, loop-driven instrumentals. The album is released on Big Crown Records which marks a debut partnership which will be interesting to follow.

Review: Almost three decades on from their last release, Acid Jazz forefathers Galliano are back with news of their new LP Halfway Somewhere, released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Led by lead single 'Circles Going Round The Sun', which proffers a watery, spiritual jazz-dance exposition through which the raspy vocal humours of the group's founder, Rob Gallagher, waxes poetic about the meaning of getting together for a boogie in the club. Where the somatic essence of the night might otherwise be resigned to experience alone, Galliano defy the unfortunate tendency for philistinism among dance music enjoyers in favour of a consistent spoken-word throughline; this is what the group have done since the 1980s, when they arrived as the first act on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, with 'Welcome To The Story'. Their first full-length record to emerge since their first album, Live at The Liquid Room (Tokyo), released in 1997, Halfway Somewhere is a triumphant yet latent return for these essential players.

Review: Galliano's return with Halfway Somewhere marks a significant moment in the resurgence of acid jazz. Led by founder Rob Gallagher, the band delve into the essence of club culture with their first single, 'Circles Going Round The Sun,' exploring the transformative power of dance. Referencing cultural icons like Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso, Galliano capture the spirit of London's underground scene from the late 80s, blending music, dance, fashion, and art. With their debut on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label in 1990, Galliano epitomized reinvention, embracing a fusion of influences from Jamaican style to spoken word records. Now, more than three decades later, they return with a refreshed lineup, drawing inspiration from the global jazz scene. Halfway Somewhere reflects Galliano's evolution, responding to the dynamic landscape of contemporary jazz while retaining their signature sound. With contributions from longtime members and guest artists, the album embodies the band's enduring spirit of experimentation and joy. As they navigate this new chapter, Galliano proves they're still on a journey, but one filled with excitement and creativity.

Review: Rob Gallagher and company make up Galliano, the trailblazing jazz and broken beat supergroup, active at least since 1997 andrenowned for their contribution to the musical landscape across the difficult-to-bridge gaps between music, fashion, spoken word and a concern for current affairs. Having staked their claim to their portion of the jazz and electronica pie as early as 1990, when they first appeared on the scene via Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label, Galliano have gone down in memory as a pioneering acid hip-jazz act, "capturing a scene (then) built on re-invention", in the words of Brownswood. Now the five-piece collective once again moves at one, synergising over a nineteen-track opus, three decades on from their debut, recalling the (literal) quintessence of London's down-in-history acid jazz scene.

Review: Colin Curtis Presents 'The Head Hunter' EP by GeeW, aka. Glenn Worthington, a relative new kid on the block, yet whose releases since 2021 have dealt in expert specialist wares of danceable acid jazz and nu-jazz. Such factors continue on this latest output, with the cloud nines and fluting solos of 'Head Hunter' and 'Speedball' whisking the listener away unto a quick flight, with spirited zoomings-past of electric bass and French horn, which dance astride the craft's flanks, as we shoot ever further into the abyss of jazzspace. Then B-siders 'Brazsecco Interlude' and 'How Long Has This Been Going On?' mark a migration from the cockpit through to the onboard lounge, in which Prosecco is poured and mounted speakers vibrate, curtailing anxieties with sweetly arranged vocals and carefully stacked percussion.

'S Composites' opens up and features Liu adding some angelic vocal sounds to the crunchy broken beast, glassy synths and generally frosty, lo-fi production aesthetic. It's a tune that will lodge deep in your brain then on the flipside is 'Racing Gloves' (feat The Narrator). It's a spacious, eerie, rather haunting number with woozy pads and some nice conscious bars over the dubby low ends.

Review: Chilly Gonzales' Gonzo offers an autobiographical dive into his rich, storied and accomplished career. While previous works showcased his musical depth, Gonzo explores some intriguing spoken-word sections and lyrics which are self-aggrandising and self-indulgent but always with a knowing irony. The opening track features Gonzales referring to himself as "Chilly G" in a way that is playful and songs like 'Surfing the Crowd' blend awkward nerd rap and poetry, while his witty lyrics add weight to the strong instrumental foundation. Packed with bright moments, Gonzales is in fine form here with a new type of work that is as interesting as his many other albums.

Review: On his latest EP 'Sunday Soul', Goodge takes listeners on a four-track journey into the many-chambered heart of funk, r&b, jazz and chillout. From the starting gun, we're hit with whammied axes and street-level audio-bustles, recalling the many exploitation movie soundtracks of the seventies and chic funkouts of yore. Then 'Promised Land' provides a gradual uplift, riffing around and about a lolling bass, as said guitars increase in intensity; this is then followed by 'Sunday Soul', which seizes upon the day of rest with a continued drive (of course, in today's world, no day is safe). Finally, 'Within Myself' ends things on a note of introspection, crafting an internal dialogue of cloudy synth fuggings set against a dust-cloud of instrumentation.

Can't Sleep (7" Limited version) (4:54)
Good Night (4:25)
Review: Ino Hidefumi is an electric pianist, jazzist, experimental electronicist, and music venue owner based in Japan. The sole purveyor of music on his own, strikingly singular, idiosyncratic Innocent Record label, Hidefumi's output remains starkly un-fuck-withable, betraying the highest concern with both songrcraft and packaging design. Sonically, everything he's made over the years sounds as tight as an oxidised tap in a vacuum seal, and 2018's 'Can't Sleep' is no exception to this. Emblematic of his preference of short EPs over albums, Hidefumi's tendency to pour over his music is evident here: 'Can't Sleep' portrays him slumped over the piano, having involuntarily dozed off, presumably after spending hours composing this curt but crucial sonic corpus. Embossed Rhodes novae and gullet-sung vocals abound on the title track, their effortless feel working to portray the hilarity of such eugeroic lapses, while 'Good Night' moves ever so slightly more emphatic, beelining to wish the listener goodnight, despite the subverted resolution to fall asleep after all.

Crafted entirely in his home studio, the album features his stripped-down compositions and distinctive voice after many years of writing songs but never actually singing on them himself. Shared with the world from his bedroom, the music's simplicity, its careful use of space within the ensemble, and the soothing electric piano create a captivating sound. This latest work captures a fresh, unfiltered essence while also conveying the artist's unwavering strength and sharpness as he continues to evolve his musical expression.

Review: Ishmael Ensemble's third album, Rituals, marks a major evolution for the Bristol-based group. While often associated with the 'new UK jazz' scene, their fusion of live instrumentation and electronic elements extends far beyond that label in truth and now this release pushes their sound further than ever. It blends spiritual jazz, dub, experimental, and electronic styles into powerful, swirling soundscapes that work as well on the head as they do heel. The tracks are more notably song-focused and accessible but still deal in a psychedelic mix of textures, colours, and moods. Rituals is a truly boundary-pushing work of great ambition and is this vital group's best work to date.

Review: Bristol's Ishmael Ensemble returns with Visions of Light, an album that nicely shows the evolution of this experimental jazz collective led by producer and saxophonist Pete Cunningham. Following their acclaimed 2019 debut, A State of Flow, this record pushes boundaries further, blending lush, cinematic jazz with Bristol's signature dub and electronic influences. The album begins with the delicate harp glissandos of 'Feather,' drawing the listener into a serene yet deceptive calm. This tranquility is shattered by the high-energy, chaotic 'Wax Werk,' where the music takes on a darker, more intense character. Throughout Visions of Light, Cunningham's saxophone performances are bold and assured, layered over the dynamic contributions of collaborators like guitarist Stephen Mullins, drummer Rory O'Gorman, and synth maestro Jake Spurgeon. Side-2 offers a shift in tone, beginning with the vibrant 'Looking Glass,' featuring enchanting vocals and strings. The nostalgic 'Morning Chorus' and the ethereal 'The Gift' build towards the hopeful resolution of 'January.' This album is deliver's an emotionally resonant journey that transcends traditional jazz boundaries. Visions of Light is both a bold statement and a beacon of hope in challenging times.

Review: Colin Curtis Presents hosts veteran producer Juju for yet another new five-track 12”, delivering a righteous sequence of funky and twangy nu-jazz and dance uplifts in quick step. The producer otherwise known as Roderick Stewart has made a welcome comeback to productions after an almost 25-year hiatus, landing on Colin Curtis with this EP, and the ‘Black Samba’ EP in 2023, well after his debut record ‘Evolution-Revolution’ in 1997. Whereas the earlier ‘90s record spanned the aethereal corners of the jazzstep and drumfunk ends of drum & bass, the likes of ‘Haute Couture’ demonstrate the inevitable shifting of tastes towards jazz and Latin fusion, as if to suggest a mellowing-out over the years, a settling-down into ease. Never letting up the dance, Juju brings a fantastically naturalistic edge to the patented 4x4 pulse, corralling an impressive cadre of instrumental collaborators including saxophonist Luke Radford, trombonist Harry Jones and rhythm guitarist Derek McDonald.

Harrington aimed to place Sun Ra alongside American music giants like Charles Ives and Duke Ellington. The project features a diverse lineup, including Jlin, Nicole Lizee, Zachary Watkins, Trey Spruance, Victoria Shen, and Jacob Garchik. The album's collaborative spirit is highlighted by contributions from Marshall Allen, Georgia Anne Muldrow, RP Boo, Armand Hammer, and 700 Bliss, among others. Harrington and his team sought to create a sonic landscape that reflects Sun Ra's world, blending genres and pushing the boundaries of music, much like Sun Ra himself did throughout his career. The result is a forward-thinking, cosmic journey that truly captures the expansive and boundary-defying essence of Sun Ra's work.

Review: In October 2024 Lady Blackbird, producer and guitarist Chris Seefried, Foundation Music label head and A&R Ross Allen and Blackbird's travelling band of Kenneth Crouch (keys), Tamar Barzilay (drums) and Johnny Flaughers (bass) took a break from extensively touring her prior album, Black Acid Soul, to lay down several tracks in Los Angeles. Decamping for a week-long recording session in the legendary recording studio complex East West, the fable goes that an uninterrupted spate of session magic ensued, out from which five acid jazz and soul bursters sprang forth. A curt selection of just five tracks, of which there were many more recorded during the LA session, the likes of 'Purify', 'It Must Be Love' and 'When The Game Is Played On You' span the whole gamut of modern soul, from the bright to the bare-bones but beguiling.

Review: Slang Spirituals is soul singer and producer Lady Blackbird's latest full-length album, following up the EP of the same name released earlier in 2024. A collaborative wall of sound, scaled in collaboration with producer and guitarist Chris Seefried - as well as her very own, devoted session musical retinue, consisting of Kenneth Crouch (Keys), Tamar Barzilay (drums) and Johnny Flaughers (bass) - this bright, yet equally, extimately melancholic record is a twin paean to two superficially opposed themes: soul-purgation and soul-complication. 'Let Not' and 'Purify' make up the former front face, heliolatrically facing up to the brighter sides of life with yellowed guitar fuzzes and boundless vocals, while B-siders 'Whatever His Name' and 'When The Game Is Played On You' prefer to explore the darker side of the moon, deploying various mellotrons, pump organs and cross-sticks to acoustically muse on the inverse pains that are betrayal, longing, and graft.
