Review: Legendary British outfit Saint Etienne returned with their 12th studio album late last year, and now it lands on vinyl via Heavenly Recordings. A much-awaited follow-up to 2021's I've Been Trying To Tell You, this ambient collection offers a gentle, immersive experience designed to ease the noise of daily life. It was produced with Augustin Bousfield and blends songs, spoken word and rain-soaked textures into a seamless dreamscape, all recorded between Saltaire in the north and Hove down on the south coast. It captures the fragile space between waking and sleep with highlights like 'Half Light' and 'Preflyte'. As such, The Night is best experienced on headphones and is ideal for late hours, reflection and introspection.

Review: Originally released in 1977 (the year of punk's simultaneous birth and more notably, death), (I'm) Stranded has gone on to become, not only one of the most vital pieces of OG Aussie punk, but commonly considered as one of the quintessential early blueprints for an entire generation of artists. Staying on course and not even wading into the creative differences that would soon loom large over each subsequent follow up, this box set arrives as a joint collaboration between L.A. garage rock label In The Red, Universal Music Australia and spearheaded by Feel Presents and The Saints founder Ed Kuepper (later Laughing Clowns), who collectively deliver the original LP remastered for the time in four decades, along with never-before-pressed-to-wax bonus discs of a five-song live performance from Paddington Town Hall in Sydney in 1977, the band's full set from the Hope & Anchor Front Row Festival, London November 1977, all three tracks from the 1977 This Perfect Day 12" and all four tracks from 1977's 1-2-3-4 double 7" single, as well as the previously unreleased 1976 demo mix of the (I'm) Stranded LP. Also boasting a 28 page 12" x 12" photo essay of the band covering their origins from 1973 through the end of '77, authorised band history, an 8" x 10" 1976 promo photo, and sticker, this is fan service and an album celebratory box set done right.

Review: You had us at Sakamoto. Or rather you had us at "excerpts from Ryuichi Sakamoto's time working under Nippon Colombia's label, Better Days. First released in 1992, this 12-track compilation runs from tracks that appeared on the Japanese synth legend's debut album, Thousand Knives, first released in 1978, through to songs written with the iconic session group KYLYN, featuring celebrated guitar great Kazumi Watanabe. Ever the auteur, even if you didn't know this was Sakamoto in proper landmark mode, there's no chance the sounds here could really be confused for anyone or anything else. It's mature and intelligent, yet strangely - and typically - fun, childlike and a little cartoonish, sharing as much in common with experimental electronica that was emerging during the 1970s and 1980s as video game scores from the 1990s.

Review: Reading-based folktronica and dreampop band Saloon were John Peel favourites during their five-and-a-half-year run at the turn of the century. They frequently appeared in his Festive 50 countdown with their languid lo-fi sound often being compared to what Belle and Sebastian might sound like in space. This new release compiles their two Peel Sessions from 2001 and 2003 and makes them available for the first time on wax. The album includes their celebrated track 'Girls Are The New Boys,' which topped Peel's Festive 50 in 2002.

Review: Saltpig are the cross-continental psychedelic duo of US singer and multi-instrumentalist Mitch Davis and Italian drummer Fabio Alessandrini (ex-Annihilator), and together they've crafted a self-titled debut as tart as their moniker. Pulling from retro psych fuzzed out bluesy desert rock, yet interspliced with avant-garde prog noodling, and even forays into the sludgy, heftier side of proto-doom metal; the pair conjure a Venn Diagram style of intersectionality between the genre's early roots and more menacing modernised approach. Lengthy instrumental dirges are broken up by Davis' esoteric croon, while a lysergic hue weaves around the hypnagogic sonic tapestries like the passing of initial nausea before the overwhelming come up.

Review: The aptly titled Morbid Metal offers up the ultimate fan service to devout worshippers of Swiss industrial black metal legends Samael, who whilst nowadays are renowned for their uniquely oppressive and mechanical machinations, began life in a far more primitive, traditional sense. Spread out across 5 x 7" picture disc EPs, the box set collates all of the band's recorded output preceding their 1991 debut full-length Worship Him, including Into The Infernal Storm Of Evil (Demo recorded in March 1988), Macabre Operetta (Rehearsal recorded in May 1988), Medieval Prophecy (7" EP recorded in October 1988), From The Dark To Black (Promo recorded in 1989), and Morbid Metal (Live in Rotterdam in 1992), while also featuring a 120-page hardcover book including a new in-depth interview with mastermind Vorphalack as well as liner notes, unseen pictures, a patch and a hand-numbered certificate. Strictly limited to 500 copies, this collection provides a rare glimpse at the origins of one of the most vital purveyors of underground metallic extremity.

Review: Bassist and composer Joe Sanders shows he is unafraid to explore every side of his artistry with his new, genre-blurring album Parallels. It is a mix of live recordings with Seamus Blake, Logan Richardson and Gregory Hutchinson and dreamy, studio-crafted pieces with Jure Pukl and Taylor Eigsti that, between them, bridge signature East Coast grit and famous West Coast introspection. From intimate family moments to lush Italo-disco textures, Sanders threads his acoustic and electronic sensibilities into a cohesive overall listen that has plenty of fearless jazz exploration, deep groove and all-important emotional nuance. It is the sound of a musician at the height of his creative powers who is as curious as he is versatile.

Review: Finally reissued for its 50th anniversary, Love In Us All is a cosmic, uncompromising statement from legendary jazz cat Pharoah Sanders. This vital piece of the free jazz canon was released as his final Impulse! album and starts with 'Love Is Everywhere' which radiates transcendent beauty with layered horns, cascading piano and a repeated vocal mantra evoking the spirit of Coltrane's seminal 'A Love Supreme'. The flip, For John' is raw, chaotic and a furious outpouring of free jazz energy. Long out of print but here remastered, this essential release showcases Sanders' vision in its most fearless, spiritual form.

Review: In spring 2002, this collection of compositions by the renowned Alfonso Santisteban debuted on CD and soon became a staple on dance floors at exclusive clubs and events like that year's Fashion Week and the grand reopening of the iconic Cafe Oliver. It was also embraced by Berlin's lounge, easy listening and Brazilian-inspired groove scene so found plenty of homes on various compilations of the era. Tracks like the funk-fueled 'Persecucion,' the Brazilian-tinged 'Brincadeira' and the kitschy delight 'Strawberry Flavor' cemented its status as an artistic gem. This is the sort of diverse and tasteful record that will come in handy in myriad different settings and seasons.

Review: UK-based Australian musician Joel Sarakula's new album Soft Focus blends his many influences across soft-rock, funk, AOR, soulful disco and indie pop, all wrapped in a gentle, laid-back aesthetic. The album's name refers to a photographic technique that creates a warm, flattering blur-an apt metaphor for Sarakula's hazy and nostalgic soundscapes. Soft Focus includes two tracks produced by Shawn Lee: the disco-infused 'I'll Get By Without You' and the relaxed, '80s-inspired 'Telephone Calls.' Other standout tracks are the Latin rock of 'King of Spain,' the soulful 'Back For Your Love' and the psychedelic 'Bird of Paradise.'

Review: Sasha's latest album was initially created to soundtrack Da Vinci Genius, a unique, immersive, multi-media exhibition celebrating the life and work of the inventor, artist and all-round Renaissance man Leonardo Da Vinci. Crafted in cahoots with a string of contributors to his popular Scene Delete set, the score (and subsequently this album) cannily combines neo-classical music (inspired by both vintage and more contemporary composers), the sweeping grandiosity of movie soundtracks, bubbly electronica, colourful ambient soundscapes, occasional nods to 15th century choral music and Sasha's usual emotive musical motifs. As the set progresses, it eases closer to the dancefloor sound the veteran DJ/producer is most famous for - which will delight his legion of fans - without ever fully committing. This is, after all, an immersive, eyes-closed listening experience first and foremost.

Review: Satellites' self-titled 2020 debut album won plenty of plaudits, with critics the world over hailing the Tel Aviv-based band's blend of vintage, Turkish style psychedelic folk-rock and dancefloor adjacent grooves indebted to funk, soul and disco. Aylar, the six-piece's belated sequel, continues in this vein, with the band arguably being bolder with their musical choices. For proof, check the cosmic strut of opener 'Tisaldi Mehmet Elmi', a psych-funk transformation of a traditional Turkish folk song, the low-slung grooves and sweet retro-organ melodies of 'Midnight Sweat', the gritty, thrusting and hallucinatory 'Yok Yok' and the future dancefloor anthem that is psychedelic Turkish disco gem 'Zuluf Dokolmus Yuze'.

Review: Mafia Musik is the fourth studio album from Los Angeles rapper D. Savage and it captures his journey from SoundCloud sensation to rap star. Breaking onto the scene in 2016 with '30 Round Clip,' D. Savage has crafted Mafia Musik as a 13-track statement piece filled with high-energy hits like 'Kome On,' 'Dirty Dan' and 'Joker, Pt. 2.' Known for his melodic yet intense style, D. Savage is a prominent figure in the 'plugg' sub-genre who delivers sharp, airy flows that keep the momentum alive. Mafia Musik stands as a powerful foundation and more than signals a promising future for this rising artist.

Originally released in 1988, this album features ten tracks including the standout theme song 'Follow Me' from her starring role in the drama Exciting Rock 'n' Roll Street. Definitely, because musically it is packed with goodness as Schlammpeitziger explores a world of loose but engaging rhythms. These subversive sounds play with exotic vocals, dubby hi-hats, new-age flutes, motorik grooves and spoken word samples. It's experimental but never forgets the magic of melody and rhythm to hypnotise, all with a twist of pop fun.

Review: G. S. Schray's new solo album, Whispered Something Good, brings with it musical growth and offers a fitting soundtrack for daydreamers and adventurers alike. The album begins in the darkness of 'Unlit Center' with elliptical jazz guitar phrases. Double bass, synthesiser, and piano converse in 'In Tears Twice A Page,' leading to the reflective 'Another Haunted Mirror.' Synth mist and trumpet cut through decisively like sunlight. As the album progresses, firmer rhythms emerge, with 'Prelude for Probably' featuring triumphant drums and horns. The album closes with 'Gone in Amber,' an instrumental art-pop piece exploring distant birdsong and faint synth flickers. Listening to Whispered Something Good is like delving into an imagination, where subliminal melodies bloom into rhisomatic musical shapes.

Featuring ten powerful dubs from the dubmaster himself, it opens with the masterful 'Everlasting Version' which is a fierce take on the iconic You Know A Rude Boy/Survival rhythm. The tracks were produced by Roy Cousins and recorded with the Roots Radics at Channel One and then taken to Tubby's studio for final dubbing perfection. This release really is a cornerstone of dub that very much captures the vital era's sonic innovations and Tubby's unmatched production skill.

With a program of original compositions, of which two-thirds are by Moussay and the rest by Sclavis, they create an intimate and chamber-like dialogue where lyrical moments and playful inventiveness collide. Their improvisations flow patiently and explore each theme with a rare creativity. This warm, exploratory approach highlights the depth of their musical connection, and it was all recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France in March 2024.

Review: This seminal collaborative album by Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson was released in 1975 but gets a special reissue for Record Store Day 2024. It blends jazz, soul and acute political commentary with Scott-Heron's powerful spoken-word lyrics alongside Jackson's innovative woodwind arrangements. The title track reflects the duo's global perspective and highlights the struggles for freedom and equality that are still so relevant today. The album's fusion of groove, intellect and activism marked a significant moment in Scott-Heron's career. With its poignant social messages and rich instrumentation, this record remains a timeless work of political and musical significance.

Review: A warm welcome back to long-serving French duo Scratch Massive, a DJ/production twosome who have been active locally and internationally since 1994. Nox Anima is, somewhat remarkably, the duo's first studio album since 2018. Rooted in the stylish, atmospheric and occasionally moody new wave sound they've been developing for decades, the album frequently pairs dark and clandestine analogue and modular synth sounds - throbbing, arpeggio-style sequences and ghostly chords - with metronomic or sparse beats, moments of melodic positivity, spacey electronics and whispered or sung female lead vocals. It's a musical blend that pays dividends far more often than not, making Nox Anima a must-check for fans of leftfield synth pop and chilly coldwave sounds.

Review: This 1988 classic is the second full-length album from Chicago pop-punk pioneers Screeching Weasel. The album's quirky title references a phrase coined by friend Matt Carlson, who also inspired the band's name. Marking their first release on the Roadkill label which the band helped establish itself, the record is credited with shaping the future of pop-punk and skate-punk and for blending sharp humour with a melodic edge. This limited edition includes one black LP and one green LP featuring a bonus Live 88 set, an eight-page booklet with an in-depth interview with Ben Weasel, all packaged in a striking gold gatefold sleeve.

Review: Scruscru and Los Protos hook up on the former's ever-reliable label for some more funk-fuelled and sample-heavy madness. This eight-tracker draws on the best of Library, jazz, hip hop and soul and collides elements of all of those together with some raw, and what sounds like, MPC beats, all tapped out with a lovably loose vibe. Some like 'Local Sugar Diggers' look up towards a sunny, cloudless sky, others like 'Dreams Of Sonora' are swaggering broken beat workouts with sensuous sax lines setting a steamy tone. 'Por Do Sol Em Shelekhmet' is another highlight with its aloof, angelic vocal tones.

Review: In autumn 2022, Seahawks, which is Lo Recordings' mainman Jon Tye and Pete Fowler, arrived in Los Angeles to craft a downtempo homage to California's visionary allure. Instead, illness struck, sidelining the duo for a week. Upon recovery, they regrouped at Brian Foote's synth haven to channel their experience into this, a lush, elevated exploration of post-sickness psychedelia. Inspired by 70s vibes, Harry Nilsson and warm Rhodes tones, the album radiates ambient exotica and cosmic jazz. Tracks like 'Sail Across The Moon' and 'Falling Deep' evoke astral bliss while poetic samples and Balearic grooves enrich the journey. Tye calls it their most vibrant creation yet and we agree.

Review: Arriving almost exactly three months after its predecessor, HiFi Sean and David McAlmont's third collaborative full-length is lightly a conceptual flip side to 2024's Daylight - a "dusk till dawn" night drive sequel, as they put it. To provide a distinctly different sonic sheen to the album that preceded it, the duo has reached for slow, soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics, strobe-lit synths and musical motifs forged in darker, if still colourful, tones. Add in McAlmont's honeyed, effortlessly soulful vocals, and you have another genuine gem from the 1990s survivors. Highlights include Blessed Madonna collaboration 'The Comedown', the tactile bliss of 'Goodbye Drama Queen', the huggable wooziness of 'High With You' and the heartfelt sweep of 'Star'.

Review: You'd have to be some kind of human not to have a soft spot for Seasick Steve. Having graced us with a relentless list of amazing albums, and amazing album titles - Dog House Music, I Started Out With Nothin', You Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks, Keepin' The Horse Between Me and the Ground - his legacy is well and truly cast in cement. As is his reputation as a straight talking, blues peddling, guitar modifying doyen of drawly balladry and raucous barroom anthems. A Trip a Stumble a Fall Down on Your Knees is classic Steve, and yet it's also a move on from recent outings such as Blues In Mono, a collection of largely solo, acoustic, stripped back offerings. Here then we're fully plugged in and rolling deep with an entourage, the result being a record that feels as humid and atmospheric as it does late night and gruff. The quest to find America again seems to be over for now then.

Review: Deep Valley is a new collaborative work by Australian artists Seaworthy aka Cameron Webb and Matt Rosner and they came together for it during a week-long residency at Bundanon Art Museum in New South Wales. The property which was gifted to the Australian public by artists Arthur and Yvonne Boyd in the 1990s offers a unique landscape along the Shoalhaven River and is surrounded by sandstone cliffs and diverse wildlife. Drawing inspiration from Boyd's belief that "you can't own a landscape," Deep Valley combines the inspiration of that setting with environmental recordings, guitars, piano, and electronic processing all of which aim to highlight the transient nature of ecosystems and encourage you to reconnect with the sounds of nature.

With four 12"s, all 10 cuts get generous wax space and sound amazing as a result. Especially highlights such as the Spirit-like super charge of 'Sequence 5', the cosmic jungle thrust of 'Outer Worlds', the powerful and provocative 'Thoughts Run Free' with Rupture legend and killer MC Blackeye. And that's just for starters; the Bjorn Berglund-collaborated and Samuel Lancine-fronted downtempo cut 'Diamonds' is a sense-arresting moment and the dreamy finale 'Progression'. Seba, we salute you.

Review: Over Under marks a vital moment in Secondo's artistic evolution as he mixes up the functional with the experimental in-house and techno. Reflecting two decades of exploration, this new album recalls his early production style while incorporating lessons from the years. It opens with the kosmische pulse of 'Occhi Nuovi' and moves through various tempos and moods, from club tracks like 'Unlikely Companions' to deeper, reflective moments such as 'Solar Funk'. The album's progression weaves a carefully crafted narrative, blending alien funk, mid-tempo grooves and jazz-inspired texture that all shine bright.

Review: Secret Garden is the Norwegian-Irish duo of Rolf Lovland and violinist Fionnuala Sherry and here they celebrate the 30th anniversary of their iconic debut, Songs from a Secret Garden. First released in 1995, the album won over global audiences with its blend of classical and folk, laced with Celtic and Norwegian emotion and some subtle new age undertones. It features the Eurovision-winning track 'Nocturne', which helped launch the duo into international acclaim. Elsewhere, there are whimsical melodies, ancient flutes, Lord of the Rings style Middle Age soundscapes, heartfelt emotions and plenty of clean, serene and timeless sounds that still offer great catharsis three decades on.

Through The Static
Review: Four years ago, Jon Linksey brought his Sectra project to Tectonic to the first time, serving up an impossible-to-pigeonhole set that combined his love of abstract noise, drone, industrial, techno and warped dancehall. The producer expands on these ideas on Through The Static, his first album to be released on anything other than cassette. In some ways it was designed with the CD format in mind, with the 13 'official tracks' - decidedly dystopian, angular and frequently intense affairs full of mutant rhythms and flashes of genuine musical emotion - being joined by a five-track bonus EP that can apparently be heard "through" the sound of static bolted onto the end of the EP. It's an interesting and unusual idea, but it's the adventurous and experimental qualities of the main album that makes it such a vital listen.

The Deep Blue Okay
Review: Rebecca Taylor arrives at third album A Complicated Woman in a very different place to where she was before the release of her previous full-length, the Mercury Prize-nominated Prioritise Pleasure. Now a bona-fide pop star, the South Yorkshire chanteuse now has to deal with heightened expectations and her own experience of fame. By the sound of A Complicated Woman, she's handling both with aplomb. That's not to say that the lyrics avoid difficult subjects - her own worries remain front and centre - but the delightfully grandiose production, extensive use of choirs and orchestras, and Taylor's own penchant for penning stadium-sized sing-alongs deliver a maximal pop gem fitting her genuine star status. Rotherham's finest has never sounded so good (or, it should be added, explicit - there are some genuinely adult themes on display).

The former has laid down endless amounts of interesting sounds over the years and Poiesis now joins those hallowed ranks. It is aptly described as "a paranoid party-starter cast against a menacing greyscale backdrop of impressive dystopian grandeur." The production from Sensational is on point and a mix of basted and dubbed out while the bars remind of early underground rap greats - like Def Jux rewired through a more contemporary sound.

Review: We guarantee you won't have heard percussion like Serpente for some time. Offering three tracks of disorientating, complex beats, from 'Perda Outra' to 'Dobra De Ra', the triptych is rhythmically challenging but absolutely captivating, and certainly the kind of thing that's going to prove demanding for anyone obsessed with smooth, clean transitions in a mix. Flip this wild six pack and CZN's trio of tunes are similarly beguiling. Space age desert folk drums, suppressed ritualistic thrumming, and top-heavy pulsating arrangements that seem poised to generate high energy while never managing to release the tension. Quality bits we don't really know what else to say about - genre obsessives need not apply, this is no place for you or your structures and rules. But trust us, letting go of such ideals and diving in here will be one of the best things you do this week.

Review: A well recorded, fascinating glimpse into the earlier days of the most notorious punk band of all time, captured at a show at the rarely acknowledged 76 Club in Burton-on-Trent. It's a suitable setting, of course, as British punk was the voice of the suburbs and the small towns around the UK that, ironically, all so often banned them from visiting. The material that would form their only studio album - surely one of the most seminal LPs of all time - Never Mind The Bollocks... was still taking shape at this point, with 'New York' and 'Seventeen' present but nestling under working titles alongside non-album original 'I Wanna Be Me'. There are also outings for a selection of cover versions that show the influences that shaped the revolutionary sound about to turn music on its head, from The Stooges' 'No Fun' and The Who's 'Substitute' to the Dave Berry 1964 single flip track 'Don't Gimme No Lip Child' and The Monkees' '(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone'. Top chaos for cash fun.

Review: The infamous, ill-fated jaunt the Sex Pistols took across the US in January of 1978 has become the stuff of punk legend due to a myriad of factors. Under poor management, signed to a label unfamiliar with how to market such an outlier on their roster, performing to more curious patrons than genuine fans, all circumstances culminated in a burning out in real time, captured via these live performances. For the first time, several of these shows have now been properly sequenced to reflect the debaucherous live sets in full with this pressing capturing a chaotic, unhinged, vital and feral set at the South East Music Hall in Atlanta, Georgia. Boasting timeless anthems from the snarling opening rendition of 'God Save The Queen' all the way up to the one-two punch finale of 'Pretty Vacant' and 'Anarchy In The UK', behind the energy is the sound of a group of misfits left to fend for themselves in a strange environment and lashing out the best (and only) way they knew how.

Review: Infamous, ill-fated and iconic all in equal measure, the Sex Pistols US tour of January 1978 has gone down in the annals of punk history as a chaotic state of affairs. Mismanaged by their team, stuck on a label only interested in their prowess for generating headlines and performing night after night to crowds more curious than engaged, the resulting jaunt would eventually lead to the band's total implosion. After years of these live recordings being distributed in piece-meal form, the recordings from this tour have finally been accurately sourced, re-sequenced and now delivered as individual live LPs with this pressing coming from their show at the Longhorns Ballroom in Dallas, Texas. The sheer exhaustion, frustration and oncoming burnout are evident through these feral performances, almost as if hearing the once youthful pioneers imploding in real time. Currently undertaking a costly world tour accompanied by former Gallows vocalist, Mr. Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes himself standing in for the now MAGA touting John Lydon, it's the closest fans will likely ever get to experiencing the Never Mind The Bollocks era, with these authentic real thing recordings coming in at a close second, delivered from the familiar comfort of your turntable.

Review: The ill-fated Sex Pistols US tour of January 1978 has become as infamous and discussed as the band themselves, as it came at a time of rife turmoil between members whilst it was potentially beginning to dawn on them how out of place they were on their label, how inconsiderate and mismanaged they were being treated and how much more of a travelling circus show those in attendance were paying to see rather than genuinely caring for the music or message in the same manner of their homegrown fanbase. This exhaustion, frustration and evident burnout was all captured during these live performances, which after several semi-coherent releases have finally been isolated, properly sequenced and finally deliver the closest fly-on-the-wall experience to these implosive shows yet. Taken from their set at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, this is peak pissed off Pistols on the cusp of their ultimate breaking point. With the likes of Slimzee, Trends, D.O.K, U.S.F and Youngsta all on side, the mood is tense and the textures are rough. Review: Shed's Towards East was originally made for Berlin's Dussmann store back in 2022. It's a very personal project that now gets reissued by The Final Experiment and it sounds superb. The Polish producer weaves in plenty of foggy and lo-fi ambient pads into these tracks, whether they are beatless vignettes or more low-end driven soundscapes such as 'Absolute.' On 'In Between (Fur Geli), yearning strings and a lonely motif amongst walls of melancholic synth done and 'September 5th' is another hazy memory with nostalgic overtones and loads of frayed edges and buried melodic wisps. It's techno, but not as we know it.

Reliquary blends trumpet, violin and modular synths into a fragmented, post-human soundscape that will send shivers down your spine. Inspired by the idea of a hard drive as a sacred archive, Shirken filters live recordings through neural networks and cooks up ghostly echoes of imagined sessions. The result is raw, contemplative ambient with a host of guests all adding to the evocative, filmic nature of these otherworldly soundscapes.

Review: Vocalist, composer, lecturer, performance artist. And we can throw visionary into the mix, too. Katya Shirshkova wears a number of different hats, each as innovative and creative as the next. However, few sound as good as when she's matched with celebrated musical architect David Maranha for a two-track single that's nigh-on impossible to describe. Let alone find much information about. We'll do our best to articulate, though. Le Heron and A Reuniono are polar opposites attracted by their overall impact. On the first, we have vocalisation taking on many forms and sounds, each as strange and beguiling as the next, and really showing the range human voices are capable of. Sometimes soothing, sometimes shrill. The second replaces this with an electric guitar, running through tune-ups, tune-downs, distorted crescendos, muffled breakdowns, and other out-of-this-world effects.

Review: Howard Shore is the renowned film composer known for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit soundtracks and now he releases a new album capturing three concerts he performed in Spring 2023 at the Maison de Radio France. Two concerts feature the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Ludwig Wicki and Bastien Stil, while the third highlights Shore's experimental works. The performances include soloists such as Olivier Doise and Raphaelle Moreau. Shore, a pioneer in contemporary film music, believes film music offers composers unique freedom for personal expression and backs that up with his work here.

Review: This Record Store Day 2025 exclusive marks the vinyl debut of First Love, Last Rites-the 1997 indie film soundtrack composed by D.C. alt-rock band Shudder To Think. The album features collaborations with Jeff Buckley, Liz Phair, Billy Corgan, John Doe and Robin Zander among more. Notably, Buckley's rendition of 'I Want Someone Badly' stands out as one of his final recordings and finds him delivering an emotionally charged performance. The soundtrack's blend of indie rock and poignant lyrics in fine vocals captures the film's introspective tone and now this limited edition release makes this '90s classic available on vinyl for the first time.

Review: British singer-songwriter Shura has spent some serious time, effort and thought on I Got Too Sad For My Friends. Six years, in fact. During that period, she's clearly learned at lot about life, love, loss, and whatever other L-word you can think of that means 'maturity' to those in the know. The result is a spectacularly accomplished collection that reveals an artist at their creative peak. To date, anyway. Cornerstone of the record, and the very first single, is 'Recognise', and this is perhaps the strongest case in point. From whispy and whispered opening, through full, cacophonous bloom, it's a track that keeps us in a beautiful dark until its monumental, joyful reveal. Elsewhere, 'Ringpull' and 'The World's Worst Girlfriend' betray a clear penchant for classic 1980s pop, while the likes of 'Online' seem to float in on a serene cloud of gentile pianos and hovering strings.

Review: Swedish duo SHXCXCHCXSH distort club music by using a refined, idiosyncratic palette that challenges functionality. As logophiles, they twist language into fragmented, barely recognisable sequences, reflecting their experimental process. Their new album marks their debut for Northern Electronics and showcases a broader exploration of sound. Spanning 15 tracks in style, it combines drone elements, shredded vocals and chaotic melodies to make for a dark, intense atmosphere. Interspersed with brooding yet effervescent breaks, ......t is their most focused and comprehensive work to date and it also pushes their sound into new territories.

Review: This record marks Sideshow's fifth full-length album in just four years and it comes at a time when his career is gaining significant momentum. Following notable collaborations with MIKE, The Alchemist and Boldy James as well as the release of two albums in 2023-2MM: Don't Just Stand There and Jam-Sideshow continues to build his reputation here with production from Popstar Benny, Alexander Spit, Sideshow himself and others. There are plenty of contemporary edges to this, as well as a subtle undercurrent of respect for the old school, and it is sure to take Sideshow to a whole other level once more.

Review: Sihir's Ular Akan Patuk is a debut LP that delivers fifteen minutes of intense hardcore reminiscent of a burning police station. The album features razor-sharp feedback and industrial sounds intertwined with traditional music to create a euphoric yet brutal experience. This collaboration of punk musicians from Colombia, Nusantara, Spain, and Sweden presents raw punk with crashing intent all driven by phased percussion. The striking artwork by Javanese artist Enka Komariah illustrates a supernatural narrative that enhances the album's thematic depth. With lyrics in Bahasa Melayu addressing issues from imperialism to women's rights, this one is a powerful, euphoric protest.
