Review: Originally released in 1969, Exciting Drums African Rock Party is the first album from Akira Ishikawa under his Count Buffalo alias. It's a wide-ranging affair which includes covers of contemporary standards such as 'You Keep Me Hanging On', 'Back In The U.S.S.R.' and 'Soul Limbo', all given a bold and brassy jazz revision by Ishikawa's band, which included Hiromasa Suzuki on piano, Masaoki Terakawa on bass and Takeru Muraoka on tenor sax. This is the first time it's been repressed since its release, so you can expect all Japanese jazz aficionados to be jumping on this one quickly.

Review: Hi-Phonic Big 15's Hi-Phonics Hi-Phonics album is a real curio from 1979 that deep diggers have long fawned over. It is the only album from this outfit and it was once reissued on CD in 2004 but never before on vinyl. Musically it blends reggae, soul and jazz-funk into gloriously musical tracks with lavish arrangements and a golden soul for late-night lounge spaces. At times romantic, at others playful, it's as likely to be heard at a sundown session on the beach in Ibiza as it is at a listening bar in London or a street party in Leeds.

Head Rock
Review: Head Rock by Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media offers a nostalgic journey into the Japanese jazz scene of 1970. Reminiscent of the film library albums from Italy, this album blends jazzy instrumentation with psychedelic rock elements, creating a unique sonic tapestry. While not a widely known Japanese album from the era, Head Rock provides pleasant grooves and moments of headphone bobbing enjoyment. The 2018 reissue on Columbia/Takt Jazz comes in a brilliant gatefold cover, making it a worthy addition to any collection. With original copies demanding steep prices, the reissue offers a more affordable option without compromising on quality. Head Rock is a worthwhile exploration of vintage Japanese jazz-rock fusion.

Review: Marking its debut on vinyl, Jiro Inagaki's groundbreaking jazz-rock album introduces a bold fusion of new rock elements, featuring Inagaki's vocals alongside Sammy and Yasushi Sawada for the first time. Backed by a stellar lineup including Masahiko Sato, Kimio Mizutani, and Hiro Yanagida, this reissue by Nipponophone underlines Inagaki's status as a maverick in Japanese jazz. Originally released in 1971, the album blends heavy rock grooves with an enigmatic allure, resonating deeply with collectors of rare groove worldwide. Inagaki, renowned for his saxophone work and production skills, has left an indelible mark not only in jazz but also as a sought-after session player for legends like Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra. This reissue reaffirms his legacy, offering a glimpse into his influential jazz-rock era.

Review: 'We Are!' was the very first opening theme for the TV anime version of One Piece, which first aired in 1999. The first analogue version of the 8cm single CD was released in November of that year. Sung by the franchise's in-house singer Hiroshi Kitadani, and bringing along with her a bursting, emphatic, nearing-on-frenzied composition, the theme instantly captures the vibe of One Piece; that of following Monkey D. Luffy and crew on serial whimsical piracies and carefree adventures, set against a more sinister backdrop of tyrannical secret police forces controlled by a World Government, in constant conflict with a Revolutionary Army.

Review: Woman by Monica Lassen & The Sounds is a rare and beautiful album that has finally been reissued on vinyl in 2024. Originally released in 1970, the album is a mix of easy listening and jazz-funk with a distinctly cinematic feel. The lack of vocals gives the music a dreamy and evocative quality, perfect for soundtracking your own mental movies. If you're a fan of either easy listening or jazz-funk, or if you're just looking for something new and different, we highly recommend checking out this rare piece of Japanese music. It's a truly unique and special album that deserves a place in any music lover's collection.

Review: Takeo Moriyama: still Japan's leading jazz drummer, and loved by many new and old fans. Since the late 1960s, Moriyama swept the free jazz world alongside the Yosuke Yamashita trio; yet after leaving the group, the sublime talent-fluid Moriyama had nebulised in its wake was soon condensed into an ensemble, evolving and deepening his musicality in a more melodic and rhythmic direction. Smile is the album-bound result of this mid-career movement: a five-piece spiritual opus, packed with bright glissandos and frabjous horns, all perfectly positioned to contrast Moriyama's mesmeric hold over the rhythm.

Review: Taeko Onuki's latest release is a live album pressed up to vinyl and capturing her full performance from Tokyo in November 2023. The show featured a seven-piece band with Hirokazu Ogura on guitar, Masato Suzuki on bass, Takashi Numazawa and Tatsuo Hayashi on drums, Febien Reza Panet on piano, and Toshiyuki Mori and Shohei Amamori on keyboards. This album showcases Onuki's dynamic performance with a talented ensemble and a rich array of sounds from the original multi-tracks. It's a great snapshot of the event as well as being a superb contemporary pop exploration across four sides of vinyl.

Review: Shigeo Sekito's influential Special Sound Series Vol. 2, finally reissued on sky blue vinyl, celebrates the visionary Electone pioneer's unparalleled talent and global impact. Originally released in 1975, this seminal work showcases Sekito's talent of the Electone, blending fresh rhythms and whimsical melodies that have impressed audiences across genres - from hip-hop to dream pop. 'The Word II', a standout track famously covered by Mac DeMarco on 'Chamber of Reflection,' catapulted Sekito's music to international recognition, inspiring artists like Travis Scott and Quavo's Huncho Jack. Sekito, known also for his piano workds under the name Ken Akishino, pushed the boundaries of sound manipulation and tone color, creating compositions described as both meticulous and daringly innovative. His legacy, bolstered by this meticulously remastered reissue and accompanied by comprehensive liner notes from Chee Shimizu, continues to shape the future of Electone music, resonating deeply with enthusiasts worldwide.

Review: Hiromasa Suzuki, a legendary composer and arranger, has been a vital figure in the Japanese music scene, contributing significantly to jazz, film, television, and commercials. Known for his innovative approach, Suzuki was deeply involved with influential artists like Terumasa Hino, Akira Ishikawa, and Jiro Inagaki during their most groundbreaking periods. His 1976 album High-Flying is a expertly crafted example to his forward-thinking creativity and remains a cornerstone of the WaJazz genre. Produced by Jiro Inagaki, High-Flying features a stellar lineup, including Shuichi Murakami on drums, Akira Okazawa on electric bass, and Masayoshi Takanaka on electric guitar. Suzuki's masterful compositions and arrangements shine through tracks like 'Screwdriver' and 'Scramble,' blending pre-fusion and crossover elements seamlessly. The album also includes contributions from Jun Fukamachi on keyboards and synthesiser, and Kayoko Ishu on vocals for select tracks. Recorded at Nippon Columbia Studio No. 2, this sought-after reissue captures the essence of Suzuki's groundbreaking work. Act fast to secure a copy of this essential masterpiece.

Review: Described by Light In The Attic as a 'monumental work that captures the transformation of Japanese jazz', Variation is a buzzing free jazz juggernaut that effortlessly bridges the gap between chaos and cool. First released in 1969, a year considered as the absolute pinnacle of free jazz in the nation (after which many artists also began to incorporate a national flair into their music), Masahiko Togashi was but one of a few composers to achieve widespread recognition for his craft at the time. This collab with Hiroshi Suzuki hears cuts like 'Suzu No Uta' blissfully enthrall with gossamer tuned percussion and trembling metal shakers, while ordered cacophonies like the closer 'Passion' describe the ups and downs of love through many a scalic decrescendo.

Review: Shigeru Suzuki has been involved with plenty of cult, hard-to-find albums from Band Wagon to Pacific and they have all been reissued of late. Next up is Reservation Calendar alongside Sunset Hills Hotel, another glorious synth work that transports you to a place of pure and clean musical bliss in an instant, as does so much jazz from the Far East. This record takes in mellifluous downbeat pieces like 'Silver Snow Shining' as well as lovably kitsch 80s tunes like 'April First' and the more introspective sounds of 'November Eyes' with its lush tropical percussion and yawning soft rock riffs.

Review: 1969 was the year free improvisation took off in Japan, and this soundtrack album is one of the sparks which lit the flame. Isolation was originally commissioned as a soundtrack to a 'landscape film' entitled Abbreviated Serial Killer, focused on one Norio Nagayama. Masahiko Togayashi teamed up with Motoki Takagi and the duo thought it better to approach the subject without attempting any composition. In the process the two pioneers of free jazz created a landmark work which stands as one of the all-time most important documents of Japanese free jazz.

Review: Hitomi Toyama's 'Sweet Soul Music' originally made it to wax last year, when the track appeared as part of a rare Japanese funk compilation curated by the sound's brightest stars, Wamono. Now, though, it gets a proper release on 7", and is backended by the sultry B-side 'Wanna Kiss', which sounds pitched up and chirpy in its shrill alto vocals, which assure us we're held. The A, meanwhile, is as horny (in both senses of the word) as ever, quite obviously singing the praises of "sweet soul music... I love you!"

Review: The 80s Japanese pop culture is back with the re-release of Toyama 'Penny' Hitomi's two popular albums. Among them, the 1983 album Next Door is a perfect blend of American and Japanese city pop, making it a must-listen for music lovers. The black vinyl pressing of this limited edition album is of high-quality Japanese import, bringing back the nostalgia of a classic era. This is the first time it has been released on wax since 1983, making it a rare and valuable addition to any music collection.

Review: We're thrilled to see and help announce the reissue of Hitomi "Penny" Tohyama's iconic 1983 album Sexy Robot, a cornerstone of 80s Japanese AOR and city-pop. This reissue celebrates Tohyama's fifth release, which captures the vibrant New York sound of the era and paved the way for the Beacon Sound movement in Japan. The album features Tohyama's silky vocals paired with infectious beats and some of the best city-pop of the era. Sexy Robot stands out for its blend of smooth melodies and energetic rhythms, presenting an authentic slice of 80s music culture. This vinyl reissue offers a pristine listening experience, although the record has some noticeable scuffs that do not impact playback. This reissue is a fantastic entry point into the world of city-pop and a celebration of Hitomi Tohyama's enduring legacy.

Review: These unreleased recordings from 1970 are an absolute treasure for soul jazz aficionados. Serving as an essential companion to the originally released Vol.1/2 recordings, they offer a dreamlike experience that you never want to end. Sony Japan has truly delivered with this release and offer it up with outstanding recording quality that captures every nuance and emotion of the music. It's a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the raw energy and creativity of this era so is a must-have addition to any music collection.
