Techno
Review: Dreamlogicc and SW are two standouts in the outlier world of leftfield house music, and they find a perfect home on the equally out-there label that is Kimochi. This is the first time they have been on the same bit of wax (though both have been here many times as solo artists) and hopefully, it won't be the last. There is plenty of unusual rhythm work here with wonky grooves that are enriched with a world of superbly futuristic sound designs. All of these hard to define cuts are serious curveballs that bring a great element of WTF to any set, so do not sleep and add them to your arsenal ASAP.

Review: Drumcode presents the second iteration of their soon-to-be-long-running 'Elevate' series, which in their usual audacious fashion features no less than eight label debutantes take the reigns on huge room techno production duties. The compilation's manifesto is simple: platform a broader range of emerging artists on Drumcode and help elevate the next generation to make strides in their careers. With that, we have the delight of selecting our picks of the bunch (all personal preference, of course, though you can trust our picks are educated guesses): in this case, it's got to be the slightly wonky and out-of-the-ordinary ones, those being Simina Grigoriu's 'Global Soldier' and Marie Vaunt's 'ADSR'.

Review: Berlin producer Ede returns after their 2023 Innervisions debut 'Poptroit', this time for another melodic techno forward-facer. With a papillary front cover - resembling the suckers of an octopus or the polyps of a fantasy coral - we doubt the trypophobics out there will be at ease with this one. That is, at least until they hear the soothing progressives of 'I Am Wavy' and 'Odyssey', which build through and cleanse classic acid, rave and bleep motifs. The latter track has an incredible vocal breakdown, saturating and processing its stabs and chirp-hits just right.

Review: Following a surprisingly extended hiatus of three years, the admirable Earthly Measures imprint is ready to unleash the fourth volume in their Earthly Tapes series. This time round, they've not only chosen to showcase the work of more female artists, but also producers and musicians with "native roots connected to five countries in South America and Europe". Musically, it furthers the label's "electronica plus nature" ethos, flitting between deliciously dubbed-out ambient chuggers (Manu Ela), Latin-tinged slow motion dub disco (Barda), percussion-rich wooziness (Shigara), locked-in low-slung house hypnotism (Sahale & Samarana), tropical house sunshine (Carla Velenti) and chugging Balearic dreaminess (NoN Project).

Review: Merman is a brand-new label from Spain bringing some searing techno heat. This debut 12" is a fierce four-track with different arts taking care of each aural assault, starting with Elektrabel. 'Sernafet' is a manic mix of loopy snares and pulsing synths, metallic drum sounds and sweeping filters. SPIDJ brings a little more heavyweight techno funk to 'Fuerza Analogica' and Akenaton then gets raw, dark and dirty with the industrial menace of 'Cambio De Actitud.' The Zenobit3 shuts down with some spritely electro-tinged techno on 'Milikis Suffering'.

Review: Andrew 'Emperor Machine' Meecham and French vocalist Severine Moultin enjoyed working on their first collaborative single, 2021's 'Dance Par Amour', so last year reunited in the studio to record a follow-up. 'Your Own Style' follows a similar sonic template, with Mouletin singing in accented English atop a typically analogue-heavy Meecham backing track laden with bubbly bass, delay-laden electric piano motifs, layered percussion and the producer's trademark synth squiggles (a feature of his work since the days he was working with Dean Meredith as Chicken Lips). The song is presented in three variations: the stretched-out and pleasingly loose 'Alternative Mix'; the sparse, effects-laden and mid-80s influenced 'Dub Vocal'; and the warmer, subtly funkier 'Fun Dub'.

His machines are in fine fettle once more as crisp, kicking electro rhythms are overlaid with bright, silvery, pixelated melodic fireworks on the sublime 'Organoiods'. Review: Established as a record label some four years ago, Live At Robert Johnson have really come to the fore as representing the best of contemporary European deep house alongside the likes of Dial and Running Back. Here, the Frankfurt institution returns to their recent triumphant Lifesaver compilation with this addendum 12" release featuring the productions from Roman Flugel, Lauer, San Laurentino and Tuff City Kids. Flugel opens proceedings with the rough and moody "More Is Not Enough" which brandishes a beat that can't help but get in your face. This is complemented by the calmer, sumptuous New Beat stylings of Lauer's "Hector" and the richly colourful "Final Landing" from San Laurentino. "People Is A Crackhead (Tuff Hamlet Riddim)" is not only the best track title in a hot minute but yet another original dancefloor slayer from Gerd Janson and Lauer's Tuff City Kids, opting for the Germanic digi dub meets tuff house route.

Review: The influential 90s IDM and techno act Future Sound of London continues to delve into their early career with the reissue of The Pulse EP Vol 2, originally released in 1991. This EP exemplifies the early techno sound, blending rave elements with the more intelligent and linear side of electronic dance music. Review: First unveiled on his fine 2023 album Bruno & The Birds, 'Let Me Go' is one of rising star Jullian Gomes' most sumptuous and effortlessly soulful tracks to date - a gorgeous blend of shuffling deep house drums, star-lit chords, gentle melodies and eyes-closed vocals made in collaboration with Japanese legend Kuniyuki Takahashi and singer Sio. Embodying associations of "heavyweight machinery, minimal influence and an outlaw spirit" as enthused in their bio, 'DLC' and its Steve O'Sullivan SOS remix strut an omnipotent variety of influences, from bleep techno to dubby minimal, as we relish the surplus joy embodied in the gaming concept of downloadable content. Review: A label's first release is always a big one which hints at what to expect in the long term and for that reason Introspective debuts with this new five track compilation. They say that "Instinctive Senses is a compilation focusing on precise and cutting sonorities." We say it is a fresh techno offering with plenty of interesting details. Grafin drops 'Vespers' which is tightly looped and quick as hell then SDB & B2 get more dark, heavy and gritty on the twisted 'Reunite.' The flip side kick off with more rough and ready hard edged techno from Specific Objects, sleek tribal loops from Versus on 'Those Things' and Nano Rinnegato gets paranoid and revs up the sirens on 'Ghetto K.'

Review: The Yummy imprint springs back into action with its third EP and as we expected, its a right corker. Newbie David Gunther comes through with "Lemonad", a distinctly tropical twist consisting of charming flurries of exotica, a delicate kick pattern and pseudo-steel pan melodies. Shakarchi and Straneus drop "Hissmusik" on the B-side, a seductive and r&b-flavoured party tune, whereas Local Talk's HNNY remixes it into a considerably housier affair with the help of a kick and a few swings of percussion.

Review: Techno tachyons Midi Mode, based in Ireland, provide a home for "warped and twisted" sounds and those who create them. After five vaporwave-tinged, reality-bending debut EPs from the likes of Ikeaboy and Power, they now present their very first selectors V/A EP on a gooey green wax edition. It's quite the assembly of Eireann techno royalty, with a host of seasoned players lead by probably the country's most esteemed DJ, Sunil Sharpe, as well as Kerrie and Wexford's Lee Holman. Quality is, naturally, at a consistently high label - with closer 'Phase-One' proving an especially computational, objectivist, mad, pitiless track.

Review: Rocksteady from Japanese crew Inokasira Rangers, whom've here teamed up with singer Hikari Suzuki for a cutely delivered cover of the Americana song 'Tonight You Belong To Me' by Nancy Sinatra. Performed in a "skinhead reggae" manner, this is a mysterious but fun version of the erstwhile lolloping 60s pop version. On the flip comes a curveball in the versioned form of one of the greatest-selling singles of all time, 'Ue o Muite Arukou' (aka. 'Sukiyaki' in English-speaking markets), originally sung by Kyu Sakamoto and again retaken by the Rangers.

There's a Balearic tint to these harmonious jams, which melt into each other like one extended blend for the terraza of your dreams. Review: Minibar's endless quest for the freshest kinds of minimal continues with this collaboration from emergent partnership Max Jacobson & Snad. You would have previously spotted the pair on Lowris' AEternum Music in 2021, and they're continuing to come up with the goods on this crisp and classy four-tracker. 'Mohugan' thrives on the knotty, tracky grooves you expect at least somewhere on a Minibar release, while 'Br2' cools things out with some elegant pad tones atop those snappy beat patterns. 'Truthers' takes things even deeper down with its whispers of melody, while 'Morning Du' gets back to business good and proper with a freaky after hours workout that will never let you down.

Review: Though mostly known for their colourful and soul-drenched house, Defected can also do more physical and tech-leaning sounds as exemplified on this new EP. It features a mix of new school tastemakers with Jansons opening up with the old school breaks and bars of 'Hypnotic' (feat Dope Earth Alien) then American star LP Giobbi layers up the freewheeling melodies and punchy drum loops on 'Giodisco.' Sam Divine gets for a deep and driving house sound on 'Take My Hand' (feat Josh Barry) and Oden & Fatzo X Camden Cox close things out with a more light and airy vocal sound on 'Lady Love.' Review: Aussie duo Jayse & Steve P are so low profile that we can't source quite enough information to introduce them, but when the edits are this good - we'll just let the music speak for itself. The pair are back with another collection of boogie-funk edits; on the A-side there's some sexy and neon-lit late-night vibes, and over the flip the retro styles carry over with a low slung electro-funk jam featuring a quite familiar and absolutely infectious hook.

Review: Over the years, France's Favorite Recordings has been very good at sniffing out lesser-known European gems from the disco and boogie era, mostly for superb and must-check compilations. Recently, they decided to make some of these licensed obscurities available on a series of 12" singles, where a louder, club-heavy cut is preferable to DJs. The latest sees them offer-up two lesser-known Belgian gems produced in the mid 1980s by future new beat don Tony Baron. Jonathan Jr's 'Hanging On To You' is warm, shuffling and synth heavy, with the artist's soulful and jazzy lead vocal sitting alongside squelchy synth-bass, Nile Rodgers style guitars and post-electro beats. Special Occasion's 'Flying To Santa Barbara', meanwhile, sits somewhere between 80s soul, AOR synth-pop and sax-sporting B-movie soundtrack goodness.

Review: Telomere Plastic asks you to Remember Your Days with a new six-track various artists EP full of delightfully designed club sounds. The melodies on Hiroyuki Kato are impossibly pure and delicate as they rain down the face of the shuffling drums of 'Black' while Six Dreams offers a complete vibe flip - the crisp and kinetic electro of 'Static Es.' Ty Senrna gets into a twitchy mutant tech house groove on 'Going Out Of Business' and Sherman C's 'Once U Pop' is an acid-laced breakbeat gem with a brilliantly tongue-in-cheek vocal sample that runs right through it, and Konerytmi shuts down with the silky drum breaks and sci-fi piste of 'Aikapiste'.

Review: Chad Dubz's Foundation Audio label outta Bristol remains a leading light in the bass, sound system and dubstep scene. This time out it is Kroomen and Somah who pair up for some mysterious late-night transmissions designed to rattle the walls. 'Kaba Rhythm' manages to be both light and airy yet dark and heavy all at once, with some Eastern melodies leading you ever deeper into the shadows. 'Sub 37' is all lurching kicks and skittish perc with twisted metallic textures and 'Heavy Smoke' is a slow and purposeful rhythm that takes its time to lure you in. It's golden-era dubstep that is as atmospheric as it is inviting.

This second heavyweight offering is a split EP with Linear System taking care of the A-side. 'Unknown Coordinates' kicks off with muscular rhythms and bit hits all made more eerie by some spooky pads and spoken words. 'Unlocated Call' then keeps it deep and heady with more taught synth phrases peeling off the beats. Soul Lazh then steps up for two cuts, firstly the edgy and tense synth sounds and pummelling beats of 'Breda' which is perfect for sunrise wig-outs, then the warped and linear techno menace of 'IJplein'.

Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Flip over for the "Summer In London Edit" - a more stripped back and direct version, perfect for outdoor stages as the sun beats down.

Review: The always-smiling Soichi Terada is a master of Japanese house music as well as being a fine video game soundtrack designer who brings unbridled synth and piano-laced joy to his sounds. His collab with Manabu Nagayama, 'Low Tension', is the subject of the A-side here with deep house don Jimpster remixing first with all the joyous synth energy of a new spring day and then with a Beatless Reprise that allows you to marvel at the magnificent keys. On the flip, Nick Holder's In The Six remix brings some smoky depths to Luyo's 'Shanee' while a KEENE Venao 7am remix of 'Celestial' is the exact tune you want to hear at sun up.

Review: In the sales notes sent to record stores, Smalleville has described this multi-artist affair as "a club night from start to finish". Certainly, the four tracks are pleasingly varied, moving from the 109 BPM bliss of Makybee Diva's untitled dream-house shuffler, to the energetic acid house/deep house fusion of "Monkeys On My Roof" by L'Amour Fou, a collaborative project whose members include the legendary David 'Move D' Moufang. Said blood diamond seam is the mythical yet plentiful vein known as deep house; here our local artisanal miners revitalise the precious contribs that especially once made splendid the faded gods of Italo house. From Italian DJ and producer Massimino Lippoli, a key figure in Italy's early house and progressive scene, to MCJ & Sima, Italian house duo, and Sima, who doubled up as vocalist and productive powerhouse, every track here is unerathed in mostly pre-polished, with the end jewellers over at Groovin needing very little work to do. David Syon's 'Swinground' closes things on a naive, part misshapen maccle, with what sound like hand-programmed brasses and pogo-synths played in above a twitchy but happy groove.

Review: Mellow Rose and Seargent Pepper's 'Imitation Love' proved a big-hitting reggae 45rpm when it first dropped and so now it has been reissued on this sweet, limited edition red vinyl 12". It first came on Studio 16 back in August of last year and is already worth a pretty penny on second hand markets. The A-side is a super sweet lover's rock sound with falsetto vocals up top, acoustic guitars and fleshy low ends sinking you into a romantic rhythm. On the flip, Seargent Pepper gets to work on 'Dub And Rub Ina Imitation Way' which is more sci-fi and futuristic in its sound designs, all with a hazy and stoner edge.

Review: British label Demon Singles Club reissue two proper classic disco bits by the American soul group Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes: the original 1979 version of 'Prayin'', a gospel-inspired dancefloor anthem that was produced by Harold Melvin and written by John Whitehead and Gene McFadden, and the contemporaneous Blue Album highlight 'Baby I'm Back'. 'Devoted' is a four-way collab between Micky More, Andy Tee, Reverendos Of Soul and Anduze that layers up the soulful drums and disco percussion with buttery smooth soul vocals. Serge Funk's 'Can't Get Enough' is all swirling strings and sunny trumpet motifs over funk house beats and then Micky More & Andy Tee appear to remix 'All I Want' into another future Body & Soul classic. The duo's own 'Philly Sensation" is a disco-tinged, string-heavy house dream to close.

Review: At the time of writing, Britain is basking in what feels like its 79th consecutive day of baking hot sunshine. What could be better, then, than another dose of tropical disco reworks from Sartorial and Moodena's fast-rising Tropical Disco imprint? Certainly, we can see a few open-air parties going wild to the impeccable piano solos and George Benson style jazz guitars of Moodeena's gently housed-up opener "Strawberry Jam", while Sartorial's "Feel It" is an urgent, guitar-laden rework of a familiar disco-funk favourite that should get things going on recognition factor alone. On the flip, Sartorial and Simon Kennedy successfully play around with a Pleasure-esque, jazz-funk-meets-disco number ("Got You The Floor"), before Sartorial gets the filters out for a tops-off dance through jazzy disco territory ("Electric Lane").
