Dot & Matthew Oh - "Horizon"
Nicolas Barnes - "Frames"
Modernism - "Metal Covered"
Ian Oskadev - "Clarity Of Thoughts"
Review: The Outlaw label's first compilation brings together four incredible artists, alongside label owner Mathew Oh, for a diverse and compelling techno journey. Side-1 opens with 'Horizon' by Dot & Matthew Oh, a track that blends catchy, upbeat rhythms with deep, melodic layers and spacey sound effects. The production is crisp and slick, making for an engaging start. Nicolas Barnes' 'Frames' follows with a floating, melodic dub techno experience. The track's driving beat is perfectly complemented by thought-provoking, atmospheric chords, creating a focused body and mind. On Side-2, Modernism's 'Metal Covered' offers a clever, intricate beat, striking a balance between deep and upbeat elements, making it both dynamic and hypnotic. Ian Oskadev closes the compilation with 'Clarity Of Thoughts', a track that pulses with energy, moving high-hats and a melodic core that builds a sense of momentum, delivering an uplifting finale to this excellent collection. VA Vol 1 is a showcase of quality production and innovation in techno, highlighting some of the genre's finest up-and-coming talents alongside established names.

Toro ((I Hate Models Speed Up Revival edit Of Andre VII remix) (6:09)
Review: 'Toro' is a modern classic post-punk track by Spanish band El Columpio Asesino, formed in 1999. Thoroughly difficult to classify or put into any neat box, their sound is characterised by synthesised elements and sinister rhythmic singing, with cryptic lyrics heard throughout. Here techno titan I Hate Models lends 'Toro' a surprise sped-up remix of a remix, remixing the ultra-dry retro-nostalgist version by Andre VII. Whereas Andre's is a drier take on the track - setting its dark-wavey lyrics against serious buzzing saws and scary sixteenth-note stabs in true synthpunk fashion - I Hate Models' version expounds on this further, fleshing out hardcore rollicks and luxury woops for a sublime, floor-frightening ultimatum in sound.

Review: Corsican label Isula Science drop a fresh brooder of previously unknown electro knowns, this time from label founder Flash FM alongside HDV, Sweely and Man/ipulate. Spanning vertiginous dark acid, then moving on through to dreamatic neon breakbeat and expedient Italo - 'Vol de nuit' especially makes signature use of a classic slap bass synth - they've got us entirely covered here. Enticing bumps in the night from the exquisitors.

Review: The influential 90s IDM and techno act Future Sound of London continues to delve into their early career with the reissue of The Pulse EP Vol 2, originally released in 1991. This EP exemplifies the early techno sound, blending rave elements with the more intelligent and linear side of electronic dance music. Side-1 kicks off with 'Stolen Documents' (Jazz dub) by The Future Sound of London, a track that perfectly melds jazzy undertones with dub influences, creating a sophisticated and immersive experience. Following this is Smart Systems' 'Zip Code' (Stress Ball mix), a piece that balances high-energy beats with a stress-relieving ambiance. Side-2 begins with 'Innate' (W O W mix) by The Future Sound of London, a track that delves into deeper, more atmospheric realms, showcasing the group's innovative approach to soundscaping. Indo Tribe's 'I've Become What You Were' (Insider mix) closes the EP, with a pulsating techno rhythm that encapsulates the essence of the early '90s rave scene. Before their signature chill out sound was made, FSOL his some of their highest notes here with these early EPs.

Review: Shout out to Greek powerhouse Kinesthetik Recordings for making it all the way to a half a century of releases there. They celebrate in the best way they know - with more tranced-out sounds from artists in their orbit. Giorgio & Andreas open things up with 'Nice One' and its thudding tech drums and cosmic synth lines. Diskinesia gets much more raw and moody with the edgy drums of 'Back & Forth' and Interphase then drops a pair of industrial tech thumpers. Giorgio & Andreas reappear with a raw, roughshod and deep groove and Marcelino Sanchez's 'Motive One' offers dub techno to close.

Review: Ignez's latest release, SMV 010, is a four-track exploration of techno that takes listeners on an extraordinary journey. This offering from Somov showcases Ignez's ability to craft compelling and distinctive sounds within the genre. Side-1 opens with 'Wounded Healer,' which features a strong beat and addictive elements that mesh perfectly with the groove. The track's tribal and darker undertones set a powerful tone. Next is 'Tavisupali,' a slightly demented and ominous builder that adds heavy movement and depth to the record. Flipping to Side-2, 'Ascend' delivers an epic groove, maintaining the momentum with its addictive rhythms. Finally, 'Lightworker' brings a haunting and eerie atmosphere, with melodic and unique strings that elevate the track to a new level. This is a very inventive approach and skillful execution. The seamless blend of dark, tribal, and melodic elements work great together.

Review: EC Underground is back with more inquisitors of low-end heavy sounds on Bass Scene Investigation vol 1 and again digs deep into the worlds of electro, techno, breakbeat and IDM. The compilation kicks off with the skittish percussive patterns of Illektrolab's 'Making Heads Dip', then heads into moody ground with ADJ, Pablo Funk brings some menacing synth work and Errorbeauty gets all weird and trippy with some mad electronics. Francois Dillinger offers a dystopian electro sound full of irresistibly jacked-up drums. A fine investigation indeed.

Review: Techno DJ & producer Umogen presents the debut release on her new label Wigs. Each of the four tracks are recognisable vibes to anyone familiar with DJing & radio shows. The release kicks off with 'A New Earth', some banging peak time electro and Imogen's first collaboration with legendary electro producer DJ Stingray. 'Synthesised Heart', a collaboration with Ben Pest, is another full blooded electro track with acid lines and robotic vocal samples appearing throughout the track. On the flip side, Jerome Hill presents some jacking acid techno 'Hoods Up'. Finally to close out, DJ Plant Texture's 'What Should I Do Next' is a dry techno tool with cheeky vocal samples that would fit into any techno set that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Review: Infinity Plus One has been working out of the London underground since the late '90. The veteran producer has always kept a low profile and let his music do the talking. Now he lands on Cyphon Recordings with a rare four-track EP of Detroit-infused, future-facing house and techno that is marbled with the characterful and compelling lyricism of JaronX. Context is Broken' leads with JaronX's poignant critique of global media, followed by heavy-duty house beats and striking vocals. 'Say The Truth' offers a glitchy, syncopated roller, 'Identity Keeps Changing' is a morphing techno track with '90s rave influences, while 'Utopia' rounds off the EP with transfixing techno that is wrapped up in deft synths, drones and wispy pads from the future.

Pop Out & Play - "Corrosive Tongue" (7:47)
Review: The Fourier Transform label outlay an arresting sonic journey on their debut release, bringing together breakbeat, ambient IDM, ambient techno, and prog house under a single banner. Opening with Inkipak's 'Betwixt', we're met with sonorous low-mid square waves and machine-gun-fire breaks, recalling the breathtaking, verging on apocalyptic expanse of a warehouse rave turned laser light show turned warzone. We break from this warring weir with 'Omnicron Acid' and 'City Of Tomorrow' by Gimmik and Brian Kage respectively, which lowers the intensity and sonic flow via spacious atmospheres and dudding percussive pops. Finally, the perfect fusion of the former two moods is achieved on 'Corrosive Tongue', the lead synth on which sounds like just that.

Junction Forest is a physical record store in Seoul, South Korea and also a recent home to releasing some great techno sounds. 'Dark Energy' by Inner Lakes is their newest record and comes with four strong late-night romps into classic but updated techno and trance sounds.'H2k' is a hypnotic builder that rides a nasty bassline to a triumphant ending while 'Sundown' is a mysterious traveller that takes you into another realm. On the flip side, the title track is an uptempo track that takes on a more spiritual trance path. Lastly, 'Voo2' is a wicked voyage into darker techno and trance happiness.

Review: Innershades is a perfect fit for the impossibly consistent Clone Jack For Daze series headed up by Dutch underground powerhouse Serge. The reason? They craft effective techno sounds that hark back to the glory days of yesterday but always with a healthy eye on the future. 'Homage' embodies that with snappy perc and drums and zippy, acid-laced snares that bring the soul. 'Tactics' is wired up with more magnificent synth sounds that keep things tense but emotive and '1992' is a tasteful throwback with more acid goodness. 'Memory Reset' keeps the jacked-up drums and wiry synth work flowing and 'Dance Opera (New mix)' shuts down with more acid, house and techno class.

Review: Flight Mode Records' fifth release offers a riveting exploration of futuristic techno landscapes with four distinct tracks from formidable artists. Innuendo's 'Reise Ins Zentrum Der Zeit' kicks off the first side with pulsating rhythms and a progressive build, evoking a journey through time with its driving energy. Following suit, Five Ten's 'Control' harks back to early 90s techno with a robust beat and bleepy melodies, giving listeners with its nostalgic charm. On Side-2, Mono-Tone presents 'Night Spirits,' an enthralling piece featuring a heavy acid line enveloped in ethereal echoes, accompanied by a subtle electro undertone that adds depth to the track's atmosphere. Closing the release, SPAC's 'My Galaxy Is Not Yours' injects upbeat energy with trance elements, inviting listeners on a cosmic voyage filled with pulsating rhythms and hypnotic melodies. Flight Mode Records' commitment to pushing the boundaries of techno is evident in this diverse selection of tracks, shows the label's dedication to delivering forward-thinking electronic music.

Review: In 1994, Vienna-based project iO, which was composed of Patrick Pulsinger, Erdem Tunakan, Umberto Gollini and Gerhard Potuznik, released a series of 12"s titled 'Attack', 'Decay', 'Sustain,' 'Release' on their iconic label Cheap Records. Known for their minimalist, Detroit-inspired techno, one standout track, 'Claire', broke the mould with its mid-tempo beat at around 110 bpm, jazzy chords, sample-based groove and sharp 909 drum sounds. It bridged techno, trip-hop and house and caught the attention of Mo'Wax Records in London, who re-released it to great acclaim. Embraced across genres, it quickly became a DJ favourite and remains a beloved classic to this day which is why it reappears here.

Review: By now a very well-recognised trailblazer of the minimal house and techno circuits, iO Mulen (Aleksandr Voznichenko) shares his third album, Rock Like This, through his own Mulen imprint. Refusing to fall back on heavy-handed press notes, the eight tracks on this perfect composite storm are enough to bewitch us of their own accord. These house and techno retrofusions play out like the kind of sounds that the impossible dangling contraption depicted on its front cover might generate; 'Rock Like This' throws back to Chicago deep house and jankout acid trance, magicking up a shockingly good fusion of disparate styles in a bionic mode, while the rising actions of 'How Do You Say' and 'Emergency' teem with twin enjoyments of and reverences for 90s Euro and acid techno. There are cosmic-trancier subplots on there too, such as 'I'm Waiting For', which selects its constituent sounds with an aesthete's ear, striking a difficult balance of the raw and the fine. Voznichenko refuses to privilege one referent genre over another, and it results in a respectfully done, carefully made and truly exciting dance record, unafraid of cheese nor sophistication, and reconciling the two.

Swiss-Tunisian producer Ish is behind this next one and offers three mind melting jams. The epic adventure that is 'The Mind Is A Labyrinth' opens with sci-fi samples and warped basslines, trippy arps and silky pads that leave long tails in their wake. Now with over ten years of experience under their belts, they welcome five new artists for a playful bricolage in deep and minimal techno, privileging elite, razor-sharp additive sound design and future-soulful vocal tasters. Opening with Scan 7's 'Detroit Built The First Techno Museum,' the track sets a sophisticated tone, rooted in the city's rich musical history. Inohs Sivad's 'Sxerendade' follows with a house anthem highlighted by sultry vocals, adding a layer of sensuality. AUX88's 'This Is What U Want' delivers crunchy electro beats that will resonate with fans of classic Detroit sounds. The compilation continues with Scan 7's 'I Am From Detroit' (Dre Brown remix), a fresh take that keeps the city's spirit alive. Man With No Name's 'Devil His Due' takes listeners on a Drexciyan electro journey, adding an intriguing edge. Review: Someone might've once perhaps daubed on a wall, 'structures don't march in the street', but techno is protest music, and we'd bet that if this new V/A from Molecular was ghetto-blasted with enough fervour for a just cause, we'd be bound to see some protestant response. That said, six new 'structures' from Molecular Recordings - the first part of their new Structures series - come bowling our way; a worthy sextet of pressure-risers, to say the ut-least. Whether the likes of 'The Curve', 'Light Flare', or 'Iccha' are taken as purely real, empirically acoustic disturbances - or as the abstract, vaguely synaesthetic thought-forms that our brains are sure to make of them - these are surely motivative enough causes for concern, danceable or otherwise. We'll admit that structures don't always march in the street, but where they don't, they surely do corral people onto dancefloors. The energy's gotta go somewhere!

Review: Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain, the masterminds behind Future Sound of London, return with The Pulse EP Vol 3, a reissue of their classic work under various aliases on the Jumpin' & Pumpin' label. This highly anticipated 12" features tracks that showcase their 90s techno brilliance. Side-1 opens with Smart Systems' 'Tingler' (Four By Four mix), a dark, sinister track that channels Beltram's 'hover' sound into a hardcore rave anthem. Indo Tribe's 'Owl' (I Can See You mix) follows, hailed by fans as one of the greatest breakbeat hardcore tracks ever made, a retro-classic loaded with chunky, energetic beats and an unforgettable sample. Side-2 kicks off with Indo Tribe's 'Bite The Bullet Baby' (Jacques Reynoix mix), another gem that blends early 90s rave energy with a unique edge. The real highlight, however, is Yage's 'Calcium' (Elementary mix), which first appeared on Future Sound of London's Accelerator album. Even today, it sounds transcendental and timeless, its melodic piano lines and otherworldly ambiance continuing to win over listeners. This EP is a vital piece of underground rave history and an essential listen for fans of early techno and breakbeat hardcore.

Review: Juan Atkins' Skynet under the Infiniti alias showcases a different side of his sound compared to his iconic work as Model 500 or Cybotron. This album leans towards a minimalist, soulful Detroit techno approach, with fewer layers and a relaxed, mid-paced flow that allows the rich synth sweeps and harmonic pads to shine. Tracks like 'Postcard From The Future' and 'Higher' are tracks that blend subtle melodies with atmospheric percussion and a groovy, uplifting energy. 'Thought Process' is stunning with its ticking, minimal beats, while 'Walking On Water' and 'Coffee Shop (Connection)' explore dub techno influences and soulful elements. While Skynet may not be as recognisable as some of Atkins' most celebrated works like Deep Space, it's still a very enjoyable album that in some ways is more well-rounded. The hypnotic repetition and sparse arrangements offer a fresh perspective on his sound, reminiscent of Detroit techno legends like Carl Craig and Kenny Larkin. For fans of pure Detroit techno with a lighter touch, Skynet delivers.

Full Disclosure shows Insolate's evolution as she embraces creative openness in her artistry. Tracks like 'On Your Knee' and 'Stand Strong' deliver powerful dub-infused rhythms and sharp vocals and, collaborating with guitarist PEP on 'The Proof' brings forth top techno with intense arpeggios. 'Full Disclosure' pulses with glitchy sequences while 'Big City' offers haunting melodies. A fine album from a venerated veteran.

Review: Stephen Hitchell's debut under his Intrusion moniker follows the dub techno blueprint of his previous project, Echospace's The Coldest Season. While that album drew on Basic Channel's icy soundscapes, The Seduction of Silence incorporates reggae influences particularly through the collaboration with Paul St. Hilaire (aka Tikiman), whose vocals add a unique twist. The album balances intense rhythms and serene moments with tracks like 'Montego Bay' and 'Seduction' demonstrating Hitchell's rhythmic creativity. With a warm, celestial atmosphere, the album's spiritual quality sets it apart from typical dub techno. Remastered here for even better sound, it is a classic that should be added to your dub cannon immediately.

Review: Ken Ishii's 1994 album, Reference to Difference, is a crucial, yet often overlooked, masterpiece in the world of techno, ambient and electronic music from Japan. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of Musicmine Records, this album is now reissued and remastered, available on vinyl with its original track-list for the first time. Born in 1970 in Sapporo, Ishii's journey into electronic music began with arcade games and pioneers like Yellow Magic Orchestra and Kraftwerk. The discovery of Detroit techno in the late 80s shaped his artistic vision, blending with influences from British and American IDM and ambient techno. Reference To Difference is a futuristic blend of ambient atmospheres, techno rhythms, and minimalist compositions. It transports listeners back to the mid-1990s, a golden era for Japan's unique techno culture. This era saw Tokyo's clubs like Maniac Love becoming essential hubs for the underground scene, where Ishii and peers like Susumu Yokota thrived. Ishii and Yokota set benchmarks for Japanese techno with their early works. Ishii's Reference to Difference and Yokota's Acid Mt. Fuji, released simultaneously on June 29, 1994, were pivotal in putting Japan on the global techno map. Martyn Pepperell's new liner notes accompany this reissue, shedding light on Ishii's influence and the album's significance. Rediscover this gem and experience a landmark moment in electronic music history.

Review: Ken Ishii is a Japanese techno pioneer with deep ties to anime including collaborations with Koji Morimoto and plenty of killer releases on labels like R&S Records. Ishii's Future in Light is a cornerstone of techno so this is welcome vinyl reissue by FREQ Records. The album blends techno and house and is famed for featuring a futuristic sound design, and now it has been remastered with a reinterpreted cover while retaining its original spirit. It still sounds futuristic like all proper techno should and the tunes will bring class to any set in which they are played.
